An Efficient One-Class SVM for Anomaly Detection in the Internet of Things

Insecure Internet of things (IoT) devices pose significant threats to critical infrastructure and the Internet at large; detecting anomalous behavior from these devices remains of critical importance, but fast, efficient, accurate anomaly detection (also called "novelty detection") for these classes of devices remains elusive. One-Class Support Vector Machines (OCSVM) are one of the state-of-the-art approaches for novelty detection (or anomaly detection) in machine learning, due to their flexibility in fitting complex nonlinear boundaries between {normal} and {novel} data. IoT devices in smart homes and cities and connected building infrastructure present a compelling use case for novelty detection with OCSVM due to the variety of devices, traffic patterns, and types of anomalies that can manifest in such environments. Much previous research has thus applied OCSVM to novelty detection for IoT. Unfortunately, conventional OCSVMs introduce significant memory requirements and are computationally expensive at prediction time as the size of the train set grows, requiring space and time that scales with the number of training points. These memory and computational constraints can be prohibitive in practical, real-world deployments, where large training sets are typically needed to develop accurate models when fitting complex decision boundaries. In this work, we extend so-called Nyström and (Gaussian) Sketching approaches to OCSVM, by combining these methods with clustering and Gaussian mixture models to achieve significant speedups in prediction time and space in various IoT settings, without sacrificing detection accuracy.

Breakdown of quantum-classical correspondence and dynamical generation of entanglement

The {\it exchange} interaction arising from the particle indistinguishability is of central importance to physics of many-particle quantum systems. Here we study analytically the dynamical generation of quantum entanglement induced by this interaction in an isolated system, namely, an ideal Fermi gas confined in a chaotic cavity, which evolves unitarily from a non-Gaussian pure state. We find that the breakdown of the quantum-classical correspondence of particle motion, via dramatically changing the spatial structure of many-body wavefunction, leads to profound changes of the entanglement structure. Furthermore, for a class of initial states, such change leads to the approach to thermal equilibrium everywhere in the cavity, with the well-known Ehrenfest time in quantum chaos as the thermalization time. Specifically, the quantum expectation values of various correlation functions at different spatial scales are all determined by the Fermi-Dirac distribution. In addition, by using the reduced density matrix (RDM) and the entanglement entropy (EE) as local probes, we find that the gas inside a subsystem is at equilibrium with that outside, and its thermal entropy is the EE, even though the whole system is in a pure state. As a by-product of this work, we provide an analytical solution supporting an important conjecture on thermalization, made and numerically studied by Garrison and Grover in: Phys. Rev. X \textbf{8}, 021026 (2018), and strengthen its statement.

Graviton Chirality and Topological Order in the Half-filled Landau Level

The fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level (LL) filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. We demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.

Effect of surface disorder on the chiral surface states of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system

We investigate the effect of surface disorder on the chiral surface states of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system. Utilizing a transfer-matrix method, we find that the localization length of the surface state along the magnetic field decreases with the surface disorder strength in the weak disorder regime, but increases anomalously in the strong disorder regime. In the strong disorder regime, the surface states mainly locate at the first inward layer to avoid the strong disorder in the outmost layer. The anomalous increase of the localization length can be explained by an effective model, which maps the strong disorder on the surface layer to the weak disorder on the first inward layer. Our work demonstrates that surface disorder can be an effective way to control the transport behavior of the surface states along the magnetic field. We also investigate the effect of surface disorder on the full distribution of conductances P(g) of the surface states in the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) regime for various surface disorder strengths. In particular, we find that P(g) is Gaussian in the quasi-1D metal regime and log-normal in the quasi-1D insulator regime. In the crossover regime, P(g) exhibits highly nontrivial forms, whose shapes coincide with the results obtained from the Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar equation of a weakly disordered quasi-1D wire in the absence of time-reversal symmetry. Our results suggest that P(g) is fully determined by the average conductance, independent of the details of the system, in agreement with the single-parameter scaling hypothesis.

