Transmissive RIS Transceiver-Empowered ISAC Systems: Energy Efficiency Optimization for Perfect and Imperfect CSI

In this paper, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transceiver is employed to enable an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system supporting both communication and sensing. Under both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI), we study the transmit beamforming design for the TRIS transceiver to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE), subject to per-user minimum-rate guarantees, a minimum beampattern gain toward the sensing target, and per-antenna power constraints. The corresponding EE maximization problems are challenging to solve due to the fractional objective and non-convex constraints. In particular, under imperfect CSI, the resulting semi-infinite constraints further complicate the problem. For the perfect CSI case, we first apply the fractional programming (FP) methodology to obtain more tractable reformulations of the rate functions, and then propose an iterative algorithm based on the majorization-minimization (MM) framework. For the imperfect CSI case, we utilize the S-Procedure to transform the semi-infinite inequality constraints into linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), and further develop an efficient MM-based algorithm with the aid of slack variables. Numerical results demonstrate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and validate the EE gains of the TRIS transceiver-enabled ISAC system.

Beamforming for Transmissive RIS Transceiver Enabled Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer Systems

This paper investigates a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transceiver-empowered simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system with multiple information decoding (ID) and energy harvesting (EH) users. Under the considered system model, we formulate an optimization problem that maximizes the sum-rate of all ID users via the design of the TRIS transceiver's active beamforming. The design is constrained by per-antenna power limits at the TRIS transceiver and by the minimum harvested energy demand of all EH users. Due to the non-convexity of the objective function and the energy harvesting constraint, the sum-rate problem is difficult to tackle. To solve this challenging optimization problem, by leveraging the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) framework and the majorization-minimization (MM) method, we propose a second-order cone programming (SOCP)-based algorithm. Per-element power constraints introduce a large number of constraints, making the problem considerably more difficult. By applying the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method, we successfully develop an analytical, computationally efficient, and highly parallelizable algorithm to address this challenge. Numerical results are provided to validate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. Furthermore, the low-complexity algorithm significantly reduces computational complexity without performance degradation.

Fair Rate Maximization for Multi-User Multi-Cell MISO Communication Systems via Novel Transmissive RIS Transceiver

This paper explores a multi-cell multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink communication system enabled by a unique transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS) transceiver configuration. Within this system framework, we formulate an optimization problem for the purpose of maximizing the minimum rate of users for each cell via designing the transmit beamforming of the TRIS transceiver, subject to the power constraints of each TRIS transceiver unit. Since the objective function is non-differentiable, the max-min rate problem is difficult to solve. In order to tackle this challenging optimization problem, an efficient low-complexity optimization algorithm is developed. Specifically, the log-form rate function is transformed into a tractable form by employing the fractional programming (FP) methodology. Next, the max-min objective function can be approximated using a differentiable function derived from smooth approximation theory. Moreover, by applying the majorization-minimization (MM) technique and examining the optimality conditions, a solution is proposed that updates all variables analytically without relying on any numerical solvers. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed low-complexity algorithm. Additionally, the algorithm can significantly reduce the computational complexity without performance loss. Furthermore, the simulation results illustrate the clear superiority of the deployment of the TRIS transceiver over the benchmark schemes.

Green Emergency Communications in RIS- and MA-Assisted Multi-UAV SAGINs: A Partially Observable Reinforcement Learning Approach

In post-disaster space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs), terrestrial infrastructure is often impaired, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) must rapidly restore connectivity for mission-critical ground terminals in cluttered non-line-of-sight (NLoS) urban environments. To enhance coverage, UAVs employ movable antennas (MAs), while reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) on surviving high-rises redirect signals. The key challenge is communication-limited partial observability, leaving each UAV with a narrow, fast-changing neighborhood view that destabilizes value estimation. Existing multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) approaches are inadequate--non-communication methods rely on unavailable global critics, heuristic sharing is brittle and redundant, and learnable protocols (e.g., CommNet, DIAL) lose per-neighbor structure and aggravate non-stationarity under tight bandwidth. To address partial observability, we propose a spatiotemporal A2C where each UAV transmits prior-decision messages with local state, a compact policy fingerprint, and a recurrent belief, encoded per neighbor and concatenated. A spatial discount shapes value targets to emphasize local interactions, while analysis under one-hop-per-slot latency explains stable training with delayed views. Experimental results show our policy outperforms IA2C, ConseNet, FPrint, DIAL, and CommNet--achieving faster convergence, higher asymptotic reward, reduced Temporal-Difference(TD)/advantage errors, and a better communication throughput-energy trade-off.

