Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model vs QCD

We argue that the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model which introduces four-quark interactions to describe hadron physics at low energies can be confronted with fundamental quantum chromodynamics by means of spectral sum rules. While there arise rather restrictive bounds on the strength of the effective four-quark interaction in the vector channel, introduction of the four-quark interaction in the pseudoscalar channel resolves a long standing puzzle of the sum rules.

Extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model vs QCD Sum Rules

We argue that the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of hadrons can be be probed and constrained in a nontrivial way via QCD sum rules. While there arise rather restrictive bounds on the strength of the effective four-fermion interaction in the vector channel, introduction of the four-fermion interaction in the pseudoscalar channel could resolve a long standing puzzle of QCD sum rules. We speculate also on possible connection between effective four-quark interactions describing the low-energy phenomenology and ultraviolet renormalons of the fundamental QCD.

Phase Structure of the Gauged Yukawa Model

Based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation, we investigate phase struc- ture of the gauged Yukawa model possessing a global $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry and an unbroken (vector-like) gauge symmetry. We show that even when we tune the squared mass of the scalar boson in the Lagrangian to be positive, there still exists the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking due to fermion pair condensate (VEV of the composite scalar) triggered by the strong Yukawa coupling larger than a certain critical value. We find a "nontrivial ultraviolet fixed line" and "renormalized trajectories" in the three-dimensional coupling space of the Yukawa coupling, the gauge cou- pling and the "hopping parameter" of the elementary scalar field. Presence of the gauge coupling is crucial to existence of the fixed line. Implications of the result for the lattice calculation and the top quark condensate model are also discussed.

Low Energy Theorems of Hidden Local Symmetries

We prove to all orders of the loop expansion the low energy theorems of hidden local symmetries in four-dimensional nonlinear sigma models based on the coset space $G/H$, with $G$ and $H$ being arbitrary compact groups. Although the models are non-renormalizable, the proof is done in an analogous manner to the renormalization proof of gauge theories and two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models by restricting ourselves to the operators with two derivatives (counting a hidden gauge boson field as one derivative), i.e., with dimension 2, which are the only operators relevant to the low energy limit. Through loop-wise mathematical induction based on the Ward-Takahashi identity for the BRS symmetry, we solve renormalization equation for the effective action up to dimension-2 terms plus terms with the relevant BRS sources. We then show that all the quantum corrections to the dimension-2 operators, including the finite parts as well as the divergent ones, can be entirely absorbed into a re-definition (renormalization) of the parameters and the fields in the dimension-2 part of the tree-level Lagrangian.

Proving the Low Energy Theorem of Hidden Local Symmetry

Based on the Ward-Takahashi identity for the BRS symmetry, we prove to all orders of the loop expansion the low energy theorem of hidden local symmetry for the vector mesons (KSRF (I) relation) in the $U(N)_{\rm L}$ $\times$ $U(N)_{\rm R}$ / $U(N)_{\rm V}$ nonlinear chiral Lagrangian.

Renormalization in the Gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

Based on the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective potential, we extensively study nonperturbative renormalization of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in the ladder approximation with standing gauge coupling. Although the pure Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is not renormalizable, presence of the gauge interaction makes it possible that the theory is renormalized as an interacting continuum theory at the critical line in the ladder approximation. Extra higher dimensional operators (``counter terms'') are not needed for the theory to be renormalized. By virtue of the effective potential approach, the renormalization (``symmetric renormalization'') is performed in a phase-independent manner both for the symmetric and the spontaneously broken phases of the chiral symmetry. We explicitly obtain $β$ function having a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed line for the renormalized coupling as well as the bare one. In both phases the anomalous dimension is very large ($ \ge 1$) without discontinuity across the fixed line. Operator product expansion is explicitly constructed, which is consistent with the large anomalous dimension owing to the appearance of the nontrivial extra power behavior in the Wilson coefficient for the unit operator. The symmetric renormalization breaks down at the critical gauge coupling, which is cured by the generalized renormalization scheme (``$\tM$-dependent renormalization''). Also emphasized is the formal resemblance to the four-fermion theory in less than four dimensions which is renormalizable in $1/N$ expansion.

Tightly Bound Composite Higgs

We explain general features of the tightly bound composite Higgs models proposed in recent years; walking technicolor, strong ETC technicolor, and a top quark condensate, etc.. These models are all characterized by the large anomalous dimension due to nontrivial short distance dynamics in the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models (gauge theories plus four-fermion interactions).

Hidden Local Symmetry at One Loop

We show that one-loop corrections with the hidden gauge boson loop preserve in the low energy limit all the successful tree level predictions of the hidden local symmetry in the SU(2)${}_L$$\times$SU(2)${}_R$$/$SU(2)${}_V$ chiral Lagrangian. Most amazingly, the $ρ$ meson dominance of the pion electromagnetic form factor survives the one-loop corrections at any momentum, if and only if we take the parameter choice $a=2$. For the choice $a=1$ (``vector limit"), $a$ is not renormalized ($Z_a=1$) and no deviation from $a=1$ is induced by the loop effects of the hidden gauge bosons. Actually, $a=1$ is a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point.
