Replica symmetry breaking in an adiabatic spin-glass model of adaptive evolution

We study evolutionary canalization using a spin-glass model with replica theory, where spins and their interactions are dynamic variables whose configurations correspond to phenotypes and genotypes, respectively. The spins are updated under temperature T_S, and the genotypes evolve under temperature T_J, according to the evolutionary fitness. It is found that adaptation occurs at T_S < T_S^{RS}, and a replica symmetric phase emerges at T_S^{RSB} < T_S < T_S^{RS}. The replica symmetric phase implies canalization, and replica symmetry breaking at lower temperatures indicates loss of robustness.

Partial annealing of a coupled mean-field spin-glass model with an embedded pattern

A partially annealed mean-field spin-glass model with a locally embedded pattern is studied. The model consists of two dynamical variables, spins and interactions, that are in contact with thermal baths at temperatures T_S and T_J, respectively. Unlike the quenched system, characteristic correlations among the interactions are induced by the partial annealing. The model exhibits three phases, which are paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and spin-glass phases. In the ferromagnetic phase, the embedded pattern is stably realized. The phase diagram depends significantly on the ratio of two temperatures n=T_J/T_S. In particular, a reentrant transition from the embedded ferromagnetic to the spin-glass phases with T_S decreasing is found only below at a certain value of n. This indicates that above the critical value n_c the embedded pattern is supported by local field from a non-embedded region. Some equilibrium properties of the interactions in the partial annealing are also discussed in terms of frustration.

A statistical-mechanical study of evolution of robustness in noisy environment

In biological systems, expression dynamics that can provide fitted phenotype patterns with respect to a specific function have evolved through mutations. This has been observed in the evolution of proteins for realizing folding dynamics through which a target structure is shaped. We study this evolutionary process by introducing a statistical-mechanical model of interacting spins, where a configuration of spins and their interactions $\bm{J}$ represent a phenotype and genotype, respectively. The phenotype dynamics are given by a stochastic process with temperature $T_{S}$ under a Hamiltonian with $\bm{J}$. The evolution of $\bm{J}$ is also stochastic with temperature $T_{J}$ and follows mutations introduced into $\bm{J}$ and selection based on a fitness defined for a configuration of a given set of target spins. Below a certain temperature $T_{S}^{c2}$, the interactions $\bm{J}$ that achieve the target pattern evolve, whereas another phase transition is observed at $T_{S}^{c1}<T_{S}^{c2}$. At low temperatures $T_{S}<T_{S}^{c1}$, the Hamiltonian exhibits a spin-glass like phase, where the dynamics toward the target pattern require long time steps, and the fitness often decreases drastically as a result of a single mutation to $\bm{J}$. In the intermediate-temperature region, the dynamics to shape the target pattern proceed rapidly and are robust to mutations of $\bm{J}$. The interactions in this region have no frustration around the target pattern and results in funnel-type dynamics. We propose that the ubiquity of funnel-type dynamics, as observed in protein folding, is a consequence of evolution subjected to thermal noise beyond a certain level; this also leads to mutational robustness of the fitness.

Thermodynamic Construction of an One-Step Replica-Symmetry-Breaking Solution in Finite Connectivity Spin Glasses

An one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solution for finite connectivity spin-glass models with K body interaction is constructed at finite temperature using the replica method and thermodynamic constraints. In the absence of external fields, this construction provides a general extension of replica symmetric solution at finite replica number to one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solution. It is found that this result is formally equivalent to that of the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking cavity method. To confirm the validity of the obtained solution, Monte Carlo simulations are performed for K = 2 and 3. The thermodynamic quantities of the Monte Carlo results extrapolated to a large-size limit are consistent with those estimated by our solution for K = 2 at all simulated temperatures and for K = 3 except near the transition temperature.

Funnel landscape and mutational robustness as a result of evolution under thermal noise

In biological systems, expression dynamics to shape a fitted phenotype for function has evolved through mutations to genes, as observed in the evolution of funnel landscape in protein. We study this evolutionary process with a statistical-mechanical model of interacting spins, where the fitted phenotype is represented by a configuration of a given set of "target spins" and interaction matrix J among spins is genotype evolving over generations. The expression dynamics is given by stochastic process with temperature T_S to decrease energy for a given set of J. The evolution of J is also stochastic with temperature T_J, following mutation in J and selection based on a fitness given by configurations of the target spins. Below a certain temperature T_S^{c2}, the highly adapted J evolves, whereasanother phase transition characterised by frustration occurs at T_S^{c1}<T_S^{c2}. At temperature lower than T_S^{c1}, the Hamiltonian exhibits a spin-glass like phase, where the dynamics requires long time steps to produce the fitted phenotype, and the fitness often decreases drastically by single mutation. In contrast, in the intermediate temperature phase between T_S^{c1} and T_S^{c2}, the evolved genotypes, that have no frustration around the target spins (we call "local Mattis state"), give a funnel-like rapid expression dynamics and are robust to mutation. These results imply that evolution under thermal noise beyond a certain level leads to funnel dynamics and mutational robustness. We will explain its mechanism with the statistical-mechanical method.