Virtual-Real Collaborated Split Learning via Model Partitioning in IRS-Assisted IoT Networks

This paper investigates a novel computation and communication co-design framework for large-scale split learning in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted internet of things (IoT) networks integrated with digital twin (DT) technique. The considered system consists of a multi-antenna access point (AP), multiple heterogeneous user devices (UDs), and an deployed IRS to enhance both uplink and downlink transmission. The training process of a deep neural network is partitioned between devices and the AP, where a DT replica is activated to replace UDs with insufficient local computation capabilities. We formulate a delay-optimal split learning problem, which optimizes five key variables: layer partitioning points, DT assignment decisions, IRS phase shift matrix, AP downlink power allocation, and DT frequency adjustment, aiming to minimize the overall end-to-end delay under communication and computation. The proposed optimization problem is a highly coupled non-convex mixed-integer problem. Therefore, we solve using an alternating optimization approach combining closed-form updates, semidefinite relaxation (SDR), and low-complexity heuristics. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly reduces training delay compared to conventional baselines and achieves up to 35\% delay improvement, especially under high UD density and stringent power constraints.

Movable Antenna Enhanced Networked Integrated Sensing and Communication System

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key technology for future 6G networks. Most existing studies focus on monostatic and/or bistatic setups with limited coverage and capabilities. Networked ISAC systems with distributed base stations (BSs) can overcome these limitations. Moreover, movable antenna (MA) architectures offer improved ISAC performance over fixed-position antennas (FPAs) by enabling adaptable antenna movement. In this paper, we utilize the MA to promote communication capability with guaranteed sensing performance via jointly designing beamforming, power allocation, receiving filters and position configuration of transmit/receive MA towards maximizing the sum rate for both downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) users. The optimization problem is highly difficult due to the unique channel model derived from the position coefficient of the MA. To resolve this challenge, via leveraging the cutting-the-edge majorization-minimization (MM) method, we develop an efficient solution that optimizes all variables via convex optimization techniques. Extensive simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms and demonstrate the substantial performance promotion by deploying the MA framework in the networked ISAC system.

RIS Codebook Index Assignment under Imperfect Control Links Using TSP-Inspired Optimization

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) promise transformative gains in wireless communications by enabling programmable control of the propagation environment through discrete phase configurations. In practical deployments, the control of RIS phase states is typically managed using finite codebooks, with configuration indices transmitted over low latency, yet imperfect, wireless feedback channels. Even rare feedback bit errors can lead to significant mismatches between intended and applied RIS states, degrading system performance. This paper addresses the challenge of robust RIS codebook index assignment by formulating it as a combinatorial optimization problem, equivalent to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), where codewords are "cities" and edge weights reflect SNR degradation under codeword confusion. A novel three-phase heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve this, consisting of a provision phase, a shotgun phase, and a fuzzy concatenation phase. Simulation results show that the method outperforms conventional indexing strategies and achieves near-optimal robustness to index errors, while also being scalable and hardwareagnostic for real time deployment. Future work includes multiple bits error correction and online adaptive mapping for time varying channels.

Exploiting Movable Antennas in NOMA Networks: Joint Beamforming, Power Allocation and Antenna Position Optimization

This paper investigates the movable antenna (MA)- assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network to maximize system throughput. In the considered scenario, both the base station (BS) and users are equipped with MA, and a predetermined successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order is adopted. Based on the field-response channel model, we formulate a complex, non-convex problem to jointly optimize the BS beamforming, power allocation, and MA positions at both the transmitter and receivers. To address this, we propose an efficient algorithm based on an alternating optimization (AO) framework, which decomposes the original problem into three distinct subproblems. By employing sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques, the non-convex constraints within each subproblem are transformed into tractable. This methodology ensures the algorithm converges to a stable, locally optimal solution. Numerical results validate that the proposed system, which fully exploits the degrees of freedom from antenna mobility at both ends, significantly outperforms benchmarks in terms of throughput.

Vehicular Multi-Tier Distributed Computing with Hybrid THz-RF Transmission in Satellite-Terrestrial Integrated Networks

In this paper, we propose a Satellite-Terrestrial Integrated Network (STIN) assisted vehicular multi-tier distributed computing (VMDC) system leveraging hybrid terahertz (THz) and radio frequency (RF) communication technologies. Task offloading for satellite edge computing is enabled by THz communication using the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technique. For terrestrial edge computing, we employ non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and vehicle clustering to realize task offloading. We formulate a non-convex optimization problem aimed at maximizing computation efficiency by jointly optimizing bandwidth allocation, task allocation, subchannel-vehicle matching and power allocation. To address this non-convex optimization problem, we decompose the original problem into four sub-problems and solve them using an alternating iterative optimization approach. For the subproblem of task allocation, we solve it by linear programming. To solve the subproblem of sub-channel allocation, we exploit many-to-one matching theory to obtain the result. The subproblem of bandwidth allocation of OFDMA and the subproblem of power allocation of NOMA are solved by quadratic transformation method. Finally, the simulation results show that our proposed scheme significantly enhances the computation efficiency of the STIN-based VMDC system compared with the benchmark schemes.

