pi+ pi0 Mass Difference in the Hidden Local Symmetry: A Dynamical Origin of Little Higgs

We calculate pi+ pi0 mass difference $Δm_π^2 \equiv m_{π^+}^2 -m_{π^0}^2$ in the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model, based on the Wilsonian matching and Wilsonian renormalization-group equations. Even without a1 meson the result agrees well with the experiment in sharp contrast to the conventional approach where the a1 meson plays a crucial role. For large Nf QCD, there arises a large hierarchy between $Δm_π^2$ and the pi decay constant $F_π^2$, $Δm_π^2/F_π^2 \ll 1$, near the critical point where the chiral symmetry gets restored as the vector manifestation and the HLS model becomes a little Higgs model with two sites and two links, with the dynamically generated gauge coupling of the composite rho becoming vanishingly small.

Hidden Local Symmetry at Loop -- A New Perspective of Composite Gauge Boson and Chiral Phase Transition

We develop an effective field theory of QCD and QCD-like theories, based on the hidden local symmetry (HLS) model. We formulate the chiral perturbation theory with loops of rho as well as pi and further include quadratic divergences which are crucial to the chiral phase transition. Detailed calculations of the one-loop renormalization-group equation of the parameters of the HLS model are given, with the bare parameters (defined at cutoff Lambda) determined by the matching (``Wilsonian matching'') with the underlying QCD at Lambda through the operator-product expansion of current correlators. The Wilsonian matching predicts low energy phenomenology for the three-flavored QCD in remarkable agreement with the experiments. When the chiral symmetry restoration takes place in the underlying QCD, the HLS model uniquely leads to the Vector Manifestation (VM) as a new pattern of Wigner realization of chiral symmetry, with the rho becoming degenerate with the massless pi as the chiral partner. The VM is in fact realized in the large Nf QCD when Nf to Nf^{crit}-0, with Nf^{crit} = 5 Nc/3 being in rough agreement with the lattice simulation for Nc=3. The VM can be realized also in hot and/or dense QCD.

Fate of Vector Dominance in the Effective Field Theory

We reveal the full phase structure of the effective field theory for QCD, based on the hidden local symmetry (HLS) through the one-loop renormalization group equation including quadratic divergences. We then show that vector dominance (VD) is not a sacred discipline of the effective field theory but rather an accidental phenomenon peculiar to three-flavored QCD. In particular, the chiral symmetry restoration in HLS model takes place in a wide phase boundary surface, on which the VD is realized nowhere. This suggests that VD may not be valid for chiral symmetry restoration in hot and/or dense QCD.

Does DLCQ S-matrix have a covariant continuum limit?

We develop a systematic DLCQ perturbation theory and show that DLCQ S-matrix does not have a covariant continuum limit for processes with $p^+=0$ exchange. This implies that the role of the zero mode is more subtle than ever considered in DLCQ and hence must be treated with great care also in non-perturbative approach. We also make a brief comment on DLCQ in string theory.

Top Mode Standard Model with Extra Dimensions

We critically examine a version of the top mode standard model recently cast in extra dimensions by Arkani-Hamed, Cheng, Dobrescu, and Hall, based on the (improved) ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation for the D-(=6,8-)-dimensional gauge theories. We find that the bulk QCD cannot have larger coupling beyond the non-trivial ultraviolet (UV) fixed point, the existence of which is supported by a recent lattice analysis. The coupling strength at the fixed point is evaluated by using the one-loop renormalization group equation. It is then found that, in a version with only the third family (as well as the gauge bosons) living in the D-dimensional bulk, the critical (dimensionless) coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking to occur is larger than the UV fixed point of the bulk QCD coupling for D=6, while smaller for D=8. We further find that the improved ladder SD equation in D dimensions has an approximate scale-invariance due to the running of the coupling and hence has an essential-singularity scaling of the ``conformal phase transition,'' similar to Miransky scaling in the four-dimensional ladder SD equation with a nonrunning coupling. This essential-singularity scaling can resolve the fine-tuning even when the cutoff (``string scale'') is large. Such a theory has a large anomalous dimension γ_m=D/2 - 1 and is expected to be free from the flavor-changing-neutral-current problem as in walking technicolor for D=4. Furthermore, the induced bulk Yukawa coupling becomes finite even at infinite cutoff limit (in the formal sense), similarly to the renormalizability of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Comments are made on the use of the ``effective'' coupling, which includes finite renormalization effects, instead of the \bar{MS} running coupling in the improved ladder SD equation.

