Multi-object spectroscopy of low redshift EIS clusters. III. Properties of optically selected clusters

We have carried out an investigation of the properties of low redshift EIS clusters using both spectroscopy and imaging data. We present new redshifts for 738 galaxies in 21 ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) Cluster fields. We use the ``gap''-technique to search for significant overdensities in redshift space and to identify groups/clusters of galaxies corresponding to the original EIS matched filter cluster candidates. In this way we spectroscopically confirm 20 of the 21 cluster candidates with a matched-filter estimated redshift z_MF=0.2. We have now obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 34 EIS cluster candidates with z_MF=0.2 (see also Hansen et al., 2002; Olsen et al., 2003). Of those we spectroscopically confirm 32 with redshifts ranging from z=0.064 to 0.283. We find that: 1) the velocity dispersions of the systems range from sigma_v<=130km/s to sigma_v=1200km/s, typical of galaxy groups to rich clusters; 2) richnesses corresponding to Abell classes R<=1; and 3) concentration indices ranging from C=0.2 to C=1.2. From the analysis of the colours of the galaxy populations we find that 53% of the spectroscopically confirmed systems have a ``significant'' red sequence. These systems are on average richer and have higher velocity dispersions. We find that the colour of the red sequence galaxies matches passive stellar evolution predictions.

Spin control in heteromagnetic nanostructures

The rapidly expanding research in Spintronics, the electronics utilizing the electron spin instead of its charge, is driven by the very interesting potential applications. The actual task is to develop principles for the spin manipulations in spintronic devices. In this Report we suggest and verify experimentally a concept of heteromagnetic semiconductor structures. It is based on spin diffusion between layers of the nanostructure with different magnetic properties and allows controlling the spin-switching rate for magnetic ions. A ten times increase of spin-lattice relaxation rate of magnetic Mn-ions is achieved in (Zn,Mn)Se/(Be,Mn)Te heteromagnetic structures with an inhomogeneous distribution of Mn-ions.

Multi-object spectroscopy of low redshift EIS clusters. II

We present the results of carrying out multi-object spectroscopy in 10 EIS cluster fields. Based on the list of 345 galaxy redshifts we identify significant 3D-density enhancements. For 9 of the EIS clusters we identify significant 3D-concentrations corresponding to the originally detected cluster candidate. We find redshifts in the range 0.097<=z<=0.257 which is in good agreement with the matched filter estimate of z_MF=0.2. We estimate velocity dispersions in the range 219-1160 km/s for the confirmed clusters.

Multi-object spectroscopy of low redshift EIS clusters. I

We report the results of the first multi-object spectroscopic observations at the Danish 1.54m telescope at La Silla, Chile. Observations of five cluster candidates from the ESO Imaging Survey Cluster Candidate Catalog are described. From these observations we confirm the reality of the five clusters with measured redshifts of 0.11<=z<=0.35. We estimate velocity dispersions in the range 294-621km/s indicating rather poor clusters. This, and the measured cluster redshifts are consistent with the results of the matched filter procedure applied to produce the Cluster Candidate Catalog.

Epitaxy and Magneto-transport properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor p- Be(1-x)MnxTe

We report on the MBE-growth and magnetotransport properties of p-type BeMnTe, a new ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor. BeMnTe thin film structures can be grown almost lattice matched to GaAs for Mn concentrations up to 10% using solid source MBE. A high p-type doping with nitrogen can be achieved by using an RF-plasma source. BeMnTe and BeTe layers have been characterized by magneto-transport measurements. At low temperatures, the BeMnTe samples exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect. A hysteresis in the anomalous Hall effect appears below 2.5K in the most heavily doped sample, which indicates the occurrence of a ferromagnetic phase.

Deep far infrared ISOPHOT survey in "Selected Area 57", I. Observations and source counts

We present here the results of a deep survey in a 0.4 sq.deg. blank field in Selected Area 57 conducted with the ISOPHOT instrument aboard ESAs Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at both 60 um and 90 um. The resulting sky maps have a spatial resolution of 15 x 23 sq.arcsec. per pixel which is much higher than the 90 x 90 sq.arcsec. pixels of the IRAS All Sky Survey. We describe the main instrumental effects encountered in our data, outline our data reduction and analysis scheme and present astrometry and photometry of the detected point sources. With a formal signal to noise ratio of 6.75 we have source detection limits of 90 mJy at 60 um and 50 mJy at 90 um. To these limits we find cumulated number densities of 5+-3.5 per sq.deg. at 60 um and 14.8+-5.0 per sq.deg.at 90 um. These number densities of sources are found to be lower than previously reported results from ISO but the data do not allow us to discriminate between no-evolution scenarios and various evolutionary models.

ISO far-infrared observations of rich galaxy clusters II. Sersic 159-03

The far-infrared emission from rich galaxy clusters is investigated. Maps have been obtained by ISO at 60, 100, 135, and 200 microns using the PHT-C camera. Ground based imaging and spectroscopy were also acquired. Here we present the results for the cooling flow cluster Sersic 159-03. An infrared source coincident with the dominant cD galaxy is found. Some off-center sources are also present, but without any obvious counterparts.
