A note on the Intersection of Veronese Surfaces

Motivated by our study (elsewhere) of linear syzygies of homogeneous ideals generated by quadrics and their restrictions to subvarieties of the ambient projective space, we investigate in this note possible zero-dimensional intersections of two Veronese surfaces in P^5. The case of two Veronese surfaces in P^5 meeting in 10 simple points appears also in work of Coble, Conner and Reye in relation to the 10 nodes of a quartic symmetroid in P^3, and we provide here a modern account for some of their results.

Igusa's modular form and the classification of Siegel modular threefolds

In this paper we prove two results concerning the classification of Siegel modular threefolds. Let A_{1,d}(n) be the moduli space of abelian surfaces with a (1,d)-polarization and a full level-n structure and let A_{1,d}^{lev}(n) be the space where one has fixed an additional canonical level structure. We prove that A_{1,d}(n) is of general type if (d,n)=1 and n ist at least 4. This is the best possible result which one can prove for all d simultaneously. Let p be an odd prime and assume that (p,n)=1. Then we prove that the Voronoi compactification of A_{1,p}^{lev}(n) is smooth and has ample canonical bundle if and only if n is greater than or equal to 5.

Abelian surfaces with two plane cubic curve fibrations and Calabi-Yau threefolds

(1,d)-polarized abelian surfaces in P^(d-1) with two plane cubic curve fibrations lie in two elliptic P^2-scrolls. The union of these scrolls form a reducible Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In this paper we show that this occurs when d<10 and analyse the family of such surfaces and 3-folds in detail when d=6. In particular, the reducible Calabi-Yau 3-folds deform in that case to irreducible ones with non-normal singularities.

Nef Divisors on Moduli Spaces of Abelian Varieties

We determine the cone of nef divisors on the Voronoi compactification A_g^* of the moduli space A_g of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g for genus g=2,3. As a corollary we obtain that the spaces A_g^*(n) with level-n structure are a minimal, resp. canonical, model for g=2, n>=4, resp. n>=5 and g=3, n>=3, resp. n>=4. We give two proofs: The easy and quick one reduces the problem to \bar M_g where we can use a result of Faber. This approach cannot be generalized to higher genus g. The main point of the paper is, therefore, to give a second proof using theta functions and a result of Weissauer. This technique can be at least partially generalized to higher genus. We formulate a conjecture for the nef cone of A_g^* for all g.

Syzygies of Abelian and Bielliptic Surfaces in P^4

So far only six families of smooth irregular surfaces are known to exist in P^4 (up to pullbacks by suitable finite covers of P^4). These are the elliptic quintic scrolls, the minimal abelian and bielliptic surfaces (of degree 10), two different families of non-minimal abelian surfaces of degree 15, and one family of non-minimal bielliptic surfaces of degree 15. The main purpose of the paper is to describe the structure of the Hartshorne-Rao modules and the syzygies for each of these smooth irregular surfaces in P^4, providing at the same time a unified construction method (via syzygies) for these families of surfaces.

Minimal Siegel modular threefolds

In this paper we study the maximal extension $Γ_t^*$ of the subgroup $Γ_t$ of $\operatorname{Sp}_4 (\bq)$ which is conjugate to the paramodular group. The index of this extension is $2^{ν(t)}$ where $ν(t)$ is the number of prime divisors of $t$. The group $Γ_t^*$ defines the minimal modular threefold ${\Cal A}_t^*$ which is a finite quotient of the moduli space ${\Cal A}_t$ of $(1,t)$-polarized abelian surfaces. A certain degree 2 quotient of ${\Cal A}_t$ is a moduli space of lattice polarized $K3$ surfaces. The space ${\Cal A}_t^*$ can be interpreted as the space of Kummer surfaces associated to $(1,t)$-polarized abelian surfaces. Using the action of $Γ_t^*$ on the space of Jacobi forms we show that many spaces between ${\Cal A}_t$ and ${\Cal A}_t^*$ posess a non-trivial 3-form, i.e. the Kodaira dimension of these spaces is non-negative. Finally we determine the divisorial part of the ramification locus of the finite map ${\Cal A}_t\rightarrow {\Cal A}_t^*$ which is a union of Humbert surfaces. We interprete the corresponding Humbert surfaces as Hilbert modular surfaces.

Rational surfaces in P^4 containing a plane curve

The families of smooth rational surfaces in $\PP^4$ have been classified in degree $\le 10$. All known rational surfaces in $\PP^4$ can be represented as blow-ups of the plane $\PP^2$. The fine classification of these surfaces consists of giving explicit open and closed conditions which determine the configurations of points corresponding to all surfaces in a given family. Using a restriction argument originally due independently to Alexander and Bauer we achieve the fine classification in two cases, namely non-special rational surfaces of degree 9 and special rational surfaces of degree 8. The first case completes the fine classification of all non-special rational surfaces. In the second case we obtain a description of the moduli space as the quotient of a rational variety by the symmetric group $S_5$. We also discuss in how far this method can be used to study other rational surfaces in $\PP^4$.
