Reversed anisotropy of the in-plane resistivity in the antiferromagnetic phase of iron tellurides

We systematically investigated the anisotropic in-plane resistivity of the iron telluride including three kinds of impurity atoms: excess Fe, Se substituted for Te, and Cu substituted for Fe. Sizable resistivity anisotropy was found in the magneto-structurally ordered phase whereas the sign is opposite ($ρ_a$ $>$ $ρ_b$, where the $b$-axis parameter is shorter than the $a$-axis one) to that observed in the transition-metal doped iron arsenides ($ρ_a$ $<$ $ρ_b$). On the other hand, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the resistivity anisotropy in the iron tellurides is correlated with the amount of impurities, implying that the resistivity anisotropy originates from an exotic impurity effect like that in the iron arsenides. This suggests that the anisotropic carrier scattering by impurities is a universal phenomenon in the magneto-structurally ordered phase of the iron-based materials.

(Sr,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2: A new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with the hexagonal CaAl2Si2 type structure

A new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (Sr,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2 is reported, in which charge and spin doping are decoupled via Sr/Na and Zn/Mn substitutions, respectively, being distinguished from classic (Ga,Mn)As where charge & spin doping are simultaneously integrated. Different from the recently reported ferromagnetic (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2, this material crystallizes into the hexagonal CaAl2Si2-type structure. Ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature up to 20 K has been observed from magnetization. The muon spin relaxation measurements suggest that the exchange interaction between Mn moments of this new system could be different to the earlier DMS systems. This system provides an important means for studying ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

(Ca,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2: a new spin & charge doping decoupled diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with hexagonal CaAl2Si2 structure

Here we report the successful synthesis of a spin- & charge-decoupled diluted magnetic semiconductor (Ca,Na)(Zn,Mn)2As2, crystallizing into the hexagonal CaAl2Si2 structure. The compound shows a ferromagnetic transition with a Curie temperature up to 33 K with 10% Na doping, which gives rise to carrier density of np~10^20 cm^-3. The new DMS is a soft magnetic material with HC<400 Oe. The anomalous Hall effect is observed below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature. With increasing Mn doping, ferromagnetic order is accompanied by an interaction between the local spin and mobile charge, giving rise to a minimum in resistivity at low temperatures and localizing the conduction electrons. The system provides an ideal platform for studying the interaction of the local spins and conduction electrons.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior Close to a Quantum Critical Point in a Ferromagnetic State without Local Moments

A quantum critical point (QCP) occurs upon chemical doping of the weak itinerant ferromagnet Sc_{3.1}In. Remarkable for a system with no local moments, the QCP is accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, manifested in the logarithmic divergence of the specific heat both in the ferro- and the paramagnetic states. Sc_{3.1}In displays critical scaling and NFL behavior in the ferromagnetic state, akin to what had been observed only in f-electron, local moment systems. With doping, critical scaling is observed close to the QCP, as the critical exponents, and delta, gamma and beta have weak composition dependence, with delta nearly twice, and beta almost half of their respective mean-field values. The unusually large paramagnetic moment mu_PM~1.3 mu_B/F.U. is nearly composition-independent. Evidence for strong spin fluctuations, accompanying the QCP at x_c = 0.035 +- 0.005, may be ascribed to the reduced dimensionality of Sc_{3.1}In, associated with the nearly one-dimensional Sc-In chains.

Novel Itinerant Antiferromagnet TiAu

Itinerant and local moment magnetism have substantively different origins, and require distinct theoretical treatment. A unified theory of magnetism has long been sought after, and remains elusive, mainly due to the limited number of known itinerant magnetic systems. In the case of the two such examples discovered several decades ago, the itinerant ferromagnets ZrZn_2 and Sc_3In, the understanding of their magnetic ground states draws on the existence of 3d electrons subject to strong spin fluctuations. Similarly, in Cr, an elemental itinerant antiferromagnet (IAFM) with a spin density wave (SDW) ground state, its 3d character has been deemed crucial to it being magnetic. Here we report the discovery of the first IAFM compound with no magnetic constituents, TiAu. Antiferromagnetic order occurs below a Neel temperature T_N ~ 36 K, about an order of magnitude smaller than in Cr, rendering the spin fluctuations in TiAu more important at low temperatures. This new IAFM challenges the currently limited understanding of weak itinerant antiferromagnetism, while providing long sought-after insights into the effects of spin fluctuations in itinerant electron systems.

