Techni-dilaton at Conformal Edge

Techni-dilaton (TD) was proposed long ago in the technicolor (TC) near criticality/conformality. To reveal the critical behavior of TD, we explicitly compute the nonperturbative contributions to the scale anomaly $<θ^μ_μ>$ and to the techni-gluon condensate $ $, which are generated by the dynamical mass m of the techni-fermions. Our computation is based on the (improved) ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation, with the gauge coupling $α$ replaced by the two-loop running one $α(μ)$ having the Caswell-Banks-Zaks IR fixed point $α_*$: $α(μ) \simeq α= α_*$ for the IR region $m < μ< Λ_{TC}$, where $Λ_{TC}$ is the intrinsic scale (analogue of $Λ_{QCD}$ of QCD) relevant to the perturbative scale anomaly. We find that $-<θ^μ_μ>/m^4\to const \ne 0$ and $ /m^4\to (α/α_{cr}-1)^{-3/2}\to\infty$ in the criticality limit $m/Λ_{TC}\sim\exp(-π/(α/α_{cr}-1)^{1/2})\to 0$ ($α=α_* \to α_{cr}$) ("conformal edge"). Our result precisely reproduces the formal identity $<θ^μ_μ>=(β(α)/4 α) $, where $β(α)=-(2α_{cr}/π) (α/α_{cr}-1)^{3/2}$ is the nonperturbative beta function corresponding to the above essential singularity scaling of $m/Λ_{TC}$. Accordingly, the PCDC implies $(M_{TD}/m)^2 (F_{TD}/m)^2=-4<θ_μ^μ>/m^4 \to const \ne 0$ at criticality limit, where $M_{TD}$ is the mass of TD and $F_{TD}$ the decay constant of TD. We thus conclude that at criticality limit the TD could become a "true (massless) Nambu-Goldstone boson" $M_{TD}/m\to 0$, only when $m/F_{TD}\to 0$, namely getting decoupled, as was the case of "holographic TD" of Haba-Matsuzaki-Yamawaki. The decoupled TD can be a candidate of dark matter.

Holographic QCD Integrated back to Hidden Local Symmetry

We develop a previously proposed gauge-invariant method to integrate out infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of vector and axialvector mesons in a class of models of holographic QCD (HQCD). The HQCD is reduced by our method to the chiral perturbation theory with the hidden local symmetry (HLS) having only the lowest KK mode identified as the HLS gauge boson. We take the Sakai-Sugimoto model as a concrete HQCD, and completely determine the ${\cal O} (p^4)$ terms as well as the ${\cal O}(p^2)$ terms from the DBI part and the anomaly-related (intrinsic parity odd) gauge-invariant terms from the CS part. Effects of higher KK modes are fully included in these terms. To demonstrate power of our method, we compute momentum-dependences of several form factors such as the pion electromagnetic form factors, the $π^0$-$γ$ and $ω$-$π^0$ transition form factors compared with experiment, which was not achieved before due to complication to handle infinite sums. We also study other anomaly-related quantities like $γ^*$-$π^0$-$π^+$-$π^-$ and $ω$-$π^0$-$π^+$-$π^-$ vertex functions.

