Anderson localization of solitons

At low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with attractive interaction forms a bright soliton. When exposed to a weak and smooth external potential, the shape of the soliton is hardly modified, but its center-of-mass motion is affected. We show that in a spatially correlated disordered potential, the quantum motion of a bright soliton displays Anderson localization. The localization length can be much larger than the soliton size and could be observed experimentally.

Disorder-Induced Phase Control in Superfluid Fermi-Bose Mixtures

We consider a mixture of a superfluid Fermi gas of ultracold atoms and a Bose-Einstein condensate of molecules possessing a continuous U(1) (relative phase) symmetry. We study the effects that a spatially random photo-associative-dissociative symmetry breaking coupling of the systems. Such coupling allows to control the relative phase between a superfluid order parameter of the Fermi system and the condensate wavefunction of molecules for temperatures below the BCS critical temperature. The presented mechanism of phase control belongs to the general class of disorder-induced order phenomena that rely on breaking of continuous symmetry.

Quantum model for double ionization of atoms in strong laser fields

We discuss double ionization of atoms in strong laser pulses using a reduced dimensionality model. Following the insights obtained from an analysis of the classical mechanics of the process, we confine each electron to move along the lines that point towards the two-particle Stark saddle in the presence of a field. The resulting effective two dimensional model is similar to the aligned electron model, but it enables correlated escape of electrons with equal momenta, as observed experimentally. The time-dependent solution of the Schrödinger equation allows us to discuss in detail the time dynamics of the ionization process, the formation of electronic wave packets and the development of the momentum distribution of the outgoing electrons. In particular, we are able to identify the rescattering process, simultaneous direct double ionization during the same field cycle, as well as other double ionization processes. We also use the model to study the phase dependence of the ionization process.

N-conserving Bogoliubov vacuum of a two component Bose-Einstein condensate: Density fluctuations close to a phase separation condition

Two-component Bose-Einstein condensates are considered within a number conserving version of the Bogoliubov theory. We show that the Bogoliubov vacuum state can be obtained in the particle representation in a simple form. We predict considerable density fluctuations in finite systems close to the phase-separation regime. We analyze homogeneous condensates and condensates in a double-well potential.

Disorder-Induced Order in Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

We propose and analyze a general mechanism of disorder-induced order in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, analogous to corresponding effects established for XY spin models. We show that a random Raman coupling induces a relative phase of pi/2 between two BECs and that the effect is robust. We demonstrate it in 1D, 2D and 3D at T=0 and present evidence that it persists at small T>0. Applications to phase control in ultracold spinor condensates are discussed.

Suppression of correlated electron escape in double ionization in strong laser fields

The effect of the Pauli exclusion principle on double ionization of He atoms by strong, linearly polarized laser pulses is analyzed. We show that correlated electron escape, with electron momenta symmetric with respect to the field polarization axis, is suppressed if atoms are initially prepared in the metastable state 3S. The effect is a consequence of selection rules for the transition to the appropriate outgoing two-electron states. We illustrate the suppression in numerical calculations of electron and ion momentum distributions within a reduced dimensionality model.

Time resolved quantum dynamics of double ionization in strong laser fields

Quantum calculations of a 1+1-dimensional model for double ionization in strong laser fields are used to trace the time evolution from the ground state through ionization and rescattering to the two electron escape. The subspace of symmetric escape, a prime characteristic of nonsequential double ionization, remains accessible by a judicious choice of 1-d coordinates for the electrons. The time resolved ionization fluxes show the onset of single and double ionization, the sequence of events during the pulse, and the influences of pulse duration, and reveal the relative importance of sequential and non-sequential double ionization, even when ionization takes place during the same field cycle.

Classical threshold behaviour in a 1+1-dimensional model for double ionization in strong fields

Building on insights about the classical pathways to double ionization in strong laser fields we here propose a 1+1-dimensional model that captures essentials of the 3-d potential landscape and allows efficient studies of the process in reduced dimensions. The reduction to one degree of freedom for each electron is obtained by confining their motion to lines at an angle of pi/6 with respect to the field axis; the justification for this choice is that upon variation of the electric field the Stark saddles move along the same lines. In this way we obtain a low-dimensional representation in which symmetric electron escape is possible. As a demonstration of the advantages of this model we confirm numerically the equivalent of the Wannier threshold behaviour for constant electric field and identify several classes of trajectories that can contribute to the ionization process.

Self-localized impurities embedded in a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate and their quantum fluctuations

We consider the self-localization of neutral impurity atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a 1D model. Within the strong coupling approach, we show that the self-localized state exhibits parametric soliton behavior. The corresponding stationary states are analogous to the solitons of non-linear optics and to the solitonic solutions of the Schroedinger-Newton equation (which appears in models that consider the connection between quantum mechanics and gravitation). In addition, we present a Bogoliubov-de-Gennes formalism to describe the quantum fluctuations around the product state of the strong coupling description. Our fluctuation calculations yield the excitation spectrum and reveal considerable corrections to the strong coupling description. The knowledge of the spectrum allows a spectroscopic detection of the impurity self-localization phenomenon.

