A system for measuring auto- and cross-correlation of current noise at low temperatures

We describe the construction and operation of a two-channel noise detection system for measuring power and cross spectral densities of current fluctuations near 2 MHz in electronic devices at low temperatures. The system employs cryogenic amplification and fast-Fourier-transform based spectral measurement. The gain and electron temperature are calibrated using Johnson noise thermometry. Full shot noise of 100 pA can be resolved with an integration time of 10 s. We report a demonstration measurement of bias-dependent current noise in a gate defined GaAs/AlGaAs quantum point contact.

Shot-Noise Signatures of 0.7 Structure and Spin in a Quantum Point Contact

We report simultaneous measurement of shot noise and dc transport in a quantum point contact as a function of source-drain bias, gate voltage, and in-plane magnetic field. Shot noise at zero field exhibits an asymmetry related to the 0.7 structure in conductance. The asymmetry in noise evolves smoothly into the symmetric signature of spin-resolved electron transmission at high field. Comparison to a phenomenological model with density-dependent level splitting yields good quantitative agreement.

Disorder mediated splitting of the cyclotron resonance in two-dimensional electron systems

We perform a direct study of the magnitude of the anomalous splitting in the cyclotron resonance (CR) of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) as a function of sample disorder. In a series of AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, identical except for a range of carbon doping in the well, we find the CR splitting to vanish at high sample mobilities but to increase dramatically with increasing impurity density and electron scattering rates. This observation lends strong support to the conjecture that the non-zero wavevector, roton-like minimum in the dispersion of 2D magnetoplasmons comes into resonance with the CR, with the two modes being coupled via disorder.

Bichromatic Microwave Photoresistance of Two-Dimensional Electron System

We explore experimentally bichromatic (frequencies $ω_1$ and $ω_2$) photoresistance of a two-dimensional electron system in the regimes of microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero-resistance states. We find bichromatic resistance to be well described by a superposition of $ω_1$ and $ω_2$ components, provided that both monochromatic resistances are positive. This relation holds even when the oscillation amplitudes are small and one could expect additive contributions from monochromatic photoresistances. In contrast, whenever a zero-resistance state is formed by one of the frequencies, such superposition relation breaks down and the bichromatic resistance is strongly suppressed.

Spontaneous spin polarization in quantum point contacts

We use spatial spin separation by a magnetic focusing technique to probe the polarization of quantum point contacts. The point contacts are fabricated from p-type GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. A finite polarization is measured in the low-density regime, when the conductance of a point contact is tuned to <2e^2/h. Polarization is stronger in samples with a well defined ``0.7 structure''

Spin excitations in the Fractional Quantum Hall regime at $ν\lesssim1/3$

We report inelastic light scattering experiments in the fractional quantum Hall regime at filling factors $ν\lesssim1/3$. A spin mode is observed below the Zeeman energy. The filling factor dependence of the mode energy is consistent with its assignment to spin flip excitations of composite fermions with four attached flux quanta ($ϕ$=4). Our findings reveal a composite fermion Landau level structure in the $ϕ$=4 sequence.

Reentrant anisotropic phases in a two-dimensional hole system

Anisotropic charge transport is observed in a two-dimensional (2D) hole system in a perpendicular magnetic field at filling factors nu=7/2 and nu=11/2 for temperatures below 150mK. In stark contrast, the transport at nu=9/2 is isotropic for all temperatures. Our results for a two-dimensional hole system differ substantially from 2D electron transport where no anisotropy has been observed at nu=7/2, the strongest anisotropy occurs at nu=9/2, and reentrant behavior is not evident. We attribute this difference to strong spin-orbit coupling in the hole system.

Resistively-Detected NMR in a Two-Dimensional Electron System near $ν= 1$: Clues to the Origin of the Dispersive Lineshape

Resistively-detected NMR measurements on 2D electron systems near the $ν= 1$ quantum Hall state are reported. In contrast to recent results of Gervais \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 94$, 196803 (2005)], a dispersive lineshape is found at all RF powers studied and Korringa-like nuclear spin-lattice relaxation is observed. The shape of the unexplained dispersive lineshape is found to invert when the temperature derivative of the longitudinal resistance changes sign. This suggests that both Zeeman and thermal effects are important to resistively-detected NMR in this regime.

Interaction Effects and Pseudogap in Two-Dimensional Lateral Tunnel Junctions

Tunneling characteristics of a two-dimensional lateral tunnel junction (2DLTJ) are reported. A pseudogap on the order of Coulomb energy is detected in the tunneling density of states (TDOS) when two identical two-dimensional electron systems are laterally separated by a thin energy barrier. The Coulombic pseudogap remains robust well into the quantum Hall regime until it is overshadowed by the cyclotron gap in the TDOS. The pseudogap is modified by in-plane magnetic field, demonstrating a non-trivial effect of in-plane magnetic field on the electron-electron interaction.

Resistance scaling for Composite Fermions in the presence of a density gradient

The magnetoresistance, Rxx, at even-denominator fractional fillings, of an ultra high quality two-dimensional electron system at T ~ 35 mK is observed to be strictly linear in magnetic field, B. While at 35mK Rxx is dominated by the integer and fractional quantum Hall states, at T~1.2K an almost perfect linear relationship between Rxx vs B emerges over the whole magnetic field range except for spikes at the integer quantum Hall states. This linear Rxx cannot be understood within the Composite Fermion model, but can be explained through the existence of a density gradient in our sample.

