Real adjoint orbits of the unipotent subgroup

Let $G$ be a linear Lie group that acts on it's Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ by the adjoint action: $\mathrm{Ad}(g)X=gXg^{-1}$. An element $X\in \mathfrak {g}$ is called $\mathrm{Ad}_G$-real if $-X = \mathrm{Ad}(g)X $ for some $g\in G$. An $\mathrm{Ad}_G$-real element $X$ is called strongly $\mathrm{Ad}_G $-real if $-X = \mathrm{Ad}(τ) X $ for some involution $τ\in G$. Let $K=\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{H}$. Let $\mathrm{U}_n(K)$ be the group of unipotent upper-triangular matrices over $K$. Let $\mathfrak{u}_n (K)$ be the Lie algebra of $\mathrm{U}_n(K)$ that consists of $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices with $0$ in all the diagonal entries. In this paper, we consider the $\mathrm{Ad}$-reality of the Lie algebra $ \mathfrak{u}_n(K) $ that comes from the adjoint action of the Lie group $\mathrm{U}_n(K)$ on $ \mathfrak{u}_n(K)$. We prove that there is no non-trivial $\mathrm{Ad}_{\mathrm{ U}_n(K)}$-real element in $\mathfrak{u}_n (K)$. We also consider the adjoint action of the extended group $\mathrm{U}_n^\pm(K)$ that consists of all upper triangular matrices over $K$ having diagonal elements as $1$ or $-1$, and construct a large class of $\mathrm{Ad} _{\mathrm{ U}_n^\pm( K)} $-real elements. As applications of these results, we recover related results concerning classical reality in these groups.

Reversibility of Hermitian Isometries

An element $g$ in a group $G$ is called reversible (or real) if it is conjugate to $g^{-1}$ in $G$, i.e., there exists $h$ in $G$ such that $g^{-1}=hgh^{-1}$. The element $g$ is called strongly reversible if the conjugating element $h$ is an involution (i.e., element of order at most two) in $G$. In this paper, we classify reversible and strongly reversible elements in the isometry groups of $\mathbb{F}$-Hermitian spaces, where $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{H}$. More precisely, we classify reversible and strongly reversible elements in the groups $ \mathrm{Sp}(n) \ltimes \mathbb{H}^n$, $\mathrm{U}(n) \ltimes \mathbb{C}^n$ and $\mathrm{SU}(n) \ltimes \mathbb{C}^n$. We also give a new proof of the classification of strongly reversible elements in $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$.

Discreteness Of Hyperbolic Isometries by Test Maps

Let $\mathbb F=\mathbb R$, $\mathbb C$ or $\mathbb H$. Let ${\bf H}_{\mathbb F}^n$ denote the $n$-dimensional $\mathbb F$-hyperbolic space. Let ${\rm U}(n,1; \mathbb F)$ be the linear group that acts by the isometries. A subgroup $G$ of ${\rm U}(n,1; \mathbb F)$ is called \emph{Zariski dense} if it does not fix a point on the closure of the $\mathbb F$-hyperbolic space, and neither it preserves a totally geodesic subspace of it. We prove that a Zariski dense subgroup $G$ of ${\rm U}(n,1; \mathbb F)$ is discrete if for every loxodromic element $g \in G$, the two generator subgroup $\langle f, g \rangle$ is discrete, where $f \in {\rm U}(n,1; \mathbb F)$ is a test map not necessarily from $G$.

Local coordinates for complex and quaternionic hyperbolic pairs

Let $G(n)={\rm Sp}(n,1)$ or ${\rm SU}(n,1)$. We classify conjugation orbits of generic pairs of loxodromic elements in $G(n)$. Such pairs, called `non-singular', were introduced by Gongopadhyay and Parsad for ${\rm SU}(3,1)$. We extend this notion and classify $G(n)$-conjugation orbits of such elements in arbitrary dimension. We prove that the set given by non-singular pairs in $G(n)$ is `small' for $n \geq 4$. However, for $n=3$, they give a subspace that can be parametrized using a set of coordinates whose local dimension equals the dimension of the underlying group. We further construct twist-bend parameters to glue such representations and obtain local parametrization for generic representations of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface into $G(3)$.

On some decompositions of the 3-strand Singular Braid Group

Let $SB_n$ be the singular braid group generated by braid generators $σ_i$ and singular braid generators $τ_i$, $1 \leq i \leq n-1$. Let $ST_n$ denote the group that is the kernel of the homomorphism that maps, for each $i$, $σ_i$ to the cyclic permutation $(i, i+1)$ and $τ_i$ to $1$. In this paper we investigate the group $ST_3$. We obtain a presentation for $ST_3$. We prove that $ST_3$ is isomorphic to the singular pure braid group $SP_3$ on $3$ strands. We also prove that the group $ST_3$ is semi-direct product of a subgroup $H$ and an infinite cyclic group, where the subgroup $H$ is an HNN-extension of ${\mathbb Z}^2 \ast {\mathbb Z}^2$.