Images of a Bose-Einstein condensate in position and momentum space

In the Bogoliubov theory a condensate initially prepared in its ground state described by stationary Bogoliubov vacuum and later perturbed by a time-dependent potential or interaction strength evolves into a time-dependent excited state which is dynamical Bogoliubov vacuum. The dynamical vacuum has a simple diagonal form in a time-dependent orthonormal basis of single particle modes. This diagonal representation leads to a gaussian probability distribution for possible outcomes of density measurements in position and momentum space. In these notes we also discuss relations with the U(1) symmetry breaking version of the Bogoliubov theory and give two equivalent gaussian integral representations of the dynamical vacuum state.

N-particle Bogoliubov vacuum state

We consider the Bogoliubov vacuum state in the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory proposed by Castin and Dum [Phys. Rev. A 57, 3008 (1998)]. We show that in the particle representation the vacuum can be written in a simple diagonal form. The vacuum state can describe the stationary N-particle ground state of a condensate in a trap, but it can also represent a dynamical state when, for example, a Bose-Einstein condensate initially prepared in the stationary ground state is subject to a time-dependent perturbation. In both cases the diagonal form of the Bogoliubov vacuum can be obtained by basically diagonalizing the reduced single particle density matrix of the vacuum. We compare N-body states obtained within the Bogoliubov theory with the exact ground states in a 3-site Bose-Hubbard model. In this example, the Bogoliubov theory fails to accurately describe the stationary ground state in the limit when N goes to infinity but a small fraction of depleted particles is kept constant.

Images of a Bose-Einstein condensate: diagonal dynamical Bogoliubov vacuum

Evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a time-dependent external perturbation can be described by a time-dependent Bogoliubov theory: a condensate initially in its ground state Bogoliubov vacuum evolves into a time-dependent excited state which can be formally written as a time-dependent Bogoliubov vacuum annihilated by time-dependent quasiparticle annihilation operators. We prove that any Bogoliubov vacuum can be brought to a diagonal form in a time-dependent orthonormal basis. This diagonal form is tailored for simulations of quantum measurements on an excited condensate. As an example we work out phase imprinting of a dark soliton followed by a density measurement.

Non-sequential double ionization of molecules in a strong laser field

We consider the final stage of double ionization of $\rm O_2$ molecules by short linearly polarized laser pulses. The saddles of the effective adiabatic potential energy close to which simultaneous escape of electrons from a molecule takes place are identified. The analysis of the saddles and numerical simulations of the ionization indicate that to observe clear signatures of simultaneous electron escape in double ionization of $\rm O_2$ molecules stronger and much shorter laser pulses than those used in the recent experiment [E. Eremina, {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 173001 (2004)] should be applied.

Soliton in BCS superfluid Fermi gas

We analyze a superfluid state of two species gas of fermions trapped in a quasi-1D harmonic potential and interacting via attractive s-wave collisions. It is shown that the gap equation posesses a self consistent solution with an antisymmetric gap function. The gap function has a localized soliton or kink in the center of the trap.

Non-sequential double ionization of molecules

Double ionization of diatomic molecules by short linearly polarized laser pulses is analyzed. We consider the final stage of the ionization process, that is the decay of a highly excited two electron molecule, which is formed after re-scattering. The saddles of the effective adiabatic potential energy close to which simultaneous escape of electrons takes place are identified. Numerical simulations of the ionization of molecules show that the process can be dominated by either sequential or non-sequential events. In order to increase the ratio of non-sequential to sequential ionizations very short laser pulses should be applied.

Pathways to non-sequential multiple ionization in strong laser fields

The outgoing electrons in non-sequential multiple ionization in intense laser fields are strongly correlated. The correlations can be explained within a classical model for interacting electrons in the presence of the external field. Here we extend the previous analysis for two and three electrons to cases with up to eight electrons and identify the saddle configurations that guard the channels for non-sequential multiple ionization. For four and fewer electrons the electrons in the dominant configuration are equivalent, for six and more electrons this is no longer the case. The case of five electrons is marginal, with two almost degenerate transition configurations. The total number of configurations increases rapidly, from 2 configurations for three electrons up to 26 configurations for eight electrons.

Images of the Dark Soliton in a Depleted Condensate

The dark soliton created in a Bose-Einstein condensate becomes grey in course of time evolution because its notch fills up with depleted atoms. This is the result of quantum mechanical calculations which describes output of many experimental repetitions of creation of the stationary soliton, and its time evolution terminated by a destructive density measurement. However, such a description is not suitable to predict the outcome of a single realization of the experiment were two extreme scenarios and many combinations thereof are possible: one will see (1) a displaced dark soliton without any atoms in the notch, but with a randomly displaced position, or (2) a grey soliton with a fixed position, but a random number of atoms filling its notch. In either case the average over many realizations will reproduce the mentioned quantum mechanical result. In this paper we use N-particle wavefunctions, which follow from the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory, to settle this issue.
