Like-Charge Colloid-Polyelectrolyte Complexation

We investigate the complexation of a highly charged sphere with a long flexible polyelectrolyte, \textit{both negatively charged} in salt free environment. Electroneutrality is insured by the presence of divalent counterions. Using molecular dynamics (MD) within the framework of the primitive model, we consider different Coulomb coupling regimes. At strong Coulomb coupling we find that the adsorbed chain is always confined to the colloidal surface but forms different conformations that depend on the linear charge density of the chain. A mechanism involving the polyelectrolyte \textit{overcharging} is proposed to explain these structures. At intermediate Coulomb coupling, the chain conformation starts to become three-dimensional, and we observe multilayering of the highly charged chain while for lower charge density the chain wraps around the colloid. At weak Coulomb coupling, corresponding to an aqueous solvent, we still find like-charge complexation. In this latter case the chain conformation exhibits loops.

Charge inversion in colloidal systems

We investigate spherical macroions in the strong Coulomb coupling regime within the primitive model in salt-free environment. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to elucidate the effect of $discrete$ macroion charge distribution on charge inversion. A systematic comparison is made with the charge inversion obtained in the conventional continuous charge distribution. Furthermore the effect of multivalent counterions is reported.

Conformation of a Polyelectrolyte Complexed to a Like-Charged Colloid

We report results from a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation on the conformations of a long flexible polyelectrolyte complexed to a charged sphere, \textit{both negatively charged}, in the presence of neutralizing counterions in the strong Coulomb coupling regime. The structure of this complex is very sensitive to the charge density of the polyelectrolyte. For a fully charged polyelectrolyte the polymer forms a dense two-dimensional "disk", whereas for a partially charged polyelectrolyte the monomers are spread over the colloidal surface. A mechanism involving the \textit{overcharging} of the polyelectrolyte by counterions is proposed to explain the observed conformations.

Ground state of two unlike charged colloids: An analogy with ionic bonding

In this letter, we study the ground state of two spherical macroions of identical radius, but asymmetric bare charge ((Q_{A}>Q_{B})). Electroneutrality of the system is insured by the presence of the surrounding divalent counterions. Using Molecular Dynamics simulations within the framework of the primitive model, we show that the ground state of such a system consists of an overcharged and an undercharged colloid. For a given macroion separation the stability of these ionized-like states is a function of the difference ((\sqrt{N_{A}}-\sqrt{N_{B}})) of neutralizing counterions (N_{A}) and (N_{B}). Furthermore the degree of ionization, or equivalently, the degree of overcharging, is also governed by the distance separation of the macroions. The natural analogy with ionic bonding is briefly discussed.

Strong electrostatic interactions in spherical colloidal systems

We investigate spherical macroions in the strong Coulomb coupling regime within the primitive model in salt-free environment. We first show that the ground state of an isolated colloid is naturally overcharged by simple electrostatic arguments illustrated by the Gillespie rule. We furthermore demonstrate that in the strong Coulomb coupling this mechanism leads to ionized states and thus to long range attractions between like-charged spheres. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study in detail the counterion distribution for one and two highly charged colloids for the ground state as well as for finite temperatures. We compare our results in terms of a simple version of a Wigner crystal theory and find excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement.

Effect of colloidal charge discretization in the primitive model

The effect of fixed discrete colloidal charges in the primitive model is investigated for spherical macroions. Instead of considering a central bare charge, as it is traditionally done, we distribute \textit{discrete} charges randomly on the sphere. We use molecular dynamics simulations to study this effect on various properties such as overcharging, counterion distribution and diffusion. In the vicinity of the colloid surface the electrostatic potential may considerably differ from the one obtained with a central charge. In the strong Coulomb coupling, we showed that the colloidal charge discretization qualitatively influences the counterion distribution and leads to a strong colloidal charge-counterion pair association. However, we found that \textit{charge inversion} still persists even if strong pair association is observed.

Strong Attraction between Charged Spheres due to Metastable Ionized States

We report a mechanism which can lead to long range attractions between like-charged spherical macroions, stemming from the existence of metastable ionized states. We show that the ground state of a single highly charged colloid plus a few excess counterions is overcharged. For the case of two highly charged macroions in their neutralizing divalent counterion solution we demonstrate that, in the regime of strong Coulomb coupling, the counterion clouds are very likely to be unevenly distributed, leading to one overcharged and one undercharged macroion. This long-living metastable configuration in turn leads to a long range Coulomb attraction.

