Small SUSY phases in string-inspired supergravity

In supersymmetric models, there are new CP violating phases which, if unsuppressed, would give a too large neutron electric dipole moment. We examine the possibility of small SUSY phases in string-inspired supergravity models in which supersymmetry is broken by the auxiliary components of the dilaton and moduli superfields. It is found that the SUSY phases can be suppressed by a small factor governing the breakdown of the approximate Peccei Quinn symmetries nonlinearly realized for the moduli superfields that participate in supersymmetry breaking. In many cases, the symmetry breaking factors are exponentially small for moderately large values of the moduli, leading to small phase values in a natural way.

Hadronic axion window and the big-bang nucleosynthesis

Hadronic axions with the decay constant $f_a\simeq 10^{6}$ GeV may fulfill all astrophysical and laboratory constraints discussed so far. In this paper, we reexamine the possibility of the hadronic axion window while taking into account the uncertainties of some parameters describing low energy axion dynamics. It is found that $f_a$ in the range from $3\times 10^5$ GeV to $3\times 10^6$ can not be excluded by existing arguments. We then examine the implication of this hadronic axion window for the big-bang nucleosynthesis (NS) by evaluating the energy density of thermal axions at the nucleosynthesis epoch. Our analysis yields $(ρ_a/ρ_ν)_{NS}=0.4\sim 0.5$ which exceeds slightly the current best bound $(ρ_a/ρ_ν)_{NS}\leq 0.3$.

Constraints from Nucleosynthesis and SN1987A on Majoron Emitting Double Beta Decay

We examine whether observable majoron emission in double beta decay can be compatible with the big-bang nucleosynthesis (NS) and the observed neutrino flux from SN1987A. It is found that the NS upper bound on $^4$He abundance implies that the majoron-neutrino Yukawa coupling constant $g\leq 9\times 10^{-6}$ and its maximal value is allowed only when the scalar quartic coupling constant $λ$ is extremely small, $λ\leq 100g^2$. It is also observed that, although quite less restrictive, SN1987A also provides independent constraints on coupling constants.

Light Quark Masses and Quarkonium Decays

After discussing the intrinsic ambiguity in determining the light quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d$, we reexamine the recent proposal that this ambiguity can be resolved by applying the QCD multipole expansion for the heavy quarkonium decays. It is observed that, due to instanton effects, some matrix elements which have been ignored in previous works can give a significant contribution to the decay amplitudes, which results in a large uncertainty in the value of $m_u/m_d$ deduced from quarkonium phenomenology. This uncertainty can be resolved only by a QCD calculation of some second order coefficients in the chiral expansion of the decay amplitudes.

Is CP a Gauge Symmetry?

We suggest here that CP is a discrete {\it gauge} symmetry, and is therefore not violated by quantum gravity. We show that four dimensional CP can arise as a discrete gauge symmetry in theories with dimensional compactification, if the original number of Minkowski dimensions equals $8k+1$, $8k+2$ or $8k+3$, and if there are certain restrictions on the gauge group; these conditions are met by superstrings. CP may then be broken spontaneously below $10^9$ GeV, explaining the observed CP violation in the kaon system without inducing a large EDMN. We discuss the phenomenology of such models, as well as the peculiar nature of cosmic ``CP strings'' which could be produced at the compactification scale. Such strings have the curious property that a particle carried around the string is turned into its CP conjugate. A single CP string renders four dimensional spacetime nonorientable.
