Quantum transport in coupled resonators enclosed synthetic magnetic flux

Quantum transport properties are instrumental to understanding quantum coherent transport processes. Potential applications of quantum transport are widespread, in areas ranging from quantum information science to quantum engineering, and not restricted to quantum state transfer, control and manipulation. Here, we study light transport in a ring array of coupled resonators enclosed synthetic magnetic flux. The ring configuration, with an arbitrary number of resonators embedded, forms an two-arm Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. The influence of magnetic flux on light transport is investigated. Tuning the magnetic flux can lead to resonant transmission, while half-integer magnetic flux quantum leads to completely destructive interference and transmission zeros in an interferometer with two equal arms.

Non-Hermitian interferometer: Unidirectional amplification without distortion

A non-Hermitian interferometer can realize asymmetric transmission in the presence of imaginary potential and magnetic flux. Here, we propose a non-Hermitian dimer with an unequal hopping rate by an interferometer-like cluster in the framework of tight-binding model. The intriguing features of this design are the wave-vector independence and unidirectionality of scattering, which amplifies wavepacket without distortion and absorbs incoherent wave without reflection. The absorption relates to the system spectral singularities, the dynamical behaviors of the spectral singularities are also investigated analytically and numerically.

Wave emission and absorption at spectral singularities

We studied the critical dynamics of spectral singularities. The system investigated is a coupled resonator array with a side-coupled loss (gain) resonator. For a gain resonator, the system acts as a wave emitter at spectral singularities. The reflection probability increased linearly over time. The rate of increase is proportional to the width of the incident wave packet, which served as the spectral singularity observer in the experiment. For a lossy resonator, the system acts as a wave absorber. The emission and absorption states at spectral singularities coalesce in a finite parity-time (PT ) symmetric system that combined by the gain and loss structures cut from corrresponding scattering systems at spectral singularities; in this case, the PT -symmetric system is at an exceptional point with a 2 * 2 Jordan block. The dynamics of the PT -symmetric system exhibit the characteristic of exceptional points and spectral singularities.

Electrostriction coefficient of ferroelectric materials from ab initio computation

Electrostriction is an important material property that characterizes how strain changes with the development of polarization inside a material. We show that \textit{ab initio }techniques developed in recent years can be exploited to compute and understand electrostriction of ferroelectric materials. Here, electrostriction coefficients of ferroelectric BaTiO$_{3}$, PbTiO$_{3}$, as well as dielectric BaZrO$_{3}$, are obtained and analyzed. Possible causes of the difference between experimental and numerical results are discussed. We also identified that relative displacements between certain ions at a given polarization could be a good indicator of a material's electrostriction property.

Parity-time symmetry under magnetic flux

We study a parity-time (PT) symmetric ring lattice, with one pair of balanced gain and loss located at opposite positions. The system remains PT-symmetric when threaded by a magnetic flux; however, the PT symmetry is sensitive to the magnetic flux, in the presence of a large balanced gain and loss, or in a large system. We find a threshold gain/loss, above which, any nontrivial magnetic flux breaks the PT symmetry. We obtain the maximally tolerable magnetic flux for the exact PT-symmetric phase, which is approximately linearly dependent on a weak gain/loss.

Reciprocal and unidirectional scattering of parity-time symmetric structures

Parity-time (PT) symmetry is of great interest. The reciprocal and unidirectional features are intriguing besides the PT symmetry phase transition. Recently, the reciprocal transmission, unidirectional reflectionless and invisibility are intensively studied. Here, we show the reciprocal reflection/transmission in PT -symmetric system is closely related to the type of PT symmetry, that is, the axial (reflection) PT symmetry leads to reciprocal reflection (transmission). The results are further elucidated by studying the scattering of rhombic ring form coupled resonators with enclosed synthetic magnetic flux. The nonreciprocal phase shift induced by the magnetic flux and gain/loss break the parity (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetry but keep the parity-time (PT) symmetry. The reciprocal reflection (transmission) and unidirectional transmission (reflection) are found in the axial (reflection) PT-symmetric ring center. The explorations of symmetry and asymmetry from PT symmetry may shed light on novel one-way optical devices and application of PT metamaterials.

Calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization disconnected contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We report the first lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization disconnected contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment at physical pion mass. The calculation uses a refined noise-reduction technique which enabled the control of statistical uncertainties at the desired level with modest computational effort. Measurements were performed on the $48^3 \times 96$ physical-pion-mass lattice generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations. We find $a_μ^{\rm HVP~(LO)~DISC} = -9.6(3.3)(2.3)\times 10^{-10}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

New measurement of the excited states in $^{11}$B via the elastic resonance scattering of $^{10}$Be + p

The elastic resonance scattering protons decayed from $^{11}$B to the ground state of $^{10}$Be were measured using the thick-target technique in inverse kinematics at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). The obtained excitation functions were well described by a multichannel R-matrix procedure under the kinematics process assumption of resonant elastic scattering. The excitation energy of the resonant states ranges from 13.0 to 17.0 MeV, and their resonant parameters such as the resonant energy E$_{x}$, the spin-parity J$^π$, and the proton-decay partial width $Γ_p$ were determined from R-matrix fits to the data. Two of these states around E$_{x}$ = 14.55 MeV [J$^π$ = (3/2$^+$, 5/2$^+$), $Γ_p$ = 475 $\pm$ 80 keV] and E$_{x}$ = 14.74 MeV [J$^π$ = 3/2$^-$, $Γ_p$ = 830 $\pm$ 145 keV], and a probably populated state at E$_x$ = 16.18 MeV [J$^π$ =(1/2$^-$, 3/2$^-$), $Γ_p$ $<$ 60 keV], are respectively assigned to the well-known states in $^{11}$B at 14.34 MeV, 15.29 MeV, and 16.43 MeV. The isospin of these three states were previously determined to be T = 3/2, but discrepancies exist in widths and energies due to the current counting statistics and energy resolution. We have compared these states with previous measurements, and the observation of the possibly populated resonance is discussed.

Perfect State Transfer in PT-symmetric Non-Hermitian Networks

We systematically study the parity- and time-reversal (PT) symmetric non-Hermitian version of a quantum network proposed in the paper of Christandl et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 187902 (2004)]. The nature of this model shows that it is a paradigm to demonstrate the complex relationship between the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian and its Hermitian counterpart as well as a candidate in the experimental realization to simulate PT-symmetry breaking. We also show that this model allows a conditional perfect state transfer within the unbroken PT-symmetry region but not an arbitrary one. This is due to the fact that the evolution operator at a certain period is equivalent to the PT operator for the real-valued wave function in the elaborate PT-symmetric Hilbert space.

Self-sustained emission in semi-infinite non-Hermitian systems at the exceptional point

Complex potential and non-Hermitian hopping amplitude are building blocks of a non-Hermitian quantum network. Appropriate configuration, such as PT-symmetric distribution, can lead to the full real spectrum. To investigate the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon, we study the phase diagram of a semi-infinite non-Hermitian system. It consists of a finite non-Hermitian cluster and a semi-infinite lead. Based on the analysis of the solution of the concrete systems, it is shown that it can have the full real spectrum without any requirements on the symmetry and the wave function within the lead becomes a unidirectional plane wave at the exceptional point. This universal dynamical behavior is demonstrated as the persistent emission and reflectionless absorption of wave packets in the typical non-Hermitian systems containing the complex on-site potential and non-Hermitian hopping amplitude.

Scaling behavior and phase diagram of a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard system

We study scaling behavior and phase diagram of a PT-symmetric non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard model. In the free interaction case, using both analytical and numerical approaches, the metric operator for many-particle is constructed. The derived properties of the metric operator, similarity matrix and equivalent Hamiltonian reflect the fact that all the matrix elements change dramatically with diverging derivatives near the exceptional point. In the nonzero interaction case, it is found that even small on-site interaction can break the PT symmetry drastically. It is demonstrated that the scaling law can be established for the exceptional point in both small and large interaction limit. Based on perturbation and numerical methods, we also find that the phase diagram shows rich structure: there exist multiple regions of unbroken PT symmetry.

