H-AP Deployment for Joint Wireless Information and Energy Transfer in Smart Cities

With the wireless communication being more various in the future, it's becoming challenging to prolong the lifetime of many battery powered devices, since frequently replacing their batteries is a cumbersome job. An hybrid access point (H-AP) is capable of simultaneously operating wireless information transfer (WIT) and wireless energy transfer (WET) by exploiting the radio frequency (RF) signals. By jointly considering both the mobility of the user and the popularity of the sites, we focus on the design of the H-AP's deployment scheme. Specifically, a mobility model of the grid based city streets is exploited for characterising the users' movements. Based on this mobility model, the impact of the deployment site's popularity on the WIT and WET efficiencies is firstly analysed. Then, an H-AP deployment scheme for striking a balance between the WIT and the WET efficiencies is proposed, which is regarded as the B-deployment scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that the B-deployment scheme is more flexible for satisfying diverse requirement of the WIT and WET efficiencies.

Joint Interleaver and Modulation Design For Multi-User SWIPT-NOMA

Radio frequency (RF) signals can be relied upon for conventional wireless information transfer (WIT) and for challenging wireless power transfer (WPT), which triggers the significant research interest in the topic of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). By further exploiting the advanced non-orthogonal-multiple-access (NOMA) technique, we are capable of improving the spectrum efficiency of the resource-limited SWIPT system. In our SWIPT system, a hybrid access point (H-AP) superimposes the modulated symbols destined to multiple WIT users by exploiting the power-domain NOMA, while WPT users are capable of harvesting the energy carried by the superposition symbols. In order to maximise the amount of energy transferred to the WPT users, we propose a joint design of the energy interleaver and the constellation rotation based modulator in the symbol-block level by constructively superimposing the symbols destined to the WIT users in the power domain. Furthermore, a transmit power allocation scheme is proposed to guarantee the symbol-error-ratio (SER) of all the WIT users. By considering the sensitivity of practical energy harvesters, the simulation results demonstrate that our scheme is capable of substantially increasing the WPT performance without any remarkable degradation of the WIT performance.

Tensor Processing Units for Financial Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo methods are critical to many routines in quantitative finance such as derivatives pricing, hedging and risk metrics. Unfortunately, Monte Carlo methods are very computationally expensive when it comes to running simulations in high-dimensional state spaces where they are still a method of choice in the financial industry. Recently, Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) have provided considerable speedups and decreased the cost of running Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) in Deep Learning. After highlighting computational similarities between training neural networks with SGD and simulating stochastic processes, we ask in the present paper whether TPUs are accurate, fast and simple enough to use for financial Monte Carlo. Through a theoretical reminder of the key properties of such methods and thorough empirical experiments we examine the fitness of TPUs for option pricing, hedging and risk metrics computation. In particular we demonstrate that, in spite of the use of mixed precision, TPUs still provide accurate estimators which are fast to compute when compared to GPUs. We also show that the Tensorflow programming model for TPUs is elegant, expressive and simplifies automated differentiation.

Interlayer correlated fractional quantum Hall state in the ν = 4/5 bilayer system

We perform exact diagonalization studies for fractional quantum Hall states at filing factor 4/5 in a bilayer system, on a torus with various aspect ratios and angles. We find that in the absence of tunneling, two weakly coupled 2/5-layers undergo a phase transition into an interlayer-correlated regime, which is also Abelian with the five-fold degeneracy on the torus. In the limit of zero layer separation, this phase becomes a singlet in the pseudospin variable describing the layer degree-of-freedom. By studying the Chern-number matrix, we show that the K-matrix describing the interlayer-correlated regime requires matrix dimension larger than two and this regime is in particular not described by a Halperin state. A detailed analysis of possible 4 X 4 K-matrices having the requisite symmetries and quantum numbers shows that there is only one equivalence class of such matrices. A model wave function representing this universality class is constructed. The role of separate particle number conservation in both layers is discussed, and it is argued that this additional symmetry allows for the further distinction of two different symmetry protected Abelian phases in the interlayer correlated regime. Interlayer tunneling breaks this symmetry, and can drive the system into a single-layer regime when strong enough. A qualitative phase diagram in the tunneling-layer separation parameter space is proposed based on our numerical results.