Wilsonian Matching of Effective Field Theory with Underlying QCD

We propose a novel way of matching effective field theory with the underlying QCD in the sense of a Wilsonian renormalization group equation (RGE). We derive Wilsonian matching conditions between current correlators obtained by the operator product expansion in QCD and those by the hidden local symmetry (HLS) model. This determines without much ambiguity the bare parameters of the HLS at the cutoff scale in terms of the QCD parameters. Physical quantities for the pi and rho system are calculated by the Wilsonian RGE's from the bare parameters in remarkable agreement with the experiment.

Vector Manifestation of the Chiral Symmetry

We propose ``vector manifestation (VM)'' of the Wigner realization of the chiral symmetry in which the symmetry is restored at the critical point by the massless degenerate pion (and its flavor partners) and rho meson (and its flavor partners) as the chiral partner, in sharp contrast to the traditional manifestation á la linear sigma model where the symmetry is restored by the degenerate pion and scalar meson. The application to the chiral phase transition of the large Nf QCD is performed using the hidden local symmetry Lagrangian. Combined with the Wilsonian matching proposed recently, the VM determines the critical number of massless flavors Nf \simeq 5 without much ambiguity.

Conformal Phase Transition and Fate of the Hidden Local Symmetry in Large N_f QCD

It is observed that the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) for the vector mesons in the ordinary QCD with smaller N_f plays the role of the "Higgsed magnetic gauge symmetry" for the Seiberg duality in the SUSY QCD. For large N_f where the conformal phase transition with chiral restoration and deconfinement is expected to take place, we find that the HLS model also exhibits the chiral restoration by the loop corrections (including the quadratic divergence) in a manner similar to that in the CP^{N-1} model, provided that the bare HLS Lagrangian respects the Georgi's vector limit at a certain N_f (\approx 7).

Zero-Mode Problem on the Light Front

A series of lectures are given to discuss the zero-mode problem on the light-front (LF) quantization with special emphasis on the peculiar realization of the trivial vacuum, the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) and the Lorentz invariance. We discuss Discrete Light-Cone Quantization (DLCQ) which was first introduced by Maskawa and Yamawaki (MY). Following MY, we present canonical formalism of DLCQ and the zero-mode constraint through which the zero mode can actually be solved away in terms of other modes, thus establishing the trivial vacuum. Due to this trivial vacuum, existence of the massless Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson coupled to the current is guaranteed by the non-conserved charge such that Q |0> = 0 and dot{Q} ne 0. The SSB (NG phase) in DLCQ can be realized on the trivial vacuum only when an explicit symmetry-breaking mass of the NG boson m_{pi} is introduced so that the NG-boson zero mode integrated over the LF exhibits singular behavior sim 1/m_{pi}^2 in such a way that dot{Q} ne 0 in the symmetric limit m_{pi} -> 0. We also demonstrate this realization more explicitly in the linear sigma model where the role of zero-mode constraint is clarified. We fur ther point out, in disagreement with Wilson et al., that for SSB in the continuum LF theory, the trivial vacuum collapses due to the special nature of the zero mode as the accumulating point P^+ -> 0, in sharp contrast to DLCQ. Finally, we discuss the no-go theorem of Nakanishi and Yamawaki, which forbids exact LF r estriction of the field theory. Thus DLCQ as well as any other regularization on the exact LF has no Lorentz-invariant limit as the theory itself, although the Lorentz-invariant limit can be realized on the c-number quantity like S matrix which has no reference to the fixed LF.

