Hitchin Systems at Low Genera

The paper gives a quick account of the simplest cases of the Hitchin integrable systems and of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection at genus 0, 1 and 2. In particular, we construct the action-angle variables of the genus 2 Hitchin system with group SL(2) by exploiting its relation to the classical Neumann integrable systems.

Self-duality of the SL_2 Hitchin integrable system at genus two

We revisit the Hitchin integrable system whose phase space is the bundle cotangent to the moduli space $N$ of holomorphic $SL_2$-bundles over a smooth complex curve of genus two. $N$ may be identified with the 3-dimensional projective space of theta functions of the second order, We prove that the Hitchin system on $T^*N$ possesses a remarkable symmetry: it is invariant under the interchange of positions and momenta. This property allows to complete the work of van Geemen-Previato which, basing on the classical results on geometry of the Kummer quartic surfaces, specified the explicit form of the Hamiltonians of the Hitchin system. The resulting integrable system resembles the classic Neumann systems which are also self-dual. Its quantization produces a commuting family of differential operators of the second order acting on homogeneous polynomials in four complex variables. As recently shown by van Geemen-de Jong, these operators realize the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard-Hitchin connection for group SU(2) and genus 2 curves.

Scaling Laws in Turbulence

The largely open problem of scaling laws in fully developed turbulence is discussed, with the stress put on similarities and differences with scaling in field theory. A soluble model of the passive advection is examined in more detail in order to illustrate the principal ideas.

Slow modes in passive advection

The anomalous scaling in the Kraichnan model of advection of the passive scalar by a random velocity field with non-smooth spatial behavior is traced down to the presence of slow resonance-type collective modes of the stochastic evolution of fluid trajectories. We show that the slow modes are organized into infinite multiplets of descendants of the primary conserved modes. Their presence is linked to the non-deterministic behavior of the Lagrangian trajectories at high Reynolds numbers caused by the sensitive dependence on initial conditions within the viscous range where the velocity fields are more regular. Revisiting the Kraichnan model with smooth velocities we describe the explicit solution for the stationary state of the scalar. The properties of the probability distribution function of the smeared scalar in this state are related to a quantum mechanical problem involving the Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian with a potential.

Unitarity of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection and the Bethe Ansatz for the elliptic Hitchin systems

We work out finite-dimensional integral formulae for the scalar product of genus one states of the group $G$ Chern-Simons theory with insertions of Wilson lines. Assuming convergence of the integrals, we show that unitarity of the elliptic Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection with respect to the scalar product of CS states is closely related to the Bethe Ansatz for the commuting Hamiltonians building up the connection and quantizing the quadratic Hamiltonians of the elliptic Hitchin system.

Anomalous Scaling in the N-Point Functions of Passive Scalar

A recent analysis of the 4-point correlation function of the passive scalar advected by a time-decorrelated random flow is extended to the N-point case. It is shown that all stationary-state inertial-range correlations are dominated by homogeneous zero modes of singular operators describing their evolution. We compute analytically the zero modes governing the N-point structure functions and the anomalous dimensions corresponding to them to the linear order in the scaling exponent of the 2-point function of the advecting velocity field. The implications of these calculations for the dissipation correlations are discussed.

ANOMALOUS SCALING OF THE PASSIVE SCALAR

We establish anomalous inertial range scaling of structure functions for a model of advection of a passive scalar by a random velocity field. The velocity statistics is taken gaussian with decorrelation in time and velocity differences scaling as $|x|^{κ/2}$ in space, with $0\leqκ< 2$. The scalar is driven by a gaussian forcing acting on spatial scale $L$ and decorrelated in time. The structure functions for the scalar are well defined as the diffusivity is taken to zero and acquire anomalous scaling behavior for large pumping scales $L$. The anomalous exponent is calculated explicitly for the $4^{\m\rm th}$ structure function and for small $κ$ and it differs from previous predictions. For all but the second structure functions the anomalous exponents are nonvanishing.

Universality in Turbulence: an Exactly Soluble Model

The present note contains the text of lectures discussing the problem of universality in fully developed turbulence. After a brief description of Kolmogorov's 1941 scaling theory of turbulence and a comparison between the statistical approach to turbulence and field theory, we discuss a simple model of turbulent advection which is exactly soluble but whose exact solution is still difficult to analyze. The model exhibits a restricted universality. Its correlation functions contain terms with universal but anomalous scaling but with non-universal amplitudes typically diverging with the growing size of the system. Strict universality applies only after such terms have been removed leaving renormalized correlators with normal scaling. We expect that the necessity of such an infrared renormalization is a characteristic feature of universality in turbulence.

