Microwave resonances of the bubble phases in 1/4 and 3/4 filled higher Landau levels

We have measured the diagonal conductivity in the microwave regime of an ultrahigh mobility two dimensional electron system. We find a sharp resonance in Re[sigma_{xx}] versus frequency when nu > 4 and the partial filling of the highest Landau level, nu^*, is ~ 1/4 or 3/4 and temperatures < 0.1 K. The resonance appears for a range of nu^* from 0.20 to 0.37 and again from 0.62 to 0.82. the peak frequency, f_{pk} changes from ~ 500 to ~ 150 as nu^* = 1/2 is approached. This range of f_{pk} shows no dependence on nu where the resonance is observed. The quality factor, Q, of the resonance is maximum at ~ nu^* = 0.25 and 0.74. We interpret the resonance as due to a pinning mode of the bubble phase crystal.

Evidence for 2k_F Electron-Electron Scattering Processes in Coulomb Drag

Measurements and calculations of Coulomb drag between two low density, closely spaced, two-dimensional electron systems are reported. The experimentally measured drag exceeds that calculated in the random phase approximation by a significant, and density dependent, factor. Studies of the dependence of the measured drag on the difference in density between the two layers clearly demonstrate that previously ignored q=2k_F scattering processes can be very important to the drag at low densities and small layer separations.

Universal behaviour in the floating up of quantum Hall extended states as B -> 0

We investigate the relationship between the quantum Hall extended states and the apparent B=0 `metal'-insulator transition in extremely low density, high quality two-dimensional n-GaAs systems (μ_{peak} ~ 2 x 10^7 cm^2/Vs). The combination of small effective mass and high quality allow us to resolve the continued floating up in energy of the extended states down to very low magnetic fields, B=0.015T, despite an apparent `metal'-insulator transition at B = 0. We present a modified global phase diagram which brings together conflicting data in the literature from different material systems, and reconciles the differences as to the fate of the extended states as B -> 0.

Correlation lengths of Wigner crystal order in two dimensional electron system at high magnetic field

The insulator terminating the fractional quantum Hall series at low Landau level filling νis generally taken to be a pinned Wigner crystal (WC), and exhibits a microwave resonance that is interpreted as a WC pinning mode. Systematically studying the resonance in a high quality sample for carrier densities, n, between 1.8 and 5.7 x 10^{10} cm^-2, we find maxima in resonance peak frequency, f_pk, vs magnetic field, B. L, the domain size, or correlation length of Wigner crystalline order, is calculated from f_pk. For each n, L vs νtends at low νtoward a straight line with intercept; the linear fit is accurate over as much as a factor of 5 range of ν. We interpret the striking linear behavior as due to B compressing the electron wavefunctions, to alter the effective electron-impurity interaction.

Spectroscopic Evidence for the Localization of Skyrmions near Nu=1 as T->0

Optically pumped nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of Ga-71 spectra were carried out in an n-doped GaAs/Al0.1Ga0.9As multiple quantum well sample near the integer quantum Hall ground state Nu=1. As the temperature is lowered (down to T~0.3 K), a ``tilted plateau'' emerges in the Knight shift data, which is a novel experimental signature of quasiparticle localization. The dependence of the spectra on both T and Nu suggests that the localization is a collective process. The frozen limit spectra appear to rule out a 2D lattice of conventional skyrmions.

Density Induced Interchange of Anisotropy Axes at Half-Filled High Landau Levels

We observe density induced 90$^{\circ}$ rotations of the anisotropy axes in transport measurements at half-filled high Landau levels in the two dimensional electron system, where stripe states are proposed ($ν$=9/2, 11/2, etc). Using a field effect transistor, we find the transition density to be $2.9\times10^{11}$cm$^{-2}$ at $ν$=9/2. Hysteresis is observed in the vicinity of the transition. We construct a phase boundary in the filling factor-magnetic field plane in the regime $4.4<ν<4.6$. An in-plane magnetic field applied along either anisotropy axis always stabilizes the low density orientation of the stripes.

The Onset of Anisotropic Transport of Two-Dimensional Electrons in High Landau Levels: An Isotropic-to-Nematic Liquid Crystal Phase Transition?

The recently discovered anisotropy of the longitudinal resistance of two-dimensional electrons near half filling of high Landau levels is found to persist to much higher temperatures T when a large in-plane magnetic field B|| is applied. Under these conditions we find that the longitudinal resistivity scales quasi-linearly with B||/T. These observations support the notion that the onset of anisotropy at B||=0 does not reflect the spontaneous development of charge density modulations but may instead signal an isotropic-to-nematic liquid crystal phase transition.

Density dependent spin polarisation in ultra low-disorder quantum wires

There is controversy as to whether a one-dimensional (1D) electron gas can spin polarise in the absence of a magnetic field. Together with a simple model, we present conductance measurements on ultra low-disorder quantum wires supportive of a spin polarisation at B=0. A spin energy gap is indicated by the presence of a feature in the range 0.5 - 0.7 X 2e^2/h in conductance data. Importantly, it appears that the spin gap is not static but a function of the electron density. Data obtained using a bias spectroscopy technique are consistent with the spin gap widening further as the Fermi-level is increased.

Observation of Quantized Hall Drag in a Strongly Correlated Bilayer Electron System

The frictional drag between parallel two-dimensional electron systems has been measured in a regime of strong interlayer correlations. When the bilayer system enters the excitonic quantized Hall state at total Landau level filling factor ν_T=1 the longitudinal component of the drag vanishes but a strong Hall component develops. The Hall drag resistance is observed to be accurately quantized at h/e^2.

