Parton distribution functions and strong coupling constant: MSHT

We present an overview of the MSHT family of global PDF fits. We describe the underlying methodology, including parameterisation choice, theoretical inputs and datasets included in the fit. We describe the impact of recent theoretical advances in the inclusion of higher order QCD and EW corrections on the fit and their implications for phenomenology. We discuss recent methodological improvements and ongoing studies relating to closure tests of the parameterisation flexibility and the inclusion of errors on errors for experimental data. We in addition discuss recent results on the determination of the strong coupling from the MSHT fits.

Assessing the Impact of Fitting Methodology at aN$^3$LO with FPPDF: an Open Source Tool for Extracting Parton Distribution Functions in the Hessian Approach

We present a new public code, FPPDF, to perform global fits of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The fitting methodology follows that implemented by the MSHT collaboration, namely applying a fixed polynomial parameterisation of the PDFs and Hessian approach to error propagation, while for data and theory settings the libraries used by the NNPDF collaboration are taken. This therefore complements the already publicly available NNPDF fitting code to enable fits with both neural network and fixed polynomial PDF parameterisations to be performed by the community, with otherwise identical theoretical and experimental inputs. As a first application, we use the new code to compare the PDFs found from fits at both NNLO and aN$^3$LO perturbative orders, but applying these two fitting approaches. We assess the impact of the two different methodologies on the PDFs and their uncertainties, providing results that complement previous comparisons between published PDF sets at NNLO and aN$^3$LO. We in particular find that the relative impact of going to the higher perturbative order and/or including missing higher order uncertainties is rather insensitive to which of these PDF parameterisation methodologies are used.

A First Account of the Impact of Ion Electromagnetic Dissociation on Event Exclusivity in Ultraperipheral LHC Collisions

In this Letter we explore the modelling of hadron production in electromagnetic ion dissociation (EMD) processes in high-energy ultraperipheral collisions at LHC energies. Since EMD can accompany exclusive particle production in these interactions, we demonstrate that the resulting hadrons can break the exclusivity vetos typically imposed by experiments. As two representative examples, we calculate the impact on existing LHC measurements of exclusive muon pair production ($γγ\toμμ$) and exclusive coherent $J/ψ$ production. We demonstrate that accounting for this effect resolves long-standing tensions between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements.

The impact of inclusive electron ion collider data on the strong coupling determination in a global PDF fit

We present a study of the impact of data from the upcoming Electron Ion Collider (EIC) on the determination of the strong coupling within the context of the global MSHT fitting framework. To achieve this, we generate EIC electron-proton scattering pseudodata according to both conservative and optimistic experimental uncertainty projections and perform a simultaneous fit to obtain the proton PDFs and the value of the strong coupling. In the conservative case the impact is found to be moderate, but non-negligible, while in the optimistic case it is observed to be rather significant. These results therefore underline the promising potential for the EIC in the determination of the strong coupling. We in addition explore the impact of any potential tensions between the EIC data and the rest of the data in the global fit by injecting explicit inconsistencies into the pseudodata generation. This can lead to a noticeable bias in the extracted value of the strong coupling, highlighting the importance of accounting for all sources of theoretical uncertainty in the fit as well as the relevance of an enlarged, conservative, error definition in the determination of the strong coupling.

Incoherent Particle Production in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper, we present the first complete treatment of incoherent photon-initiated production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions, focussing on the dilepton and diphoton final states. In the former case we compare to the ATLAS measurement of dielectron production and find that our predictions match the data very well. In the latter case we show that this contribution is too small to explain the observed broad in diphoton acoplanarity background to the purely coherent light-by-light scattering signal. We in addition consider a new `quark emission' topology, which while naively might be expected to dominate the incoherent diphoton production channel, is in fact found to be kinematically suppressed. Finally, we revisit QCD-initiated diphoton production and issue of theoretical uncertainties in this case. We find that this again cannot explain the observed size of the higher acoplanarity background. The production mechanism leading to this background to light-by-light production, and the reason for its observed enhancement in comparison to the dilepton case, therefore remains unclear.