Deep Learning Based Joint Resource Scheduling Algorithms for Hybrid MEC Networks

In this paper, we consider a hybrid mobile edge computing (H-MEC) platform, which includes ground stations (GSs), ground vehicles (GVs) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs), all with mobile edge cloud installed to enable user equipments (UEs) or Internet of thing (IoT) devices with intensive computing tasks to offload. Our objective is to obtain an online offloading algorithm to minimize the energy consumption of all the UEs, by jointly optimizing the positions of GVs and UAVs, user association and resource allocation in real-time, while considering the dynamic environment. To this end, we propose a hybrid deep learning based online offloading (H2O) framework where a large-scale path-loss fuzzy c-means (LSFCM) algorithm is first proposed and used to predict the optimal positions of GVs and UAVs. Secondly, a fuzzy membership matrix U-based particle swarm optimization (U-PSO) algorithm is applied to solve the mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems and generate the sample datasets for the deep neural network (DNN) where the fuzzy membership matrix can capture the small-scale fading effects and the information of mutual interference. Thirdly, a DNN with the scheduling layer is introduced to provide user association and computing resource allocation under the practical latency requirement of the tasks and limited available computing resource of H-MEC. In addition, different from traditional DNN predictor, we only input one UE information to the DNN at one time, which will be suitable for the scenarios where the number of UE is varying and avoid the curse of dimensionality in DNN.

High Performance Monte Carlo Simulation of Ising Model on TPU Clusters

Large-scale deep learning benefits from an emerging class of AI accelerators. Some of these accelerators' designs are general enough for compute-intensive applications beyond AI and Cloud TPU is one such example. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel approach using TensorFlow on Cloud TPU to simulate the two-dimensional Ising Model. TensorFlow and Cloud TPU framework enable the simple and readable code to express the complicated distributed algorithm without compromising the performance. Our code implementation fits into a small Jupyter Notebook and fully utilizes Cloud TPU's efficient matrix operation and dedicated high speed inter-chip connection. The performance is highly competitive: it outperforms the best published benchmarks to our knowledge by 60% in single-core and 250% in multi-core with good linear scaling. When compared to Tesla V100 GPU, the single-core performance maintains a ~10% gain. We also demonstrate that using low precision arithmetic---bfloat16---does not compromise the correctness of the simulation results.

Metallic state in bosonic systems with continuously degenerate minima

In systems above one dimension a continuously degenerate minimum of the single particle dispersion is realized due to one or a combination of system-parameters such as lattice structure, isotropic spin-orbit coupling, and interactions. A unit codimension of the dispersion-minima leads to a divergent density of states which enhances the effects of interactions, and may lead to novel states of matter as exemplified by Luttinger liquids in one dimensional bosonic systems. Here we show that in dilute, homogeneous bosonic systems above one dimension, weak, spin-independent, inter-particle interactions stabilize a metallic state at zero temperature in the presence of a curved manifold of dispersion minima. In this metallic phase the system possesses a quasi long-range order with non-universal scaling exponents. At a fixed positive curvature of the manifold, increasing either the dilution or the interaction strength destabilizes the metallic state towards charge density wave states that break one or more symmetries. The magnitude of the wave vector of the dominant charge density wave state is controlled by the product of the mean density of bosons and the curvature of the manifold. We obtain the zero temperature phase diagram, and identify the phase boundary.

Composite fermions in Fock space: Operator algebra, recursion relations, and order parameters

We develop recursion relations, in particle number, for all (unprojected) Jain composite fermion (CF) wave functions. These recursions generalize a similar recursion originally written down by Read for Laughlin states, in mixed first-second quantized notation. In contrast, our approach is purely second-quantized, giving rise to an algebraic, `pure guiding center' definition of CF states that de-emphasizes first quantized many-body wave functions. Key to the construction is a second-quantized representation of the flux attachment operator that maps any given fermion state to its CF counterpart. An algebra of generators of edge excitations is identified. In particular, in those cases where a well-studied parent Hamiltonian exists, its properties can be entirely understood in the present framework, and the identification of edge state generators can be understood as an instance of `microscopic bosonization'. The intimate connection of Read's original recursion with `non-local order parameters' generalizes to the present situation, and we are able to give explicit second quantized formulas for non-local order parameters associated with CF states.

UAV-Assisted Relaying and Edge Computing: Scheduling and Trajectory Optimization

In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) architecture, in which a UAV roaming around the area may serve as a computing server to help user equipment (UEs) compute their tasks or act as a relay for further offloading their computation tasks to the access point (AP). We aim to minimize the weighted sum energy consumption of the UAV and UEs subject to the task constraints, the information-causality constraints, the bandwidth allocation constraints and the UAV's trajectory constraints. The required optimization is nonconvex, and an alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the computation resource scheduling, bandwidth allocation, and the UAV's trajectory in an iterative fashion. Numerical results demonstrate that significant performance gain is obtained over conventional methods. Also, the advantages of the proposed algorithm are more prominent when handling computation-intensive latency-critical tasks.

