Optical evidence for a spin-filter effect in the charge transport of $Eu_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}B_{6}$

We have measured the optical reflectivity $R(ω)$ of $Eu_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}B_{6}$ as a function of temperature between 1.5 and 300 $K$ and in external magnetic fields up to 7 $T$. The slope at the onset of the plasma edge feature in $R(ω)$ increases with decreasing temperature and increasing field but the plasma edge itself does not exhibit the remarkable blue shift that is observed in the binary compound $EuB_{6}$. The analysis of the magnetic field dependence of the low temperature optical conductivity spectrum confirms the previously observed exponential decrease of the electrical resistivity upon increasing, field-induced bulk magnetization at constant temperature. In addition, the individual exponential magnetization dependences of the plasma frequency and scattering rate are extracted from the optical data.

MgB2 single crystals: high pressure growth and anisotropic properties

Single crystals of MgB2 with a size up to 1.5x0.9x0.2 mm3 have been grown with a high pressure cubic anvil technique. The crystal growth process is very peculiar and involves an intermediate nitride, namely MgNB9. Single crystals of BN and MgB2 grow simultaneously by a peritectic decomposition of MgNB9. Magnetic measurements in fields of 1-5 Oe show sharp transitions to the superconducting state at 37-38.6 K with width of ~0.5 K. The high quality of the crystals allowed the accurate determination of magnetic, transport and optical properties as well as scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) and decoration studies. Investigations of crystals with torque magnetometry show that Hc2//c is very low (24 kOe at 15 K), while Hc2//ab increases up to 140 kOe at 15 K. The upper critical field anisotropy gamma = Hc2//ab/ Hc2//c was found to be temperature dependent (decreasing from 6 at 15 K to 2.8 at 35 K). The effective anisotropy gamma_eff, as calculated from reversible torque data near Tc, is field dependent (increasing roughly linearly from 2 in zero field to 3.7 in 10 kOe). The temperature and field dependence of the anisotropy can be related to the double gap structure of MgB2 with a large two-dimensional gap and small three-dimensional gap, the latter being rapidly suppressed in a magnetic field. Torque magnetometry investigations show a pronounced peak effect, indicating an order-disorder transition of vortex matter. Decoration experiments and STS visualise a hexagonal vortex lattice. STS spectra evidence two gaps (3 meV/6 meV) with direction dependent weight. Magneto-optic investigations with H//c show a clear signature of the smaller of the two gaps, disappearing in fields higher than Hc2//c.

Magneto-optical reflectivity of superconducting MgB2 single crystals

We present magneto-optical reflectivity results in the basal-plane of the hexagonal $MgB_2$. The data were collected on a mosaic of $MgB_2$ single crystals with $T_{c}=38 ~K$ from the ultraviolet down to the far infrared as a function of temperature and magnetic field oriented along the c-axis. In the far infrared there is a clear signature of the superconducting gap with a gap-ratio $2Δ/k_{B}T_{c}\sim 1.2$, well below the weak-coupling value. The gap is suppressed in an external magnetic field, which is a function of temperature. We extract the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ along the c-axis. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}$ is compatible with the Helfand-Werthamer behaviour.

Electronic Structure and Charge Dynamics of Huesler Alloy Fe2TiSn Probed by Infrared and Optical Spectroscopy

We report on the electrodynamics of a Heusler alloy Fe2TiSn probed over four decades in energy: from the far infrared to the ultraviolet. Our results do not support the suggestion of Kondo-lattice behavior inferred from specific heat measurements. Instead, we find a conventional Drude-like response of free carriers, with two additional absorption bands centered at around 0.1 and 0.87 eV. The latter feature can be interpreted as excitations across a pseudogap, in accord with band structure calculations.

Stripe Conductivity in La(1.775)Sr(0.225)NiO(4)

We report Raman light-scattering and optical conductivity measurements on a single crystal of La(1.775)Sr(0.225)NiO(4) which exhibits incommensurate charge-stripe order. The extra phonon peaks induced by stripe order can be understood in terms of the energies of phonons that occur at the charge-order wave vector, Q_c. A strong Fano antiresonance for a Ni-O bond-stretching mode provides clear evidence for finite dynamical conductivity within the charge stripes.

Excitonic lasing in semiconductor quantum wires

Direct experimental evidences for excitonic lasing is obtained in optically pumped V-groove quantum wire structures. We demonstrate that laser emission at a temperature of 10 K arises from a population inversion of localized excitons within the inhomogenously-broadened luminescence line. At the lasing threshold, we estimate a maximum exciton density of about 1.8 105cm-1.

Optical Properties of MFe_4P_12 filled skutterudites

Infrared reflectance spectroscopy measurements were made on four members of the MFe_4P_12 family of filled skutterudites, with M=La, Th, Ce and U. In progressing from M=La to U the system undergoes a metal-insulator transition. It is shown that, although the filling atom induces such dramatic changes in the transport properties of the system, it has only a small effect on lattice dynamics. We discuss this property of the compounds in the context of their possible thermoelectric applications.

On-chain electrodynamics of metallic (TMTSF)_2 X salts: Observation of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid response

We have measured the electrodynamic response in the metallic state of three highly anisotropic conductors, (TMTSF)_2 X, where X=PF_6, AsF_6, or ClO_4, and TMTSF is the organic molecule tetramethyltetraselenofulvalene. In all three cases we find dramatic deviations from a simple Drude response. The optical conductivity has two features: a narrow mode at zero frequency, with a small spectral weight, and a mode centered around 200 cm^{-1}, with nearly all of the spectral weight expected for the relevant number of carriers and single particle bandmass. We argue that these features are characteristic of a nearly one-dimensional half- or quarter-filled band with Coulomb correlations, and evaluate the finite energy mode in terms of a one-dimensional Mott insulator. At high frequencies (\hbarω> t_\perp, the transfer integral perpendicular to the chains), the frequency dependence of the optical conductivity σ_1(ω) is in agreement with calculations based on an interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and is different from what is expected for an uncorrelated one-dimensional semiconductor. The zero frequency mode shows deviations from a simple Drude response, and can be adequately described with a frequency dependent mass and relaxation rate.
