Dipolar Excitons, Spontaneous Phase Coherence, and Superfluid-Insulator Transition in Bi-layer Quantum Hall Systems at $ν=1$

The spontaneous interlayer phase coherent (111) state of bi-layer Quantum Hall system at filling factor $ν=1$ may be viewed as a condensate of interlayer particle-hole pairs or excitons. We show in this paper that when the layers are biased in such a way that these excitons are very dilute, they may be viewed as point-like bosons. We calculate the exciton dispersion relation, and show that the exciton-exciton interaction is dominated by the dipole moment they carry. In addition to the phase coherent state, we also find a Wigner Crystal/Glass phase in the presence/absence of disorder which is an insulating state for the excitons. The position of the phase boundary is estimated and the properties of the superfluid-insulator type transition between these two phases is discussed. We also discuss the relation between these "dipolar" excitons and the "dipolar" composite fermions studied in the context of half-filled Landau level.

Nondissipative Drag Conductance as a Topological Quantum Number

We show in this paper that the boundary condition averaged nondissipative drag conductance of two coupled mesoscopic rings with no tunneling, evaluated in a particular many-particle eigenstate, is a topological invariant characterized by a Chern integer. Physical implications of this observation are discussed.

Spontaneous Breakdown of Translational Symmetry in Quantum Hall Systems: Crystalline Order in High Landau Levels

We report on results of systematic numerical studies of two-dimensional electron gas systems subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level partially filled by electrons. Our results are strongly suggestive of a breakdown of translational symmetry and the presence of crystalline order in the ground state. This is in sharp contrast with the physics of the lowest and first excited Landau levels, and in good qualitative agreement with earlier Hartree-Fock studies. Experimental implications of our results are discussed.

Inhomogeneous superconducting state in quasi-one-dimensional systems

We report on results of theoretical study of non-uniform superconducting states in quasi-one-dimensional systems, with attractive interactions and Zeeman splitting between electron spins. Using bosonization to treat intrachain electron-electron interactions, and a combination of renormalization group and mean-field approximation to tackle interchain couplings, we obtain the phase diagram of the system, and show that the transition between the uniform and non-uniform superconducting phases is a continuous transition of the commensurate-incommensurate type.

Low energy collective modes, Ginzburg-Landau theory, and pseudogap behavior in superconductors with long-range pairing interactions

We study the superconducting instability in systems with long but finite ranged, attractive, pairing interactions. We show that such long-ranged superconductors exhibit a new class of fluctuations in which the internal structure of the Cooper pair wave function is soft, and thus lead to "pseudogap" behavior in which the actual transition temperature is greatly depressed from its mean field value. These fluctuations are {\it not} phase fluctuations of the standard superconducting order parameter, and lead to a highly unusual Ginzburg-Landau description. We suggest that the crossover between the BCS limit of a short-ranged attraction and our problem is of interest in the context of superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates.

Sliding Phases via Magnetic Fields

We show that three dimensional "sliding" analogs of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase, in stacked classical two-dimensional XY models and quantum systems of coupled Luttinger Liquids, can be enlarged by the application of a parallel magnetic field, which has the effect of increasing the scaling dimensions of the most relevant operators that can perturb the critical sliding phases. Within our renormalization group analysis, we also find that for the case of coupled Luttinger liquids, this effect is interleaved with the onset of the integer quantum Hall effect for weak interactions and fields. We comment on experimental implications for a conjectured smectic metal phase in the cuprates.

Charge Density Wave Ordering in Half Filled High Landau Levels

We report on numerical studies of two-dimensional electron systems in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level index (N > 1) half filled by electrons. Strong and sharp peaks are found in the wave vector dependence of both static density susceptibility and equal-time density-density correlation function, in finite-size systems with up to twelve electrons. Qualitatively different from partially filled lowest (N=0) Landau level, these results are suggestive of a tendency toward charge density wave ordering in these systems. The ordering wave vector is found to decrease with increasing N.

Josephson Effect in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superconductors

Due to the difference in the momenta of the superconducting order parameters, the Josephson current in a Josephson junction between a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconductor and a conventional BCS superconductor is suppressed. We show that the Josephson current may be recovered by applying a magnetic field in the junction. The field strength and direction at which the supercurrent recovery occurs depend upon the momentum and structure of the order parameter in the FFLO state. Thus the Josephson effect provides an unambiguous way to detect the existence of an FFLO state, and to measure the momentum of the order parameter.

Comment on ``Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Haldane Phase in Random One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets"

In a recent Letter (PRL 83, 3297 (1999)), Hida presented numerical results indicating that the Haldane phase of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain is stable against bond randomness, for box distributions of the bond strength, even when the box distribution stretches to zero bond strength. The author thus concluded that the Haldane phase is stable against bond randomness for any distribution of the bond strength, no matter how broad. In this Comment, we (i) point out that the randomness distributions studied in this Letter do not represent the broadest possible distributions, and therefore these numerical results do not lead to the conclusion that the Haldane phase is stable against any randomness; and (ii) provide a semiquantitative estimate of the critical randomness beyond which the Haldane phase yields to the Random Singlet phase, in a specific class of random distribution functions for the bond strength.