Conformal Higgs, or techni-dilaton- composite Higgs near conformality

In contrast to the folklore that Technicolor (TC) is a "Higgsless theory", we shall discuss existence of a composite Higgs boson, Techni-Dilaton (TD), a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the scale invariance in the Scale-invariant/Walking/Conformal TC (SWC TC) which generates a large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 1$ in a wide region from the dynamical mass $m$ $= {\cal O}$ (TeV) of the techni-fermion all the way up to the intrinsic scale $Λ_{\rm TC}$ of the SWC TC (analogue of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$), where $Λ_{\rm TC} $ is taken typically as the scale of the Extended TC scale $Λ_{\rm ETC}$: $Λ_{\rm TC} \simeq Λ_{\rm ETC}\sim10^3$ TeV $ (\gg m)$. All the techni-hadrons have mass on the same order ${\cal O} (m)$, which in SWC TC is extremely smaller than the intrinsic scale $Λ_{\rm TC} \simeq Λ_{\rm ETC} $, in sharp contrast to QCD where both are of the same order. The mass of TD arises from the {\it non-perturbative scale anomaly} associated with the techni-fermion mass generation and is typically 500-600 GeV, even {\it smaller than other techni-hadrons} of the same order of ${\cal O} (m)$, in another contrast to QCD which is believed to have no scalar $\bar q q$ bound state lighter than other hadrons. We discuss the TD mass in various methods, Gauged NJL model via ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation, straightforward calculations in the ladder SD/ Bethe-Salpeter equation, and the holographic approach including techni-gluon condensate. The TD may be discovered in LHC.

Holographic Techni-dilaton

Techni-dilaton, a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of scale symmetry, was predicted long ago in the Scale-invariant/Walking/Conformal Technicolor (SWC-TC) as a remnant of the (approximate) scale symmetry associated with the conformal fixed point, based on the conformal gauge dynamics of ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation with non-running coupling. We study the techni-dilaton as a flavor-singlet bound state of techni-fermions by including the techni-gluon condensate (tGC) effect into the previous (bottom-up) holographic approach to the SWC-TC, a deformation of the holographic QCD with $γ_m \simeq 0$ by large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 1$. With including a bulk scalar field corresponding to the gluon condensate, we first improve the Operator Product Expansion of the current correlators so as to reproduce gluonic $1/Q^4$ term both in QCD and SWC-TC. We find in QCD about $10\%$ (negative) contribution of gluon condensate to the $ρ$ meson mass. We also calculate the oblique electroweak $S$-parameter in the presence of the effect of the tGC and find that for the fixed value of $S$ the tGC effects dramatically reduce the flavor-singlet scalar (techni-dilaton) mass $M_{\rm TD}$ (in the unit of $F_π$), while the vector and axial-vector masses $M_ρ$ and $M_{a_1}$ are rather insensitive to the tGC, where $F_π$ is the decay constant of the techni-pion. If we use the range of values of tGC implied by the ladder SD analysis of the non-perturbative scale anomaly in the large $N_f$ QCD near the conformal window, the phenomenological constraint $S \simeq 0.1$ predicts the techni-dilaton mass $M_{\rm TD} \sim 600$ GeV which is within reach of LHC discovery.

Holographic Techni-dilaton, or Conformal Higgs

We study a holographic model dual to walking/conformal technicolor (W/C TC) deforming a hard-wall type of bottom-up setup by including effects from techni-gluon condensation. We calculate masses of (techni-) $ρ$ meson, $a_1$ meson, and flavor/chiral-singlet scalar meson identified with techni-dilaton (TD)/conformal Higgs boson, as well as the $S$ parameter. It is shown that gluon contributions and large anomalous dimension tend to decrease specifically mass of the TD. In the typical model with $S \simeq 0.1$, we find $m_{\rm TD} \simeq 600$ GeV, while $m_ρ,m_{a_1} \simeq 4 {\rm TeV}$.

Quest for the Dynamical Origin of Mass - An LHC perspective from Sakata, Nambu and Maskawa

I review the dynamical symmetry breaking (DSB) approach to the Origin of Mass, which is traced back to the original (2008 Nobel prize) work of Nambu based on the BCS analogue of superconductor where mass of nucleon (then elementary particle) arises due to Cooper paring and pions are provided as massless Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons, being composite as in Fermi-Yang/Sakata model. In this talk I will focus on the modern version of DSB or composite Higgs models: Walking/Conformal Technicolor, Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) or Moose, and Top Quark Condensate, with the their extra dimension versions closely related with HLS. Particular emphasis will be placed on the large anomalous dimension and conformal symmetry at the conformal fixed points, developed along the line of the pioneering work of Maskawa and Nakajima. Due to (approximate) conformal symmetry these models do have composite Higgs particle ("Techni-dilaton", "Top-sigma" etc.). Weakly coupled composite gauge boson is realized at "Vector Manifestation" formulated at conformal fixed point, which may be applied to the composite W/Z boson models. They will be tested in the upcoming LHC experiments.

