Rudin-Shapiro function along irreducible polynomials over finite fields

Let $q$ be an odd prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of $q$ elements. We define the Rudin-Shapiro function $R$ on monic polynomials $f=t^n+f_{n-1}t^{n-1}+\dots + f_0\in\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ by $$ R(f)=\sum_{i=1}^{n-1}f_if_{i-1}. $$ We investigate the distribution of the Rudin-Shapiro function along irreducible polynomials. We show that the number of irreducible polynomials $f$ with $R(f)=γ$ for any $γ\in\mathbb{F}_q$ is asymptotically $q^{n-1}/n$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$.

Smooth polynomials with several prescribed coefficients

Let $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ be the polynomial ring over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of $q$ elements. A polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ is called $m$-smooth (or $m$-friable) if all its irreducible factors are of degree at most $m$. In this paper, we investigate the distribution of $m$-smooth (or $m$-friable) polynomials with prescribed coefficients. Our technique is based on character sum estimates on smooth (friable) polynomials, Bourgains's argument (2015) applied for polynomials by Ha (2016) and on double character sums on smooth (friable) polynomials.

On the Dynamical System Generated by the Möbius Transformation at Smooth Times

We study the distribution of the sequence of the first $N$ elements of the discrete dynamical system generated by the Möbius transformation $x \mapsto (αx + β)/(γx + δ)$ over a finite field of $p$ elements at the moments of time that correspond to $Q$-smooth numbers, that is, to numbers composed out of primes up to $Q$. In particular, we obtain nontrivial estimates of exponential sums with such sequences.

Number of characteristic polynomials of matrices with bounded height

We consider the set $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb{Z}; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of distinct irreducible characteristic polynomials which correspond to these matrices and thus on the number of distinct eigenvalues of these matrices. In particular, we improve some results of A.~Abrams, Z.~Landau, J.~Pommersheim and N.~Srivastava (2022).

Distribution of recursive matrix pseudorandom number generator modulo prime powers

Given a matrix $A\in \mathrm{GL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$. We study the pseudorandomness of vectors $\mathbf{u}_n$ generated by a linear recurrent relation of the form $$ \mathbf{u}_{n+1} \equiv A \mathbf{u}_n \pmod {p^t}, \qquad n = 0, 1, \ldots, $$ modulo $p^t$ with a fixed prime $p$ and sufficiently large integer $t \geq 1$. We study such sequences over very short segments of length which is not accessible via previously used methods. Our technique is based on the method of N. M. Korobov (1972) of estimating double Weyl sums and a fully explicit form of the Vinogradov mean value theorem due to K. Ford (2002). This is combined with some ideas from the work of I. E. Shparlinski (1978) which allows to construct polynomial representations of the coordinates of $\mathbf{u}_n$ and control the $p$-adic orders of their coefficients in polynomial representation.

Character sums over sparse elements of finite fields

We estimate mixed character sums of polynomial values over elements of a finite field $\mathbb F_{q^r}$ with sparse representations in a fixed ordered basis over the subfield $\mathbb F_q$. First we use a combination of the inclusion-exclusion principle with bounds on character sums over linear subspaces to get nontrivial bounds for large $q$. Then we focus on the particular case $q=2$, which is more intricate. The bounds depend on certain natural restrictions. We also provide families of examples for which the conditions of our bounds are fulfilled. In particular, we completely classify all monomials as argument of the additive character for which our bound is applicable. Moreover, we also show that it is applicable for a large family of rational functions, which includes all reciprocal monomials.

On divisors of sums of polynomials

Let $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ be sets of polynomials of degree $n$ over a finite field. We show, that if $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are large enough, then $A+B$ has an irreducible divisor of large degree for some $A\in\mathcal{A}$ and $B\in \mathcal{B}$.

On digits of Mersenne numbers

Motivated by recently developed interest to the distribution of $q$-ary digits of Mersenne numbers $M_p = 2^p-1$, where $p$ is prime, we estimate rational exponential sums with $M_p$, $p \leq X$, modulo a large power of a fixed odd prime $q$. In turn this immediately implies the normality of strings of $q$-ary digits amongst about $(\log X)^{3/2+o(1)}$ rightmost digits of $M_p$, $p \leq X$. Previous results imply this only for about $(\log X)^{1+o(1)}$ rightmost digits.

Multiplicative and linear dependence in finite fields and on elliptic curves modulo primes

For positive integers $K$ and $L$, we introduce and study the notion of $K$-multiplicative dependence over the algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$ of a finite prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, as well as $L$-linear dependence of points on elliptic curves in reduction modulo primes. One of our main results shows that, given non-zero rational functions $φ_1,\ldots,φ_m, \varrho_1,\ldots,\varrho_n\in\mathbb{Q}(X)$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over the integers $\mathbb{Z}$, for any sufficiently large prime $p$, for all but finitely many $α\in\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$, at most one of the following two can happen: $φ_1(α),\ldots,φ_m(α)$ are $K$-multiplicatively dependent or the points $(\varrho_1(α),\cdot), \ldots,(\varrho_n(α),\cdot)$ are $L$-linearly dependent on the reduction of $E$ modulo $p$. As one of our main tools, we prove a general statement about the intersection of an irreducible curve in the split semiabelian variety $\mathbb{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^m \times E^n$ with the algebraic subgroups of codimension at least $2$. As an application of our results, we improve a result of M. C. Chang and extend a result of J. F. Voloch about elements of large order in finite fields in some special cases.

