Characteristics and energy dependence of recurrent galactic cosmic-ray flux depressions and of a Forbush decrease with LISA Pathfinder

Galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) energy spectra observed in the inner heliosphere are modulated by the solar activity, the solar polarity and structures of solar and interplanetary origin. A high counting rate particle detector (PD) aboard LISA Pathfinder (LPF), meant for subsystems diagnostics, was devoted to the measurement of galactic cosmic-ray and solar energetic particle integral fluxes above 70 MeV n$^{-1}$ up to 6500 counts s$^{-1}$. PD data were gathered with a sampling time of 15 s. Characteristics and energy-dependence of GCR flux recurrent depressions and of a Forbush decrease dated August 2, 2016 are reported here. The capability of interplanetary missions, carrying PDs for instrument performance purposes, in monitoring the passage of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) is also discussed.

Construction and Response of a Highly Granular Scintillator-based Electromagnetic Calorimeter

A highly granular electromagnetic calorimeter with scintillator strip readout is being developed for future lepton collider experiments. A prototype of 21.5 $X_0$ depth and $180 \times 180 $mm$^2$ transverse dimensions was constructed, consisting of 2160 individually read out $10 \times 45 \times 3$ mm$^3$ scintillator strips. This prototype was tested using electrons of 2--32 GeV at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility in 2009. Deviations from linear energy response were less than 1.1\%, and the intrinsic energy resolution was determined to be $(12.5 \pm 0.1 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm0.4 (\mathrm{syst.}))\%/\sqrt{E[\mathrm{GeV}]}\oplus (1.2 \pm 0.1(\mathrm{stat.})^{+0.6}_{-0.7}(\mathrm{syst.}))\%$, where the uncertainties correspond to statistical and systematic sources, respectively.

Photometric study of three ultrashort-period contact binaries

We carried out high-precision photometric observations of three eclipsing ultrashortperiod contact binaries (USPCBs). Theoretical models were fitted to the light-curves by means of the Wilson-Devinney code. The solutions suggest that the three targets have evolved to a contact phase. The photometric results are as follows: a) 1SWASP J030749.87-365201.7, q=0.439\pm0.003, f=0.0\pm3.6%; b) 1SWASP J213252.93-441822.6, q=0.560\pm0.003, f=14.2\pm1.9%; c) 1SWASP J200059.78+054408.9, q=0.436\pm0.008, f=58.4\pm1.8%. The light curves show O'Connell effects, which can be modeled by assumed cool spots. The cool spots models are strongly supported by the night-to-night variations in the I-band light curves of 1SWASP J030749.87-365201.7. For a comparative study, we collected the whole set of 28 well-studied USPCBs with P < 0.24 day. Thus, we found that most of them (17 of 28) are in shallow contact (i.e. fill-out factors f<20%). Only 4 USPCBs have deep fill-out factors (i.e. f>50%). Generally, contact binaries with deep fill-out factors are going to merge, but it is believed that USPCBs have just evolved to a contact phase. Hence, the deep USPCB 1SWASP J200059.78+054408.9 seems to be a contradiction, making it very interesting. Particularly, 1SWASP J030749.87-365201.7 is a zero contact binary within thermal equilibrium, implying that it should be a turn-off sample as predicted by the thermal relaxation oscillation (TRO) theory.

Isospin-0 $ππ$ s-wave scattering length from twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the isospin-0 $ππ$ s-wave scattering length calculated with Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on Wilson twisted mass gauge configurations. We use three $N_f = 2$ ensembles with unitary (valence) pion mass at its physical value (250$\sim$MeV), at 240$\sim$MeV (320$\sim$MeV) and at 330$\sim$MeV (400$\sim$MeV), respectively. By using the stochastic Laplacian Heaviside quark smearing method, all quark propagation diagrams contributing to the isospin-0 $ππ$ correlation function are computed with sufficient precision. The chiral extrapolation is performed to obtain the scattering length at the physical pion mass. Our result $M_πa^\mathrm{I=0}_0 = 0.198(9)(6)$ agrees reasonably well with various experimental measurements and theoretical predictions. Since we only use one lattice spacing, certain systematics uncertainties, especially those arising from unitary breaking, are not controlled in our result.