$S$ Parameter in the Holographic Walking/Conformal Technicolor

We explicitly calculate the $S$ parameter in entire parameter space of the holographic walking/conformal technicolor (W/C TC), based on the deformation of the holographic QCD by varying the anomalous dimension from $γ_m \simeq 0$ through $γ_m \simeq 1$ continuously. The $S$ parameter is given as a positive monotonic function of $ξ$ which is fairly insensitive to $γ_m$ and continuously vanishes as $S \sim ξ^2 \to 0$ when $ξ\to 0$, where $ξ$ is the vacuum expectation value of the bulk scalar field at the infrared boundary of the 5th dimension $z=z_m$ and is related to the mass of (techni-) $ρ$ meson ($M_ρ$) and the decay constant ($f_π$) as $ξ\sim f_πz_m \sim f_π/M_ρ$ for $ξ\ll 1$. However, although $ξ$ is related to the techni-fermion condensate $\condense$, we find no particular suppression of $ξ$ and hence of $S$ due to large $γ_m$, based on the correct identification of the renormalization-point dependence of $\condense$ in contrast to the literature. Then we argue possible behaviors of $f_π/M_ρ$ as $\condense \to 0$ near the conformal window characterized by the Banks-Zaks infrared fixed point in more explicit dynamics with $γ_m \simeq 1$. It is a curious coincidence that the result from ladder Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations well fits in the parameter space obtained in this paper. When $f_π/M_ρ\to 0$ is realized, the holography suggests a novel possibility that $f_π$ vanishes much faster than the dynamical mass $m$ does.

Anatomy of Top-Mode Extended Technicolor Model

We analyze two versions of the extended technicolor (ETC) incorporating the top quark condensate via the flavor-universal coloron type topcolor $SU(3)_1 \times SU(3)_2$: A straightforward top-mode ETC having quarks and techniquarks assigned to a single (strong) $SU(3)_1$, and a ``twisted model'' with techniquarks carrying the weak $SU(3)_2$ while quarks the strong $SU(3)_1$. The straightforward model has the same ETC structure as that of Appelquist et al. without topcolor which we first analyze to find that it yields only too small ETC-induced mass for the third generation. In contrast, our model having topcolor takes the form of a version of the topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) after ETC breakings, which triggers the top quark condensate giving rise to a realistic top mass. However, techniquarks have the strong topcolor $SU(3)_1$ in addition to the already strong walking/conformal technicolor, which triggers the techniquark condensate at scale much higher than the weak scale, a disaster. We then consider a ``twisted model'' of TC2, though not an explicit ETC. We find a new feature that ``ETC''-induced quark mass is enhanced to the realistic value by the large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 2$ of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-type topcolor interactions. The result roughly reproduces the realistic quark masses. We further find a novel effect of the above large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 2$: The top-pion mass has a universal upper bound, $m_{π_t} < 70 \GeV$, in the generic TC2 model.

Z Boson Propagator Correction in Technicolor Theories with ETC Effects Included

We calculate the Z boson propagator correction, as described by the S parameter, in technicolor theories with extended technicolor interactions included. Our method is to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the requisite current-current correlation functions. Our results suggest that the inclusion of extended technicolor interactions has a relatively small effect on S.