Pseudorandom sequences derived from automatic sequences

Many automatic sequences, such as the Thue-Morse sequence or the Rudin-Shapiro sequence, have some desirable features of pseudorandomness such as a large linear complexity and a small well-distribution measure. However, they also have some disastrous properties in view of certain applications. For example, the majority of possible binary patterns never appears in automatic sequences and their correlation measure of order 2 is extremely large. Certain subsequences, such as automatic sequences along squares, may keep the good properties of the original sequence but avoid the bad ones. In this survey we investigate properties of pseudorandomness and non-randomness of automatic sequences and their subsequences and present results on their behaviour under several measures of pseudorandomness including linear complexity, correlation measure of order $k$, expansion complexity and normality. We also mention some analogs for finite fields.

On the distribution of the Rudin-Shapiro function for finite fields

Let $q=p^r$ be the power of a prime $p$ and $(β_1,\ldots ,β_r)$ be an ordered basis of $\mathbb{F}_q$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$. For $$ ξ=\sum\limits_{j=1}^r x_jβ_j\in \mathbb{F}_q \quad \mbox{with digits }x_j\in\mathbb{F}_p, $$ we define the Rudin-Shapiro function $R$ on $\mathbb{F}_q$ by $$ R(ξ)=\sum\limits_{i=1}^{r-1} x_ix_{i+1}, \quad ξ\in \mathbb{F}_q. $$ For a non-constant polynomial $f(X)\in \mathbb{F}_q[X]$ and $c\in \mathbb{F}_p$ we study the number of solutions $ξ\in \mathbb{F}_q$ of $R(f(ξ))=c$. If the degree $d$ of $f(X)$ is fixed, $r\ge 6$ and $p\rightarrow \infty$, the number of solutions is asymptotically $p^{r-1}$ for any $c$. The proof is based on the Hooley-Katz Theorem.

On functions with the maximal number of bent components

A function $F:\mathbb{F}_2^n\rightarrow \mathbb{F}_2^n$, $n=2m$, can have at most $2^n-2^m$ bent component functions. Trivial examples are obtained as $F(x) = (f_1(x),\ldots,f_m(x),a_1(x),\ldots, a_m(x))$, where $\tilde{F}(x)=(f_1(x),\ldots,f_m(x))$ is a vectorial bent function from $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ to $\mathbb{F}_2^m$, and $a_i$, $1\le i\le m$, are affine Boolean functions. A class of nontrivial examples is given in univariate form with the functions $F(x) = x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(Λ(x))$, where $Λ$ is a linearized permutation of $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}$. In the first part of this article it is shown that plateaued functions with $2^n-2^m$ bent components can have nonlinearity at most $2^{n-1}-2^{\lfloor\frac{n+m}{2}\rfloor}$, a bound which is attained by the example $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(x)$, $1\le r<m$ (Pott et al. 2018). This partially solves Question 5 in Pott et al. 2018. We then analyse the functions of the form $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(Λ(x))$. We show that for odd $m$, only $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(x)$, $1\le r<m$, has maximal nonlinearity, whereas there are more of them for even $m$, of which we present one more infinite class explicitly. In detail, we investigate Walsh spectrum, differential spectrum and their relations for the functions $x^{2^r}{\rm Tr^n_m}(Λ(x))$. Our results indicate that this class contains many nontrivial EA-equivalence classes of functions with the maximal number of bent components, if $m$ is even, several with maximal possible nonlinearity.

Dynamical irreducibility of polynomials modulo primes

For a class of polynomials $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$, which in particular includes all quadratic polynomials, and also trinomials of some special form, we show that, under some natural conditions (necessary for quadratic polynomials), the set of primes $p$ such that all iterations of $f$ are irreducible modulo $p$ is of relative density zero. Furthermore, we give an explicit bound on the rate of the decay of the density of such primes in an interval $[1, Q]$ as $Q \to \infty$. For this class of polynomials this gives a more precise version of a recent result of A. Ferraguti (2018), which applies to arbitrary polynomials but requires a certain assumption about their Galois group. Furthermore, under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis we obtain a stronger bound on this density.

On the Dynamical System Generated by the Möbius transformation at Prime Times

We study the distribution of the sequence of elements of the discrete dynamical system generated by iterations of the Möbius map $x \mapsto (ax + b)/(cx+d)$ over a finite field of $p$ elements at the moments of time that correspond to prime numbers. In particular, we obtain nontrivial estimates of exponential sums with such sequences.

Unlikely intersections over finite fields: polynomial orbits in small subgroups

We estimate the frequency of polynomial iterations which falls in a given multiplicative subgroup of a finite field of $p$ elements. We also give a lower bound on the size of the subgroup which is multiplicatively generated by the first $N$ elements in an orbit. We derive these from more general results about sequences of compositions or a fixed set of polynomials.

Values of rational functions in small subgroups of finite fields and the identity testing problem from powers

Motivated by some algorithmic problems, we give lower bounds on the size of the multiplicative groups containing rational function images of low-dimensional affine subspaces of a finite field~$\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ considered as a linear space over a subfield $\mathbb{F}_q$. We apply this to the recently introduced algorithmic problem of identity testing of "hidden" polynomials $f$ and $g$ over a high degree extension of a finite field, given oracle access to $f(x)^e$ and $g(x)^e$

Distribution of short subsequences of inversive congruential pseudorandom numbers modulo $2^t$

In this paper we study the distribution of very short sequences of inversive congruential pseudorandom numbers modulo $2^t$. We derive a new bound on exponential sums with such sequences and use it to give estimate their discrepancy. The technique we use, based the method of N. M. Korobov (1972) of estimating double Weyl sums and a fully explicit form of the Vinogradov mean value theorem due to K. Ford (2002), has never been used in this area and is very likely to find further applications.