Zero Mode and Symmetry Breaking on the Light Front

We discuss the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) on the light front (LF) in view of the zero mode. We first demonstrate impossibility to remove the zero mode in the continuum LF theory by two examples: The Lorentz invariance forbids even a free theory on the LF and the trivial LF vacuum is lost in the SSB phase, both due to the zero mode as the accumulating point causing uncontrollable infrared singularity. We then adopt the Discretized Light-Cone Quantization (DLCQ) which was first introduced by Maskawa and Yamawaki to establish the trivial LF vacuum and was re-discovered by Pauli and Brodsky in a different context. It is shown in DLCQ that the SSB phase can be realized on the trivial LF vacuum only when an explicit symmetry-breaking mass of the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson m_pi is introduced as an infrared regulator. The NG-boson zero mode integrated over the LF must exhibit singular behavior sim 1/m_{pi}^2 in the symmetric limit m_{pi} rightarrow 0 in such a way that the LF charge is not conserved even in the symmetric limit; dot{Q} ne 0. There exists no NG theorem on the LF. Instead, this singular behavior establishes existence of the massless NG boson coupled to the current whose charge satisfies Q |0 >=0 and dot{Q} ne 0, in much the same as the NG theorem in the equal-time quantization which ensures existence of the massless NG boson coupled to the current whose charge satisfies Q|0 > ne 0 and dot{Q} = 0. We demonstrate such a peculiarity in a concrete model, the linear sigma model, where the role of zero-mode constraint is clarified.

Top Quark Condensate in Grand Unified Theories

We propose a top quark condensate scenario embedded in grand unified theories (GUTs), stressing that the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model has a nontrivial continuum limit (``renormalizability'') under certain condition which is actually satisfied in all sensible GUTs with simple group. The top quark mass prediction in this scenario is shown to be insensitive to the ultraviolet cutoff $Λ$ thanks to the ``renormalizability''. We also discuss a possibility to reduce the top mass prediction in this scenario.

Conformal Phase Transition in Gauge Theories

The conception of the conformal phase transiton (CPT), which is relevant for the description of non-perturbative dynamics in gauge theories, is introduced and elaborated. The main features of such a phase transition are established. In particular, it is shown that in the CPT there is an abrupt change of the spectrum of light excitations at the critical point, though the phase transition is continuous. The structure of the effective action describing the CPT is elaborated and its connection with the dynamics of the partially conserved dilatation current is pointed out. The applications of these results to QCD, models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and to the description of the phase diagram in (3+1)-dimensional $ SU(N_c)$ gauge theories are considered.

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in a Gauge Theory ``Thirring Model''

Dynamical fermion mass generation is studied in the three-dimensional Thirring model reformulated as a gauge theory by introducing hidden local symmetry. The analysis by use of Schwinger-Dyson equation is shown to exhibit a critical behavior as the number $N$ of four-component fermions approaches $N_{\rm cr}=128/3π^{2}$.

Top Quark Condensate Revisited

In the light of recent discovery of a very heavy top quark, we reexamine the top quark condensate model proposed by Miransky, Tanabashi and Yamawaki (MTY) and by Nambu. We first review the original MTY formulation based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation and the Pagels-Stokar formula. It is particularly emphasized that the critical phenomenon gives a simple reason why the top quark can have an extremely large mass compared with other quarks and leptons. Then we discuss the Bardeen-Hill-Lindner (BHL) formulation based on the renormalization-group equation and the compositeness condition, which successfully picks up 1/N_c-sub-leading effects disregarded by MTY. In fact BHL is equivalent to MTY at the 1/N_c-leading order. Such a simplest version of the model predicts the top quark mass, m_t \simeq 250 GeV (MTY) and m_t \simeq 220 GeV (BHL), for the cutoff on the Planck scale. In this version we cannot take the cutoff beyond the Landau pole of U(1)_Y gauge coupling, which yields a minimum value of the top mass prediction m_t \simeq 200 GeV. We then propose a ``top mode walking GUT'' : The standard gauge groups are unified into a (``walking'') GUT so that the cutoff can be taken to infinity thanks to the renormalizability of the four-fermion theory coupled to ``walking'' gauge theory. The top and Higgs mass prediction is then controlled by the Pendleton-Ross infrared fixed point at GUT scale and can naturally lead to m_t \simeq m_H \simeq 180 GeV.

