Vortex Lattice Structure of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superconductors

In superconductors with singlet pairing, the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state is expected to be stabilized by a large Zeeman splitting. We develop an efficient method to evaluate the Landau-Ginzburg free energies of FFLO-state vortex lattices and use it to simplify the considerations that determine the optimal vortex configuration at different points in the phasediagram. We demonstrate that the order parameter spatial profile is completely determined, up to a uniform translation, by its Landau level index n and the vortex Lattice structure and derive an explicit expression for the order parameter spatial profile that can be used to determine n from experimental data.

Ferromagnetic Transition in One-Dimensional Itinerant Electron Systems

We use bosonization to derive the effective field theory that properly describes ferromagnetic transition in one-dimensional itinerant electron systems. The resultant theory is shown to have dynamical exponent z=2 at tree leve and upper critical dimension d_c=2. Thus one dimension is below the upper critical dimension of the theory, and the critical behavior of the transition is controlled by an interacting fixed point, which we study via epsilon expansion. Comparisons will be made with the Hertz-Millis theory, which describes the ferromagnetic transition in higher dimensions.

Fluctuation-Driven First-Order Transition in Pauli-limited d-wave Superconductors

We study the phase transition between the normal and non-uniform (Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov) superconducting state in quasi two-dimensional d-wave superconductors at finite temperature. We obtain an appropriate Ginzburg-Landau theory for this transition, in which the fluctuation spectrum of the order parameter has a set of minima at non-zero momenta. The momentum shell renormalization group procedure combined with dimensional expansion is then applied to analyze the phase structure of the theory. We find that all fixed points have more than one relevant directions, indicating the transition is of the fluctuation-driven first order type for this universality class.

Spin Waves in Antiferromagnetic Spin Chains with Long Range Interactions

We study antiferromagnetic spin chains with unfrustrated long-range interactions that decays as a power law with exponent $β$, using the spin wave approximation. We find for sufficiently large spin $S$, the Neel order is stable at T=0 for $β< 3$, and survive up to a finite Neel temperature for $β< 2$, validating the spin-wave approach in these regimes. We estimate the critical values of $S$ and $T$ for the Neel order to be stable. The spin wave spectra are found to be gapless but have non-linear momentum dependence at long wave length, which is responsible for the suppression of quantum and thermal fluctuations and stabilizing the Neel state. We also show that for $β\le 1$ and for a large but finite-size system size $L$, the excitation gap of the system approaches zero slower than $L^{-1}$, a behavior that is in contrast to the Lieb-Schulz-Mattis theorem.

Random Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Chains with Competing Interactions

We study disordered antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains with nearest- and further-neighbor interactions using the real-space renormalization-group method. We find that the system supports two different phases, depending on the ratio of the strength between nearest-neighbor and further-neighbor interactions as well the bond randomness strength. For weak further neighbor coupling the system is in the familiar random singlet phase, while stronger further neighbor coupling drives the system to a large spin phase similar to that found in the study of random antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin chains. The appearance of the large spin phase in the absence of ferromagnetic coupling is due to the frustration introduced by further neighboring couplings, and is unique to the disordered chains.

Bond-randomness-induced Neel order in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains

Quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum spin systems show a wide range of interesting phenomena such as the spin-Peierls transition and disorder driven long range ordering. While there is no magnetic long range order in strictly one-dimensional systems, in real systems some amount of interchain coupling is always present and AF long range order may appear below a Neel ordering temperature T_N. We study the effect of bond randomness on Neel ordering in weakly coupled random AF S=1/2 chains both with and without dimerization (or spin-Peierls order). We use the real space renormalization group method to tackle the intrachain couplings, and a mean-field approximation to treat the interchain coupling. We show that in the non-dimerized chain, disorder (represented by bond randomness) enhances the Neel order parameter; in the dimerized chain which shows no magnetic ordering in the weak interchain coupling limit without randomness, disorder can actually lead to long range order. Thus disorder is shown to lead to, or enhance the tendency toward long range order, providing another example of the order-by-disorder phenomenon. We make a qualitative comparison of our results with the observed phenomenon of doping induced long range ordering in quasi-one-dimensional spin systems such as CuGeO_3.

Large Spin Formation and Thermodynamic Properties of Disordered Spin Ladders with Site Dilution

Low temperature properties of antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with bond randomness and site dilution (or doping with nonmagnetic impurities) are studied using the real-space renormalization-group technique. We find that for non zero doping concentrations the systems are driven into a phase dominated by large effective spins, i.e. the Large Spin phase. The susceptibility follows a universal Curie-like 1/T behavior at low temperature, regardless of the doping concentrations (as long as it is nonzero) and the strength of bond randomness. Very similar behavior has been found in ladders that are doped with magnetic impurities that carry spin-1.

Disorder driven collapse of the mobility gap and transition to an insulator in fractional quantum Hall effect

We study the nu=1/3 quantum Hall state in presence of the random disorder. We calculate the topologically invariant Chern number, which is the only quantity known at present to unambiguously distinguish between insulating and current carrying states in an interacting system. The mobility gap can be determined numerically this way, which is found to agree with experimental value semiquantitatively. As the disorder strength increases towards a critical value, both the mobility gap and plateau width narrow continuously and ultimately collapse leading to an insulating phase.