Completion Time Minimization in Wireless-Powered UAV-Assisted Data Collection System (Full Version)

In unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted data collection system, UAVs can be deployed to charge ground terminals (GTs) via wireless power transfer (WPT) and collect data from them via wireless information transmission (WIT). In this paper, we aim to minimize the time required by a UAV via jointly optimizing the trajectory of the UAV and the transmission scheduling for all the GTs. This problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) which are difficult to address in general. To this end, we develop an iterative algorithm based on binary search and successive convex optimization (SCO) to solve it. The simulation shows that our proposed solution outperforms the benchmark algorithms.

Exactly solvable model of Fermi arcs and pseudogap

We introduce a very simple and exactly solvable model that supports Fermi arcs in its ground state and excitation spectrum. These arcs come in pairs, and merge into what we call a pseudo Fermi surface along which fermions are gapped; this fermion gap is naturally identified as a pseudogap. Comparison will be made with phenomenology of high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Spin-valley locking, bulk quantum Hall effect and chiral surface state in a noncentrosymmetric Dirac semimetal BaMnSb$_2$

Spin-valley locking in the band structure of monolayers of MoS$_2$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides has attracted enormous interest, since it offers potential for valleytronic and optoelectronic applications. Such an exotic electronic state has sparsely been seen in bulk materials. Here, we report spin-valley locking in a bulk Dirac semimetal BaMnSb$_2$. We find valley and spin are inherently coupled for both valence and conduction bands in this material. This is revealed by comprehensive studies using first principle calculations, tight-binding and effective model analyses, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum transport measurements. Moreover, this material also exhibits a stacked quantum Hall effect. The spin-valley degeneracy extracted from the plateau height of quantized Hall resistivity is close to 2. This result, together with the observed Landau level spin splitting, further confirms the spin-valley locking picture. In the extreme quantum limit, we have also observed a two-dimensional chiral metal at the side surface, which represents a novel topological quantum liquid. These findings establish BaMnSb$_2$ as a rare platform for exploring coupled spin and valley physics in bulk single crystals and accessing 3D interacting topological states.

Optimizing Multi-UAV Deployment in 3D Space to Minimize Task Completion Time in UAV-Enabled Mobile Edge Computing Systems

In Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) systems, UAVs can carry edge servers to help ground user equipment (UEs) offloading their computing tasks to the UAVs for execution. This paper aims to minimize the total time required for the UAVs to complete the offloaded tasks, while optimizing the three-dimensional (3D) deployment of UAVs, including their flying height and horizontal positions. Although the formulated optimization is a mixed integer nonlinear programmming, we convert it to a convex problem and develop a successive convex approximation (SCA) based algorithm to effectively solve it. The simulation results show that the joint optimization of the horizontal and the vertical position of a group of UAVs can achieve better performance than the traditional algorithms.

AI Driven Heterogeneous MEC System with UAV Assistance for Dynamic Environment -- Challenges and Solutions

By taking full advantage of Computing, Communication and Caching (3C) resources at the network edge, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is envisioned as one of the key enablers for the next generation networks. However, current fixed-location MEC architecture may not be able to make real-time decision in dynamic environment, especially in large-scale scenarios. To address this issue, in this paper, a Heterogeneous MEC (H-MEC) architecture is proposed, which is composed of fixed unit, i.e., Ground Stations (GSs) as well as moving nodes, i.e., Ground Vehicles (GVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), all with 3C resource enabled. The key challenges in H-MEC, i.e., mobile edge node management, real-time decision making, user association and resource allocation along with the possible Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions are discussed. In addition, the AI-based joint Resource schEduling (ARE) framework with two different AI-based mechanisms, i.e., Deep neural network (DNN)-based and deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based architectures are proposed. DNN-based solution with online incremental learning applies the global optimizer and therefore has better performance than the DRL-based architecture with online policy updating, but requires longer training time. The simulation results are given to verify the efficiency of our proposed ARE framework.

