Algebraic dependence in generating functions and expansion complexity

In 2012, Diem introduced a new figure of merit for cryptographic sequences called expansion complexity. Recently, a series of paper has been published for analysis of expansion complexity and for testing sequences in terms of this new measure of randomness. In this paper, we continue this analysis. First we study the expansion complexity in terms of the Gröbner basis of the underlying polynomial ideal. Next, we prove bounds on the expansion complexity for random sequences. Finally, we study the expansion complexity of sequences defined by differential equations, including the inversive generator.

The measures of pseudorandomness and the NIST tests

A few years ago new quantitative measures of pseudorandomness of binary sequences have been introduced. Since that these measures have been studied in many papers and many constructions have been given along these lines. In this paper the connection between the new measures and the NIST tests is analyzed. It is shown that finite binary sequences possessing strong pseudorandom properties in terms of these new measures usually also pass or nearly pass most of the NIST tests.

Sparsity of curves and additive and multiplicative expansion of rational maps over finite fields

For a prime $p$ and a polynomial $F(X,Y)$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ of $p$ elements, we give upper bounds on the number of solutions $$ F(x,y)=0, \quad x\in\mathcal{A}, \ y\in \mathcal{B}, $$ where $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are very small intervals or subgroups. These bounds can be considered as positive characteristic analogues of the result of Bombieri and Pila (1989) on sparsity of integral points on curves. As an application we prove that distinct consecutive elements in sequences generated compositions of several rational functions are not contained in any short intervals or small subgroups.

On the $N$th linear complexity of automatic sequences

The $N$th linear complexity of a sequence is a measure of predictability. Any unpredictable sequence must have large $N$th linear complexity. However, in this paper we show that for $q$-automatic sequences over $\mathbb{F}_q$ the converse is not true. We prove that any (not ultimately periodic) $q$-automatic sequence over $\mathbb{F}_q$ has $N$th linear complexity of order of magnitude $N$. For some famous sequences including the Thue--Morse and Rudin--Shapiro sequence we determine the exact values of their $N$th linear complexities. These are non-trivial examples of predictable sequences with $N$th linear complexity of largest possible order of magnitude.

On the pseudorandomness of automatic sequences

We study the pseudorandomness of automatic sequences in terms of well-distribution and correlation measure of order 2. We detect non-random behavior which can be derived either from the functional equations satisfied by their generating functions or from their generating finite automatons, respectively.

On the elliptic curve endomorphism generator

For an elliptic curve $E$ over a finite field we define the point sequence $(P_n)$ recursively by $P_n=\vartheta (P_{n-1})=\vartheta ^n(P_0)$ with an endomorphism $\vartheta \in\mathrm{End}(E)$ and with some initial point $P_0$ on $E$. We study the distribution and the linear complexity of sequences obtained from $(P_n)$.

On the expansion complexity of sequences over finite fields

In 2012, Diem introduced a new figure of merit for cryptographic sequences called expansion complexity. In this paper, we slightly modify this notion to obtain the so-called irreducible-expansion complexity which is more suitable for certain applications. We analyze both, the classical and the modified expansion complexity. Moreover, we also study the expansion complexity of the explicit inversive congruential generator.

Predicting the elliptic curve congruential generator

Let $p$ be a prime and let $\mathbf{E}$ be an elliptic curve defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ of $p$ elements. For a point $G\in\mathbf{E}(\mathbb{F}_p)$ the elliptic curve congruential generator (with respect to the first coordinate) is a sequence $(x_n)$ defined by the relation $x_n=x(W_n)=x(W_{n-1}\oplus G)=x(nG\oplus W_0)$, $n=1,2,\dots$, where $\oplus$ denotes the group operation in $\mathbf{E}$ and $W_0$ is an initial point. In this paper, we show that if some consecutive elements of the sequence $(x_n)$ are given as integers, then one can compute in polynomial time an elliptic curve congruential generator (where the curve possibly defined over the rationals or over a residue ring) such that the generated sequence is identical to $(x_n)$ in the revealed segment. It turns out that in practice, all the secret parameters, and thus the whole sequence $(x_n)$, can be computed from eight consecutive elements, even if the prime and the elliptic curve are private.

The cross-correlation measure of families of finite binary sequences: limiting distributions and minimal values

Gyarmati, Mauduit and Sárközy introduced the cross-correlation measure $Φ_k(G)$ of order $k$ to measure the level of pseudorandom properties of families of finite binary sequences. In an earlier paper we estimated the cross-correlation measure of a random family of binary sequences. In this paper, we sharpen these earlier results by showing that for random families, the cross-correlation measure converges strongly, and so has limiting distribution. We also give sharp bounds to the minimum values of the cross-correlation measure, which settles a problem of Gyarmati, Mauduit and Sárközy nearly completely.

Expansion complexity and linear complexity of sequences over finite fields

The linear complexity is a measure for the unpredictability of a sequence over a finite field and thus for its suitability in cryptography. In 2012, Diem introduced a new figure of merit for cryptographic sequences called expansion complexity. We study the relationship between linear complexity and expansion complexity. In particular, we show that for purely periodic sequences both figures of merit provide essentially the same quality test for a sufficiently long part of the sequence. However, if we study shorter parts of the period or nonperiodic sequences, then we can show, roughly speaking, that the expansion complexity provides a stronger test. We demonstrate this by analyzing a sequence of binomial coefficients modulo $p$. Finally, we establish a probabilistic result on the behavior of the expansion complexity of random sequences over a finite field.

On the typical values of the cross-correlation measure

Gyarmati, Mauduit and Sárközy introduced the \textit{cross-correlation measure} $Φ_k(\mathcal{F})$ to measure the randomness of families of binary sequences $\mathcal{F} \subset \{-1,1\}^N$. In this paper we study the order of magnitude of the cross-correlation measure $Φ_k(\mathcal{F})$ for typical families. We prove that, for most families $\mathcal{F} \subset \{-1,1\}^N$ of size $2\leq |\mathcal{F}|<2^{N/12}$, $Φ_k(\mathcal{F})$ is of order $\sqrt{N\log \binom{N}{k}+k\log |\mathcal{F}|}$ for any given $2\leq k \leq N/(6\log_2 |\mathcal{F}|)$.

On the linear complexity profile of some sequences derived from elliptic curves

For a given elliptic curve $\mathbf{E}$ over a finite field of odd characteristic and a rational function $f$ on $\mathbf{E}$ we first study the linear complexity profiles of the sequences $f(nG)$, $n=1,2,\dots$ which complements earlier results of Hess and Shparlinski. We use Edwards coordinates to be able to deal with many $f$ where Hess and Shparlinski's result does not apply. Moreover, we study the linear complexities of the (generalized) elliptic curve power generators $f(e^nG)$, $n=1,2,\dots$. We present large families of functions $f$ such that the linear complexity profiles of these sequences are large.