Elliptic Wess-Zumino-Witten Model from Elliptic Chern-Simons Theory

This letter continues the program aimed at analysis of the scalar product of states in the Chern-Simons theory. It treats the elliptic case with group SU(2). The formal scalar product is expressed as a multiple finite dimensional integral which, if convergent for every state, provides the space of states with a Hilbert space structure. The convergence is checked for states with a single Wilson line where the integral expressions encode the Bethe-Ansatz solutions of the Lame equation. In relation to the Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory, the scalar product renders unitary the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection and gives a pairing between conformal blocks used to obtain the genus one correlation functions.

SU(2) WZW Theory at Higher Genera

We compute, by free field techniques, the scalar product of the SU(2) Chern-Simons states on genus > 1 surfaces. The result is a finite-dimensional integral over positions of ``screening charges'' and one complex modular parameter. It uses an effective description of the CS states closely related to the one worked out by Bertram. The scalar product formula allows to express the higher genus partition functions of the WZW conformal field theory by finite-dimensional integrals. It should provide the hermitian metric preserved by the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection describing the variations of the CS states under the change of the complex structure of the surface.

SU(2) WZNW Model at Higher Genera from Gauge Field Functional Integral

We compute the gauge field functional integral giving the scalar product of the SU(2) Chern-Simons theory states on a Riemann surface of genus > 1. The result allows to express the higher genera partition functions of the SU(2) WZNW conformal field theory by explicit finite dimensional integrals. Our calculation may also shed new light on the functional integral of the Liouville theory.

Conformal Field Theory and Geometry of Strings

What is quantum geometry? This question is becoming a popular leitmotiv in theoretical physics and in mathematics. Conformal field theory may catch a glimpse of the right answer. We review global aspects of the geometry of conformal fields, such as duality and mirror symmetry, and interpret them within Connes' non-commutative geometry. Chern-Simons States at Genus One

We present a rigorous analysis of the Schrödinger picture quantization for the $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons theory on 3-manifold torus$\times$line, with insertions of Wilson lines. The quantum states, defined as gauge covariant holomorphic functionals of smooth $su(2)$-connections on the torus, are expressed by degree $2k$ theta-functions satisfying additional conditions. The conditions are obtained by splitting the space of semistable $su(2)$-connections into nine submanifolds and by analyzing the behavior of states at four codimension $1$ strata. We construct the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard connection allowing to compare the states for different complex structures of the torus and different positions of the Wilson lines. By letting two Wilson lines come together, we prove a recursion relation for the dimensions of the spaces of states which, together with the (unproven) absence of states for spins$\s>{_1\over^2}$level implies the Verlinde dimension formula.

Lattice Wess-Zumino-Witten Model and Quantum Groups

Quantum groups play a role of symmetries of integrable theories in two dimensions. They may be detected on the classical level as Poisson-Lie symmetries of the corresponding phase spaces. We discuss specifically the Wess-Zumino-Witten conformally invariant quantum field model combining two chiral parts which describe the left- and right-moving degrees of freedom. On one hand side, the quantum group plays the role of the symmetry of the chiral components of the theory. On the other hand, the model admits a lattice regularization (in the Minkowski space) in which the current algebra symmetry of the theory also becomes quantum, providing the simplest example of a quantum group symmetry coupling space-time and internal degrees of freedom. We develop a free field approach to the representation theory of the lattice $sl(2)$-based current algebra and show how to use it to rigorously construct an exact solution of the quantum $SL(2)$ WZW model on lattice.

Non-Compact WZW Conformal Field Theories

We discuss non-compact WZW sigma models, especially the ones with symmetric space $H^{\bf C}/H$ as the target, for $H$ a compact Lie group. They offer examples of non-rational conformal field theories. We remind their relation to the compact WZW models but stress their distinctive features like the continuous spectrum of conformal weights, diverging partition functions and the presence of two types of operators analogous to the local and non-local insertions recently discussed in the Liouville theory. Gauging non-compact abelian subgroups of $H^{\bf C}$ leads to non-rational coset theories. In particular, gauging one-parameter boosts in the $SL(2,\bC)/SU(2)$ model gives an alternative, explicitly stable construction of a conformal sigma model with the euclidean 2D black hole target. We compute the (regularized) toroidal partition function and discuss the spectrum of the theory. A comparison is made with more standard approach based on the $U(1)$ coset of the $SU(1,1)$ WZW theory where stability is not evident but where unitarity becomes more transparent.

On quantum group symmetries of conformal field theories

The appearance of quantum groups in conformal field theories is traced back to the Poisson-Lie symmetries of the classical chiral theory. A geometric quantization of the classical theory deforms the Poisson-Lie symmetries to the quantum group ones. This elucidates the fundamental role of chiral symmetries that quantum groups play in conformal models. As a byproduct, one obtains a more geometric approach to the representation theory of quantum groups.
