Conjugate Real Classes in General Linear Groups

Let $\F$ be a field with a non-trivial involution $c: α\to α^c$. An element $g \in {\rm GL}_n(\F)$ is called $c$-real if it is conjugate to $(g^c)^{-1}$. We prove that for $n \geq 2$, $g \in {\rm GL}_n(\F)$ is $c$-real if and only if it has a representation in some unitary group of degree $n$ over $\F$.

Commutator Subgroups of Welded Braid Groups

Let $WB_n$ be the welded (or loop) braid group on n strands, $n \geq 3$. We investigate commutator subgroup of $WB_n$. We prove that the commutator subgroup $WB_n'$ is finitely generated and Hopfian. We show that $WB_n'$ is perfect if and only if $n \geq 5$. We also compute finite presentation for $FWB_n'$, the commutator subgroup of the flat welded braid group $FWB_n$. Along the way, we investigate adorability of these groups.

Existence of an invariant form under a linear map

Let $\F$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and $\V$ be a vector space over $\F$. Let $J: α\to α^J$ be a fixed involutory automorphism on $\F$. In this paper we answer the following question: given an invertible linear map $T: \V \to \V$, when does the vector space $\V$ admit a $T$-invariant non-degenerate $J$-hermitian, resp. $J$-skew-hermitian, form?

On Fenchel-Nielsen Coordinates of Surface Group Representations into SU(3,1)

Let $Σ_g$ be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$. We ask for a parametrization of the discrete, faithful, totally loxodromic representations in the deformation space ${\rm Hom}(π_1(Σ_g), {\rm SU}(3,1))/{\rm SU}(3,1)$. We show that such a representation, under some hypothesis, can be determined by $30g-30$ real parameters.

Invariants of pairs in SL(4,C) and SU(3,1)

We describe a minimal global coordinate system of order 30 on the SL(4,C)-character variety of a rank 2 free group. Using symmetry within this system, we obtain a smaller collection of 22 coordinates subject to 5 further real relations that determine conjugation classes of generic pairs of matrices in SU(3,1).

z-Classes in finite groups of conjugate type (n,1)

Two elements in a group $G$ are said to $z$-equivalent or to be in the same $z$-class if their centralizers are conjugate in $G$. In \cite{kkj}, it was proved that a non-abelian $p$-group $G$ can have at most $\frac{p^k-1}{p-1} +1$ number of $z$-classes, where $|G/Z(G)|=p^k$. In this note, we characterize the $p$-groups of conjugate type $(n,1)$ attaining this maximal number. As a corollary, we characterize $p$-groups having prime order commutator subgroup and maximal number of $z$-classes.

Extremality of Quaternionic Jørgensen Inequality

Let ${\rm SL(2, \mathbb H)}$ be the group of $2 \times 2$ quaternionic matrices with Dieudonné determinant $1$. The group ${\rm SL(2, \mathbb H)}$ acts on the five dimensional hyperbolic space by isometries. We investigate extremality of Jørgensen type inequalities in ${\rm SL(2, \mathbb H)}$. Along the way, we derive Jørgensen type inequalities for quaternionic Möbius transformations which extend earlier inequalities obtained by Waterman and Kellerhals.

Palindromic Automorphisms of Free Nilpotent Groups

In this paper, we initiate the study of palindromic automorphisms of groups that are free in some variety. More specifically, we define palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups and show that the set of such automorphisms is a group. We find a generating set for the group of palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 2 and 3. In particular, we obtain a generating set for the group of central palindromic automorphisms of these groups. In the end, we determine central palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 3 which satisfy the necessary condition of Bryant-Gupta-Levin-Mochizuki for a central automorphism to be tame.

Palindromic Automorphisms of Free Groups

Let $F_n$ be the free group of rank $n$ with free basis $X=\{x_1,\dots,x_n \}$. A palindrome is a word in $X^{\pm 1}$ that reads the same backwards as forwards. The palindromic automorphism group $ΠA_n$ of $F_n$ consists of those automorphisms that map each $x_i$ to a palindrome. In this paper, we investigate linear representations of $ΠA_n$, and prove that $ΠA_2$ is linear. We obtain conjugacy classes of involutions in $ΠA_2$, and investigate residual nilpotency of $ΠA_n$ and some of its subgroups. Let $IA_n$ be the group of those automorphisms of $F_n$ that act trivially on the abelianisation, $P I_n$ be the palindromic Torelli group of $F_n$, and $E ΠA_n$ be the elementary palindromic automorphism group of $F_n$. We prove that $PI_n=IA_n \cap E ΠA_n'$. This result strengthens a recent result of Fullarton.