Testing Error Correcting Codes by Multicanonical Sampling of Rare Events

The idea of rare event sampling is applied to the estimation of the performance of error-correcting codes. The essence of the idea is importance sampling of the pattern of noises in the channel by Multicanonical Monte Carlo, which enables efficient estimation of tails of the distribution of bit error rate. The idea is successfully tested with a convolutional code.

Large Deviation Property of Free Energy in p-Body Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Model

Cumulant generating function phi(n) and rate function Sigma(f) of the free energy is evaluated in p-body Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model by using the replica method with the replica number n finite. From a perturbational argument, we show that the cumulant generating function is constant in the vicinity of n = 0. On the other hand, with the help of two analytic properties of phi(n), the behavior of phi(n) is derived again. However this is also shown to be broken at a finite value of n, which gives a characteristic value in the rate function near the thermodynamic value of the free energy. Through the continuation of phi(n) as a function of n, we find out a way to derive the 1RSB solution at least in this model, which is to fix the RS solution to be a monotone increasing function.

On-line Learning of an Unlearnable True Teacher through Mobile Ensemble Teachers

On-line learning of a hierarchical learning model is studied by a method from statistical mechanics. In our model a student of a simple perceptron learns from not a true teacher directly, but ensemble teachers who learn from the true teacher with a perceptron learning rule. Since the true teacher and the ensemble teachers are expressed as non-monotonic perceptron and simple ones, respectively, the ensemble teachers go around the unlearnable true teacher with the distance between them fixed in an asymptotic steady state. The generalization performance of the student is shown to exceed that of the ensemble teachers in a transient state, as was shown in similar ensemble-teachers models. Further, it is found that moving the ensemble teachers even in the steady state, in contrast to the fixed ensemble teachers, is efficient for the performance of the student.

Distribution of Lee-Yang zeros and Griffiths singularities in the $\pm J$ model of spin glasses

We investigate the distribution of zeros of the partition function of the two- and three-dimensional symmetric $\pm J$ Ising spin glasses on the complex field plane. We use the method to analytically implement the idea of numerical transfer matrix which provides us with the exact expression of the partition function as a polynomial of fugacity. The results show that zeros are distributed in a wide region in the complex field plane. Nevertheless we observe that zeros on the imaginary axis play dominant roles in the critical behaviour since zeros on the imaginary axis are in closer proximity to the real axis. We estimate the density of zeros on the imaginary axis by an importance-sampling Monte Carlo algorithm, which enables us to sample very rare events. Our result suggests that the density has an essential singularity at the origin. This observation is consistent with the existence of Griffiths singularities in the present systems. This is the first evidence for Griffiths singularities in spin glass systems in equilibrium.

A Monte Carlo Algorithm for Sampling Rare Events: Application to a Search for the Griffiths Singularity

We develop a recently proposed importance-sampling Monte Carlo algorithm for sampling rare events and quenched variables in random disordered systems. We apply it to a two dimensional bond-diluted Ising model and study the Griffiths singularity which is considered to be due to the existence of rare large clusters. It is found that the distribution of the inverse susceptibility has an exponential tail down to the origin which is considered the consequence of the Griffiths singularity.

Computational Experiment on Glassy Dynamic Nature of the Field-Cooled Magnetization in an Ising Spin-Glass Model

The field-cooled (FC) process on an Ising spin-glass model is investigated by a standard Monte Calro (MC) method on one hand, and the equilibrium magnetization of the same system is evaluated by the exchang MC method on the other hand. The two types of simulation reveal intriguing glassy (nonequilibrium) dynamic properties of the FC magnetization (FCM) of the system. Particularly, the FCM decrease is observed when the FC process is halted at a low temperater, although its value is smaller than the corresponding equilibrium value. We present a comprehensive interpretation of such peculiar phenomena based on the scenario for the FCM process recently propsed by Jönsson and one of us (HT).

