A new calculation of semi-exclusive axion-like particle production at the LHC

We present a new calculation of axion-like particle (ALP) production in the semi-exclusive photon-initiated (PI) channel, that is either with intact outgoing protons or rapidity gaps present in the final state, and with no colour flow between the colliding LHC protons. This is the first full treatment of this process, accounting for both the possibility of proton dissociation and the survival factor probability of no additional proton-proton interactions, including its kinematic and process dependence. We present the expected event yields in the case that either one or both protons are required to be registered in the forward proton detectors installed in association with ATLAS and CMS. We find that this process can be sensitive to currently unprobed regions of ALP mass and ALP-photon coupling, in particular in the intermediate mass region. Our calculation is provided in the publicly available SuperChic 4 Monte Carlo (MC) generator, and can be passed to a general purpose MC for showering and hadronization of the final state.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Electron Ion Collider for High Energy Physics

Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a particle accelerator facility planned for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York by the United States Department of Energy. EIC will provide capabilities of colliding beams of polarized electrons with polarized beams of proton and light ions. EIC will be one of the largest and most sophisticated new accelerator facilities worldwide, and the only new large-scale accelerator facility planned for construction in the United States in the next few decades. The versatility, resolving power and intensity of EIC will present many new opportunities to address some of the crucial and fundamental open scientific questions in particle physics. This document provides an overview of the science case of EIC from the perspective of the high energy physics community.

Parton distributions from LHC, HERA, Tevatron and fixed target data: MSHT20 PDFs

We present the new MSHT20 set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, determined from global analyses of the available hard scattering data. The PDFs are made available at NNLO, NLO, and LO, and supersede the MMHT14 sets. They are obtained using the same basic framework, but the parameterisation is now adapted and extended, and there are 32 pairs of eigenvector PDFs. We also include a large number of new data sets: from the final HERA combined data on total and heavy flavour structure functions, to final Tevatron data, and in particular a significant number of new LHC 7 and 8 TeV data sets on vector boson production, inclusive jets and top quark distributions. We include up to NNLO QCD corrections for all data sets that play a major role in the fit, and NLO EW corrections where relevant. We find that these updates have an important impact on the PDFs, and for the first time the NNLO fit is strongly favoured over the NLO, reflecting the wider range and in particular increased precision of data included in the fit. There are some changes to central values and a significant reduction in the uncertainties of the PDFs in many, though not all, cases. Nonetheless, the PDFs and the resulting predictions are generally within one standard deviation of the MMHT14 results. The major changes are the $u-d$ valence quark difference at small $x$, due to the improved parameterisation and new precise data, the $\bar d, \bar u$ difference at small $x$, due to a much improved parameterisation, and the strange quark PDF due to the effect of LHC $W,Z$ data and inclusion of new NNLO corrections for dimuon production in neutrino DIS. We discuss the phenomenological impact of our results, and in general find reduced uncertainties in predictions for processes such as Higgs, top quark pair and $W,Z$ production at post LHC Run-II energies.

Modelling $W^+ W^-$ production with rapidity gaps at the LHC

We present a new calculation of $W^+ W^-$ production in the semi-exclusive channel, that is either with intact outgoing protons or rapidity gaps present in the final state, and with no colour flow between the colliding protons. This study provides the first complete prediction of the $W^+ W^-$ semi-exclusive cross section, as well as the breakdown between elastic and proton dissociative channels. It combines the structure function calculation for a precise modelling of the region of low momentum transfers with a parton-level calculation in the region of high momentum transfers. The survival factor probability of no additional proton-proton interactions is fully accounted for, including its kinematic and process dependence. We analyse in detail the role that the pure photon-initiated ($γγ\to W^+ W^-$) subprocess plays, a comparison that is only viable by working in the electroweak axial gauge. In this way, we find that the dominance of this is not complete in the proton dissociative cases, although once $Z$-initiated production is included a significantly better matching to the complete calculation is achieved. A direct consequence of this is that the relative elastic, single and double dissociative fractions are in general different in comparison to the case of lepton pair production. We present a direct comparison to the recent ATLAS data on semi-exclusive $W^+ W^-$ production, finding excellent agreement within uncertainties. Our calculation is provided in the publicly available SuperChic 4.1 Monte Carlo (MC) generator, and can be passed to a general purpose MC for showering and hadronization of the final state.