Top Mode Standard Model in Six Dimensions

We construct a top-mode standard model where the third generation fermions and the SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y gauge bosons are put on a 6-dimensional brane(5-brane) with the extra dimensions compactified on the TeV scale(R_5^{-1}=R_6^{-1} \equiv R^{-1}= 1-10 TeV), while only the gluons live in a compactified 8-dimensional bulk(R_7^{-1}=R_8^{-1} \equiv Λ\gg R^{-1}).On the 5-brane, Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the bulk gluons give rise to induced four-fermion interactions which, combined with the gauge interactions, are shown to be strong enough to trigger the top quark condensate, based on the dynamics of 6-dimensional gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Moreover, we can use a freedom of the brane positions to tune the four-fermion coupling close to the critical line of 6-dimensional gauged NJL model, so that the gap equation can ensure the top condensate on the weak scale while keeping other fermions massless. There actually exists a scale (``tMAC scale''), Λ_{\rm tM} = (7.8-11.0) R^{-1}, where the running gauge couplings combined with the induced four-fermion interactions trigger only the top condensate while no bottom and tau condensates. Furthermore, presence of such explicit four-fermion interactions enables us to formulate straightforwardly the compositeness conditions at Λ=Λ_{\rm tM}, which, through the renormalization-group analysis, yields a prediction of masses of the top quark and the Higgs boson, m_t = 177 - 187 GeV and m_H = 183 - 207 GeV.

pi^+ - pi^0 mass difference and S parameter in the large N_f QCD

In the framework of the Schwinger-Dyson equation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the improved ladder approximation, we calculate the S parameter and an analogue of the π^+ - π^0 mass difference Δm_π^2 \equiv m_{π^+}^2 -m_{π^0}^2 as well as the NG boson decay constant f_πon the same footing in the large N_f QCD, through the difference between the vector current correlator Π_{VV} and the axial-vector current correlator Π_{AA}. Approaching the chiral phase transition point α_*\to α_{\rm cr} (=π/4) from the broken phase, where α_* is the the gauge coupling on the infrared fixed point, Δm_π^2 as well as f_π^2 goes to zero with the essential-singularity scaling (Miransky scaling), while the ratio indicates a blowing up enhancement reflecting the characteristic behavior of the large N_f QCD as a walking theory which is expected to scale as Δm_π^2/f_π^2 \sim (α_*/α_{\rm cr}-1)^{-1/2}. On the other hand, the S parameter takes values somewhat smaller than that of the real-life QCD and indicates slightly decreasing tendency as we approach the phase transition point.

Top mode standard model and extra dimensions

We perform the most attractive channel (MAC) analysis in the top mode standard model with TeV-scale extra dimensions, where the standard model gauge bosons and the third generation of quarks and leptons are put in D(=6,8,...) dimensions. In order to make the scenario viable, only the attractive force of the top condensate should exceed the critical coupling, while other channels such as the bottom and tau condensates should not. It turns out that the top condensate can be the MAC for D=8, whereas the tau condensation is favored for D=6. On the basis of the renormalization group equations for the top Yukawa and Higgs quartic couplings, we predict masses of the top quark and the Higgs boson for D=8 as m_t=172-175 GeV and m_H=176-188 GeV, respectively.

Gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with extra dimensions

We investigate phase structure of the D (> 4)-dimensional gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with $δ(=D-4)$ extra dimensions compactified on TeV scale, based on the improved ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation in the bulk. We assume that the bulk running gauge coupling in the SD equation for the SU(N_c) gauge theory with N_f massless flavors is given by the truncated Kaluza-Klein effective theory and hence has a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point (UVFP). We find the critical line in the parameter space of two couplings, the gauge coupling and the four-fermion coupling, which is similar to that of the gauged NJL model with fixed (walking) gauge coupling in four dimensions. It is shown that in the presence of such walking gauge interactions the four-fermion interactions become ``nontrivial'' even in higher dimensions, similarly to the four-dimensional gauged NJL model. Such a nontriviality holds only in the restricted region of the critical line (``nontrivial window'') with the gauge coupling larger than a non-vanishing value (``marginal triviality (MT)'' point), in contrast to the four-dimensional case where such a nontriviality holds for all regions of the critical line except for the pure NJL point. In the nontrivial window the renormalized effective potential yields a nontrivial interaction which is conformal invariant. The exisitence of the nontrivial window implies ``cutoff insensitivity'' of the physics prediction in spite of the ultraviolet dominance of the dynamics. In the formal limit D -> 4, the nontrivial window coincides with the known condition of the nontriviality of the four-dimensional gauged NJL model, $9/(2N_c) < N_f - N_c < 9/2 N_c$.

