Neutrino Masses from Cosmological Probes in Interacting Neutrino Dark-Energy Models

We investigate whether interaction between massive neutrinos and quintessence scalar field is the origin of the late time accelerated expansion of the universe. We present explicit formulas of the cosmological linear perturbation theory in the neutrinos probes of dark-energy model, and calculate cosmic microwave background anisotropies and matter power spectra. In these models, the evolution of the mass of neutrinos is determined by the quintessence scalar field, which is responsible for a varying effective equation of states: $ω_{eff}(z)$ goes down -1. We consider several types of scalar field potential and put constraints on the coupling parameter between neutrinos and dark energy. By combining data from cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments including the WMAP 3-year results, large scale structure with 2dFGRS data sets, we constrain the hypothesis of massive neutrinos in the mass-varying neutrino scenario. Assuming the flatness of the universe, the constraint we can derive from the current observation is $\sum m_ν < 0.45$ eV at 1$σ$ (0.87 eV at 2$σ$) confidence level for the sum over three species of neutrinos. The dynamics of scalar field and the impact of scalar field perturbations on cosmic microwave background anisotropies are discussed. We also discuss on the instability issue of the our model and confirm that neutrinos are stable against the density fluctuation.

Neutrino mass effects on vector and tensor CMB anisotropies in the presence of a primordial magnetic field

If a primordial magnetic field (PMF) is present during photon decoupling and afterward, a finite neutrino mass can affect all modes of the CMB. In this work, we expand on earlier studies of the scalar mode effects by constructing the vector and tensor mode equations in the presence of massive neutrinos and a PMF. We compute the power spectrum of the various modes in an illustrative example and find that the neutrino mass can significantly affect the vector and tensor modes when a PMF exists, while the effects are negligible for no PMF. The most prominent result of the present analysis is the behavior of the EE component of the tensor mode at low multipoles. For massive neutrinos the EE mode can become comparable to the observed primary anisotropy. Therefore, if and when the EE mode power spectrum is measured at low multipoles the possibility exists to place a strong constraint on the sum of the neutrino masses.

Cosmic microwave background constraints on a decaying cosmological term related to the thermal evolution

We constrain the thermal evolution of the universe with a decaying cosmological term by using the method of the analysis for the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observation data. The cosmological term is assumed to be a function of the scale factor that increases toward the early universe, and the radiation energy density is lower compared to that in the model with the standard cosmological "constant" (LCDM). The decrease in the radiation density affects the thermal history of the universe; e.g. the photon decoupling occurs at higher-z compared to the case of the standard LCDM model. As a consequence, a decaying cosmological term affects the cosmic microwave background anisotropy. Thanks to the Markov-chain Monte Carlo method, we compare the angular power spectrum in the decaying LCDM model with the CMB data, and we get severe constraints on parameters of the model.

Electromagnetic Properties of the Early Universe

Detailed physical processes of magnetic field generation from density fluctuations in the pre-recombination era are studied. Solving Maxwell equations and the generalized Ohm's law, the evolutions of the net charge density, the electric current and the electromagnetic field are solved. Unlike most of previous works, we treat electrons and photons as separate components under the assumption of tight coupling. We find that generation of the magnetic field due to density fluctuations takes place only from the second order of both perturbation theory and the tight coupling approximation.

Probing the Nature of the Weakest Intergalactic Magnetic Fields with the High Energy Emission of Gamma-Ray Bursts

We investigate the delayed, secondary GeV-TeV emission of gamma-ray bursts and its potential to probe the nature of intergalactic magnetic fields. Geometrical effects are properly taken into account for the time delay between primary high energy photons and secondary inverse Compton photons from electron-positron pairs, which are produced in $γ$-$γ$ interactions with background radiation fields and deflected by intervening magnetic fields. The time-dependent spectra of the delayed emission are evaluated for a wide range of magnetic field strengths and redshifts. The typical flux and delay time of secondary photons from bursts at $z \sim 1$ are respectively $\sim 10^{-8}$ GeV cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 10^4$ s if the field strengths are $\sim 10^{-18}$ G, as might be the case in intergalactic void regions. We find crucial differences between the cases of coherent and tangled magnetic fields, as well as dependences on the field coherence length.