Throughput Maximization for UAV-enabled Integrated Periodic Sensing and Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is expected to revolutionize the existing integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system and promise a more flexible joint design. Nevertheless, the existing works on ISAC mainly focus on exploring the performance of both functionalities simultaneously during the entire considered period, which may ignore the practical asymmetric sensing and communication requirements. In particular, always forcing sensing along with communication may make it is harder to balance between these two functionalities due to shared spectrum resources and limited transmit power. To address this issue, we propose a new integrated periodic sensing and communication mechanism for the UAV-enabled ISAC system to provide a more flexible trade-off between two integrated functionalities. Specifically, the system achievable rate is maximized via jointly optimizing UAV trajectory, user association, target sensing selection, and transmit beamforming, while meeting the sensing frequency and beam pattern gain requirement for the given targets. Despite that this problem is highly non-convex and involves closely coupled integer variables, we derive the closed-form optimal beamforming vector to dramatically reduce the complexity of beamforming design, and present a tight lower bound of the achievable rate to facilitate UAV trajectory design. Based on the above results, we propose a penalty-based algorithm to efficiently solve the considered problem. The optimal achievable rate and the optimal UAV location are analyzed under a special case of infinity number of antennas. Furthermore, we prove the structural symmetry between the optimal solutions in different ISAC frames without location constraints and propose an efficient algorithm for solving the problem with location constraints.

Distributed Massive MIMO-Aided Task Offloading in Satellite-Terrestrial Integrated Multi-Tier VEC Networks

This paper proposes a distributed massive multiple input multiple-output (DM-MIMO) aided multi-tier vehicular edge computing (VEC) system. In particular, each vehicle terminal (VT) offloads its computational task to the roadside unit (RSU) by orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), which can be computed locally at the RSU and offloaded to the central processing unit (CPU) via massive satellite access points (SAPs) for remote computation. By considering the partial task offloading model, we consider the joint optimization of the task offloading, subchannel allocation and precoding optimization to minimize the total cost in terms of total delay and energy consumption. To solve this non-convex problem, we transform the original problem into three sub-problems and use the alternate optimization algorithm to solve it. First, we transform the subcarrier allocation problem of discrete variables into convex optimization problem of continuous variables. Then, we use multiple quadratic transformations and Lagrange multiplier method to transform the non-convex subproblem of optimizing precoding vectors into a convex problem, while the task offloading subproblem is a convex problem. Given the subcarrier and the task allocation and precoding result, we finally find the joint optimized results by iterative optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is superior to other benchmarks.

Digital Twin-Assisted Federated Learning with Blockchain in Multi-tier Computing Systems

In Industry 4.0 systems, a considerable number of resource-constrained Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices engage in frequent data interactions due to the necessity for model training, which gives rise to concerns pertaining to security and privacy. In order to address these challenges, this paper considers a digital twin (DT) and blockchain-assisted federated learning (FL) scheme. To facilitate the FL process, we initially employ fog devices with abundant computational capabilities to generate DT for resource-constrained edge devices, thereby aiding them in local training. Subsequently, we formulate an FL delay minimization problem for FL, which considers both of model transmission time and synchronization time, also incorporates cooperative jamming to ensure secure synchronization of DT. To address this non-convex optimization problem, we propose a decomposition algorithm. In particular, we introduce upper limits on the local device training delay and the effects of aggregation jamming as auxiliary variables, thereby transforming the problem into a convex optimization problem that can be decomposed for independent solution. Finally, a blockchain verification mechanism is employed to guarantee the integrity of the model uploading throughout the FL process and the identities of the participants. The final global model is obtained from the verified local and global models within the blockchain through the application of deep learning techniques. The efficacy of our proposed cooperative interference-based FL process has been verified through numerical analysis, which demonstrates that the integrated DT blockchain-assisted FL scheme significantly outperforms the benchmark schemes in terms of execution time, block optimization, and accuracy.

Design of Two-Level Incentive Mechanisms for Hierarchical Federated Learning

Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) is a distributed machine learning paradigm tailored for multi-tiered computation architectures, which supports massive access of devices' models simultaneously. To enable efficient HFL, it is crucial to design suitable incentive mechanisms to ensure that devices actively participate in local training. However, there are few studies on incentive mechanism design for HFL. In this paper, we design two-level incentive mechanisms for the HFL with a two-tiered computing structure to encourage the participation of entities in each tier in the HFL training. In the lower-level game, we propose a coalition formation game to joint optimize the edge association and bandwidth allocation problem, and obtain efficient coalition partitions by the proposed preference rule, which can be proven to be stable by exact potential game. In the upper-level game, we design the Stackelberg game algorithm, which not only determines the optimal number of edge aggregations for edge servers to maximize their utility, but also optimize the unit reward provided for the edge aggregation performance to ensure the interests of cloud servers. Furthermore, numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithms can achieve better performance than the benchmark schemes.