Insulating and Fractional Quantum Hall States in the N=1 Landau Level

The observation of new insulating phases of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level is reported. These states, which are manifested as re-entrant integer quantized Hall effects, exist alongside well-developed even-denominator fractional quantized Hall states at nu=7/2 and 5/2 and new odd-denominator states at nu=3+1/5 and 3+4/5.

Current Path Properties of the Transport Anisotropy at Filling Factor 9/2

To establish the presence and orientation of the proposed striped phase in ultra-high mobility 2D electron systems at filling factor 9/2, current path transport properties are determined by varying the separation and allignment of current and voltage contacts. Contacts alligned orthogonal to the proposed intrinsic striped phase produce voltages consistent with current spreading along the stripes; current driven along the proposed stripe direction results in voltages consistent with channeling along the stripes. Direct comparison is made to current spreading/channeling properties of artificially induced 1D charge modulated systems, which indicates the 9/2 direction.

Experimental Demonstration of Fermi Surface Effects at Filling Factor 5/2

Using small wavelength surface acoustic waves (SAW) on ultra-high mobility heterostructures, Fermi surface properties are detected at 5/2 filling factor at temperatures higher than those at which the quantum Hall state forms. An enhanced conductivity is observed at 5/2 by employing sub 0.5 micron wavelength SAW, indicating a quasiparticle mean-free-path substantially smaller than that in the lowest Landau level. These findings are consistent with the presence of a filled Fermi sea of composite fermions, which may pair at lower temperatures to form the 5/2 ground state.

An All-Cryogenic THz Transmission Spectrometer

This paper describes a THz transmission spectrometer for the spectral range of 2-65 cm^-1 (100 GHz to 2 THz) with a spectral resolution of at least 1.8 cm^-1 (50 GHz) where the source, sample, and detector are all fully contained in a cryogenic environment. Cyclotron emission from a two-dimensional electron gas heated with an electrical current serves as a magnetic field tunable source. The spectrometer is demonstrated at 4.2 K by measuring the resonant cyclotron absorption of a second two dimensional electron gas. Unique aspects of the spectrometer are that 1) an ultra-broadband detector is used and 2) the emitter is run quasi-continuously with a chopping frequency of only 1 Hz. Since optical coupling to room temperature components is not necessary, this technique is compatible with ultra-low temperature (sub 100 mK) operation.

Effect of Nyquist Noise on the Nyquist Dephasing Rate in 2d Electron Systems

We measure the effect of externally applied broadband Nyquist noise on the intrinsic Nyquist dephasing rate of electrons in a two-dimensional electron gas at low temperatures. Within the measurement error, the phase coherence time is unaffected by the externally applied Nyquist noise, including applied noise temperatures of up to 300 K. The amplitude of the applied Nyquist noise from 100 MHz to 10 GHz is quantitatively determined in the same experiment using a microwave network analyzer.

An Investigation of Orientational Symmetry-Breaking Mechanisms in High Landau Levels

The principal axes of the recently discovered anisotropic phases of 2D electron systems at high Landau level occupancy are consistently oriented relative to the crystal axes of the host semiconductor. The nature of the native rotational symmetry breaking field responsible for this preferential orientation remains unknown. Here we report on experiments designed to investigate the origin and magnitude of this symmetry breaking field. Our results suggest that neither micron-scale surface roughness features nor the precise symmetry of the quantum well potential confining the 2D system are important factors. By combining tilted field transport measurements with detailed self-consistent calculations we estimate that the native anisotropy energy, whatever its origin, is typically ~ 1 mK per electron.

Observation of a Linearly Dispersing Collective Mode in a Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

Double layer two-dimensional electron systems can exhibit a fascinating collective phase believed to exhibit both quantum ferromagnetism and excitonic superfluidity. This unusual phase has recently been found to exhibit tunneling phenomena reminiscent of the Josephson effect. A key element of the theoretical understanding of this bizarre quantum fluid is the existence of linearly dispersing Goldstone collective modes. Using the method of tunneling spectroscopy, we have demonstrated the existence of these modes. We find the measured velocity to be in reasonable agreement with theoretical estimates.

Fermi liquid to Luttinger liquid transition at the edge of a two-dimensional electron gas

We present experimental results on the tunneling into the edge of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) obtained with a GaAs/AlGaAs cleaved edge overgrown structure in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. While the 2DEG exhibits typical fractional quantum Hall features of a very high mobility sample, we observe the onset of a non-linear current-voltage characteristic in the vicinity of nu=1. For filling factor nu<1 the system is consistent with a non-Fermi liquid behavior, such as a Luttinger liquid, whereas for nu>1 we observe an Ohmic tunneling resistance between the edge and a three dimensional contact, typical for a Fermi liquid. Hence, at the edge, there is a transition from a Luttinger liquid to a Fermi liquid. Finally, we show that the Luttinger liquid exponent at a given filling factor is not universal but depends on sample parameters.

Experimental Evidence for a Spin-Polarized Ground State in the ν=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We study the ν=5/2 even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) over a wide range of magnetic (B) field in a heterojunction insulated gate field-effect transistor (HIGFET). The electron density can be tuned from n=0 to 7.6 \times 10^{11} cm^{-2} with a peak mobility μ= 5.5 \times 10^6 cm^2/Vs. The ν=5/2 state shows a strong minimum in diagonal resistance and a developing Hall plateau at magnetic fields as high as 12.6T. The strength of the energy gap varies smoothly with B-field. We interpret these observations as strong evidence for a spin-polarized ground state at ν=5/2.