Field-Shift Aging Protocol on the 3D Ising Spin-Glass Model: Dynamical Crossover between the Spin-Glass and Paramagnetic States

Spin-glass (SG) states of the 3-dimensional Ising Edwards-Anderson model under a static magnetic field $h$ are examined by means of the standard Monte Carlo simulation on the field-shift aging protocol at temperature $T$. For each process with $(T; \tw, h)$, $\tw$ being the waiting time before the field is switched on, we extract the dynamical crossover time, $\tcr(T; \tw, h)$. We have found a nice scaling relation between the two characteristic length scales which are properly determined from $\tcr$ and $\tw$ and then are normalized by the static field crossover length introduced in the SG droplet theory. This scaling behavior implies the instability of the SG phase in the equilibrium limit even under an infinitesimal $h$. In comparison with this numerical result the field effect on real spin glasses is also discussed.

Eigenmode analysis of the susceptibility matrix of the four-dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin-glass model

The nature of spin-glass phase of the four-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising model is numerically studied by eigenmode analysis of the susceptibility matrix up to the lattice size 10^4. Unlike the preceding results on smaller lattices, our result suggests that there exist multiple extensive eigenvalues of the matrix, which does not contradict replica-symmetry-breaking scenarios. The sensitivity of the eigenmodes with respect to a temperature change is examined using finite-size-scaling analysis and an evidence of anomalous sensitivity is found. A computational advantage of dual formulation of the eigenmode analysis in the study of large lattices is also discussed.

Numerical Study on Aging Dynamics in the 3D Ising Spin-Glass Model. III. Cumulative Memory and `Chaos' Effects in the Temperature-Shift Protocol

The temperature ($T$)-shift protcol of aging in the 3 dimensional (3D) Edwards- Anderson (EA) spin-glass (SG) model is studied through the out-of-phase component of the ac susceptibility simulated by the Monte Carlo method. For processes with a small magnitude of the $T$-shift, $ΔT$, the memory imprinted before the $T$-shift is preserved under the $T$-change and the SG short-range order continuously grows after the $T$-shift, which we call the cumulative memory scenario. For a negative $T$-shift process with a large $ΔT$ the deviation from the cumulative memory scenario has been observed for the first time in the numerical simulation. We attribute the phenomenon to the `chaos effect' which, we argue, is qualitatively different from the so-called rejuvenation effect observed just after the $T$-shift.

Dynamical Critical Phenomena in three-dimensional Heisenberg Spin Glasses

Spin-glass (SG) and chiral-glass (CG) orderings in three dimensional (3D) Heisenberg spin glass with and without magnetic anisotropy are studied by using large-scale off-equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. A characteristic time of relaxation, which diverges at a transition temperature in the thermodynamic limit, is obtained as a function of the temperature and the system size. Based on the finite-size scaling analysis for the relaxation time, it is found that in the isotropic Heisenberg spin glass, the CG phase transition occurs at a finite temperature, while the SG transition occurs at a lower temperature, which is compatible with zero. Our results of the anisotropic case support the chirality scenario for the phase transitions in the 3D Heisenberg spin glasses.

Anomalously Soft Droplets and Aging in Short-ranged Spin Glasses

We extend the standard droplet scaling theory for isothermal aging in spin glasses assuming that the effective stiffness constant of droplets as large as extended defects is vanishingly small. A novel dynamical order parameter and the associated dynamical susceptibility emerge. Breaking of the fluctuation dissipation theorem takes place at the dynamical order parameter well below the equilibrium Edwards-Anderson order parameter at which the time translational invariance is strongly broken. The scenario is examined numerically in a 4 dimensional EA Ising spin glass model.

Extended droplet theory for aging in short-ranged spin glasses and a numerical examination

We analyze isothermal aging of a four dimensional Edwards-Anderson model in detail by Monte Carlo simulations. We analyze the data in the view of an extended version of the droplet theory proposed recently (cond-mat/0202110) which is based on the original droplet theory plus conjectures on the anomalously soft droplets in the presence of domain walls. We found that the scaling laws including some fundamental predictions of the original droplet theory explain well our results. The results of our simulation strongly suggest the separation of the breaking of the time translational invariance and the fluctuation dissipation theorem in agreement with our scenario.

Aging of the Zero-Field-Cooled Magnetization in Ising Spin Glasses: Experiment and Numerical Simulation

A new protocol of the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization process is studied experimentally on an Ising spin-glass (SG) Fe$_{0.50}$Mn$_{0.50}$TiO$_3$ and numerically on the Edwards-Anderson Ising SG model. Although the time scales differ very much between the experiment and the simulation, the behavior of the ZFC magnetization observed in the two systems can be interpreted by means of a common scaling expression based on the droplet picture. The results strongly suggest that the SG coherence length, or the mean size of droplet excitations, involved even in the experimental ZFC process, is about a hundred lattice distances or less.