Physics with Leptons and Photons at the LHC

We present a phenomenological study of photon-initiated (PI) lepton production at the LHC, as implemented in the structure function (SF) approach. We provide detailed predictions for multi-differential lepton pair production, and show that the impact on observables sensitive to the the weak mixing angle, $\sin^2 θ_W$, and $W$ boson mass, $M_W$, as well as PDFs can be non-negligible, in particular given the high precision being aimed for. The SF calculation can provide percent level precision in the corresponding production cross sections, and is therefore well positioned to account for LHC precision requirements. We consider the pure $γγ$ channel, and compare in detail to the NLO collinear calculation. We in addition include initial-state $Z$ as well as mixed $γ/Z + q$ contributions, and assess their impact. We also consider photon-initiated lepton-lepton scattering, and again find the SF approach can provide high precision predictions for this process in way that can straightforwardly account for any fiducial cuts imposed. Finally, we provide a publicly available Monte Carlo generator, SFGen, for PI lepton pair production and lepton-lepton scattering within the SF approach, for use by the community.

QED Parton Distribution Functions in the MSHT20 Fit

We present the MSHT20qed set of parton distribution functions (PDFs). These are obtained from the MSHT20 global analysis via a refit including QED corrections to the DGLAP evolution at ${\cal O}(α),{\cal O}(αα_S)$ and ${\cal O}(α^2)$, and containing the photon PDF of the proton. As in the previous MMHT15qed study we use an input distribution for the photon that is derived from the LUXqed formulation, and find good consistency for the photon PDF with that of MMHT15qed, as well as with other recent sets. We also present a set of QED corrected neutron PDFs and accompanying photon distribution, and provide the photon PDF of the nucleons separated into elastic and inelastic contributions. We assess the general expectations for the impact of photon-initiated (PI) corrections to processes entering PDF fits, and review the effect of QED corrections on the other partons and on the fit quality, where electroweak corrections (including PI production) are appropriately added to the cross sections wherever possible. We explore the phenomenological implications of this set by comparing to a variety of benchmark cross sections, finding small but significant corrections due to the inclusion of QED effects in the PDFs.

The Proton in High Definition: Revisiting Photon-Initiated Production in High Energy Collisions

We re-examine the current state of the art for the calculation of photon-initiated processes at the LHC, as formulated in terms of a photon PDF in the proton that may be determined rather precisely from the known proton structure functions. We in particular demonstrate that a by construction more precise calculation is provided by a direct application of the structure function approach, best known from the case of Higgs Boson production via vector boson fusion. This avoids any artificial scale variation uncertainties, which can otherwise be rather significant for processes calculated within the standard approach thus far. To understand the source of these, we present a detailed comparison of the structure function approach and its relation to the photon PDF. We then provide precise predictions for the photon-initiated contribution to lepton pair production at the LHC, including the lepton pair transverse momentum distribution. Thus, by a direct application of the structure function formalism we show how the contribution from initial-state photons at the LHC may for the first time be included with high precision in a universal and straightforward way, providing a high definition picture of the photon content of the proton.

A new approach to modelling elastic and inelastic photon-initiated production at the LHC: SuperChic 4

We present the results of the new SuperChic 4 Monte Carlo implementation of photon-initiated production in proton-proton collisions, considering as a first example the case of lepton pair production. This is based on the structure function calculation of the underlying process, and focusses on a complete account of the various contributing channels, including the case where a rapidity gap veto is imposed. We provide a careful treatment of the contributions where either (single dissociation), both (double dissociation) or neither (elastic) proton interacts inelastically and dissociates, and interface our results to Pythia for showering and hadronization. The particle decay distribution from dissociation system, as well the survival probability for no additional proton-proton interactions, are both fully accounted for; these are essential for comparing to data where a rapidity gap veto is applied. We present detailed results for the impact of the veto requirement on the differential cross section, compare to and find good agreement with ATLAS 7 TeV data on semi-exclusive production, and provide a new precise evaluation of the background from semi-exclusive lepton pair production to SUSY particle production in compressed mass scenarios, which is found to be low.