Cosmological Signatures of the Interaction between Dark-Energy and Massive Neutrinos

Neutrino Mass Bounds from Neutrinoless Double Beta Decays and Large Scale Structures

We investigate the way how the total mass sum of neutrinos can be constrained from the neutrinoless double beta decay and cosmological probes with cosmic microwave background (WMAP 3-year results), large scale structures including 2dFGRS and SDSS data sets. First we discuss, in brief, on the current status of neutrino mass bounds from neutrino beta decays and cosmic constrain within the flat $ΛCMD$ model. In addition, we explore the interacting neutrino dark-energy model, where the evolution of neutrino masses is determined by quintessence scalar filed, which is responsable for cosmic acceleration today. Assuming the flatness of the universe, the constraint we can derive from the current observation is $\sum m_ν < 0.87$eV at the 95 % confidence level, which is consistent with $\sum m_ν < 0.68$eV in the flat $ΛCDM$ model. Finally we discuss the future prospect of the neutrino mass bound with weak-lensing effects.

Cosmic Shear from Scalar-Induced Gravitational Waves

Weak gravitational lensing by foreground density perturbations generates a gradient mode in the shear of background images. In contrast, cosmological tensor perturbations induce a non-zero curl mode associated with image rotations. In this note, we study the lensing signatures of both primordial gravitational waves from inflation and second-order gravitational waves generated from the observed spectrum of primordial density fluctuations. We derive the curl mode for galaxy lensing surveys at redshifts of 1 to 3 and for lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at a redshift of 1100. We find that the curl mode angular power spectrum associated with secondary tensor modes for galaxy lensing surveys dominates over the corresponding signal generated by primary gravitational waves from inflation. However, both tensor contributions to the shear curl mode spectrum are below the projected noise levels of upcoming galaxy and CMB lensing surveys and therefore are unlikely to be detectable.

Effects of a Primordial Magnetic Field on Low and High Multipoles of the CMB

The existence of a primordial magnetic field (PMF) would affect both the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It also provides a plausible explanation for the possible disparity between observations and theoretical fits to the CMB power spectrum. Here we report on calculations of not only the numerical CMB power spectrum from the PMF, but also the correlations between the CMB power spectrum from the PMF and the primary curvature perturbations. We then deduce a precise estimate of the PMF effect on all modes of perturbations. We find that the PMF affects not only the CMB TT and TE modes on small angular scales, but also on large angular scales. The introduction of a PMF leads to a better fit to the CMB power spectrum for the higher multipoles, and the fit at lowest multipoles can be used to constrain the correlation of the PMF with the density fluctuations for large negative values of the spectral index. Our prediction for the BB mode for a PMF average field strength $|B_λ| =4.0$ nG is consistent with the upper limit on the BB mode deduced from the latest CMB observations. We find that the BB mode is dominated by the vector mode of the PMF for higher multipoles. We also show that by fitting the complete power spectrum one can break the degeneracy between the PMF amplitude and its power spectral index.

Probing polarization states of primordial gravitational waves with CMB anisotropies

We discuss the polarization signature of primordial gravitational waves imprinted in cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The high-energy physics motivated by superstring theory or M-theory generically yield parity violating terms, which may produce a circularly polarized gravitational wave background (GWB) during inflation. In contrast to the standard prediction of inflation with un-polarized GWB, circularly polarized GWB generates non-vanishing TB and EB-mode power spectra of CMB anisotropies. We evaluate the TB and EB-mode power spectra taking into account the secondary effects and investigate the dependence of cosmological parameters. We then discuss current constraints on the circularly polarized GWB from large angular scales (l < 16) of the three year WMAP data. Prospects for future CMB experiments are also investigated based on a Monte Carlo analysis of parameter estimation, showing that the circular polarization degree, varepsilon, which is the asymmetry of the tensor power spectra between right- and left-handed modes normalized by the total amplitude, can be measured down to |varepsilon| 0.35(r/0.05)^{-0.6}.

Constraints on Generalized Dark Energy from Recent Observations

Effects of a generalized dark energy fluid is investigated on cosmic density fluctuations such as cosmic microwave background. As a general dark energy fluid, we take into consideration the possibility of the anisotropic stress for dark energy, which has not been discussed much in the literature. We comprehensively study its effects on the evolution of density fluctuations along with that of non-adiabatic pressure fluctuation of dark energy, then give constraints on such a generalized dark energy from current observations. We show that, though we cannot find any stringent limits on the anisotropic stress or the non-adiabatic pressure fluctuation themselves, the constrains on the equation of state of dark energy can be affected in some cases by the nature of dark energy fluctuation characterized by these properties. This may have important implications to the strategy to study the nature of dark energy.