MuSR Investigation and Suppression of TC by overdoped Li in Diluted Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Li1+y(Zn1-xMnx)P

We use muon spin relaxation (muSR) to investigate the magnetic properties of a bulk form diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (DFS) Li1.15(Zn0.9Mn0.1)P with T_C ~ 22 K. MuSR results confirm the gradual development of ferromagnetic ordering below T_C with a nearly 100% magnetic ordered volume. Despite its low carrier density, the relation between static internal field and Curie temperature observed for Li(Zn,Mn)P is consistent with the trend found in (Ga,Mn)As and other bulk DFSs, indicating these systems share a common mechanism for the ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Li1+y(Zn1-xMnx)P has the advantage of decoupled carrier and spin doping, where Mn2+ substitution for Zn2+ introduces spins and Li+ off-stoichiometry provides carriers. This advantage enables us to investigate the influence of overdoped Li on the ferromagnetic ordered state. Overdoping Li suppresses both T_C and saturation moments for a certain amount of spins, which indicates that more carriers are detrimental to the ferromagnetic exchange interaction, and that a delicate balance between charge and spin densities is required to achieve highest T_C.

Photometric Investigation of the Total-Eclipsing Contact Binary V12 in the Intermediate-age Open Cluster NGC 7789

NGC 7789 is an intermediate-age open cluster with an age that is similar to the mean age of contact binary stars. V12 is a bright UMa-type binary star with an orbital period of 0.397 day. The first complete light curves of V12 in V, R, and I bands are presented and analyzed with the W-D (Wilson and Devinney) method. The results shows that V12 is an intermediate-contact binary (f = 43%) with a mass ratio of 3.848, and it is a W-type contact binary where the less massive component is slightly hotter than the more massive one. The asymmetries of the light curves are explained by the presence of a dark spot on the more massive component. The derived orbital inclination (i = 83.6o) indicates that it is a total eclipsing binary, which suggests that the determined parameters are reliable. The orbital period may show a long-term increase at a rate of P = +2.48 x 10-6 days/year that reveals a rapid mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one. However, more observations are needed to confirm this conclusion. The presence of an intermediate-contact binary in an intermediate-age open cluster may suggest that some contact binaries have a very short pre-contact timescale. The presence of a third body or/and stellar collision may help to shorten the pre-contact evolution.

Unconventional Magnetic Ground State in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report low temperature specific heat and muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This system is believed to possess a spin Hamiltonian supporting a Quantum Spin Ice (QSI) ground state and to display sample variation in its low temperature heat capacity. Our two samples exhibit extremes of this sample variation, yet our $μ$SR measurements indicate a similar disordered low temperature state down to 16 mK in both. We report little temperature dependence to the spin relaxation and no evidence for ferromagnetic order, in contrast to recent reports by Chang \emph{et al.} (Nat. Comm. {\bf 3}, 992 (2012)). Transverse field (TF) $μ$SR measurements show changes in the temperature dependence of the muon Knight shift which coincide with heat capacity anomalies. We are therefore led to propose that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a hidden order ground state below $T_c\sim265$ mK where the nature of the ordered state is unknown but distinct from simple long range order.

New Diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Li(Zn,Mn)P with decoupled charge and spin doping

We report the discovery of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor, Li(Zn,Mn)P, in which charge and spin are introduced independently via lithium off-stoichiometry and the isovalent substitution of Mn2+ for Zn2+, respectively. Isostructural to (Ga,Mn)As, Li(Zn,Mn)P was found to be a p-type ferromagnetic semiconductor with excess Lithium providing charge doping. First principles calculations indicate that excess Li is favored to partially occupy the Zn site, leading to hole doping. Ferromagnetism is mediated in semiconducting samples of relative low mobile carriers with a small coercive force, indicating an easy spin flip.