Elastic photon-initiated production at the LHC: the role of hadron-hadron interactions

We analyse in detail the role of additional hadron-hadron interactions in elastic photon-initiated (PI) production at the LHC, both in $pp$ and heavy ion collisions. We first demonstrate that the source of difference between our predictions and other results in the literature for PI muon pair production is dominantly due to an unphysical cut that is imposed in these latter results on the dimuon-hadron impact parameter. We in addition show that this is experimentally disfavoured by the shape of the muon kinematic distributions measured by ATLAS in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions. We then consider the theoretical uncertainty due to the survival probability for no additional hadron-hadron interactions, and in particular the role this may play in the tendency for the predicted cross sections to lie somewhat above ATLAS data on PI muon pair production, in both $pp$ and PbPb collisions. This difference is relatively mild, at the $\sim 10\%$ level, and hence a very good control over the theory is clearly required. We show that this uncertainty is very small, and it is only by taking very extreme and rather unphysical variations in the modelling of the survival factor that this tension can be removed. This underlines the basic, rather model independent, point that a significant fraction of elastic PI scattering occurs for hadron-hadron impact parameters that are simply outside the range of QCD interactions, and hence this sets a lower bound on the survival factor in any physically reasonable approach. Finally, other possible origins for this discrepancy are discussed.

An investigation of the $α_S$ and heavy quark mass dependence in the MSHT20 global PDF analysis

We investigate the MSHT20 global PDF sets, demonstrating the effects of varying the strong coupling $α_S(M_Z^2)$ and the masses of the charm and bottom quarks. We determine the preferred value, and accompanying uncertainties, when we allow $α_S(M_Z^2)$ to be a free parameter in the MSHT20 global analyses of deep-inelastic and related hard scattering data, at both NLO and NNLO in QCD perturbation theory. We also study the constraints on $α_S(M_Z^2)$ which come from the individual data sets in the global fit by repeating the NNLO and NLO global analyses at various fixed values of $α_S(M_Z^2)$, spanning the range $α_S(M_Z^2)=0.108$ to $0.130$ in units of $0.001$. We make all resulting PDFs sets available. We find that the best fit values are $α_S(M_Z^2)=0.1203\pm 0.0015$ and $0.1174\pm 0.0013$ at NLO and NNLO respectively. We investigate the relationship between the variations in $α_S(M_Z^2)$ and the uncertainties on the PDFs, and illustrate this by calculating the cross sections for key processes at the LHC. We also perform fits where we allow the heavy quark masses $m_c$ and $m_b$ to vary away from their default values and make PDF sets available in steps of $Δm_c =0.05~{\rm GeV}$ and $Δm_b =0.25~{\rm GeV}$, using the pole mass definition of the quark masses. As for varying $α_S(M_Z^2)$ values, we present the variation in the PDFs and in the predictions. We examine the comparison to data, particularly the HERA data on charm and bottom cross sections and note that our default values are very largely compatible with best fits to data. We provide PDF sets with 3 and 4 active quark flavours, as well as the standard value of 5 flavours.

Physics from Photons at the LHC

LHC collisions can act as a source of photons in the initial state. This mechanism plays an important role in the production of particles with electroweak couplings, and a precise account of photon-initiated (PI) production at the LHC is a key ingredient in the LHC precision physics programme. I will discuss the possibility of modelling PI processes directly via the structure function approach. This can provide percent level precision in the production cross sections, and is therefore well positioned to account for LHC precision requirements. This formalism in addition allows one to make use of another useful feature of photons, namely that they are colour-singlet and can often be emitted elastically (or quasi-elastically) from the proton. I will discuss recent work on applications of the structure function approach to precision calculations of PI production in the inclusive mode, and to 'exclusive' processes with rapidity gaps, which can provide a unique probe of the Standard Model and physics beyond it.