Edge reconstruction in the fractional quantum Hall regime

The interplay of electron-electron interaction and confining potential can lead to the reconstruction of fractional quantum Hall edges. We have performed exact diagonalization studies on microscopic models of fractional quantum Hall liquids, in finite size systems with disk geometry, and found numerical evidence of edge reconstruction under rather general conditions. In the present work we have taken into account effects like layer thickness and Landau level mixing, which are found to be of quantitative importance in edge physics. Due to edge reconstruction, additional nonchiral edge modes arise for both incompressible and compressible states. These additional modes couple to electromagnetic fields and thus can be detected in microwave conductivity measurements. They are also expected to affect the exponent of electron Green's function, which has been measured in tunneling experiments. We have studied in this work the electric dipole spectral function that is directly related to the microwave conductivity measurement. Our results are consistent with the enhanced microwave conductivity observed in experiments performed on samples with an array of antidots at low temperatures, and its suppression at higher temperatures. We also discuss the effects of the edge reconstruction on the single electron spectral function at the edge.

Field Theoretical Description of Quantum Hall Edge Reconstruction

We propose a generalization of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory to allow for a unified description of quantum Hall edges with or without edge reconstruction. Within this description edge reconstruction is found to be a quantum phase transition in the universality class of one-dimensional dilute Bose gas transition, whose critical behavior can be obtained exactly. At principal filling factors $ν=1/m$, we show the additional edge modes due to edge reconstruction modifies the point contact tunneling exponent in the low energy limit, by a small and non-universal amount.

Disorder Induced Cluster Formation near First Order Phase Transitions in Electronic Systems: Importance of Long-Range Coulomb Interaction

We discuss the effects of fluctuations of the local density of charged dopants near a first order phase transition in electronic systems, that is driven by change of charge carrier density controlled by doping level. Using a generalization of the Imry-Ma argument, we find that the first order transition is rounded by disorder at or below the lower critical dimension d_c=3, when at least one of the two phases has no screening ability. The increase of d_c from 2 (as in the random field Ising model) to 3 is due to the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction. This result suggests that large clusters of both phases will appear near such transitions due to disorder, in both two and three dimensions. Possible implications of our results on manganites and underdoped cuprates will be discussed.

Rigorous Proof of Pseudospin Ferromagnetism in Two-Component Bosonic Systems with Component-Independent Interactions

For a two-component bosonic system, the components can be mapped onto a pseudo-spin degree of freedom with spin quantum number S=1/2. We provide a rigorous proof that for a wide-range of real Hamiltonians with component independent mass and interaction, the ground state is a ferromagnetic state with pseudospin fully polarized. The spin-wave excitations are studied and found to have quadratic dispersion relations at long wave length.

Spin Waves in Random Spin Chains

We study quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chains with dilute, random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds with modified spin-wave theory. By describing thermal excitations in the language of spin waves, we successfully observe a low-temperature Curie susceptibility due to formation of large spin clusters first predicted by the real-space renormalization-group approach, as well as a crossover to a pure ferromagnetic spin chain behavior at intermediate and high temperatures. We compare our results of the modified spin-wave theory to quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Thermodynamics of strongly disordered spin ladders

We study antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with strong bond randomness, using the real space renormalization group method. We find the low-temperature spin susceptibility of the system follows non-universal power laws, and the ground state spin-spin correlation is short-ranged. Our results suggest that there is no phase transition when the bond randomness increases from zero; for strong enough randomness the system is in a Griffith region with divergent spin susceptibility and short-range spin-spin correlation.

Modified spin-wave study of random antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin chains

We study the thermodynamics of one-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnetic system with random antiferromagnetic impurity bonds. In the dilute impurity limit, we generalize the modified spin-wave theory for random spin chains, where local chemical potentials for spin-waves in ferromagnetic spin segments are introduced to ensure zero magnetization at finite temperature. This approach successfully describes the crossover from behavior of pure one-dimensional ferromagnet at high temperatures to a distinct Curie behavior due to randomness at low temperatures. We discuss the effects of impurity bond strength and concentration on the crossover and low temperature behavior.

Reconstruction of Fractional Quantum Hall Edges

We study the interplay of interaction, confining potential and effects of finite temperature at the edge of a quantum Hall liquid. Our exact diagonalization calculation indicates that edge reconstruction occurs in the fractional quantum Hall regime for a variety of confining potential, including ones that correspond to a "sharp" edge. Our finite temperature Hartree-Fock calculation for integer quantum Hall edges indicates that reconstruction is suppressed above certain temperature. We discuss the implication of our results on recent edge tunneling and microwave absorption experiments.

Ginzburg-Landau theory of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in unconventional singlet superconductors with impurities

We derive the Ginzburg-Landau theory of unconventional singlet superconductors in the presence of a Zeeman field and impurities, in order to examine the resulting Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. We show that the behavior of the FFLO phases in unconventional superconductors in the presence of impurities is qualitatively different from that found for s-wave superconductors.

Wigner Crystals in the lowest Landau level at low filling factors

We report on results of finite-size numerical studies of partially filled lowest Landau level at low electron filling factors. We find convincing evidence suggesting that electrons form Wigner Crystals at sufficiently low filling factors, and the critical filling factor is close to 1/7. At nu=1/7 we find the system undergoes a phase transition from Wigner Crystal to the incompressible Laughlin state when the short-range part of the Coulomb interaction is modified slightly. This transition is either continuous or very weakly first order.