Correlations and Renormalization of the Electron-Phonon Coupling in the Honeycomb Hubbard Ladder and Superconductivity in Polyacene

We have performed extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of the Hubbard model on a honeycomb ladder. The band structure (with Hubbard U=0) exhibits an unusual quadratic band touching at half filling, which is associated with a quantum Lifshitz transition from a band insulator to a metal. %SAK as a function of a third-neighbor hopping parameter. For one electron per site, non-zero $U$ drives the system into an insulating state in which there is no pair-binding between added electrons; this implies that superconductivity driven directly by the repulsive electron-electron interactions is unlikely in the regime of small doping, $x\ll 1$. However, the divergent density of states as $x\to 0$, the large values of the phonon frequencies, and an unusual correlation induced enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling imply that lightly doped polyacenes, which approximately realize this structure, are good candidates for high temperature electron-phonon driven superconductivity.

(La1-xBax)(Zn1-xMnx)AsO: A Two Dimensional "1111" Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor in Bulk Form

We report the synthesis and characterization of a bulk diluted magnetic semiconductor (La1-xBax)(Zn1-xMnx)AsO (0 <= x <= 0.2) with a layered crystal structure identical to that of the "1111" FeAs superconductors. No ferromagnetic order occurs for (Zn,Mn) substitution in the parent compound LaZnAsO without charge doping. Together with carrier doping via (La,Ba) sub- stitution, a small amount of Mn substituting for Zn results in ferromagnetic order with TC up to ~40 K, although the system remains semiconducting. Muon spin relaxation measurements confirm the development of ferromagnetic order in the entire volume, with the relationship between the internal field and TC consistent with the trend found in (Ga,Mn)As, the "111" Li(Zn,Mn)As, and the "122" (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 systems.

Minimum Error Tree Decomposition

This paper describes a generalization of previous methods for constructing tree-structured belief network with hidden variables. The major new feature of the described method is the ability to produce a tree decomposition even when there are errors in the correlation data among the input variables. This is an important extension of existing methods since the correlational coefficients usually cannot be measured with precision. The technique involves using a greedy search algorithm that locally minimizes an error function.

Studies on fast triggering and high precision tracking with Resistive Plate Chambers

We report on studies of fast triggering and high-precision tracking using Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Two beam tests were carried out with the 180 GeV muon beam at CERN using RPCs with gas gaps of 1.00 or 1.15 mm and equipped with readout strips with 1.27 mm pitch. This is the first beam test of RPCs with fine-pitch readout strips that explores simultaneously precision tracking and triggering capabilities. RPC signals were acquired with precision timing and charge integrating readout electronics at both ends of the strips. The time resolution was measured to be better than 600 ps and the average spatial resolution was found to be 220 um using charge information and 287 um using timing information. The dual-ended readout allows the determination of the average and the difference of the signal arrival times. The average time was found to be independent of the incident particle position along the strip and is useful for triggering purposes. The time difference yielded a determination of the hit position with a precision of 7.5 mm along the strip. These results demonstrate the feasibility using RPCs for fast and high-resolution triggering and tracking.

Nitrogen-Functionalized Graphene Nanoflakes (GNFs:N): Tunable Photoluminescence and Electronic Structures

This study investigates the strong photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray excited optical luminescence observed in nitrogen-functionalized 2D graphene nanoflakes (GNFs:N), which arise from the significantly enhanced density of states in the region of π states and the gap between π and π* states. The increase in the number of the sp2 clusters in the form of pyridine-like N-C, graphite-N-like, and the C=O bonding and the resonant energy transfer from the N and O atoms to the sp2 clusters were found to be responsible for the blue shift and the enhancement of the main PL emission feature. The enhanced PL is strongly related to the induced changes of the electronic structures and bonding properties, which were revealed by the X-ray absorption near-edge structure, X-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonance inelastic X-ray scattering. The study demonstrates that PL emission can be tailored through appropriate tuning of the nitrogen and oxygen contents in GNFs and pave the way for new optoelectronic devices.