Multiphoton processes in microwave photoresistance of 2D electron system

We extend our studies of microwave photoresistance of ultra-high mobility two-dimensional electron system (2DES) into the high-intensity, non-linear regime employing both monochromatic and bichromatic radiation. Under high-intensity monochromatic radiation $ω$ we observe new zero-resistance states (ZRS) which correspond to rational values of $ε=ω/ω_C$ ($ω_C$ is the cyclotron frequency) and can be associated with multiphoton processes. %Formation of these rational ZRS is accompanied by a dramatic reconstruction of the photoresistance spectrum which reveals diminishing, narrowing, and phase reduction of the resistance peaks, as well as overall suppression of resistance at $ε<1/2$. Under bichromatic radiation $ω_1,ω_2$ we discover new resistance minimum, possibly a precursor of bichromatic ZRS, which seems to originate from a frequency mixing process, $ω_1+ω_2$. These findings indicate that multiphoton processes play important roles in the physics of non-equilibrium transport of microwave-driven 2DES, and suggest new directions for theoretical and experimental studies.

Spin Susceptibility of a 2D Electron System in GaAs towards the Weak Interaction Region

We determine the spin susceptibility $χ$ in the weak interaction regime of a tunable, high quality, two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. The band structure effects, modifying mass and g-factor, are carefully taken into accounts since they become appreciable for the large electron densities of the weak interaction regime. When properly normalized, $χ$ decreases monotonically from 3 to 1.1 with increasing density over our experimental range from 0.1 to $4\times10^{11} cm^{-2}$. In the high density limit, $χ$ tends correctly towards $χ\to 1$ and compare well with recent theory.

Negative Differential Resistance and Astability of the Wigner Solid

We report an unusual breakdown of the magnetically induced Wigner solid in an exceptional two-dimensional electron gas. The current-voltage characteristic is found to be hysteretic in the voltage biased setup and has a region of negative differential resistance in the current biased setup. When the sample is current biased in the region of negative differential resistance, the voltage on and the current through the sample develop spontaneous narrow band oscillations.

Splitting of Long-Wavelength Modes of the Fractional Quantum Hall Liquid at $ν=1/3$

Resonant inelastic light scattering experiments at $ν=1/3$ reveal a novel splitting of the long wavelength modes in the low energy spectrum of quasiparticle excitations in the charge degree of freedom. We find a single peak at small wavevectors that splits into two distinct modes at larger wavevectors. The evidence of well-defined dispersive behavior at small wavevectors indicates a coherence of the quantum fluid in the micron length scale. We evaluate interpretations of long wavelength modes of the electron liquid.

The microwave induced resistance response of a high mobility 2DEG from the quasi-classical limit to the quantum Hall regime

Microwave induced resistance oscillations (MIROs) were studied experimentally over a very wide range of frequencies ranging from ~20 GHz up to ~4 THz, and from the quasi-classical regime to the quantum Hall effect regime. At low frequencies regular MIROs were observed, with a periodicity determined by the ratio of the microwave to cyclotron frequencies. For frequencies below 150 GHz the magnetic field dependence of MIROs waveform is well described by a simplified version of an existing theoretical model, where the damping is controlled by the width of the Landau levels. In the THz frequency range MIROs vanish and only pronounced resistance changes are observed at the cyclotron resonance. The evolution of MIROs with frequency are presented and discussed.

Imaging Transport Resonances in the Quantum Hall Effect

We use a scanning capacitance probe to image transport in the quantum Hall system. Applying a DC bias voltage to the tip induces a ring-shaped incompressible strip (IS) in the 2D electron system (2DES) that moves with the tip. At certain tip positions, short-range disorder in the 2DES creates a quantum dot island in the IS. These islands enable resonant tunneling across the IS, enhancing its conductance by more than four orders of magnitude. The images provide a quantitative measure of disorder and suggest resonant tunneling as the primary mechanism for transport across ISs.

Surface Acoustic Wave Propagation and Inhomogeneities in Low Density Two-Dimensional Electron Systems Near the Metal-Insulator Transition

We have measured the surface acoustic wave velocity shift in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure containing a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in a low-density regime ($<$ $10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$) at zero magnetic field. The interaction of the surface acoustic wave with the 2DES is not well described by a simple model using low-frequency conductivity measurements. We speculate that this conflict is a result of inhomogeneities in the 2DES which become very important at low density. This has implications for the putative metal-insulator transition in two dimensions.

Spin-charge separation and localization in one-dimension

We report on measurements of quantum many-body modes in ballistic wires and their dependence on Coulomb interactions, obtained from tunneling between two parallel wires in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure while varying electron density. We observe two spin modes and one charge mode of the coupled wires, and map the dispersion velocities of the modes down to a critical density, at which spontaneous localization is observed. Theoretical calculations of the charge velocity agree well with the data, although they also predict an additional charge mode that is not observed. The measured spin velocity is found to be smaller than theoretically predicted.
