Magnon bound states vs. anyonic Majorana excitations in the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound ($B=7-10$ T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian nature with a fractional quantum number. To discriminate between these scenarios a detailed investigation of excitations over a wide field-temperature phase diagram is essential. Here we present Raman spectroscopic data revealing low-energy quasiparticles emerging out of a continuum of fractionalized excitations at intermediate fields, which are contrasted by conventional spin-wave excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticles suggests the formation of bound states out of fractionalized excitations.

Giant thermal magnetoconductivity in CrCl$_3$ and a general model for spin-phonon scattering

Insulating quantum magnets lie at the forefront both of fundamental research into quantum matter and of technological exploitation in the increasingly applied field of spintronics. In this context, the magnetic thermal transport is a particularly sensitive probe of the elementary spin and exotic topological excitations in unconventional magnetic insulators. However, magnetic contributions to heat conduction are invariably intertwined with lattice contributions, and thus the issue of spin-phonon coupling in determining the spin and thermal transport properties becomes more important with emergent topological magnetic system. Here we report the observation of an anomalously strong enhancement of the thermal conductivity, occurring at all relevant temperatures, in the layered honeycomb material CrCl$_3$ in the presence of an applied magnetic field. Away from the magnetically ordered phase at low temperatures and small fields, there is no coherent spin contribution to the heat conduction, and hence the effect must be caused by a strong suppression of the phonon thermal conductivity due to magnetic fluctuations, which are in turn suppressed by the field. We build an empirical model for the thermal conductivity of CrCl$_3$ within a formalism assuming an independently determined number of spin-flip processes and an efficiency of the phonon scattering events they mediate. By extracting the intrinsic phonon thermal conductivity we obtain a quantitative description at all fields and temperatures and demonstrate that the scattering efficiency is entirely independent of the field. In this way we use CrCl$_3$ as a model system to understand the interactions between spin and phonon excitations in the context of thermal transport. We anticipate that the completely general framework we introduce will have broad implications for the interpretation of transport phenomena in magnetic quantum materials.

Magnetic field-dependent low-energy magnon dynamics in $α$-RuCl3

Revealing the spin excitations of complex quantum magnets is key to developing a minimal model that explains the underlying magnetic correlations in the ground state. We investigate the low-energy magnons in $α$-RuCl$_3$ by combining time-domain terahertz spectroscopy under an external magnetic field and model Hamiltonian calculations. We observe two absorption peaks around 2.0 and 2.4 meV, which we attribute to zone-center spin waves. Using linear spin-wave theory with only nearest-neighbor terms of the exchange couplings, we calculate the antiferromagnetic resonance frequencies and reveal their dependence on an external field applied parallel to the nearest-neighbor Ru-Ru bonds. We find that the magnon behavior in an applied magnetic field can be understood only by including an off-diagonal $Γ$ exchange term to the minimal Heisenberg-Kitaev model. Such an anisotropic exchange interaction that manifests itself as a result of strong spin-orbit coupling can naturally account for the observed mixing of the modes at higher fields strengths.

Exotic low-energy excitations emergent in the random Kitaev magnet Cu$_2$IrO$_3$

We report on magnetization $M(H)$, dc/ac magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements of the Kitaev honeycomb iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_2$ with quenched disorder. In spite of the chemical disorders, we find no indication of spin glass down to 260~mK from the $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and $μ$SR data. Furthermore, a persistent spin dynamics observed by the zero-field muon spin relaxation evidences an absence of static magnetism. The remarkable observation is a scaling relation of $χ[H,T]$ and $M[H,T]$ in $H/T$ with the scaling exponent $α=0.26-0.28$, expected from bond randomness. However, $C_{\mathrm{m}}[H,T]/T$ disobeys the predicted universal scaling law, pointing towards the presence of low-lying excitations in addition to random singlets. Our results signify an intriguing role of quenched disorder in a Kitaev spin system in creating low-energy excitations possibly pertaining to Z$_2$ fluxes.

Anomalous thermal conductivity and magnetic torque response in the honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

We report on the unusual behavior of the in-plane thermal conductivity ($κ$) and torque ($τ$) response in the Kitaev-Heisenberg material $α$-RuCl$_3$. $κ$ shows a striking enhancement with linear growth beyond H = 7 T, where magnetic order disappears, while $τ$ for both of the in-plane symmetry directions shows an anomaly at the same field. The temperature- and field-dependence of $κ$ are far more complex than conventional phonon and magnon contributions, and require us to invoke the presence of unconventional spin excitations whose properties are characteristic of a field-induced spin-liquid phase related to the enigmatic physics of the Kitaev model in an applied magnetic field

Incarnation of Majorana Fermions in Kitaev Quantum Spin Lattice

Kitaev quantum spin liquid is a topological magnetic quantum state characterized by Majorana fermions of fractionalized spin excitations, which are identical to their own antiparticles. Here, we demonstrate emergence of Majorana fermions thermally fractionalized in the Kitaev honeycomb spin lattice α-RuCl3. The specific heat data unveil the characteristic two-stage release of magnetic entropy involving localized and itinerant Majorana fermions. The inelastic neutron scattering results further corroborate these two distinct fermions by exhibiting quasielastic excitations at low energies around the Brillouin zone center and Y-shaped magnetic continuum at high energies, which are evident for the ferromagnetic Kitaev model. Our results provide an opportunity to build a unified conceptual framework of fractionalized excitations, applicable also for the quantum Hall states, superconductors, and frustrated magnets.