Semantic Segmentation from Limited Training Data

We present our approach for robotic perception in cluttered scenes that led to winning the recent Amazon Robotics Challenge (ARC) 2017. Next to small objects with shiny and transparent surfaces, the biggest challenge of the 2017 competition was the introduction of unseen categories. In contrast to traditional approaches which require large collections of annotated data and many hours of training, the task here was to obtain a robust perception pipeline with only few minutes of data acquisition and training time. To that end, we present two strategies that we explored. One is a deep metric learning approach that works in three separate steps: semantic-agnostic boundary detection, patch classification and pixel-wise voting. The other is a fully-supervised semantic segmentation approach with efficient dataset collection. We conduct an extensive analysis of the two methods on our ARC 2017 dataset. Interestingly, only few examples of each class are sufficient to fine-tune even very deep convolutional neural networks for this specific task.

HIFI Spectroscopy of ${\rm H_2O}$ submm Lines in Nuclei of Actively Star Forming Galaxies

We present a systematic survey of multiple velocity-resolved H$_2$O spectra using Herschel/HIFI towards nine nearby actively star forming galaxies. The ground-state and low-excitation lines (E$_{\rm up}\,\le 130\,{\rm K}$) show profiles with emission and absorption blended together, while absorption-free medium-excitation lines ($130\,{\rm K}\, \le\, E_{\rm up}\,\le\,350\,{\rm K}$) typically display line shapes similar to CO. We analyze the HIFI observation together with archival SPIRE/PACS H$_2$O data using a state-of-the-art 3D radiative transfer code which includes the interaction between continuum and line emission. The water excitation models are combined with information on the dust- and CO spectral line energy distribution to determine the physical structure of the interstellar medium (ISM). We identify two ISM components that are common to all galaxies: A warm ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,40-70\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\,\sim\,10^5-10^6\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) phase which dominates the emission of medium-excitation H$_2$O lines. This gas phase also dominates the FIR emission and the CO intensities for $J_{\rm up} > 8$. In addition a cold ($T_{\rm dust}\,\sim\,20-30\,{\rm K}$), dense ($n({\rm H})\sim\,10^4- 10^5\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$) more extended phase is present. It outputs the emission in the low-excitation H$_2$O lines and typically also produces the prominent line absorption features. For the two ULIRGs in our sample (Arp 220 and Mrk 231) an even hotter and more compact (R$_s\,\le\,100$ pc) region is present which is possibly linked to AGN activity. We find that collisions dominate the water excitation in the cold gas and for lines with $E_{\rm up}\le300\,{\rm K}$ and $E_{\rm up}\le800\,{\rm K}$ in the warm and hot component, respectively. Higher energy levels are mainly excited by IR pumping.

First Physics Results at the Physical Pion Mass from $N_f = 2$ Wilson Twisted Mass Fermions at Maximal Twist

We present physics results from simulations of QCD using $N_f = 2$ dynamical Wilson twisted mass fermions at the physical value of the pion mass. These simulations were enabled by the addition of the clover term to the twisted mass quark action. We show evidence that compared to previous simulations without this term, the pion mass splitting due to isospin breaking is almost completely eliminated. Using this new action, we compute the masses and decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons involving the dynamical up and down as well as valence strange and charm quarks at one value of the lattice spacing, $a \approx 0.09$ fm. Further, we determine renormalized quark masses as well as their scale-independent ratios, in excellent agreement with other lattice determinations in the continuum limit. In the baryon sector, we show that the nucleon mass is compatible with its physical value and that the masses of the $Δ$ baryons do not show any sign of isospin breaking. Finally, we compute the electron, muon and tau lepton anomalous magnetic moments and show the results to be consistent with extrapolations of older ETMC data to the continuum and physical pion mass limits. We mostly find remarkably good agreement with phenomenology, even though we cannot take the continuum and thermodynamic limits.