Ad Lucem: QED Parton Distribution Functions in the MMHT Framework

We present the MMHT2015qed PDF set, resulting from the inclusion of QED corrections to the existing set of MMHT Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs), and which contain the photon PDF of the proton. Adopting an input distribution from the LUXqed formulation, we discuss our methods of including QED effects for the full, coupled DGLAP evolution of all partons with QED at $\mathcal{O}(α)$, $\mathcal{O}(αα_{S})$, $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$. While we find consistency for the photon PDF of the proton with other recent sets, building on this we also present a set of QED corrected neutron PDFs and provide the photon PDF separated into its elastic and inelastic contributions. The effect of QED corrections on the other partons and the fit quality is investigated, and the sources of uncertainty for the photon are outlined. Finally we explore the phenomenological implications of this set, giving the partonic luminosities for both the elastic and inelastic contributions to the photon and the effect of our photon PDF on fits to high mass Drell-Yan production, including the photon--initiated channel.

Standard Model Physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. This document summarises the physics reach of the HL-LHC in the realm of strong and electroweak interactions and top quark physics, and provides a glimpse of the potential of a possible further upgrade of the LHC to a 27 TeV $pp$ collider, the High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC), assumed to accumulate an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$.

Searches for Dark Matter at the LHC in forward proton mode

We analyze in detail the LHC prospects at the center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV for charged electroweakino searches, decaying to leptons, in compressed supersymmetry scenarios, via exclusive photon-initiated pair production. This provides a potentially increased sensitivity in comparison to inclusive channels, where the background is often overwhelming. We pay particular attention to the challenges that such searches would face in the hostile high pile-up environment of the LHC, giving close consideration to the backgrounds that will be present. The signal we focus on is the exclusive production of same-flavour muon and electron pairs, with missing energy in the final state, and with two outgoing intact protons registered by the dedicated forward proton detectors installed in association with ATLAS and CMS. We present results for slepton masses of 120--300 GeV and slepton-neutralino mass splitting of 10-20 GeV, and find that the relevant backgrounds can be controlled to the level of the expected signal yields. The most significant such backgrounds are due to semi-exclusive lepton pair production at lower masses, with a proton produced in the initial proton dissociation system registering in the forward detectors, and from the coincidence of forward protons produced in pile-up events with an inclusive central event that mimics the signal. We also outline a range of potential methods to further suppress these backgrounds as well as to enlarge the signal yields.

Updates of PDFs in the MMHT framework

We summarise recent developments in the path towards the "MMHT19" parton distribution functions. We concentrate on the extraction of the strange quark upon the improvement of theoretical calculations for NNLO charged current cross sections; the effect of an extension of our parameterisation; and the role of correlated uncertainties in some data sets which prove difficult to fit.

On the Consistent Use of Scale Variations in PDF Fits and Predictions

We present an investigation of the theoretical uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) due to missing higher-order corrections in the perturbative predictions used in the fit, and their relationship to the uncertainties in subsequent predictions made using the PDFs. We consider in particular the standard approach of factorization and renormalization scale variation, and derive general results for the consistent application of these at the PDF fit stage. To do this, we use the fact that a PDF fit may be recast in a physical basis, where the PDFs themselves are bypassed entirely, and one instead relates measured observables to predicted ones. In the case of factorization scale variation we find that in various situations there is a high degree of effective correlation between the variation in the fit and in predicted observables. In particular, including such a variation in both cases can lead to an exaggerated theoretical uncertainty. More generally, a careful treatment of this correlation appears mandatory, at least within the standard scale variation paradigm. For the renormalization scale, the situation is less straightforward, but again we highlight the potential for correlations between related processes in the fit and predictions to enter at the same level as between processes in the fit or prediction alone.

Exclusive LHC physics with heavy ions: SuperChic 3

We present results of the updated SuperChic 3 Monte Carlo event generator for central exclusive production. This extends the previous treatment of proton-proton collisions to include heavy ion (pA and AA) beams, for both photon and QCD-initiated production, the first time such a unified treatment of exclusive processes has been presented in a single generator. To achieve this we have developed a theory of the gap survival factor in heavy ion collisions, which allows us to derive some straightforward results about the $A$ scaling of the corresponding cross sections. We compare against the recent ATLAS and CMS measurements of light-by-light scattering at the LHC, in lead-lead collisions. We find that the background from QCD-initiated production is expected to be very small, in contrast to some earlier estimates. We also present results from new photon-initiated processes that can now be generated, namely the production of axion-like particles, monopole pairs and monopolium, top quark pair production, and the inclusion of $W$ loops in light-by-light scattering.