Doping effects on charge density instability in non-centrosymmetric PbxTaSe2

We report on the investigation of vibrational and electronic properties of the Pb doped dichalcogenide PbxTaSe2 using Raman scattering experiments. We observe a marked variation of the main vibrational modes with Pb concentration x. The concentration dependence of the vibrational modes resembles the dependence of the vibrational modes in TaSe2 on the number of crystallographic layers along the c axis direction [1]. The temperature and polarization dependence of Raman spectra of PbxTaSe2 revealed additional broad modes in the low frequency regime which are discussed in context of remnant charge density wave, induced disorder, or PbSe phase formed in the interface of Pb and TaSe2 layers.

Lattice and orbital fluctuations in TiPO4

In the s = 1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain material TiPO4 the formation of a spin gap takes place in a two step process with two characteristic temperatures, T*=111 K and TSP=74 K. We observe an unusual lattice dynamics over a large temperature regime as well as evidence for an orbital instability preceding the spin-Peierls transition. We relate different intrachain exchange interactions of the high temperature compared to the spin-Peierls phase to a modification of the orbital ordering pattern. In particular, our observation of a high energy excitation of mixed electronic and lattice origin suggests an exotic dimerization process different from other spin-Peierls materials.

Softened magnetic excitations in the s = 3/2 distorted triangular antiferromagnet alpha-CaCr2O4

The spin dynamics and magnetic excitations of the slightly distorted triangular s = 3/2 system alpha-CaCr2O4 are investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance (ESR) to elucidate its peculiar magnetic properties. Two-magnon excitations in circular RL symmetry show a multi-maximum structure with a dominant spectral weight at low energies. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is described by a critical broadening DeltaHpp(T) ~ (T - T_N)^{-p} with the exponent p = 0.30(3) - 0.38(5) for temperatures above T_N = 42.6 K. The exponent is much smaller than that of other s = 3/2 triangular lattices. This is ascribed to soft roton-like modes, indicative of the instability of a helical 120° phase. As an origin we discuss a complex spin topology formed by four inequivalent nearest neighbor and sizable next-nearest neighbor interactions.

Coupled spin-lattice fluctuations in a compound with orbital degrees of freedom: the Cr based dimer system Sr3Cr2O8

We report on an extended fluctuation regime in the spin dimer system Sr3Cr2O8 based on anomalies in Raman active phonons and magnetic scattering. The compound has two characteristic temperatures, TS = 275 K, related to a Jahn-Teller transition with structural distortions and orbital ordering and a second, T*= 150 K, which is due to further changes in the orbital sector. Below TS quasielastic scattering marks strong fluctuations and in addition phonon anomalies are observed. For temperatures below T* we observe an exponential decrease of one phonon linewidth and determine a gap of the orbital excitations. At low temperatures the observation of two- and three-magnon scattering allows the determination of the spin excitation gap.

Interplay of electronic correlations and lattice instabilities in BaVS3

The quasi-one-dimensional metallic system BaVS3 with a metal-insulator transition at T_MI=70 K shows large changes of the optical phonon spectrum, a central peak, and an electronic Raman scattering continuum that evolve in a three-step process. Motivated by the observation of a strongly fluctuating precursor state at high temperatures and orbital ordering and a charge gap at low temperatures we suggest a concerted action of the orbital, electronic, and lattice subsystems dominated by electronic correlations.

Anomalous frequency and intensity scaling of collective and local modes in a coupled spin tetrahedron system

We report on the magnetic excitation spectrum of the coupled spin tetrahedral system Cu$_{2}$Te$_{2}$O$_{5}$Cl$_{2}$ using Raman scattering on single crystals. The transition to an ordered state at T$_{N}^{Cl}$=18.2 K evidenced from thermodynamic data leads to the evolution of distinct low-energy magnetic excitations superimposed by a broad maximum. These modes are ascribed to magnons with different degree of localization and a two-magnon continuum. Two of the modes develop a substantial energy shift with decreasing temperature similar to the order parameter of other Neel ordered systems. The other two modes show only a negligible temperature dependence and dissolve above the ordering temperature in a continuum of excitations at finite energies. These observations point to a delicate interplay of magnetic inter- and intra-tetrahedra degrees of freedom and an importance of singlet fluctuations in describing a spin dynamics.