Zeeman and Orbital Effects of an in-Plane Magnetic Field in Cuprate Superconductors

We discuss the effects of a magnetic field applied parallel to the Cu-O ($ab$) plane of the high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors. After briefly reviewing the Zeeman effect of the field, we study the orbital effects, using the Lawrence-Doniach model for layered superconductors as a guide to the physics. We argue that the orbital effect is qualitatively different for in-plane and inter-layer mechanisms for superconductivity. In the case of in-plane mechanisms, interlayer couplings may be modeled as a weak interlayer Josephson coupling, whose effects disappear as $H\to\infty$; in this case Zeeman dominates the effect of the field. In contrast, in the inter-layer mechanism the Josephson coupling {\em is} the driving force of superconductivity, and we argue that the in-plane field suppresses superconductivity and provides an upper bound for $H_{c2}$ which we estimate very crudely.

Spin mapping, phase diagram, and collective modes in double layer quantum Hall systems at $ν=2$

An exact spin mapping is identified to simplify the recently proposed hard-core boson description (Demler and Das Sarma, Phys. Rev. Lett., to be published) of the bilayer quantum Hall system at filling factor 2. The effective spin model describes an easy-plane ferromagnet subject to an external Zeeman field. The phase diagram of this effective model is determined exactly and found to agree with the approximate calculation of Demler and Das Sarma, while the Goldstone-mode spectrum, order parameter stiffness and Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in the canted antiferromagnetic phase are computed approximately.

Quantum Hall - insulator transitions in lattice models with strong disorder

We report results of numerical studies of the integer quantum Hall effect in a tight binding model on a two-dimensional square lattice with non-interacting electrons, in the presence of a random potential as well as a uniform magnetic field applied perpendicular to the lattice. We consider field magnitudes such that the area per flux quantum is commensurate with the lattice structure. Topological properties of the single electron wave functions are used to identify current carrying states that are responsible for the quantized Hall conductance. We study the interplay between the magnetic field and the disorder, and find a universal pattern with which the current carrying states are destroyed by increasing disorder strength, and the system driven into an insulating state. We also discuss how to interpolate results of lattice models to the continuum limit. The relationship to previous theoretical and experimental studies of quantum Hall-insulator transitions in strongly disordered systems at low magnetic fields is discussed.

Hall Drag in Correlated Double Layer Quantum Hall Systems

We show that in the limit of zero temperature, double layer quantum Hall systems exhibit a novel phenomena called Hall drag, namely a current driven in one layer induces a voltage drop in the other layer, in the direction perpendicular to the driving current. The two-by-two Hall resistivity tensor is quantized and proportional to the ${\bf K}$ matrix that describes the topological order of the quantum Hall state, even when the ${\bf K}$ matrix contains a zero eigenvalue, in which case the Hall conductivity tensor does not exist. Relation between the present work and previous ones is also discussed.

Universality at integer quantum Hall transitions

We report in this paper results of experimental and theoretical studies of transitions between different integer quantum Hall phases, as well as transition between the insulating phase and quantum Hall phases at high magnetic fields. We focus mainly on universal properties of the transitions. We demonstrate that properly defined conductivity tensor is universal at the transitions. We also present numerical results of a non-interacting electron model, which suggest that the Thouless conductance is universal at integer quantum Hall transitions, just like the conductivity tensor. Finite temperature and system size effects near the transition point are also studied.

Response of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Superconductor to a Zeeman Magnetic Field

We study the response of a two dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor to a magnetic field that couples only to the spins of the electrons. In contrast to the s-wave case, the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state is modified even at small magnetic fields, with the gap nodes widening into normal, spin polarized, pockets. We discuss the promising prospects for observing this in the cuprate superconductors in fields parallel to the Cu-O planes. We also discuss the phase diagram, inclusive of a finite momentum pairing state with a novel linkage between the momentum of the pairs and the nodes of the relative wave function.

Generation of Large Moments in a Spin-1 Chain with Random Antiferromagnetic Couplings

We study the spin-1 chain with nearest neighbor couplings that are rotationally invariant, but include both Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange, with random strengths. We demonstrate, using perturbative renormalization group methods as well as exact diagonalization of clusters, that the system generates ferromagnetic couplings under certain circumstances even when all the bare couplings are antiferromagnetic. This disorder induced instability leads to formation of large magnetic moments at low temperatures, and is a purely quantum mechanical effect that does not have a classical counterpart. The physical origin of this instability, as well as its consequences, are discussed.

A Gauge Invariant Way to Evaluate Quasiparticle Effective Mass in Fermionic Systems with Gauge Interactions

In this paper, we propose a gauge-invariant way to define and calculate the effective mass for quasiparticles in systems with gauge interactions, and apply it to a model closely related to the half-filled Landau level problem. Our model is equivalent to the Halperin-Lee-Read $ν= 1/2$ Hamiltonian with an ultraviolet cutoff $Λ$ for the gauge fields, and we expand our answer in powers of $Λ/ k_F$, assuming it is small. In this definition the effective mass depends only on the gauge-invariant density and current response functions of the system. Within RPA, this definition yields a finite result for the effective mass in our model. We also comment on corrections to this effective mass formula when processes beyond RPA are included. Finally, we comment briefly on the observation that organizing the perturbation expansion in powers of $Λ/ k_F$ is a way to systematically study the physics beyond RPA.

Current Carrying States in a Random Magnetic Field

We report results of a numerical study of noninteracting electrons moving in two dimensions, in the presence of a random potential and a random magnetic field for a sequence of finite sizes, using topological properties of the wave functions to identify extended states. Our results are consistent with the existence of a second order localization-delocalization transition driven by the random potential. The critical randomness strength and localization length exponent are estimated via a finite size scaling analysis.