Reversible Quaternionic Hyperbolic Isometries

Let $G$ be a group. An element $g$ in $G$ is called reversible if it is conjugate to $g^{-1}$ within $G$, and called strongly reversible if it is conjugate to its inverse by an order two element of $G$. Let $\textbf{H}_{\mathbb H}^n$ be the $n$-dimensional quaternionic hyperbolic space. Let $\mathrm{PSp}(n,1)$ be the isometry group of $\textbf{H}_{\mathbb H}^n$. In this paper, we classify reversible and strongly reversible elements in $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$ and $\mathrm{Sp}(n,1)$. Also, we prove that all the elements of $\mathrm{PSp}(n,1)$ are strongly reversible.

Decomposition of complex hyperbolic isometries by involutions

A $k$-reflection of the $n$-dimensional complex hyperbolic space ${\rm H}_{\C}^n$ is an element in ${\rm U}(n,1)$ with negative type eigenvalue $λ$, $|λ|=1$, of multiplicity $k+1$ and positive type eigenvalue $1$ of multiplicity $n-k$. We prove that a holomorphic isometry of ${\rm H}_{\C}^n$ is a product of at most four involutions and a complex $k$-reflection, $k \leq 2$. Along the way, we prove that every element in ${\rm SU}(n)$ is a product of four or five involutions according as $n \neq 2 \mod 4$ or $n = 2 \mod 4$. We also give an easy proof of the result that every holomorphic isometry of ${\rm H}_{\C}^n$ is a product of two anti-holomorphic involutions.

Palindromic widths of graph of groups

We prove that the palindromic width of HNN extension of a group by proper associated subgroups is infinite. We also prove that the palindromic width of the amalgamated free product of two groups via a proper subgroup is infinite (except when the amalgamated subgroup has index two in each of the factors). Combining these results it follows that the palindromic width of the fundamental group of a graph of groups is mostly infinite.

On discreteness of subgroups of quaternionic hyperbolic isometries

Let ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^n$ denote the $n$-dimensional quaternionic hyperbolic space. The linear group ${\rm{Sp}}(n,1)$ acts by the isometries of ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^n$. A subgroup $G$ of ${\rm {Sp}}(n,1)$ is called \emph{Zariski dense} if it does not fix a point on ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^n \cup \partial {{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^n$ and neither it preserves a totally geodesic subspace of ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^n$. We prove that a Zariski dense subgroup $G$ of ${\rm{ Sp}}(n,1)$ is discrete if for every loxodromic element $g \in G$ the two generator subgroup $\langle f, g f g^{-1} \rangle$ is discrete, where the generator $f \in {\rm{Sp}}(n,1)$ is certain fixed element not necessarily from $G$.

On Conjugation orbits of semisimple pairs in rank one

We consider Lie groups ${\rm SU}(n,1)$ and ${\rm Sp}(n,1)$ that act as the isometries of the complex and quaternionic hyperbolic spaces respectively. We classify pairs of semisimple elements in ${\rm Sp}(n,1)$ and ${\rm SU}(n,1)$ up to conjugacy. This gives local parametrization of the representations $ρ$ in $Hom(F_2, G)/G$ such that both $ρ(x)$ and $ρ(y)$ are hyperbolics, where $F_2=\langle x, y\rangle$, $G={\rm Sp}(n,1)$ or ${\rm SU}(n,1)$. We use the ${\rm PSp}(n,1)$-configuration space $M(n,i,m-i)$ of ordered $m$-tuples of points on $\overline{{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}^n}$, where first $i$ points in an $m$-tuple are null points, to classify the semisimple pairs. Further, we also classify points on $M(n,i,m-i)$.

Commutator Subgroups of Singular Braid Groups

The singular braids with $n$ strands, $n \geq 3$, were introduced independently by Baez and Birman. It is known that the monoid formed by the singular braids is embedded in a group that is known as singular braid group, denoted by $SG_n$. There has been another generalization of braid groups, denoted by $GVB_n$, $n \geq 3$, which was introduced by Fang as a group of symmetries behind quantum quasi-shuffle structures. The group $GVB_n$ simultaneously generalizes the classical braid group, as well as the virtual braid group on $n$ strands. We investigate the commutator subgroups $SG_n'$ and $GVB_n'$ of these generalized braid groups. We prove that $SG_n'$ is finitely generated if and only if $n \ge 5$, and $GVB_n'$ is finitely generated if and only if $n \ge 4$. Further, we show that both $SG_n'$ and $GVB_n'$ are perfect if and only if $n \ge 5$.