On Palindromic Widths of Nilpotent and Wreathe Products

We prove that the nilpotent product of a set of groups $A_{1},\dots, A_{s}$ has finite palindromic width if and only if the palindromic widths of $A_{i}, i=1,\dots, s,$ are finite. We give a new proof that the commutator width of $F_n \wr K$ is infinite, where $F_n$ is a free group of rank $n \geq 2$ and $K$ a finite group. This result, combining with a result of Fink \cite{f1} gives examples of groups with infinite commutator width but finite palindromic width with respect to some generating set.

Some Problems on Knots, Braids, and Automorphism Groups

We present and discuss some open problems formulated by participants of the International Workshop "Knots, Braids, and Auto\-mor\-phism Groups" held in Novosibirsk, 2014. Problems are related to palindromic and commutator widths of groups; properties of Brunnian braids and two-colored braids, corresponding to an amalgamation of groups; extreme properties of hyperbolic 3-orbifold groups, relations between inner and quasi-inner automorphisms of groups; and Staic's construction of symmetric cohomology of groups.

On palindromic width of certain extensions and quotients of free nilpotent groups

In arXiv:1303.1129, the authors provided a bound for the palindromic width of free abelian-by-nilpotent group $AN_n$ of rank $n$ and free nilpotent group ${\rm N}_{n,r}$ of rank $n$ and step $r$. In the present paper we study palindromic widths of groups $\widetilde{AN}_n$ and $\widetilde{\rm N}_{n,r}$. We denote by $\widetilde{G}_n = G_n / \langle \langle x_1^2, \ldots, x_n^2 \rangle \rangle$ the quotient of group $G_n = \langle x_1, \ldots, x_n \rangle$, which is free in some variety by the normal subgroup generated by $x_1^2, \ldots, x_n^2$. We prove that the palindromic width of the quotient $\widetilde{AN}_n$ is finite and bounded by $3n$. We also prove that the palindromic width of the quotient $\widetilde{\rm N}_{n, 2}$ is precisely $2(n-1)$. We improve the lower bound of the palindromic width for ${\rm N}_{n, r}$. We prove that the palindromic width of ${\rm N}_{n, r}$, $r\geq 2$ is at least $2(n-1)$. We also improve the bound for palindromic widths of free metabelian groups. We prove that the palindromic width of free metabelian group of rank $n$ is at most $4n-1$.

Palindromic Width of Finitely Generated Solvable Groups

We investigate the palindromic width of finitely generated solvable groups. We prove that every finitely generated $3$-step solvable group has finite palindromic width. More generally, we show the finiteness of palindromic width for finitely generated abelian-by-nilpotent-by-nilpotent groups. For arbitrary solvable groups of step $\geq 3$, we prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated solvable group that is an extension of an abelian group by a group satisfying the maximal condition for normal subgroups, then the palindromic width of $G$ is finite. We also prove that the palindromic width of $\mathbb Z \wr \mathbb Z$ with respect to the set of standard generators is $3$.

Palindromic width of free nilpotent groups

In this paper we consider the palindromic width of free nilpotent groups. In particular, we prove that the palindromic width of a finitely generated free nilpotent group is finite. We also prove that the palindromic width of a free abelian-by-nilpotent group is finite.

The z-Classes of Isometries

Let G be a group. Two elements x,y are said to be in the same z-class if their centralizers are conjugate in G. Let V be a vector space of dimension n over a field F of characteristic different from 2. Let B be a non-degenerate symmetric, or skew-symmetric, bilinear form on V. Let I(V, B) denote the group of isometries of (V, B). We show that the number of z-classes in I(V, B) is finite when F is perfect and has the property that it has only finitely many field extensions of degree at most n.

Algebraic Characterization of Isometries of the Complex and Quaternionic Hyperbolic Planes

It is of interest to characterize algebraically the dynamical types of isometries of the complex and quaternionic hyperbolic planes. In the complex case, such a characterization is known from the work of Giraud-Goldman. In this paper, we offer an algebraic characterization of the isometries of the two-dimensional quaternionic hyperbolic space. Our result restricts to the complex case and provides another characterization of the isometries of the complex hyperbolic plane which is different from the characterization due to Giraud-Goldman. Two elements in a group G are said to be in the same z-class if their centralizers are conjugate in G. The $z$-classes provide a finite partition of the isometry group. In this paper we describe the centralizers of the isometries, and determine the z-classes.

Commuting Isometries of the Complex Hyperbolic Space

Let $H^n$ denote the complex hyperbolic space of dimension $n$. The group $U(n,1)$ acts as the group of isometries of $H^n$. In this paper we investigate when two isometries of the complex hyperbolic space commute. Along the way we determine the centralizers.