Multi-Tier Computing-Enabled Digital Twin in 6G Networks

Digital twin (DT) is the recurrent and common feature in discussions about future technologies, bringing together advanced communication, computation, and artificial intelligence, to name a few. In the context of Industry 4.0, industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and healthcare are rapidly adopting DT-based development. The main challenges to date have been the high demands on communication and computing resources, as well as privacy and security concerns, arising from the large volumes of data exchanges. To achieve low latency and high security services in the emerging DT, multi-tier computing has been proposed by combining edge/fog computing and cloud computing. Specifically, low latency data transmission, efficient resource allocation, and validated security strategies of multi-tier computing systems are used to solve the operational problems of the DT system. In this paper, we introduce the architecture and applications of DT using examples from manufacturing, the Internet-of-Vehicles and healthcare. At the same time, the architecture and technology of multi-tier computing systems are studied to support DT. This paper will provide valuable reference and guidance for the theory, algorithms, and applications in collaborative multi-tier computing and DT.

Device Scheduling for Relay-assisted Over-the-Air Aggregation in Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) leverages data distributed at the edge of the network to enable intelligent applications. The efficiency of FL can be improved by using over-the-air computation (AirComp) technology in the process of gradient aggregation. In this paper, we propose a relay-assisted large-scale FL framework, and investigate the device scheduling problem in relay-assisted FL systems under the constraints of power consumption and mean squared error (MSE). we formulate a joint device scheduling, and power allocation problem to maximize the number of scheduled devices. We solve the resultant non-convex optimization problem by transforming the optimization problem into multiple sparse optimization problems. By the proposed device scheduling algorithm, these sparse sub-problems are solved and the maximum number of federated learning edge devices is obtained. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme as compared with other benchmark schemes.

6G Network AI Architecture for Everyone-Centric Customized Services

Mobile communication standards were developed for enhancing transmission and network performance by using more radio resources and improving spectrum and energy efficiency. How to effectively address diverse user requirements and guarantee everyone's Quality of Experience (QoE) remains an open problem. The Sixth Generation (6G) mobile systems will solve this problem by utilizing heterogenous network resources and pervasive intelligence to support everyone-centric customized services anywhere and anytime. In this article, we first coin the concept of Service Requirement Zone (SRZ) on the user side to characterize and visualize the integrated service requirements and preferences of specific tasks of individual users. On the system side, we further introduce the concept of User Satisfaction Ratio (USR) to evaluate the system's overall service ability of satisfying a variety of tasks with different SRZs. Then, we propose a network Artificial Intelligence (AI) architecture with integrated network resources and pervasive AI capabilities for supporting customized services with guaranteed QoEs. Finally, extensive simulations show that the proposed network AI architecture can consistently offer a higher USR performance than the cloud AI and edge AI architectures with respect to different task scheduling algorithms, random service requirements, and dynamic network conditions.

On the Performance of RIS-Aided Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave Transmission

In this paper, we investigate a state-of-the-art reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted spatial scattering modulation (SSM) scheme for millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, where a more practical scenario that the RIS is near the transmitter while the receiver is far from RIS is considered. To this end, the line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS links are utilized in the transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels, respectively. By employing the maximum likelihood detector at the receiver, the conditional pairwise error probability (CPEP) expression for the RIS-SSM scheme is derived under the two scenarios that the received beam demodulation is correct or not. Furthermore, the union upper bound of average bit error probability (ABEP) is obtained based on the CPEP expression. Finally, the derivation results are exhaustively validated by the Monte Carlo simulations.

RIS-Aided Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave MIMO Transmissions

This paper investigates the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted spatial scattering modulation (SSM) scheme for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths are respectively considered in the transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels. Based on the maximum likelihood detector, the conditional pairwise error probability (CPEP) expression for the RIS-SSM scheme is derived under the two cases of received beam correct and demodulation error. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form expressions of the unconditional pairwise error probability (UPEP) by employing two different methods: the probability density function and the moment-generating function expressions with a descending order of scatterer gains. To provide more useful insights, we derive the asymptotic UPEP and the diversity gain of the RIS-SSM scheme in the high SNR region. Depending on UPEP and the corresponding Euclidean distance, we get the union upper bound of the average bit error probability (ABEP). A new framework for ergodic capacity analysis is also provided to acquire the proposed system's effective capacity. Finally, all derivation results are validated via extensive Monte Carlo simulations, revealing that the proposed RIS-SSM scheme outperforms the benchmarks in terms of reliability.