Gravitational Wave Spectrum Induced by Primordial Scalar Perturbations

We derive the complete spectrum of gravitational waves induced by primordial scalar perturbations ranging over all observable wavelengths. This scalar-induced contribution can be computed directly from the observed scalar perturbations and general relativity and is, in this sense, independent of the cosmological model for generating the perturbations. The spectrum is scale-invariant on small scales, but has an interesting scale-dependence on large and intermediate scales, where scalar-induced gravitational waves do not redshift and are hence enhanced relative to the background density of the Universe. This contribution to the tensor spectrum is significantly different in form from the direct model-dependent primordial tensor spectrum and, although small in magnitude, it dominates the primordial signal for some cosmological models. We confirm our analytical results by direct numerical integration of the equations of motion.

Observational constraints on a decaying cosmological term

We investigate the evolution of a universe with a decaying cosmological term (vacuum energy) that is assumed to be a function of the scale factor. In this model, while the cosmological term increases to the early universe, the radiation energy density is lower than the model with the cosmological "constant". We find that the effects of the decaying cosmological term on the expansion rate at the redshift z<2 is negligible. However, the decrease in the radiation density affects on the thermal history of the universe; e.g. the photon decoupling occurs at higher $z$ compared to the case of the standard ΛCDM model. As a consequence, a decaying cosmological term affects on the cosmic microwave background anisotropy. We show the angular power spectrum in DΛCDM model and compare with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data.

Magnetic Field Spectrum at Cosmological Recombination

A generation of magnetic fields from cosmological density perturbations is investigated. In the primordial plasma before cosmological recombination, all of the materials except dark matter in the universe exist in the form of photons, electrons, and protons (and a small number of light elements). Due to the different scattering nature of photons off electrons and protons, electric currents and electric fields are inevitably induced, and thus magnetic fields are generated. We present a detailed formalism of the generation of cosmological magnetic fields based on the framework of the well-established cosmological perturbation theory following our previous works. We numerically obtain the power spectrum of magnetic fields for a wide range of scales, from $k\sim 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ up to $k\sim 2\times 10^{4}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and provide its analytic interpretation. Implications of these cosmologically generated magnetic fields are discussed.

Effect of Primordial Magnetic Field on Seeds for Large Scale Structure

Magnetic field plays a very important role in many astronomical phenomena at various scales of the universe. It is no exception in the early universe. Since the energy density, pressure, and tension of the primordial magnetic field affect gravitational collapses of plasma, the formation of seeds for large scale structures should be influenced by them. Here we numerically investigate the effects of stochastic primordial magnetic field on the seeds of large scale structures in the universe in detail. We found that the amplitude ratio between the density spectra with and without PMF ($|P(k)/P_0(k)|$ at $k>0.2$ Mpc$^{-1}$) lies between 75% and 130% at present for the range of PMF strengths 0.5 nG $< B_λ< 1.0$ nG, depending on the spectral index of PMF and the correlation between the matter density and the PMF distributions.

Lepton asymmetry in the primordial gravitational wave spectrum

Effects of neutrino free streaming is evaluated on the primordial spectrum of gravitational radiation taking both neutrino chemical potential and masses into account. The former or the lepton asymmetry induces two competitive effects, namely, to increase anisotropic pressure, which damps the gravitational wave more, and to delay the matter-radiation equality time, which reduces the damping. The latter effect is more prominent and a large lepton asymmetry would reduce the damping. We may thereby be able to measure the magnitude of lepton asymmetry from the primordial gravitational wave spectrum.

Primordial magnetic field constrained from CMB anisotropies, and its generation and evolution before, during and after the BBN

The primordial magnetic field (PMF) can strongly affect the cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum and the formation of large scale structure. In this presentation, we calculate the CMB temperature anisotropies generated by including a power-law magnetic field at the photon last scattering surface (PLSS). We then deduce an upper limit on the primordial magnetic field based upon our theoretical analysis of the power excess on small angular scales. We have taken into account several important effects such as the modified matter sound speed in the presence of a magnetic field. An upper limit to the field strength of $|B_λ|\lesssim$ 4.7 nG at the present scale of 1 Mpc is deduced. This is obtained by comparing the calculated theoretical result including the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect with recent observed data on the small scale CMB anisotropies from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) and the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver (ACBAR). We discuss several possible mechanisms for the generation and evolution of the PMF before, during and after the BBN.
