Computation approach for CMB bispectrum from primordial magnetic fields

We present a detailed calculation of our previous short paper [M. Shiraishi, D. Nitta, S. Yokoyama, K. Ichiki, and K. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. D 82, 121302 (2010).] in which we have investigated a constraint on the magnetic field strength through comic microwave background temperature bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. By taking into account full angular dependence of the bispectrum with spin spherical harmonics and Wigner symbols, we explicitly show that the cosmic microwave background bispectrum induced from the statistical-isotropic primordial vector fluctuations can be also described as an angle-averaged form in the rotationally invariant way. We also study the cases with different spectral indices of the power spectrum of the primordial magnetic fields.

Cosmic microwave background bispectrum of tensor passive modes induced from primordial magnetic fields

If the seed magnetic fields exist in the early Universe, tensor components of their anisotropic stresses are not compensated prior to neutrino decoupling and the tensor metric perturbations generated from them survive passively. Consequently, due to the decay of these metric perturbations after recombination, the so-called integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, the large-scale fluctuations of CMB radiation are significantly boosted. This kind of CMB anisotropy is called the "tensor passive mode." Because these fluctuations deviate largely from the Gaussian statistics due to the quadratic dependence on the strength of the Gaussian magnetic field, not only the power spectrum but also the higher-order correlations have reasonable signals. With these motives, we compute the CMB bispectrum induced by this mode. When the magnetic spectrum obeys a nearly scale-invariant shape, we obtain an estimation of a typical value of the normalized reduced bispectrum as $\ell_1(\ell_1 + 1)\ell_3(\ell_3+1)|b_{\ell_1\ell_2\ell_3}| \sim (130-6) \times 10^{-16} (B_{1 \rm Mpc} / 4.7 {\rm nG})^6$ depending on the energy scale of the magnetic field production from $10^{14}$GeV to $10^3$GeV. Here, $B_{1 {\rm Mpc}}$ is the strength of the primordial magnetic field smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$. From the above estimation and the current observational constraint on the primordial non-Gaussianity, we get a rough constraint on the magnetic field strength as $B_{1 {\rm Mpc}} < 2.6 - 4.4 {\rm nG}$.

CMB Bispectrum from Primordial Scalar, Vector and Tensor non-Gaussianities

We present an all-sky formalism for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum induced by the primordial non-Gaussianities not only in scalar but also in vector and tensor fluctuations. We find that the bispectrum can be formed in an explicitly rationally invariant way by taking into account the angular and polarization dependences of the vector and tensor modes. To demonstrate this and present how to use our formalism, we consider a specific example of the correlation between two scalars and a graviton as the source of non-Gaussianity. As a result, we show that the CMB reduced bispectrum of the intensity anisotropies is evaluated as a function of the multipole and the coupling constant between two scalars and a graviton denoted by $g_{tss}$; $|b_{\ell \ell \ell}| \sim \ell^{-4} \times 8 \times 10^{-18} |g_{tss}|$. By estimating the signal-to-noise ratio, we find that the constraint as $|g_{tss}| < 6$ will be expected from the PLANCK experiment.

Cosmic microwave background bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields

We calculate the cosmic microwave background bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. We take into account the full angular dependence of the bispectrum and discuss the amplitude and also the shape of the bispectrum in $\ell$ space. In the squeezed limit as $\ell_1 = \ell_2 \gg \ell_3$, we estimate a typical values of the normalized reduced bispectrum as $\ell_1(\ell_1 + 1)\ell_3(\ell_3+1)|b_{\ell_1\ell_2\ell_3}| \sim 2 \times 10^{-19}$, for the strength of the primordial magnetic field smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$ scale $B_{1 \rm Mpc} = 4.7 \rm nG$ assuming a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of magnetic fields. We find that a constraint on the magnetic field strength will be roughly estimated as $B_{1 \rm Mpc} < 10 {\rm nG}$ if PLANCK places a limit on the nonlinearity parameter of local-type configuration as $|f^{\rm local}_{\rm NL}| < 5$.

Copula Cosmology: Constructing a Likelihood Function

To estimate cosmological parameters from a given dataset, we need to construct a likelihood function, which sometimes has a complicated functional form. We introduce the copula, a mathematical tool to construct an arbitrary multivariate distribution function from one-dimensional marginal distribution functions with any given dependence structure. It is shown that a likelihood function constructed by the so-called Gaussian copula can reproduce very well the n-dimensional probability distribution of the cosmic shear power spectrum obtained from a large number of ray-tracing simulations. This suggests that the Copula likelihood will be a powerful tool for future weak lensing analyses, instead of the conventional multivariate Gaussian likelihood.

Precise Estimation of Cosmological Parameters Using a More Accurate Likelihood Function

The estimation of cosmological parameters from a given data set requires a construction of a likelihood function which, in general, has a complicated functional form. We adopt a Gaussian copula and constructed a copula likelihood function for the convergence power spectrum from a weak lensing survey. We show that the parameter estimation based on the Gaussian likelihood erroneously introduces a systematic shift in the confidence region, in particular for a parameter of the dark energy equation of state w. Thus, the copula likelihood should be used in future cosmological observations.

Constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity from Galaxy-CMB lensing cross-correlation

Recent studies have shown that the primordial non-Gaussianity affects clustering of dark matter halos through a scale-dependent bias and various constraints on the non-Gaussianity through this scale-dependent bias have been placed. Here we introduce the cross-correlation between the CMB lensing potential and the galaxy angular distribution to effectively extract information about the bias from the galaxy distribution. Then, we estimate the error of non-linear parameter, f_NL, for the on-going CMB experiments and galaxy surveys, such as Planck and Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). We found that for the constraint on f_NL with Planck and HSC, the wide field galaxy survey is preferable to the deep one, and the expected error on f_NL can be as small as: Δf_NL ~ 20 for b_0 = 2 and Δf_NL ~ 10 for b_0 = 4, where b_0 is the linear bias parameter. It is also found that future wide field galaxy survey could achieve Δf_NL ~ 5 with CMB prior from Planck if one could observe highly biased objects at higher redshift (z ~ 2).

Analytic formulae of the CMB bispectra generated from non-Gaussianity in the tensor and vector perturbations

We present a complete set of formulae for calculating the bispectra of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies generated from non-Gaussianity in the vector and tensor mode perturbations. In the all-sky analysis it is found that the bispectrum formulae for the tensor and vector-mode non-Gaussianity formally take complicated forms compared to the scalar mode one because the photon transfer functions in the tensor and vector modes depend on the azimuthal angle between the direction of the wave number vector of the photon's perturbation and that of the line of sight. We demonstrate that flat-sky approximations remove this difficulty because this kind of azimuthal angle dependence apparently vanishes in the flat-sky limit. Through the flat-sky analysis, we also find that the vector or tensor bispectrum of $B$-mode polarization vanishes in the squeezed limit, unless the cosmological parity is violated at the nonlinear level.

Probing Early Cosmic Magnetic Fields through Pair Echos from High-Redshift GRBs

We discuss the expected properties of pair echo emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) at high redshifts ($z \gtrsim 5$), their detectability, and the consequent implications for probing intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMFs) at early epochs. Pair echos comprise inverse Compton emission by secondary electron-positron pairs produced via interactions between primary gamma-rays from the GRB and low-energy photons of the diffuse intergalactic radiation, arriving with a time delay that depends on the nature of the intervening IGMFs. At sufficiently high $z$, the IGMFs are unlikely to have been significantly contaminated by astrophysical outflows, and the relevant intergalactic radiation may be dominated by the well-understood cosmic microwave background (CMB). Pair echoes from luminous GRBs at $z \sim 5-10$ may be detectable by future facilities such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array or the Advanced Gamma-ray Imaging System, as long as the GRB primary emission extends to multi-TeV energies, the comoving IGMFs at these redshifts are $B \sim 10^{-16}-10^{-15}~{\rm Gauss}$, and the non-CMB component of the diffuse intergalactic radiation is relatively low. Observations of pair echos from high-$z$ GRBs can provide a unique, in-situ probe of weak IGMFs during the epochs of early structure formation and cosmic reionization.

Constraints on the neutrino mass and the primordial magnetic field from the matter density fluctuation parameter $σ_8$

We have made an analysis of limits on the neutrino mass based upon the formation of large-scale structure in the presence of a primordial magnetic field. We find that a new upper bound on the neutrino mass is possible based upon fits to the cosmic microwave background and matter power spectrum when the existing independent constraints on the matter density fluctuation parameter $σ_8$ and the primordial magnetic field are taken into account.

Ghost Dark Matter

We revisit ghost dark matter, the possibility that ghost condensation may serve as an alternative to dark matter. In particular, we investigate the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) background evolution and the large-scale structure (LSS) in the $Λ$GDM universe, i.e. a late-time universe dominated by a cosmological constant and ghost dark matter. The FRW background of the $Λ$GDM universe is indistinguishable from that of the standard $Λ$CDM universe if $M\gtrsim 1 {\rm eV}$, where $M$ is the scale of spontaneous Lorentz breaking. From the LSS we find a stronger bound: $M\gtrsim 10 {\rm eV}$. For smaller $M$, ghost dark matter would have non-negligible sound speed after the matter-radiation equality, and thus the matter power spectrum would significantly differ from observation. These bounds are compatible with the phenomenological upper bound $M\lesssim 100 {\rm GeV}$ known in the literature.

New Constraints on the Primordial Magnetic Field

We present the newest statistical and numerical analysis of the matter and cosmic microwave background power spectrum with effects of the primordial magnetic field (PMF) included. New limits to the PMF strength and power spectral index are obtained based upon the accumulated data for both the matter and CMB power spectra on small angular scales. We find that a maximum develops in the probability distribution for a magnitude of the PMF of $|B_λ| = 0.85 \pm 1.25(\pm 1σ)$ nG on a comoving scale of at 1 Mpc, corresponding to upper limits of $\mathbf{< 2.10 nG} (68% \mathrm{CL})$ and $\mathbf{< 2.98 nG} (95% \mathrm{CL})$. While for the power spectral index we find $n_\mathrm{B}= -2.37^{+0.88}_{-0.73}(\pm 1σ)$, corresponding to upper limits of $ \mathbf{< -1.19} (68% \mathrm{CL})$ and $ \mathbf{< -0.25} (95% \mathrm{CL})$. This result provides new constraints on models for magnetic field generation and the physics of the early universe. We conclude that future observational programs for the CMB and matter power spectrum will likely provide not only upper limits but also lower limits to the PMF parameters.