MSHT Approximate N3LO PDFs: Updates and Consequences for Phenomenology

We present updates to the MSHT approximate N3LO PDFs focusing upon recent developments, examining the impacts of newly determined splitting function and transition matrix element calculations, performed since the public MSHT20aN3LO PDF set was released. We observe only small changes to the output PDFs, at most of similar size to their quoted uncertainties and typically notably less. Finally, we also present the impacts on the PDF luminosities, where changes are generally further reduced.

A reassessment of the role of high $x$ data on the MSHT global PDF fit

We present updates within the MSHT global PDF fit that focus on the high $x$ region, and on improving our understanding of the interplay of various theoretical contributions and experimental constraints here. We revisit the question of target mass and higher twist corrections, considering their impact for the first time at approximate N$^3$LO order in a global PDF analysis. Their inclusion is found to be moderate but not negligible on both the PDFs and preferred value of the strong coupling. Increased stability in these at aN$^3$LO is observed in comparison to lower orders. We also study the impact of an updated treatment of various fixed-target DIS data, the inclusion of Seaquest fixed-target Drell Yan data, and new ZEUS data that extends coverage into the high $x$ region. The Seaquest data have the largest effect of these, in particular on the light quark separation at high $x$, while the impact of the other updates is rather mild.

Modelling Coincident Particle Production in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper, we present an analysis of coincident particle production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. In particular, we present the first detailed and differential predictions for coincident $ρ^0$ meson production in association with muon pair production, motivated by the recent ATLAS measurement of this process. These are found to describe the data very well, including the dependence of the coincidence fraction on the ZDC selection and/or other kinematic constraints on the muons. Differential predictions at the level of various kinematic variables are presented, and the calculation is made publicly available in the SuperChic MC generator. We also present general results for coincident two-photon initiated production focussing on muon and electron pair production; while the former is rather suppressed, the latter will be ubiquitous at threshold. The impact of coincident production on exclusivity vetos in ultraperipheral measurements is in addition discussed.

A Stress Test of Global PDF Fits: Closure Testing the MSHT PDFs and a First Direct Comparison to the Neural Net Approach

We present a first global closure test of the fixed parameterisation (MSHT) approach to PDF fitting. We find that the default MSHT20 parameterisation can reproduce the features of the input set in such a closure test to well within the textbook uncertainties. This provides strong evidence that parameterisation inflexibility in the MSHT20 fit is not a significant issue in the data region. We also present the first completely like--for--like comparison between two global PDF fits, namely MSHT and NNPDF, where the only difference is guaranteed to be due to the fitting methodology. To achieve this, we present a fit to the NNPDF4.0 data and theory inputs, but with the MSHT fixed parameterisation. We find that this gives a moderately, but noticeably, better fit quality than the central NNPDF4.0 fits, both with perturbative and fitted charm, and that this difference persists at the level of the PDFs and benchmark cross sections. The NNPDF4.0 uncertainties are found to be broadly in line with the MSHT results if a textbook $T^2=1$ tolerance is applied, but to be significantly smaller if a tolerance typical of the MSHT20 fit is applied. This points to an inherent inconsistency between these approaches. We discuss the need for an enlarged tolerance criterion in global PDF fits in detail, and demonstrate the impact of data/theory inconsistencies in the closure test setting; namely, these do not lead to any increase in the $T^2=1$ PDF uncertainty. We also investigate the impact of restricting the PDF parameterisation to have fewer free parameters than the default MSHT20 case, and find this can be significant at the level of both closure tests and the full fit.

Higher precision constraints on the tau $g-2$ in LHC photon-initiated production: a full account of hadron dissociation and soft survival effects

We present the first calculation of photon-initiated $τ$ pair production in the presence of non-zero anomalous magnetic ($a_τ$) and/or electric dipole ($d_τ$) moments of the $τ$ lepton that accounts for the non-trivial interplay between these modifications with the soft survival factor and the possibility of dissociation of the hadron (proton or ion) beam. The impact of these is on general grounds not expected to have a uniform dependence on the value of $a_τ, d_τ$, but in all previous analyses this assumption has been made. We have therefore investigated the importance of these effects in the context of photon-initiated $τ$ pair production in both pp and PbPb collisions. This is in general found to be relatively small, at the percent level in terms of any extracted limits or observations of $a_τ, d_τ$, such that these effects can indeed be safely ignored in existing experimental analyses. However, as the precision of such determinations increases in the future, the relevance of these effects will likewise increase. With this in mind we have made our calculation publicly available in the SuperChic Monte Carlo generator, including the possibility to simulate this process for varying $a_τ, d_τ$ without rerunning.