Charge-induced force-noise on free-falling test masses: results from LISA Pathfinder

We report on electrostatic measurements made on board the European Space Agency mission LISA Pathfinder. Detailed measurements of the charge-induced electrostatic forces exerted on free-falling test masses (TMs) inside the capacitive gravitational reference sensor are the first made in a relevant environment for a space-based gravitational wave detector. Employing a combination of charge control and electric-field compensation, we show that the level of charge-induced acceleration noise on a single TM can be maintained at a level close to 1.0 fm/s^2/sqrt(Hz) across the 0.1-100 mHz frequency band that is crucial to an observatory such as LISA. Using dedicated measurements that detect these effects in the differential acceleration between the two test masses, we resolve the stochastic nature of the TM charge build up due to interplanetary cosmic rays and the TM charge-to-force coupling through stray electric fields in the sensor. All our measurements are in good agreement with predictions based on a relatively simple electrostatic model of the LISA Pathfinder instrument.

Isospin-0 $ππ$ scattering from twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the isospin-0 $ππ$ s-wave scattering length calculated in twisted mass lattice QCD. We use three $N_f = 2$ ensembles with unitary pion mass at its physical value, 240~MeV and 330~MeV respectively. We also use a large set of $N_f = 2 + 1 +1$ ensembles with unitary pion masses varying in the range of 230~MeV - 510~MeV at three different values of the lattice spacing. A mixed action approach with the Osterwalder-Seiler action in the valence sector is adopted to circumvent the complications arising from isospin symmetry breaking of the twisted mass quark action. Due to the relatively large lattice artefacts in the $N_f = 2 + 1 +1$ ensembles, we do not present the scattering lengths for these ensembles. Instead, taking the advantage of the many different pion masses of these ensembles, we qualitatively discuss the pion mass dependence of the scattering properties of this channel based on the results from the $N_f = 2 + 1 +1$ ensembles. The scattering length is computed for the $N_f = 2$ ensembles and the chiral extrapolation is performed. At the physical pion mass, our result $M_πa^\mathrm{I=0}_0 = 0.198(9)(6)$ agrees reasonably well with various experimental measurements and theoretical predictions.

Unusual nodal behaviors of the superconducting gap in the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{0.65}$Ru$_{0.35}$)$_2$As$_2$: Effects of spin-orbit coupling

We have investigated the superconducting gap of optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.65}$Ru$_{0.35}$)$_2$As$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) using bulk-sensitive 7 eV laser and synchrotron radiation. It was found that the gap is isotropic in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane both on the electron and hole Fermi surfaces (FSs). The gap magnitudes of two resolved hole FSs show similar $k_z$ dependences and decrease as $k_z$ approaches $\sim$ 2$π$/$c$ (i.e., around the Z point) unlike the other Fe-based superconductors reported so far, where the superconducting gap of only one hole FS shows a strong $k_z$ dependence. This unique gap structure can be understood in the scenario that the $d_{z^2}$ orbital character is mixed into both hole FSs due to the finite spin-orbit coupling between almost degenerate FSs and is reproduced by calculations within the random phase approximation including the spin-orbit coupling.

$μ$SR and magnetometry study of superconducting 5% Pt doped IrTe$_2$

We present magnetometry and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements of the superconducting dichalcogenide Ir$_{0.95}$Pt$_{0.05}$Te$_2$. From both sets of measurements we calculate the penetration depth and thence superfluid density as a function of temperature. The temperature dependence of the superfluid densities from both sets of data indicate fully gapped superconductivity that can be fit to a conventional s-wave model and yiel fitting parameters consistent with a BCS weak coupling superconductor. We therefore see no evidence for exotic superconductivity in Ir$_{0.95}$Pt$_{0.05}$Te$_2$.

Discovery of an X-ray Emitting Contact Binary System 2MASS J11201034$-$2201340

We report the detection of orbital modulation, a model solution, and X-ray properties of a newly discovered contact binary, 2MASS J11201034$-$2201340. We serendipitously found this X-ray point source outside the error ellipse when searching for possible X-ray counterparts of $γ$-ray millisecond pulsars among the unidentified objects detected by the {\it Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}. The optical counterpart of the X-ray source (unrelated to the $γ$-ray source) was then identified using archival databases. The long-term CRTS survey detected a precise signal with a period of $P=0.28876208(56)$ days. A follow-up observation made by the SLT telescope of Lulin Observatory revealed the binary nature of the object. Utilizing archived photometric data of multi-band surveys, we construct the spectral energy distribution, which is well fitted by a K2V spectral template. The fitting result of the orbital profile using the Wilson--Devinney code suggests that 2MASS J11201034-2201340 is a short-period A-type contact binary and the more massive component has a cool spot. The X-ray emission was first noted in observations made by \swift\, then further confirmed and characterized by an \xmm\ observation. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law or thermal Bremsstrahlung. Unfortunately, we could not observe significant X-ray orbital modulation. Finally, according to the spectral energy distribution, this system is estimated to be 690 pc from Earth with a calculated X-ray intensity of $(0.7-1.5)\times 10^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is in the expected range of an X-ray emitting contact binary.