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking with Large Anomalous Dimension

We give an introduction to the dynamical symmetry breaking with large anomalous dimension. This is the basis of tightly bound composite Higgs models such as walking technicolor, strong ETC technicolor and top quark condensate, which are all characterized by the large anomalous dimension, γ_m \simeq 1 (walking technicolor), 1<γ_m<2 (strong ETC technicolor) and γ_m \simeq 2 (top quark condensate) due to nontrivial short distance dynamics of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) models (gauge theories plus four-fermion interactions). Particular emphasis will be placed on the top quark condensate in which the critical phenomenon in the gauged NJL model yields a simple reason why the top quark can have an extremely large mass compared with other quarks and leptons. Topics will also cover a recent observation that the four-fermion theory {\it in the presence of gauge interactions} (gauged NJL model) can become renormalizable and nontrivial in sharp contrast to the pure NJL model without gauge interactions. The requirement of this renormalizability/nontriviality of the gauged NJL model can be applied to the top quark condensate when the standard gauge groups are unified into a GUT with ``walking'' coupling, which then naturally leads to the top quark and the Higgs masses both around 180 GeV.

NAMBU-GOLDSTONE BOSON ON THE LIGHT-FRONT

Spontaneous breakdown of the continuous symmetry is studied in the framework of discretized light-front quantization. We consider linear sigma model in 3+1 dimensions and show that the careful treatment of zero modes together with the regularization of the theory by introducing NG boson mass leads to the correct description of Nambu-Goldstone phase on the light-front.

Can the Nambu-Goldstone Boson Live on the Light-Front?

We show that the Nambu-Goldstone(NG) boson restricted on the light-front(LF) can only exist if we regularize the theory by introducing the explicit breaking NG-boson mass $m_π$. The NG-boson zero mode, when integrated over the LF, must have a singular behavior $\sim 1/m^2_π$ in the symmetric limit of $m^2_π\rightarrow 0$. In the discretized LF quantization this peculiarity is clarified in terms of the zero-mode constraints in the linear $σ$ model. The LF charge annihilates the vacuum, while it is not conserved in the symmetric limit in the NG phase.

Thirring Model as a Gauge Theory

We reformulate the Thirring model in $D$ $(2 \le D < 4)$ dimensions as a gauge theory by introducing $U(1)$ hidden local symmetry (HLS) and study the dynamical mass generation of the fermion through the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation. By virtue of such a gauge symmetry we can greatly simplify the analysis of the SD equation by taking the most appropriate gauge (``nonlocal gauge'') for the HLS. In the case of even-number of (2-component) fermions, we find the dynamical fermion mass generation as the second order phase transition at certain fermion number, which breaks the chiral symmetry but preserves the parity in (2+1) dimensions ($D=3$). In the infinite four-fermion coupling (massless gauge boson) limit in (2+1) dimensions, the result coincides with that of the (2+1)-dimensional QED, with the critical number of the 4-component fermion being $N_{\rm cr} = \frac{128}{3π^{2}}$. As to the case of odd-number (2-component) fermion in (2+1) dimensions, the regularization ambiguity on the induced Chern-Simons term may be resolved by specifying the regularization so as to preserve the HLS. Our method also applies to the (1+1) dimensions, the result being consistent with the exact solution. The bosonization mechanism in (1+1) dimensional Thirring model is also reproduced in the context of dual-transformed theory for the HLS.
