Fluctuation Relations for Diffusion Processes

The paper presents a unified approach to different fluctuation relations for classical nonequilibrium dynamics described by diffusion processes. Such relations compare the statistics of fluctuations of the entropy production or work in the original process to the similar statistics in the time-reversed process. The origin of a variety of fluctuation relations is traced to the use of different time reversals. It is also shown how the application of the presented approach to the tangent process describing the joint evolution of infinitesimally close trajectories of the original process leads to a multiplicative extension of the fluctuation relations.

WZW orientifolds and finite group cohomology

The simplest orientifolds of the WZW models are obtained by gauging a Z_2 symmetry group generated by a combined involution of the target Lie group G and of the worldsheet. The action of the involution on the target is by a twisted inversion g \mapsto (ζg)^{-1}, where ζis an element of the center of G. It reverses the sign of the Kalb-Ramond torsion field H given by a bi-invariant closed 3-form on G. The action on the worldsheet reverses its orientation. An unambiguous definition of Feynman amplitudes of the orientifold theory requires a choice of a gerbe with curvature H on the target group G, together with a so-called Jandl structure introduced in hep-th/0512283. More generally, one may gauge orientifold symmetry groups Γ= Z_2 \ltimes Z that combine the Z_2-action described above with the target symmetry induced by a subgroup Z of the center of G. To define the orientifold theory in such a situation, one needs a gerbe on G with a Z-equivariant Jandl structure. We reduce the study of the existence of such structures and of their inequivalent choices to a problem in group-Γcohomology that we solve for all simple simply-connected compact Lie groups G and all orientifold groups Γ= Z_2 \ltimes Z.

Kraichnan flow in a square: an example of integrable chaos

The Kraichnan flow provides an example of a random dynamical system accessible to an exact analysis. We study the evolution of the infinitesimal separation between two Lagrangian trajectories of the flow. Its long-time asymptotics is reflected in the multiplicative large deviation regime of the statistics of stretching exponents. In the flow in a two-dimensional periodic square where the anisotropy persists at small scales, the calculation of the large deviation rate function of the stretching exponents reduces to the study of the ground state energy of an integrable periodic Schroedinger operator of the Lame type. The underlying integrability permits to explicitly exhibit the non-Gaussianity of the multiplicative large deviations, to analyze the time-scales at which the large deviation regime sets in and to identify the general scenario for the appearance of multiplicative large deviations and the restrictions on its applicability.

Abelian and non-Abelian branes in WZW models and gerbes

We discuss how gerbes may be used to set up a consistent Lagrangian approach to the WZW models with boundary. The approach permits to study in detail possible boundary conditions that restrict the values of the fields on the worldsheet boundary to brane submanifolds in the target group. Such submanifolds are equipped with an additional geometric structure that is summarized in the notion of a gerbe module and includes a twisted Chan-Paton gauge field. Using the geometric approach, we present a complete classification of the branes that conserve the diagonal current-algebra symmetry in the WZW models with simple, compact but not necessarily simply connected target groups. Such symmetric branes are supported by a discrete series of conjugacy classes in the target group and may carry Abelian or non-Abelian twisted gauge fields. The latter situation occurs for the conjugacy classes with fundamental group Z_2\times Z_2 in SO(4n)/Z_2. The branes supported by such conjugacy classes have to be equipped with a projectively flat twisted U(2) gauge field in one of the two possible WZW models differing by discrete torsion. We show how the geometric description of branes leads to explicit formulae for the boundary partition functions and boundary operator product coefficients in the WZW models with non-simply connected target groups.

Intermittent distribution of tracers advected by a compressible random flow

Multifractal properties of a tracer density passively advected by a compressible random velocity field are characterized. A relationship is established between the statistical properties of mass on the dynamical fractal attractor towards which the trajectories converge and large deviations of the stretching rates of the flow. In the framework of the compressible Kraichnan model, this result is illustrated by analytical calculations and confirmed by numerical simulations.

Sticky behavior of fluid particles in the compressible Kraichnan model

We consider the compressible Kraichnan model of turbulent advection with small molecular diffusivity and velocity field regularized at short scales to mimic the effects of viscosity. As noted in ref.[5], removing those two regularizations in two opposite orders for intermediate values of compressibility gives Lagrangian flows with quite different properties. Removing the viscous regularization before diffusivity leads to the explosive separation of trajectories of fluid particles whereas turning the regularizations off in the opposite order results in coalescence of Lagrangian trajectories. In the present paper we re-examine the situation first addressed in ref.[6] in which the Prandtl number is varied when the regularizations are removed. We show that an appropriate fine-tuning leads to a sticky behavior of trajectories which hit each other on and off spending a positive amount of time together. We examine the effect of such a trajectory behavior on the passive transport showing that it induces anomalous scaling of the stationary 2-point structure function of an advected tracer and influences the rate of condensation of tracer energy in the zero wavenumber mode.