Cosmic Discordance: Detection of a modulation in the primordial fluctuation spectrum

As a test of the standard inflationary cosmology, which generically predicts nearly scale-invariant spectrum of primordial curvature fluctuations, we perform Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo analysis to search for possible modulations in the power spectrum and determine its shape together with the cosmological parameters using cosmic microwave background radiation data. By incorporating various three-parameter features on the simple power-law spectrum, we find an oscillatory modulation localized around the comoving wavenumber $k\simeq 0.009\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ at 99.995% confidence level which improves the log-likelihood as much as $-Δ2\ln {\cal L}\equiv Δχ^2_{\rm eff}=-22$. This feature can be detected even if we use only the cross correlation between the temperature and the E-mode polarization anisotropies.

Constraints on neutrino masses from WMAP5 and BBN in the lepton asymmetric universe

In this paper, we put constraints on neutrino properties such as mass $m_ν$ and degeneracy parameters $ξ_i$ from WMAP5 data and light element abundances by using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach. In order to take consistently into account the effects of the degeneracy parameters, we run the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis code for each value of $ξ_i$ and the other cosmological parameters to estimate the Helium abundance, which is then used to calculate CMB anisotropy spectra instead of treating it as a free parameter. We find that the constraint on $m_ν$ is fairly robust and does not vary very much even if the lepton asymmetry is allowed, and is given by $\sum m_ν< 1.3 \rm eV$ ($95 % \rm C.L.$).

Evolution of Cosmological Perturbations in the Presence of Primordial Magnetic Fields

Possible existence of the primordial magnetic fields has affected the structure formation of the universe. In this paper it is shown that the initial conditions for density perturbations with magnetic fields derived in previous works are inconsistent with Einstein equations. We find that this inconsistency arises due to the unwanted cancellation of contributions from the magnetic fields and primordial radiations. A complete set of equations and consistent initial conditions in the long wavelength limit are given with an explicit derivation in the covariant approach with CDM frame, by newly taking into account a non-relativistic matter contribution in the radiation dominated era. By solving these equations numerically, we derive the angular spectrum of cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the matter power spectrum with magnetic fields. We find that the amplitude of the angular power spectrum of CMB anisotropies can alter at most a order of magnitude at $l \lesssim 4000$ compared with the previous results in the literature.

Constraints on Neutrino Masses from Weak Lensing

The weak lensing (WL) distortions of distant galaxy images are sensitive to neutrino masses by probing the suppression effect on clustering strengths of total matter in large-scale structure. We use the latest measurement of WL correlations, the CFHTLS data, to explore constraints on neutrino masses. We find that, while the WL data alone cannot place a stringent limit on neutrino masses due to parameter degeneracies, the constraint can be significantly improved when combined with other cosmological probes, the WMAP 5-year (WMAP5) data and the distance measurements of type-Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). The upper bounds on the sum of neutrino masses are m_tot = 1.1, 0.76 and 0.54 eV (95% CL) for WL+WMAP5, WMAP5+SNe+BAO, and WL+WMAP5+SNe+BAO, respectively, assuming a flat LCDM model with finite-mass neutrinos. In deriving these constraints, our analysis includes the non-Gaussian covariances of the WL correlation functions to properly take into account significant correlations between different angles.

Constraints on the Primordial Magnetic Field from $σ_8$

A primordial magnetic field (PMF) can affect the evolution of density field fluctuations in the early universe. In this paper we constrain the PMF amplitude $B_λ$ and power spectral index $n_\mathrm{B}$ by comparing calculated density field fluctuations with observational data, i.e. the number density fluctuation of galaxies. We show that the observational constraints on cosmological density fluctuations, as parameterized by $σ_8$, lead to strong constraints on the amplitude and spectral index of the PMF.

Detectability of Pair Echos from Gamma-Ray Bursts and Intergalactic Magnetic Fields

High-energy emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can give rise to pair echos, i.e. delayed inverse Compton emission from secondary $e^{\pm}$ pairs produced in $γ-γ$ interactions with intergalactic background radiation. We investigate the detectability of such emission with modern-day gamma-ray telescopes. The spectra and light curves are calculated for a wide range of parameters, applying the formalism recently developed by Ichiki et al. The flux depends strongly on the unknown magnitude and coherence length of intergalactic magnetic fields, and we delineate the range of field strength and redshift that allow detectable echos. Relevant uncertainties such as the high-energy cutoff of the primary gamma-ray spectrum and the intensity of the cosmic infrared background are addressed. GLAST and MAGIC may be able to detect pair echo emission from GRBs with redshift $\lesssim 1$ if the primary spectra extend to $\sim 10 ~ {\rm TeV}$.
