The Bogoliubov Theory of a BEC in Particle Representation

In the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory of BEC the Bogoliubov transformation between quasiparticles and particles is nonlinear. We invert this nonlinear transformation and give general expression for eigenstates of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian in particle representation. The particle representation unveils structure of a condensate multiparticle wavefunction. We give several examples to illustrate the general formalism.

Changes of the topological charge of vortices

We consider changes of the topological charge of vortices in quantum mechanics by investigating analytical examples where the creation or annihilation of vortices occurs. In classical hydrodynamics of non-viscous fluids the Helmholtz-Kelvin theorem ensures that the velocity field circulation is conserved. We discuss applicability of the theorem in the hydrodynamical formulation of quantum mechanics showing that the assumptions of the theorem may be broken in quantum evolution of the wavefunction leading to a change of the topological charge.

Mean field loops versus quantum anti-crossing nets in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an asymmetric double well potential. Solutions of the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveal intrinsic loops in the energy (or chemical potential) level behavior when the shape of the potential is varied. We investigate the corresponding behavior of the quantum (many-body) energy levels. Applying the two-mode approximation to the bosonic field operators, we show that the quantum energy levels create an anti-crossing net inside the region bounded by the loop of the mean field solution.

Quantum Depletion of an Excited Condensate

We analyze greying of the dark soliton in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the limit of weak interaction between atoms. The condensate initially prepared in the excited dark soliton state is loosing atoms because of spontaneous quantum depletion. These atoms are depleted from the soliton state into single particle states with nonzero density in the notch of the soliton. As a result the image of the soliton is losing contrast. This quantum depletion mechanism is efficient even at zero temperature when a thermal cloud is absent.

Greying of the Dark Soliton: Depletion in the Anomalous Mode of the Bogoliubov Theory

Quantum depletion from an atomic quasi one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a dark soliton is studied in a framework of the Bogoliubov theory. Depletion is dominated by an anomalous mode localized in a notch of the condensate wave function. Depletion in the anomalous mode requires different treatment than depletion without anomalous modes. In particular, quantum depletion in the Bogoliubov vacuum of the anomalous mode is experimentally irrelevant. A dark soliton is initially prepared in a state with minimal depletion which is not a stationary state of the Bogoliubov theory. The notch fills up with incoherent atoms depleted from the condensate. For realistic parameters the filling time can be as short as 10 ms.

Stirring Bose-Einstein condensate

By shining a tightly focused laser light on the condensate and moving the center of the beam along the spiral line one may stir the condensate and create vortices. It is shown that one can induce rotation of the condensate in the direction opposite to the direction of the stirring.

Manipulating the shape of electronic non-dispersive wave-packets in the hydrogen atom: numerical tests in realistic experimental conditions

We show that combination of a linearly polarized resonant microwave field and a parallel static electric field may be used to create a non-dispersive electronic wavepacket in Rydberg atoms. The static electric field allows for manipulation of the shape of the elliptical trajectory the wavepacket is propagating on. Exact quantum numerical calculations for realistic experimental parameters show that the wavepacket evolving on a linear orbit can be very easily prepared in a laboratory either by a direct optical excitation or by preparing an atom in an extremal Stark state and then slowly switching on the microwave field. The latter scheme seems to be very resistant to experimental imperfections. Once the wavepacket on the linear orbit is excited, the static field may be used to manipulate the shape of the orbit.

Collective excitation of trapped degenerate Fermi gases

We show that the slow driving of a focused laser beam through the cloud of trapped cold fermions allows for a creation of the collective excitation in the system. The method, proposed originally by us for bosons, seems to be quite feasible experimentally -- it requires only an appropriate change in time of the potential in atomic traps, as realized in laboratories already.

Simple method for excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate

An appropriate, time-dependent modification of the trapping potential may be sufficient to create effectively collective excitations in a cold atom Bose-Einstein condensate. The proposed method is complementary to earlier suggestions and should allow the creation of both dark solitons and vortices.

Wannier threshold law for two electron escape in the presence of an external electric field

We consider double ionization of atoms or ions by electron impact in the presence of a static electric field. As in Wanniers analysis of the analogous situation without external field the dynamics near threshold is dominated by a saddle. With a field the saddle lies in a subspace of symmetrically escaping electrons. Near threshold the classical cross section scales with excess energy E like sigma=E^alpha, where the exponent alpha can be determined from the stability of the saddle and does not depend on the field strength. For example, if the remaining ion has charge Z=2, the exponent is 1.292, significantly different from the 1.056 without the field.