Basic gerbe over non simply connected compact groups

We present an explicit construction of the basic bundle gerbes with connection over all connected compact simple Lie groups. These are geometric objects that appear naturally in the Lagrangian approach to the WZW conformal field theories. Our work extends the recent construction of E. Meinrenken \cite{Meinr} restricted to the case of simply connected groups.

Lagrangian dispersion in Gaussian self-similar ensembles

We analyze the Lagrangian flow in a family of simple Gaussian scale-invariant velocity ensembles that exhibit both spatial roughness and temporal correlations. We show that the behavior of the Lagrangian dispersion of pairs of fluid particles in such models is determined by the scale dependence of the ratio between the correlation time of velocity differences and the eddy turnover time. For a non-trivial scale dependence, the asymptotic regimes of the dispersion at small and large scales are described by the models with either rapidly decorrelating or frozen velocities. In contrast to the decorrelated case, known as the Kraichnan model and exhibiting Lagrangian flows with deterministic or stochastic trajectories, fast separating or trapped together, the frozen model is poorly understood. We examine the pair dispersion behavior in its simplest, one-dimensional version, reinforcing analytic arguments by numerical analysis. The collected information about the pair dispersion statistics in the limiting models allows to partially predict the extent of different phases and the scaling properties of the Lagrangian flow in the model with time-correlated velocities.

WZW branes and gerbes

We reconsider the role that bundle gerbes play in the formulation of the WZW model on closed and open surfaces. In particular, we show how an analysis of bundle gerbes on groups covered by SU(N) permits to determine the spectrum of symmetric branes in the boundary version of the WZW model with such groups as the target. We also describe a simple relation between the open string amplitudes in the WZW models based on simply connected groups and in their simple-current orbifolds.

Boundary G/G theory and topological Poisson-Lie sigma model

We study a boundary version of the gauged WZW model with a Poisson-Lie group G as the target. The Poisson-Lie structure of G is used to define the Wess-Zumino term of the action on surfaces with boundary. We clarify the relation of the model to the topological Poisson sigma model with the dual Poisson-Lie group G^* as the target and show that the phase space of the theory on a strip is essentially the Heisenberg double of G introduced by Semenov-Tian-Shansky

Boundary WZW, G/H, G/G and CS theories

We extend the analysis of the canonical structure of the Wess-Zumino-Witten theory to the bulk and boundary coset G/H models. The phase spaces of the coset theories in the closed and in the open geometry appear to coincide with those of a double Chern-Simons theory on two different 3-manifolds. In particular, we obtain an explicit description of the canonical structure of the boundary G/G coset theory. The latter may be easily quantized leading to an example of a two-dimensional topological boundary field theory.

Canonical quantization of the boundary Wess-Zumino-Witten model

We present an analysis of the canonical structure of the WZW theory with untwisted conformal boundary conditions. The phase space of the boundary theory on a strip is shown to coincide with the phase space of the Chern-Simons theory on a solid cylinder (a disc times a line) with two Wilson lines. This reveals a new aspect of the relation between two-dimensional boundary conformal field theories and three-dimensional topological theories. A decomposition of the Chern-Simons phase space on a punctured disc in terms of the one on a punctured sphere and of coadjoint orbits of the loop group easily lends itself to quantization, providing at the same time a quantization of the boundary WZW model.

Conformal field theory: a case study

This is a set of introductory lecture notes devoted to the Wess-Zumino-Witten model of two-dimensional conformal field theory. We review the construction of the exact solution of the model from the functional integral point of view. The boundary version of the theory is also briefly discussed.

Phase Transition in the Passive Scalar Advection

The paper studies the behavior of the trajectories of fluid particles in a compressible generalization of the Kraichnan ensemble of turbulent velocities. We show that, depending on the degree of compressibility, the trajectories either explosively separate or implosively collapse. The two behaviors are shown to result in drastically different statistical properties of scalar quantities passively advected by the flow. At weak compressibility, the explosive separation of trajectories induces a familiar direct cascade of the energy of a scalar tracer with a short-distance intermittency and dissipative anomaly. At strong compressibility, the implosive collapse of trajectories leads to an inverse cascade of the tracer energy with suppressed intermittency and with the energy evacuated by large scale friction. A scalar density whose advection preserves mass exhibits in the two regimes opposite cascades of the total mass squared. We expect that the explosive separation and collapse of Lagrangian trajectories occur also in more realistic high Reynolds number velocity ensembles and that the two phenomena play a crucial role in fully developed turbulence.

Scaling and Exotic Regimes in Decaying Burgers Turbulence

We analyze the stochastic scaling laws arising in the invicid limit of the decaying solutions of the Burgers equation. The linear scaling of the velocity structure functions is shown to reflect the domination by shocks of the long-time asymptotics. We exhibit new self-similar statistics of solutions describing phases with diluted shocks. Some speculations are included on the nature of systems whose large time behavior is described by the new statistics.
