The Prym map on divisors, and the slope of A_5

In this paper we compute the pullback of divisor classes under the Prym map (extended to the boundary), and apply this result to get a lower bound on the slope of effective divisors on the perfect cone compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian fivefolds. In the appendix by Klaus Hulek, the notion of slope for arbitrary toroidal compactifications is discussed, and the slope bound is shown to hold in general.

Principally polarized semi-abelic varieties of small torus rank, and the Andreotti-Mayer loci

We obtain, by a direct computation, explicit descriptions of all principally polarized semi-abelic varieties of torus rank up to 3. We describe the geometry of their symmetric theta divisors and obtain explicit formulas for the involution and its fixed points. These results allow us to give a new proof of the statements about the dimensions, for small genus, of the loci of ppav with theta divisor containing two-torsion points of multiplicity three. We also prove a result about the closure of this set. Our computations used in our work arXiv:1103.1857 to compute the class of the closure of the locus of intermediate jacobians of cubic threefolds in the Chow ring of the perfect cone compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian fivefolds.

Arithmetic of singular Enriques Surfaces

We study the arithmetic of Enriques surfaces whose universal covers are singular K3 surfaces. If a singular K3 surface X has discriminant d, then it has a model over the ring class field d. Our main theorem is that the same holds true for any Enriques quotient of X. It is based on a study on Neron-Severi groups of singular K3 surfaces. We also comment on Galois actions on divisors of Enriques surfaces.

Calculating the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic threefolds and the cohomology of singular hypersurfaces

In this paper we give a method for calculating the rank of a general elliptic curve over the field of rational functions in two variables. We reduce this problem to calculating the cohomology of a singular hypersurface in a weighted projective 4-space. We then give a method for calculating the cohomology of a certain class of singular hypersurfaces, extending work of Dimca for the isolated singularity case.

Enriques Surfaces and jacobian elliptic K3 surfaces

This paper proposes a new geometric construction of Enriques surfaces. Its starting point are K3 surfaces with jacobian elliptic fibration which arise from rational elliptic surfaces by a quadratic base change. The Enriques surfaces obtained in this way are characterised by elliptic fibrations with a rational curve as bisection which splits into two sections on the covering K3 surface. The construction has applications to the study of Enriques surfaces with specific automorphisms. It also allows us to answer a question of Beauville about Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups show an exceptional behaviour. In a forthcoming paper, we will study arithmetic consequences of our construction.

Cohomology of the toroidal compactification of A_3

We prove that the cohomology groups with rational coefficients of the Voronoi compactification of the moduli space of abelian threefolds coincide with the Chow groups of that space, as determined by Van der Geer.

Some intersection numbers of divisors on toroidal compactifications of A_g

We study the top intersection numbers of the boundary and Hodge class divisors on toroidal compactifications of the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties and compute those numbers that live away from the stratum which lies over the closure of $A_{g-3}$ in the Satake compactification.

The Hirzebruch-Mumford volume for the orthogonal group and applications

In this paper we derive an explicit formula for the Hirzebruch-Mumford volume of an indefinite lattice L of rank at least 3. If Γis an arithmetic subgroup of the group O(L) of isometries of L and L has signature (2,n), then an application of Hirzebruch-Mumford proportionality allows us to determine the leading term of the growth of the dimension of the spaces S_k(Γ) of cusp forms of weight k, as k goes to infinity. We compute this in a number of examples, which are important for geometric applications.

The L-series of a cubic fourfold

We study the L-series of cubic fourfolds. Our main result is that, if X/C is a special cubic fourfold associated to some polarized K3 surface $S$, defined over a number field K such that S^[2](K) is not empty, then X has a model over K such that the L-series of the primitive cohomology of X/K can be expressed in the L-series of S/K. This allows us to compute the L-series for a discrete dense subset of cubic fourfolds in the moduli spaces of certain special cubic fourfolds. We also discuss a concrete example.

Modularity of Calabi-Yau varieties

In this paper we discuss recent progress on the modularity of Calabi-Yau varieties. We focus mostly on the case of surfaces and threefolds. We will also discuss some progress on the structure of the L-function in connection with mirror symmetry. Finally, we address some questions and open problems.

On the motive of Kummer varieties associated to $Γ_1(7)$ - Supplement to the paper: The modularity of certain non-rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds (by R. Livné and N. Yui)

In their paper Livné and Yui (math.AG/0304497) discuss several examples of non-rigid Calabi-Yau varieties which admit semi-stable K3-fibrations with 6 singular fibres over a base which is a rational modular curve. They also establish the modularity of the L-function of these examples. The purpose of this note is to point out that the examples which were listed in their paper, but which do not lead to semi-stable fibrations, are still modular in the sense that their L-function is associated to modular forms. We treat the case associated to the group Gamma_1(7) in detail, but our technique also applies to many other cases. We further make some comments concerning the Kummer construction for fibre products of elliptic surfaces in general.

On the modularity of Calabi-Yau threefolds containing elliptic ruled surfaces

We prove that (not necessarily rigid) Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over the rationals which contain sufficiently many elliptic ruled surfcaes are modular (under mild restrictions on the primes of bad reduction). Our proof uses the results of Dieulefait and Manoharmayum who proved modularity of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Small schemes and varieties of minimal degree

We prove that if X is any 2-regular projective scheme (in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford) then X is "small". This means that if L is a linear space and Y:= L\cap X is finite, then Y is "linearly independent" in the sense that the dimension of the linear span of Y is 1+deg Y. The converse is true and well-known for finite schemes, but false in general. The main result of this paper is that the converse, "small implies 2-regular", is also true for reduced projective schemes (algebraic sets). This is proven by means of a delicate geometric analysis, leading to a complete classification: we show that the components of a small algebraic set are varieties of minimal degree, meeting in a particularly simple way. From the classification one can show that if X is 2-regular, then so is X_{red}, and so also is the projection of X from any point of X. Our results extend the Del Pezzo-Bertini classification of varieties of minimal degree, the characterization of these as the varieties of regularity 2 by Eisenbud-Goto, and the construction of 2-regular square-free monomial ideals by Fröberg.

Restricting linear syzygies: algebra and geometry

In this paper we derive geometric consequences from the presence of a long strand of linear syzygies in the minimal free resolution of a closed scheme in projective space whose homogeneous ideal is generated by quadrics. These consequences are given in terms of intersections with arbitrary linear subspaces. We use our results to bound homological invariants of some well-known projective varieties, to give a combinatorial characterization of quadratic monomial ideals with a long strand of linear syzygies, etc