Ne X X-ray Emission due to Charge Exchange in M82

Recent X-ray observations of star-forming galaxies such as M82 have shown the Ly beta/Ly alpha line ratio of Ne X to be in excess of predictions for thermal electron impact excitation. Here we demonstrate that the observed line ratio may be due to charge exchange and can be used to constrain the ion kinetic energy to be <500 eV/u. This is accomplished by computing spectra and line ratios via a range of theoretical methods and comparing these to experiments with He over astrophysically relevant collision energies. The charge exchange emission spectra calculations were performed for Ne[10+] +H and Ne[10+] +He using widely applied approaches including the atomic orbital close coupling, classical trajectory Monte Carlo, and multichannel Landau- Zener (MCLZ) methods. A comparison of the results from these methods indicates that for the considered energy range and neutrals (H, He) the so-called "low-energy l-distribution" MCLZ method provides the most likely reliable predictions.

Antiferromagnetism and Hidden Order in Isoelectronic Doping of URu$_2$Si$_2$

We present muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and susceptibility measurements on single crystals of isoelectronically doped URu$_{2-x}$T$_x$Si$_2$ (T = Fe, Os) for doping levels up to 50\%. Zero Field (ZF) $μ$SR measurements show long-lived oscillations demonstrating that an antiferromagnetic state exists down to low doping levels for both Os and Fe dopants. The measurements further show an increase in the internal field with doping for both Fe and Os. Comparison of the local moment - hybridization crossover temperature from susceptibility measurements and our magnetic transition temperature shows that changes in hybridization, rather than solely chemical pressure, are important in driving the evolution of magnetic order with doping.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: isospin-2 $ππ$ scattering length

We present results for the $I=2$ $ππ$ scattering length using $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass lattice QCD for three values of the lattice spacing and a range of pion mass values. Due to the use of Laplacian Heaviside smearing our statistical errors are reduced compared to previous lattice studies. A detailed investigation of systematic effects such as discretisation effects, volume effects, and pollution of excited and thermal states is performed. After extrapolation to the physical point using chiral perturbation theory at NLO we obtain $M_πa_0=-0.0442(2)_\mathrm{stat}(^{+4}_{-0})_\mathrm{sys}$.

Se content $x$ dependence of electron correlation strength in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$

The iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ on the Te-rich side is known to exhibit the strongest electron correlations among the Fe-based superconductors, and is non-superconducting for $x$ < 0.1. In order to understand the origin of such behaviors, we have performed ARPES studies of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4). The obtained mass renormalization factors for different energy bands are qualitatively consistent with DFT + DMFT calculations. Our results provide evidence for strong orbital dependence of mass renormalization, and systematic data which help us to resolve inconsistencies with other experimental data. The unusually strong orbital dependence of mass renormalization in Te-rich Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ arises from the dominant contribution to the Fermi surface of the $d_{xy}$ band, which is the most strongly correlated and may contribute to the suppression of superconductivity.

In-plane electronic anisotropy in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase of isovalent-substituted Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We have studied the anisotropy in the in-plane resistivity and the electronic structure of isovalent Ru-substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase using well-annealed crystals. The anisotropy in the residual resistivity component increases in proportional to the Ru dopant concentration, as in the case of Co-doped compounds. On the other hand, both the residual resistivity and the resistivity anisotropy induced by isovalent Ru substitution is found to be one order of magnitude smaller than those induced by heterovalent Co substitution. Combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results, which show almost the same anisotropic band structure both for the parent and Ru-substituted compounds, we confirm the scenario that the anisotropy in the residual resistivity arises from anisotropic impurity scattering in the magneto-structurally ordered phase rather than directly from the anisotropic band structure of that phase.