Exciting Ions: a Systematic Treatment of Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions with Nuclear Breakup

We present an updated theoretical treatment of ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) of heavy ions, within the SuperChic Monte Carlo generator. This in particular accounts for mutual ion excitation through additional photon exchanges between the colliding ions. This effect occurs frequently in UPCs, and indeed can be (and has been) measured in data through the use of zero degree calorimeter (ZDC) detectors installed in the far forward region. The theoretical approach presented here accounts for the non-trivial and non-negligible impact such ion dissociation has on the measured cross sections and distributions of the produced particles in the central detectors. This builds on previous work, whereby the survival factor probability of no additional inelastic ion-ion scattering due to the strong interaction, and its kinematic impact, are also accounted for within the same overall framework. We compare to data from ATLAS and CMS at the LHC, and STAR at RHIC, and find in general encouraging agreement for a range of observables and ZDC neutron tags, with some room for further improvement, suggesting the inclusion of higher order QED effects and/or tuning of the the $γA \to A^*$ cross section may be desirable. Overall, this gives confidence in the approach considered here and for applications to new phenomena within and beyond the Standard Model.

A Benchmarking of QCD Evolution at Approximate $N^3LO$

We present a detailed benchmarking of different treatments of the QCD evolution of unpolarized PDFs at approximate $N^3LO$ ($aN^3LO$) order in the QCD coupling. Namely, the implementations in the public $aN^3LO$ releases of the MSHT and NNPDF global PDF fitters, as well as that of the theoretical FHMRUVV collaboration are compared. This follows the same procedure as in previous benchmarking exercises at lower order, that is by considering the impact of this evolution on a set of simple toy PDFs.

A first determination of the strong coupling $α_S$ at approximate N$^{3}$LO order in a global PDF fit

We present the first determination of the value of the strong coupling via a simultaneous global fit of the proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) at approximate N$^{3}$LO (aN$^{3}$LO) order in QCD. This makes use of the MSHT global PDF fitting framework, and in particular the recent theoretical advances that allow a PDF fit to now be performed at this order. The value of the strong coupling is found to be $α_S(M_Z^2)$(aN$^{3}$LO)$ = 0.1170 \pm 0.0016$. This is in excellent agreement with the NNLO value of $α_S(M_Z^2)$(NNLO) $= 0.1171 \pm 0.0014$, indicating that good perturbative convergence has been found. The resulting uncertainties, calculated using the MSHT dynamic tolerance procedure, are somewhat larger, but more accurate, at aN$^{3}$LO, due to the missing higher order theoretical uncertainties that are included at this order, but not at NNLO. We in addition present a detailed breakdown of the individual dataset sensitivity to the value of the strong coupling, with special focus on the impact of fitting dijet rather than inclusive jet data. This choice is found to have a non-negligible impact, but with overall good consistency found, especially at aN$^{3}$LO.

The Impact of LHC Jet and $Z$ $p_T$ Data at up to Approximate N${}^3$LO Order in the MSHT Global PDF Fit

We present an analysis of two key sets of data constraining the high $x$ gluon at up to approximate N${}^3$LO in QCD within the MSHT global PDF fitting framework. We begin with LHC 7 and 8 TeV inclusive jet and dijet production at both NNLO and aN${}^3$LO. This makes use of the formalism established in the previous global MSHT20aN${}^3$LO PDF fit, but now considers the role of dijet production for the first time at this order. We present a detailed comparison of the fit quality and PDF impact for both cases, and consider the role that electroweak corrections, and the scale choice for inclusive jet production has. Some mild tension between these data sets in the impact on the high $x$ gluon is seen at NNLO, but this is largely eliminated at aN${}^3$LO. While a good fit quality to the dijet data is achieved at both orders, the fit quality to the inclusive jet data is relatively poor. We examine the impact of including full colour corrections in a global PDF fit for the first time, finding this to be relatively mild. We also revisit the fit to the ATLAS 8 TeV $Z$ $p_T$ data, considering the role that the $p_T$ cuts, data selection and different aspects of the aN${}^3$LO treatment have on the fit quality and PDF impact. We observe that in all cases the aN${}^3$LO fit quality is consistently improved relative to the NNLO, indicating a clear preference for higher order theory for these data.