On generalized Jørgensen inequality in ${\rm SL}(2, \mathbb C)$

Wang, Jiang and Cao have obtained a generalized version of the Jørgensen inequality in Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. Math. Sci., 123(2):245--251, 2013, for two generator subgroups of ${\rm SL}(2, \mathbb C)$ where one of the generators is loxodromic. We prove that their inequality is strict.

Conjugation Orbits of Loxodromic Pairs in SU(n,1)

Let ${\bf H}_{\mathbb C}^n$ be the $n$-dimensional complex hyperbolic space and ${\rm SU}(n,1)$ be the (holomorphic) isometry group. An element $g$ in ${\rm SU}(n,1)$ is called loxodromic or hyperbolic if it has exactly two fixed points on the boundary $\partial {\bf H}_{\mathbb C}^n$. We classify ${\rm SU}(n,1)$ conjugation orbits of pairs of loxodromic elements in ${\rm SU}(n,1)$.

Test map and Discreteness in SL(2, $\mathbb H$)

Let SL(2, $\mathbb H$) be the group of $2 \times 2$ quaternionic matrices $A=\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}$ with quaternionic determinant $\det A=|ad-aca^{-1} b|=1$. This group acts by the orientation-preserving isometries of the five dimensional (real) hyperbolic space. We obtain discreteness criteria for Zariski-dense subgroups of SL(2, $\mathbb H$) using test maps.

Commutator Subgroups of Twin Groups and Grothendieck's Cartographical Groups

Let $TW_n$ be the twin group on $n$ arcs, $n \geq 2$. The group $TW_{m+2}$ is isomorphic to Grothendieck's $m$-dimensional cartographical group $\mathcal C_m$, $m \geq 1$. In this paper we give a finite presentation for the commutator subgroup $TW_{m+2}'$, and prove that $TW_{m+2}'$ has rank $2m-1$. We derive that $TW_{m+2}'$ is free if and only if $m \leq 3$. From this it follows that $TW_{m+2}$ is word-hyperbolic and does not contain a surface group if and only if $m \leq 3$. It also follows that the automorphism group of $TW_{m+2}$ is finitely presented for $m \leq 3$.

Quaternionic Hyperbolic Fenchel-Nielsen Coordinates

Let $Sp(2,1)$ be the isometry group of the quaternionic hyperbolic plane ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^2$. An element $g$ in $Sp(2,1)$ is `hyperbolic' if it fixes exactly two points on the boundary of ${{\bf H}_{\mathbb H}}^2$. We classify pairs of hyperbolic elements in $Sp(2,1)$ up to conjugation. A hyperbolic element of $Sp(2,1)$ is called `loxodromic' if it has no real eigenvalue. We show that the set of $Sp(2,1)$ conjugation orbits of irreducible loxodromic pairs is a $(\mathbb C {\mathbb P}^1)^4$-bundle over a topological space that is locally a semi-analytic subspace of ${\mathbb R}^{13}$. We use the above classification to show that conjugation orbits of `geometric' representations of a closed surface group (of genus $g \geq 2$) into $Sp(2,1)$ can be determined by a system of $42g-42$ real parameters. Further, we consider the groups $Sp(1,1)$ and $GL(2, {\mathbb H})$. These groups also act by the orientation-preserving isometries of the four and five dimensional real hyperbolic spaces respectively. We classify conjugation orbits of pairs of hyperbolic elements in these groups. These classifications determine conjugation orbits of `geometric' surface group representations into these groups.

Commutator Subgroups of Virtual and Welded Braid Groups

Let $VB_n$, resp. $WB_n$ denote the virtual, resp. welded, braid group on $n$ strands. We study their commutator subgroups $VB_n' = [VB_n, VB_n]$ and, $WB_n' = [WB_n, WB_n]$ respectively. We obtain a set of generators and defining relations for these commutator subgroups. In particular, we prove that $VB_n'$ is finitely generated if and only if $n \geq 4$, and $WB_n'$ is finitely generated for $n \geq 3$. Also we prove that $VB_3'/VB_3'' =\mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus\mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}^{\infty}$, $VB_4' / VB_4'' = \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3$, $WB_3'/WB_3'' = \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus\mathbb{Z}_3 \oplus \mathbb{Z},$ $WB_4'/WB_4'' = \mathbb{Z}_3,$ and for $n \geq 5$ the commutator subgroups $VB_n'$ and $WB_n'$ are perfect, i.e. the commutator subgroup is equal to the second commutator subgroup.