Task and Bandwidth Allocation for UAV-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing with Trajectory Design

In this paper, we investigate a mobile edge computing (MEC) architecture with the assistance of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The UAV acts as a computing server to help the user equipment (UEs) compute their tasks as well as a relay to further offload the UEs' tasks to the access point (AP) for computing. The total energy consumption of the UAV and UEs is minimized by jointly optimizing the task allocation, the bandwidth allocation and the UAV's trajectory, subject to the task constraints, the information-causality constraints, the bandwidth allocation constraints, and the UAV's trajectory constraints. The formulated optimization problem is nonconvex, and we propose an alternating algorithm to optimize the parameters iteratively. The effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by the simulation results, where great performance gain is achieved in comparison with some practical baselines, especially in handling the computation-intensive and latency-critical tasks.

Unified Offloading Decision Making and Resource Allocation in ME-RAN

In order to support communication and computation cooperation, we propose ME-RAN architecture, which consists of mobile edge cloud (ME) as the computation provision platform and radio access network (RAN) as the communication interface. Cooperative offloading framework is proposed to achieve the following tasks: (1) to increase user equipment' (UE') computing capacity by triggering offloading action, especially for the UE which cannot complete the computation locally; (2) to reduce the energy consumption for all the UEs by considering limited computing and communication resources. Based on above objectives, we formulate the energy consumption minimization problem, which is shown to be a non-convex mixed-integer programming. Firstly, Decentralized Local Decision Algorithm (DLDA) is proposed for each UE to estimate the possible local resource consumption and decide if offloading is in its interest. This operation will reduce the overhead and signalling in the later stage. Then, Centralized decision and resource Allocation algoRithm (CAR) is proposed to conduct the decision making and resource allocation in ME-RAN. Moreover, two low complexity algorithms, i.e., UE with largest saved energy consumption accepted first (CAR-E) and UE with smallest required data rate accepted first (CAR-D) are proposed. Simulations show that the performance of the proposed algorithms is very close to the exhaustive search but with much less complexity.

Chiral Gravitons in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

We elucidate the nature of neutral collective excitations of fractional quantum Hall liquids in the long-wavelength limit. We demonstrate that they are chiral gravitons carrying angular momentum - 2, which are quanta of quantum motion of an internal metric, and show up as resonance peaks in the systems response to what is the fractional Hall analog of gravitational waves. Relation with existing and possible future experimental work that can detect these fractional quantum Hall gravitons and reveal their chirality are discussed.

RL-Based User Association and Resource Allocation for Multi-UAV enabled MEC

In this paper, multi-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled mobile edge computing (MEC), i.e., UAVE is studied, where several UAVs are deployed as flying MEC platform to provide computing resource to ground user equipments (UEs). Compared to the traditional fixed location MEC, UAV enabled MEC (i.e., UAVE) is particular useful in case of temporary events, emergency situations and on-demand services, due to its high flexibility, low cost and easy deployment features. However, operation of UAVE faces several challenges, two of which are how to achieve both 1) the association between multiple UEs and UAVs and 2) the resource allocation from UAVs to UEs, while minimizing the energy consumption for all the UEs. To address this, we formulate the above problem into a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), which is difficult to be solved in general, especially in the large-scale scenario. We then propose a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based user Association and resource Allocation (RLAA) algorithm to tackle this problem efficiently and effectively. Numerical results show that the proposed RLAA can achieve the optimal performance with comparison to the exhaustive search in small scale, and have considerable performance gain over other typical algorithms in large-scale cases.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in strongly correlated d-wave superconductors

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase is an unconventional superconducting state found under the influence of strong Zeeman field. This phase is identified by finite center-of-mass momenta in the Cooper pairs, causing the pairing amplitude to oscillate in real space. Repulsive correlations, on the other hand, smear out spatial inhomogeneities in d-wave superconductors. We investigate the FFLO state in a strongly correlated d-wave superconductor within a consolidated framework of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory and Gutzwiller approximation. We find that the profound effects of strong correlations lie in shifting the BCS-FFLO phase boundary towards a lower Zeeman field and thereby enlarging the window of the FFLO phase. In the FFLO state, our calculation features a sharp mid-gap peak in the density of states, indicating the formation of strongly localized Andreev bound states. We also find that the signatures of the FFLO phase survive even in the presence of an additional translational symmetry breaking competing order in the ground state. This is demonstrated by considering a broken symmetry ground state with a simultaneous presence of the d-wave superconducting order and a spin-density wave order, often found in unconventional superconductors.