Combining QED and Approximate N${}^3$LO QCD Corrections in a Global PDF Fit: MSHT20qed_an3lo PDFs

We present the MSHT20qed_an3lo parton distribution functions (PDFs). These result from the first global PDF analysis to combine QED and approximate N${}^3$LO (aN${}^3$LO) QCD corrections in the theoretical calculation of the PDF evolution and cross sections entering the fit. We examine the PDF impact, and find that the effect of QED is relatively mild in comparison to the aN${}^3$LO corrections, although it should still be accounted for at the level of precision now required. These QED corrections are in addition found to roughly factorise from the QCD corrections; that is, their relative impact on the PDFs is roughly the same at NNLO and aN${}^3$LO. The fit quality exhibits a very small deterioration at aN${}^3$LO upon the inclusion of QED corrections, which is rather smaller than the deterioration observed at NNLO in QCD. The impact on several cross sections at N${}^3$LO is also examined, including the Higgs cross section via gluon fusion at N${}^3$LO. Finally, a LO in QCD fit that includes QED corrections is also presented: the MSHT20qed_lo set.

Snowmass 2021 whitepaper: Proton structure at the precision frontier

An overwhelming number of theoretical predictions for hadron colliders require parton distribution functions (PDFs), which are an important ingredient of theory infrastructure for the next generation of high-energy experiments. This whitepaper summarizes the status and future prospects for determination of high-precision PDFs applicable in a wide range of energies and experiments, in particular in precision tests of the Standard Model and in new physics searches at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider and Electron-Ion Collider. We discuss the envisioned advancements in experimental measurements, QCD theory, global analysis methodology, and computing that are necessary to bring unpolarized PDFs in the nucleon to the N2LO and N3LO accuracy in the QCD coupling strength. Special attention is given to the new tasks that emerge in the era of the precision PDF analysis, such as those focusing on the robust control of systematic factors both in experimental measurements and theoretical computations. Various synergies between experimental and theoretical studies of the hadron structure are explored, including opportunities for studying PDFs for nuclear and meson targets, PDFs with electroweak contributions or dependence on the transverse momentum, for incisive comparisons between phenomenological models for the PDFs and computations on discrete lattice, and for cross-fertilization with machine learning/AI approaches. Approximate N$^{3}$LO Parton Distribution Functions with Theoretical Uncertainties: MSHT20aN$^3$LO PDFs

We present the first global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) at approximate N$^{3}$LO in the strong coupling constant $α_{s}$, extending beyond the current highest NNLO achieved in PDF fits. To achieve this, we present a general formalism for the inclusion of theoretical uncertainties associated with the perturbative expansion in the strong coupling. We demonstrate how using the currently available knowledge surrounding the next highest order (N$^{3}$LO) in $α_{s}$ can provide consistent, justifiable and explainable approximate N$^{3}$LO (aN$^{3}$LO) PDFs. This includes estimates for uncertainties due the the currently unknown N$^{3}$LO ingredients, but also implicitly some missing higher order uncertainties (MHOUs) beyond these. Specifically, we approximate the splitting functions, transition matrix elements, coefficient functions and $K$-factors for multiple processes to N$^{3}$LO. Crucially, these are constrained to be consistent with the wide range of already available information about N$^{3}$LO to match the complete result at this order as accurately as possible. Using this approach we perform a fully consistent approximate N$^{3}$LO global fit within the MSHT framework. This relies on an expansion of the Hessian procedure used in previous MSHT fits to allow for sources of theoretical uncertainties. These are included as nuisance parameters in a global fit, controlled by knowledge and intuition based prior distributions. We analyse the differences between our aN$^{3}$LO PDFs and the standard NNLO PDF set, and study the impact of using aN$^{3}$LO PDFs on the LHC production of a Higgs boson at this order. Finally, we provide guidelines on how these PDFs should be be used in phenomenological investigations.