Optical flares and flaring oscillations on the M-type eclipsing binary CU Cnc

We report here the discovery of an optical flare observed in R band from the red-dwarf eclipsing binary CU Cnc whose component stars are at the upper boundary of full convection (M1=0.43 and M2=0.4M0, M0 is the solar mass). The amplitude of the flare is the largest among those detected in R band (~0.52mag) and the duration time is about 73 minutes. As those observed on the Sun, quasi-periodic oscillations were seen during and after the flare. Three more R-band flares were found by follow up monitoring. In total, this binary was monitored photometrically by using R filter for 79.9 hours, which reveals a R-band flare rate about 0.05 flares per hour. These detections together with other strong chromospheric and coronal activities, i.e., very strong H_alpha and H_beta emission features and an EUV and X-ray source, indicate that it has very strong magnetic activity. Therefore, the apparent faintness (~1.4 magnitude in V) of CU Cnc compared with other single red dwarfs of the same mass can be plausibly explained by the high coverage of the dark spots.

A Circumbinary Planet in Orbit Around the Short-Period White-Dwarf Eclipsing Binary RR Cae

By using six new determined mid-eclipse times together with those collected from the literature, we found that the Observed-Calculated (O-C) curve of RR Cae shows a cyclic change with a period of 11.9 years and an amplitude of 14.3s, while it undergoes an upward parabolic variation (revealing a long-term period increase at a rate of dP/dt =+4.18(+-0.20)x10^(-12). The cyclic change was analyzed for the light-travel time effect that arises from the gravitational influence of a third companion. The mass of the third body was determined to be M_3*sin i' = 4.2(+-0.4) M_{Jup} suggesting that it is a circumbinary giant planet when its orbital inclination is larger than 17.6 degree. The orbital separation of the circumbinary planet from the central eclipsing binary is about 5.3(+-0.6)AU. The period increase is opposite to the changes caused by angular momentum loss via magnetic braking or/and gravitational radiation, nor can it be explained by the mass transfer between both components because of its detached configuration. These indicate that the observed upward parabolic change is only a part of a long-period (longer than 26.3 years) cyclic variation, which may reveal the presence of another giant circumbinary planet in a wide orbit.

Homogenization of Rough Surfaces: Effective Surface Stress and Superficial Elasticity

Relating microstructure to properties, electromagnetic, mechanical, thermal and their couplings has been a major focus of mechanics, physics and materials science. The majority of the literature focuses on deriving homogenized constitutive responses for macroscopic composites relating effective properties to various microstructural details. Due to large surface to volume ratio, phenomena at the nanoscale require consideration of surface energy effects and the latter are frequently used to interpret size-effects in material behavior. Elucidation of the effect of surface roughness on the surface stress and elastic behavior is relatively under-studied and quite relevant to the behavior of nanostructures. In this work, we present derivations that relate both periodic and random roughness to the effective surface elastic behavior. We find that the residual surface stress is hardly affected by roughness while the superficial elasticity properties are dramatically altered and, importantly, may also result in a change in its sign - this has ramifications in interpretation of sensing based on frequency measurement changes due to surface elasticity. We show that the square of resonance frequency of a cantilever beam with rough surface decreases as much as three times of its value for flat surface.

Properties and Applications of Programs with Monotone and Convex Constraints

We study properties of programs with monotone and convex constraints. We extend to these formalisms concepts and results from normal logic programming. They include the notions of strong and uniform equivalence with their characterizations, tight programs and Fages Lemma, program completion and loop formulas. Our results provide an abstract account of properties of some recent extensions of logic programming with aggregates, especially the formalism of lparse programs. They imply a method to compute stable models of lparse programs by means of off-the-shelf solvers of pseudo-boolean constraints, which is often much faster than the smodels system.