Probability-preserving evolution in a non-Hermitian two-band model

A non-Hermitian PT-symmetric system can have full real spectrum but does not ensure probability preserving time evolution, in contrast to that of a Hermitian system. We present a non-Hermitian two-band model, which is comprised of dimerized hopping terms and staggered imaginary on-site potentials, and study the dynamics in the exact PT-symmetric phase based on the exact solution. It is shown that an initial state, which does not involve two equal-momentum-vector eigenstates in different bands, obeys perfectly probability-preserving time evolution in terms of the Dirac inner product. Beyond this constriction, the quasi-Hermitian dynamical behaviors, such as non-spreading propagation and fractional revival of a Gaussian wave packet, are also observed.

Dynamics aspect of subbarrier fusion reaction in light heavy ion systems

Subbarrier fusion of the 7Li + 12C reaction is studied using an antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model (AMD) with an after burner, GEMINI. In AMD, 7Li shows an α+ t structure at its ground state and it is significantly deformed. Simulations are made near the Coulomb barrier energies, i.e., E_{cm} = 3 - 8 MeV. The total fusion cross section of the AMD + GEMINI calculations as a function of incident energy is compared to the experimental results and both are in good agreement at E_{cm} > 3 MeV. The cross section for the different residue channels of the AMD + GEMINI at E_{cm} = 5 MeV is also compared to the experimental results.

Dynamics of one-dimensional tight-binding models with arbitrary time-dependent external homogeneous fields

The exact propagators of two one-dimensional systems with time-dependent external fields are presented by following the path-integral method. It is shown that the Bloch acceleration theorem can be generalized to the impulse-momentum theorem in quantum version. We demonstrate that an evolved Gaussian wave packet always keeps its shape in an arbitrary time-dependent homogeneous driven field. Moreover, that stopping and accelerating of a wave packet can be achieved by the pulsed field in a diabatic way.

Direct detection of n-particle atomic correlations via light scattering

The creation and direct detection of n-particle atomic correlations in ensembles of atoms is investigated. For this, we study an ensemble of laser-driven atoms in which either a dipole-dipole or a Rydberg-Rydberg interaction leads to the formation of correlations between the internal degrees of freedom of the atom. We show that light scattering can be used to imprint information about these correlations onto light, and reveal how this information can be extracted from the statistical properties of the scattered light. As main result we find that observation in certain detection directions allows to directly and individually measure n-particle atomic correlations. Complementary, we discuss a method to experimentally determine the interesting detection positions.

Hermitian dynamics in a class of pseudo-Hermitian networks

We investigate the connection between pseudo-Hermitian and Hermitian descriptions for a lattice, which consists of a set of isomorphic pseudo-Hermitian clusters. We show that such non-Hermitian systems can act as Hermitian systems. This is made possible by considering the dynamics of a state involving the superposition of a single eigenmode of each isomorphic clusters. It still holds when multiple eigenmodes are involved when additional restriction on the state is imposed. This Hermitian dynamics is demonstrated for the case of an exactly solvable PT-symmetric ladder system.

Hermitian scattering behavior for the non-Hermitian scattering center

We study the scattering problem for the non-Hermitian scattering center, which consists of two Hermitian clusters with anti-Hermitian couplings between them. Counterintuitively, it is shown that it acts as a Hermitian scattering center, satisfying $|r| ^{2}+|t| ^{2}=1$, i.e., the Dirac probability current is conserved, when one of two clusters is embedded in the waveguides. This conclusion can be applied to an arbitrary parity-symmetric real Hermitian graph with additional PT-symmetric potentials, which is more feasible in experiment. Exactly solvable model is presented to illustrate the theory. Bethe ansatz solution indicates that the transmission spectrum of such a cluster displays peculiar feature arising from the non-Hermiticity of the scattering center.

Partitioning technique for a discrete quantum system

We develop the partitioning technique for quantum discrete systems. The graph consists of several subgraphs: a central graph and several branch graphs, with each branch graph being rooted by an individual node on the central one. We show that the effective Hamiltonian on the central graph can be constructed by adding additional potentials on the branch-root nodes, which generates the same result as does the the original Hamiltonian on the entire graph. Exactly solvable models are presented to demonstrate the main points of this paper.