6G Cellular Networks and Connected Autonomous Vehicles

With 5G mobile communication systems been commercially rolled out, research discussions on next generation mobile systems, i.e., 6G, have started. On the other hand, vehicular technologies are also evolving rapidly, from connected vehicles as coined by V2X (vehicle to everything) to autonomous vehicles to the combination of the two, i.e., the networks of connected autonomous vehicles (CAV). How fast the evolution of these two areas will go head-in-head is of great importance, which is the focus of this paper. Based on a brief overview on the technological evolution of V2X to CAV and 6G key technologies, this paper explores two complementary research directions, namely, 6G for CAVs versus CAVs for 6G. The former investigates how various 6G key enablers, such as THz, cell free communication and artificial intelligence (AI), can be utilized to provide CAV mission-critical services. The latter discusses how CAVs can facilitate effective deployment and operation of 6G systems. This paper attempts to investigate the interactions between the two technologies to spark more research efforts in these areas.

Construction of a series of new $ν=2/5$ fractional quantum Hall wave functions by conformal field theory

In this paper, a series of $ν=2/5$ fractional quantum Hall wave functions are constructed from conformal field theory(CFT). They share the same topological properties with states constructed by Jain's composite fermion approach. Upon exact lowest Landau level(LLL) projection, some of Jain composite fermion states would not survive if constraints on Landau level indices given in the appendices of this paper were not satisfied. By contrast, states constructed from CFT always stay in LLL. These states are characterized by different topological shifts and multibody relative angular momenta. As a by-product, in the appendices we prove the necessary conditions for general $ ν=p/(2p+1) $ composite fermion states to have nonvanishing LLL projection.

Thouless conductances of a three-dimensional quantum Hall system

We investigate the longitudinal conductance of a disordered three-dimensional (3D) quantum Hall system within a tight-binding lattice model using numerical Thouless conductance calculations. For the bulk, we confirm that the mobility edges are independent of the propagating directions in this anisotropic system. As disorder increases, the conductance peak of the lowest subband in the horizontal direction floats to the central subband as in the two-dimensional (2D) case, while there is no clear evidence of floating in the vertical direction. We thus conclude that for extended states, the longitudinal conductance in the vertical direction behaves like a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) normal metal, while the longitudinal conductance in the horizontal direction is controlled by layered conducting states stacked coherently. Inside the quantum Hall gap, we study the novel 2D chiral surface states at the sidewalls of the sample. We demonstrate the crossover of the surface states between the quasi-1D metal and insulator regimes, which can be achieved by modifying the interlayer hopping strength and the disorder strength in the model. The typical behaviors of the Thouless conductance and the wave functions of the surface states in these two regimes are investigated. Finally, in order to predict the regime of the surface states for arbitrary parameters, we determine an explicit relationship between the localization length of surface states and the microscopic parameters of the model.

Phase Space Quantum Mechanics as a Landau Level Problem

We point out the connection between the problem of formulating quantum mechanics in phase space and projecting the motion of a quantum mechanical particle onto a particular Landau level. In particular, we show that lowest Landau level wave functions, which are widely used in studies of quantum Hall effect, are actually phase space wave functions in this context. We demonstrate the usefulness of this understanding by analyzing some simple problems, and propose other utilities.

Energy Self-Sustainability in Full-Spectrum 6G

Full-spectrum ranging from sub 6 GHz to THz and visible light will be exploited in 6G in order to reach unprecedented key-performance-indicators (KPIs). However, extraordinary amount of energy will be consumed by network infrastructure, while functions of massively deployed Internet of Everything (IoE) devices are limited by embedded batteries. Therefore, energy self-sustainable 6G is proposed in this article. First of all, it may achieve network-wide energy efficiency by exploiting cell-free and airborne access networks as well as by implementing intelligent holographic environments. Secondly, by exploiting radio-frequency/visible light signals for providing on-demand wireless power transfer (WPT) and for enabling passive backscatter communication, ``zero-energy'' devices may become a reality. Furthermore, IoE devices actively adapt their transceivers for better performance to a dynamic environment. This article aims to provide a first glance at primary designing principles of energy self-sustainable 6G.