pi^+ - pi^0 mass difference from the Bethe-Salpeter equation

In the framework of the Schwinger-Dyson equation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the improved ladder approximation, we calculate the pi^+ - pi^0 mass difference on the same footing as the pion decay constant and the QCD S parameter (or L_{10}) through the difference between the vector current correlator Π_{VV} and the axial-vector current correlator Π_{AA}. We find that all the results can be fit to the experimental values for rather large Lambda_{QCD} \sim 700 MeV which reflects the ``scale ambiguity''. By fitting to the calculated data using the pole saturated form of Π_{VV} - Π_{AA}, we also derive masses and decay constants of rho meson and a_1 meson, which we found are consistent with the experiments rather insensitively to the ``scale ambiguity''.

Topped MAC with extra dimensions?

We perform the most attractive channel (MAC) analysis in the top mode standard model with TeV-scale extra dimensions, where the standard model gauge bosons and the third generation of quarks and leptons are put in D(=6,8,10,...) dimensions. In such a model, bulk gauge couplings rapidly grow in the ultraviolet region. In order to make the scenario viable, only the attractive force of the top condensate should exceed the critical coupling, while other channels such as the bottom and tau condensates should not. We then find that the top condensate can be the MAC for D=8, whereas the tau condensation is favored for D=6. The analysis for D=10 strongly depends on the regularization scheme. We predict masses of the top (m_t) and the Higgs (m_H), m_t=172-175 GeV and m_H=176-188 GeV for D=8, based on the renormalization group for the top Yukawa and Higgs quartic couplings with the compositeness conditions at the scale where the bulk top condenses. The Higgs boson in such a characteristic mass range will be immediately discovered in H -> WW^(*)/ZZ^(*) once the LHC starts.

Meson masses in large Nf QCD from the Bethe-Salpeter equation

We solve the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter (HBS) equation for the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector bound states of quark and anti-quark in large Nf QCD with the improved ladder approximation in the Landau gauge. The quark mass function in the HBS equation is obtained from the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation in the same approximation for consistency with the chiral symmetry. Amazingly, due to the fact that the two-loop running coupling of large Nf QCD is explicitly written in terms of an analytic function, large Nf QCD turns out to be the first example in which the SD equation can be solved in the complex plane and hence the HBS equation directly in the time-like region. We find that approaching the chiral phase transition point from the broken phase, the scalar, vector, and axial-vector meson masses vanish to zero with the same scaling behavior, all degenerate with the massless pseudoscalar meson. This may suggest a new type of manifestation of the chiral symmetry restoration in large Nf QCD.

Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from Extra Dimensions

We study the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking (DEWSB) in the $D (=6,8,...)$-dimensional bulk with compactified extra dimensions. We identify the critical binding strength for triggering the DEWSB, based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation. In the top mode standard model with extra dimensions, where the standard model gauge bosons and the third generation of quarks and leptons are put in the bulk, we analyze the most attractive channel (MAC) by using renormalization group equations (RGEs) of (dimensionless) bulk gauge couplings and determine the effective cutoff where the MAC coupling exceeds the critical value. We then find that the top-condensation can take place for D=8. Combining RGEs of top-Yukawa and Higgs-quartic couplings with compositeness conditions, we predict the top mass, $m_t=173-180$ GeV, and the Higgs mass, $m_H=181-211$ GeV, for D=8, where we took the universal compactification scale $1/R = 1-100$ TeV.