Non-sequential triple ionization in strong fields

We consider the final stage of triple ionization of atoms in a strong linearly polarized laser field. We propose that for intensities below the saturation value for triple ionization the process is dominated by the simultaneous escape of three electrons from a highly excited intermediate complex. We identify within a classical model two pathways to triple ionization, one with a triangular configuration of electrons and one with a more linear one. Both are saddles in phase space. A stability analysis indicates that the triangular configuration has the larger cross sections and should be the dominant one. Trajectory simulations within the dominant symmetry subspace reproduce the experimentally observed distribution of ion momenta parallel to the polarization axis.

A method for collective excitation of Bose-Einstein condensate

It is shown that by an appropriate modification of the trapping potential one may create collective excitation in cold atom Bose-Einstein condensate. The proposed method is complementary to earlier suggestions. It seems to be feasible experimentally --- it requires only a proper change in time of the potential in atomic traps, as realized in laboratories already.

Pathways to double ionization of atoms in strong fields

We discuss the final stages of double ionization of atoms in a strong linearly polarized laser field within a classical model. We propose that all trajectories leading to non-sequential double ionization pass close to a saddle in phase space which we identify and characterize. The saddle lies in a two degree of freedom subspace of symmetrically escaping electrons. The distribution of longitudinal momenta of ions as calculated within the subspace shows the double hump structure observed in experiments. Including a symmetric bending mode of the electrons allows us to reproduce the transverse ion momenta. We discuss also a path to sequential ionization and show that it does not lead to the observed momentum distributions.

Driven Rydberg atoms reveal quartic level repulsion

The dynamics of Rydberg states of a hydrogen atom subject simultaneously to uniform static electric field and two microwave fields with commensurate frequencies is considered in the range of small fields amplitudes. In the certain range of the parameters of the system the classical secular motion of the electronic ellipse reveals chaotic behavior. Quantum mechanically, when the fine structure of the atom is taken into account, the energy level statistics obey predictions appropriate for the symplectic Gaussian random matrix ensemble.

Classical analysis of correlated multiple ionization in strong fields

We discuss the final stages of the simultaneous ionization of two or more electrons due to a strong laser pulse. An analysis of the classical dynamics suggests that the dominant pathway for non-sequential escape has the electrons escaping in a symmetric arrangement. Classical trajectory models within and near to this symmetry subspace support the theoretical considerations and give final momentum distributions in close agreement with experiments.

Multielectron ionization of atoms in strong fields: Classical analysis in symmetric subspace

We consider the final stage of multiple ionization of atoms in a strong linearly polarized laser field within a classical model. We propose that non-sequential multiple ionization is dominated by symmetric escape from a highly excited intermediate complex. For a configuration of N electrons with C_Nv symmetry in a plane perpendicular to the electric field we analyze the classical motion in phase space and discuss the final momentum distribution parallel and perpendicular to the polarization axis. The results are in good agreement with recent experiment of multiple ionization in Ne.

Classical double ionization of atoms in strong fields

Recent high resolution measurements of the momenta of two electrons emitted from Argon atoms in a strong laser field show a strong preference for the outgoing electrons to have similar momenta and to be ejected in the same direction along the field. We discuss the final stages of this process in a classical model in the spirit of Wanniers approach to double ionization after electron impact. Starting from an intermediate state of high but negative energy the field opens up a channel through which both electrons can escape. Near the threshold for this process Coulomb repulsion favors an escape with the electron momenta and positions symmetric with respect to the electric field axis. Classical trajectory simulations within this symmetry subspace account for most features of the observed momentum distribution.

Non-resonant driving of H atom with broken time-reversal symmetry

The dynamics of atomic hydrogen placed in a static electric field and illuminated by elliptically polarized microwaves is studied in the range of small field amplitudes where perturbation calculations are applicable. For a general configuration of the fields any generalized time-reversal symmetry is broken and, as the classical dynamics is chaotic, the level statistics obeys the random matrices prediction of Gaussian unitary ensemble.