Three-dimensional quantum Hall effect and metal-insulator transition in ZrTe5

Symmetry, dimensionality, and interaction are crucial ingredients for phase transitions and quantum states of matter. As a prominent example, the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) represents a topological phase generally regarded as characteristic for two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems, and its many aspects can be understood without invoking electron-electron interaction. The intriguing possibility of generalizing QHE to three-dimensional (3D) systems was proposed decades ago, yet it remains elusive experimentally. Here, we report clear experimental evidence for the 3D QHE observed in bulk ZrTe5 crystals. Owing to the extremely high sample quality, the extreme quantum limit with only the lowest Landau level occupied can be achieved by an applied magnetic field as low as 1.5 T. Remarkably, in this regime, we observe a dissipationless longitudinal resistivity rho_xx=0 accompanied with a well-developed Hall resistivity plateau rho_xy=(1\pm0.1) h/e^2 (λ_(F,z)/2), where λ_(F,z) is the Fermi wavelength along the field direction (z axis). This striking result strongly suggests a Fermi surface instability driven by the enhanced interaction effects in the extreme quantum limit. In addition, with further increasing magnetic field, both rho_xx and rho_xy increase dramatically and display an interesting metal-insulator transition, representing another magnetic field driven quantum phase transition. Our findings not only unambiguously reveal a novel quantum state of matter resulting from an intricate interplay among dimensionality, interaction, and symmetry breaking, but also provide a promising platform for further exploration of more exotic quantum phases and transitions in 3D systems.

From Birefringent Electrons to a Marginal or Non-Fermi Liquid of Relativistic Spin-1/2 Fermions: An Emergent Superuniversality

We present the quantum critical theory of an interacting nodal Fermi-liquid of quasi-relativisitc pseudo-spin-3/2 fermions that have a non-interacting birefringent spectrum with two distinct Fermi velocities. When such quasiparticles interact with gapless bosonic degrees of freedom that mediate either the long-range Coulomb interaction or its short range component (responsible for spontaneous symmetry breaking), in the deep infrared or quantum critical regime in two dimensions the system is respectively described by a marginal- or a non-Fermi liquid of relativistic spin-1/2 fermions (possessing a unique velocity), and is always a marginal Fermi liquid in three dimensions. We consider a possible generalization of these scenarios to fermions with an arbitrary half-odd-integer spin, and conjecture that critical spin-1/2 excitations represent a superuniversal description of the entire family of interacting quasi-relativistic fermions.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator Stabilized By Competing Interactions

We study the quantum phases driven by interaction in a semimetal with a quadratic band touching at the Fermi level. By combining the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), analytical power expanded Gibbs potential method, and the weak coupling renormalization group, we study a spinless fermion system on a checkerboard lattice at half-filling, which has a quadratic band touching in the absence of interaction. In the presence of strong nearest-neighbor ($V_1$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($V_2$) interactions, we identify a site nematic insulator phase, a stripe insulator phase, and a phase separation region, in agreement with the phase diagram obtained analytically in the strong coupling limit (i.e. in the absence of fermion hopping). In the intermediate interaction regime, we establish a quantum anomalous Hall phase in the DMRG as evidenced by the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and the appearance of a quantized Chern number $C = 1$. For weak interaction, we utilize the power expanded Gibbs potential method that treats $V_1$ and $V_2$ on equal footing, as well as the weak coupling renormalization group. Our analytical results reveal that not only the repulsive $V_1$ interaction, but also the $V_2$ interaction (both repulsive and attractive), can drive the quantum anomalous Hall phase. We also determine the phase boundary in the $V_1$-$V_2$ plane that separates the semimetal from the quantum anomalous Hall state. Finally, we show that the nematic semimetal, which was proposed for $|V_2| \gg V_1$ at weak coupling in a previous study, is absent, and the quantum anomalous Hall state is the only weak coupling instability of the spinless quadratic band touching semimetal.

Hidden thermal structure in Fock space

The emergence of quantum statistical mechanics from individual pure states of closed many-body systems is currently under intensive investigations. While most efforts have been put on the impacts of the direct interaction (i.e., the usual mutual interaction) between particles, here we study systematically and analytically the impacts of the exchange interaction, that arises from the particle indistinguishability. We show that this interaction leads an overwhelming number of Fock states to exhibit a structure, that can be resolved only by observables adjusted according to system's dynamical properties and from which thermal distributions emerge. This hidden thermal structure in Fock space is found to be related to the so-called limit shape of random geometric objects in mathematics. The structure enables us to uncover, for both ideal and nonideal Fermi gases, new mechanisms for the emergence of quantum statistical mechanics from individual eigenstates.