Cross-linking of micelles by gemini surfactants

We investigate the effects of gemini surfactants, telechelic chain and lipids on the nature of micelles formed by conventional single-tail surfactants in water by carrying out Monte Carlo simulations. In a mixture of gemini and single-tail surfactants in water we find direct evidence of micelles of predominantly single-tail surfactants some of which are dynamically cross-linked by gemini surfactants when the concentrations of the geminis is only a few mole percent and their spacers are {\it hydrophilic}. In contrast, mixtures of lipids and single-tail surfactants in water form only isolated micelles, each consisting of a mixture of both species, without cross-links.

Stress Relaxation of Entangled Polymer Networks

The non-linear stress-strain relation for crosslinked polymer networks is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Previously we demonstrated the importance of trapped entanglements in determining the elastic and relaxational properties of networks. Here we present new results for the stress versus strain for both dry and swollen networks. Models which limit the fluctuations of the network strands like the tube model are shown to describe the stress for both elongation and compression. For swollen networks, the total modulus is found to decrease like (V_0/V)^{2/3} and goes to the phantom model result only for short strand networks.

Self-similar chain conformations in polymer gels

We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the swelling of randomly end-cross-linked polymer networks in good solvent conditions. We find that the equilibrium degree of swelling saturates at Q_eq = N_e**(3/5) for mean strand lengths N_s exceeding the melt entanglement length N_e. The internal structure of the network strands in the swollen state is characterized by a new exponent nu=0.72. Our findings are in contradiction to de Gennes' c*-theorem, which predicts Q_eq proportional N_s**(4/5) and nu=0.588. We present a simple Flory argument for a self-similar structure of mutually interpenetrating network strands, which yields nu=7/10 and otherwise recovers the classical Flory-Rehner theory. In particular, Q_eq = N_e**(3/5), if N_e is used as effective strand length.

What is the Entanglement Length in a Polymer Melt ?

We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of very long model polymer chains analyzed by various experimentally relevant techniques. The segment motion of the chains is found to be in very good agreement with the repatation model. We also calculated the plateau-modulus G_N. The predicitions of the entanglement length N_e from G_N and from the mean square displacements of the chains segments disagree by a factor of about 2.2(2), indicating an error in the prefactor in the standard formula for G_N. We show that recent neutron spin echo measurements were carried out for chain lengths which are too small for a correct determination of N_e.

Polyelectrolytes in Solution - Recent Computer Simulations

We present a short overview over recent MD simulations of systems of fully flexible polyelectrolyte chains with explicitly treated counter ions using the full Coulomb potential. The main emphasis is given on the conformational properties of the polymers, with a short discussion on counter ion condensation.

Strongly Charged, Flexible Polyelectrolytes in Poor Solvents -- Molecular Dynamics Simulations

We present a set of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of strongly charged, flexible polyelectrolyte chains under poor solvent conditions in a salt free solution. Structural properties of the chains and of the solutions are reported. By varying the polymer density and the electrostatic interaction strength we study the crossover from a dominating electrostatic interaction to the regime of strong screening, where the hydrophobic interactions dominate. During the crossover a multitude of structures is observed. In the limit of low polymer density strongly stretched, necklace like conformations are found. In the opposite limit of high polymer density which is equivalent to strongly screened electrostatic interactions, we find that the chains are extremely collapsed, however we observe no agglomeration or phase separation. The investigations show that the density of free charges is one of the relevant parameters which rules the behavior of the system and hence should be used as a parameter to explain experimental results.

Chain Diffusion in Lamellar Block Copolymers

Diffusion of symmetric diblock copolymer chains in macroscopically oriented lamellar block copolymers are studied in a molecular dynamics simulation. Results for diffusion constant both parallel $D_\parallel$ and perpendicular $D_\perp$ to the lamellar planes are compared to results in the disordered one phase region. For diblocks of length N=40 (1.1 N_e) and $100 (3N_e)$, where $N_e$ is the entanglement length of a homopolymer melt at the same density, $D_\parallel$ is nearly independent of $χ$, while $D_\perp$ is strongly suppressed as $χ$ is increased. These results are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the Rouse model. The isotropic diffusion constant of quenched disordered systems is approximated fairly well by $(2D_\parallel+D_\perp)/3$ of the corresponding lamellar system.