Distributed Resource Scheduling for Large-Scale MEC Systems: A Multi-Agent Ensemble Deep Reinforcement Learning with Imitation Acceleration

We consider the optimization of distributed resource scheduling to minimize the sum of task latency and energy consumption for all the Internet of things devices (IoTDs) in a large-scale mobile edge computing (MEC) system. To address this problem, we propose a distributed intelligent resource scheduling (DIRS) framework, which includes centralized training relying on the global information and distributed decision making by each agent deployed in each MEC server. More specifically, we first introduce a novel multi-agent ensemble-assisted distributed deep reinforcement learning (DRL) architecture, which can simplify the overall neural network structure of each agent by partitioning the state space and also improve the performance of a single agent by combining decisions of all the agents. Secondly, we apply action refinement to enhance the exploration ability of the proposed DIRS framework, where the near-optimal state-action pairs are obtained by a novel Lévy flight search. Finally, an imitation acceleration scheme is presented to pre-train all the agents, which can significantly accelerate the learning process of the proposed framework through learning the professional experience from a small amount of demonstration data. Extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate that the proposed DIRS framework is efficient and outperforms the existing benchmark schemes.

$T_c$ and Pauli limited critical field of $\text{Sr}_2\text{Ru}\text{O}_4$: uniaxial strain dependence

Variations of critical temperature $T_c$ and in-plane critical field $H_{c2}$ of $\text{Sr}_2\text{Ru}\text{O}_4$ under uniaxial stress have recently been reported. We compare the strain dependence of $T_c$ and $H_{c2}$ in various pairing channels ($d$-wave, extended s-wave and $p$-wave) with the experimental observations, by studying a three-band tight-binding model that includes effects of spin-orbit and Zeeman couplings and a separable pairing interaction. Our study helps narrow down the possibility of pairing channels. The importance of the multi-band nature of $\text{Sr}_2\text{Ru}\text{O}_4$ is also highlighted.

Stacked Auto Encoder Based Deep Reinforcement Learning for Online Resource Scheduling in Large-Scale MEC Networks

An online resource scheduling framework is proposed for minimizing the sum of weighted task latency for all the Internet of things (IoT) users, by optimizing offloading decision, transmission power and resource allocation in the large-scale mobile edge computing (MEC) system. Towards this end, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based solution is proposed, which includes the following components. Firstly, a related and regularized stacked auto encoder (2r-SAE) with unsupervised learning is applied to perform data compression and representation for high dimensional channel quality information (CQI) data, which can reduce the state space for DRL. Secondly, we present an adaptive simulated annealing based approach (ASA) as the action search method of DRL, in which an adaptive h-mutation is used to guide the search direction and an adaptive iteration is proposed to enhance the search efficiency during the DRL process. Thirdly, a preserved and prioritized experience replay (2p-ER) is introduced to assist the DRL to train the policy network and find the optimal offloading policy. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance while significantly decreasing the computational time compared with existing benchmarks.

Topological Interface between Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian Order in $ν=5/2$ Quantum Hall Effect

Recent thermal Hall experiment pumped new energy into the problem of $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall effect, which motivated novel interpretations based on formation of mesoscopic puddles made of Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological orders. Here, we study an interface between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, which may play crucial roles in thermal transport, by means of state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group simulations on the cylinder geometry. We provide compelling evidences that indicate the edge modes of the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian state strongly hybridize with each other around the interface. Moreover, we demonstrate an intrinsic electric dipole moment emerges at the interface, similar to the "p-n" junction sandwiched between N-type and P-type semiconductor. Importantly, we elucidate the topological origin of this dipole moment, whose formation is to counterbalance the mismatch of guiding-center Hall viscosity of bulk Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian state.
