Wigner crystalization about $ν$=3

We measure a resonance in the frequency dependence of the real diagonal conductivity, Re[$σ_{xx}$], near integer filling factor, $ν=3$. This resonance depends strongly on $ν$, with peak frequency $f_{pk} \approx 1.7$ GHz at $ν=3.04$ or 2.92 close to integer $ν$, but $f_{pk} \approx$ 600 MHz at $ν=3.19$ or 2.82, the extremes of where the resonance is visible. The dependence of $f_{pk}$ upon $n^*$, the density of electrons in the partially filled level, is discussed and compared with similar measurments by Chen {\it et al.}\cite{yong} about $ν=1$ and 2. We interpret the resonance as due to a pinned Wigner crystal phase with density $n^*$ about the $ν=3$ state.

Observation of narrow-band noise accompanying the breakdown of insulating states in high Landau levels

Recent magnetotransport experiments on high mobility two-dimensional electron systems have revealed many-body electron states unique to high Landau levels. Among these are re-entrant integer quantum Hall states which undergo sharp transitions to conduction above some threshold field. Here we report that these transitions are often accompanied by narrow- and broad-band noise with frequencies which are strongly dependent on the magnitude of the applied dc current.

Experiments on the Fermi to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid transition in quasi-1D systems

We present experimental results on the tunneling into the edge of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) obtained with GaAs/AlGaAs cleaved edge overgrown structures. The electronic properties of the edge of these systems can be described by a one-dimensional chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid when the filling factor of the 2DEG is very small. Here we focus on the region where the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid breaks down to form a standard Fermi liquid close to $ν=1$ and show that we recover a universal curve, which describes all existing data.

Light scattering observations of spin reversal excitations in the fractional quantum Hall regime

Resonant inelastic light scattering experiments access the low lying excitations of electron liquids in the fractional quantum Hall regime in the range $2/5 \geq ν\geq 1/3$. Modes associated with changes in the charge and spin degrees of freedom are measured. Spectra of spin reversed excitations at filling factor $ν\gtrsim 1/3$ and at $ν\lesssim 2/5$ identify a structure of lowest spin-split Landau levels of composite fermions that is similar to that of electrons. Observations of spin wave excitations enable determinations of energies required to reverse spin. The spin reversal energies obtained from the spectra illustrate the significant residual interactions of composite fermions. At $ν= 1/3$ energies of spin reversal modes are larger but relatively close to spin conserving excitations that are linked to activated transport. Predictions of composite fermion theory are in good quantitative agreement with experimental results.

Crossover and Coexistence of Quasiparticle Excitations in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime at $ν\leq 1/3$

New low-lying excitations are observed by inelastic light scattering at filling factors $ν=p/(ϕp \pm 1)$ of the fractional quantum Hall regime with $ϕ=4$. Coexisting with these modes throughout the range $ν\leq 1/3$ are $ϕ=2$ excitations seen at 1/3. Both $ϕ=2$ and $ϕ=4$ excitations have distinct behaviors with temperature and filling factor. The abrupt first appearance of the new modes in the low energy excitation spectrum at $ν\lesssim 1/3$ suggests a marked change in the quantum ground state on crossing the $ϕ=2 \to ϕ=4$ boundary at $ν= 1/3$.

Observation of Apparently Zero-Conductance States in Corbino Samples

Using Corbino samples we have observed oscillatory conductance in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system subjected to crossed microwave and magnetic fields. On the strongest of the oscillation minima the conductance is found to be vanishingly small, possibly indicating an insulating state associated with these minima.

Transition from an electron solid to the sequence of fractional quantum Hall states at very low Landau level filling factor

At low Landau level filling of a two-dimensional electron system, typically associated with the formation of an electron crystal, we observe local minima in Rxx at filling factors nu=2/11, 3/17, 3/19, 2/13, 1/7, 2/15, 2/17, and 1/9. Each of these developing fractional quantum Hall (FQHE) states appears only above a filling factor-specific temperature. This can be interpreted as the melting of an electron crystal and subsequent FQHE liquid formation. The observed sequence of FQHE states follow the series of composite fermion states emanating from nu=1/6 and nu=1/8.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect of Composite Fermions

In a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well of electron density 1x10^{11} cm^{-2} we observe a fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at filling factors nu=4/11, and 5/13, and weaker states at nu=6/17, 4/13, 5/17 and 7/11. These sequences of fractions do not fit into the standard series of integral quantum Hall effects (IQHE) of composite fermions (CF) at nu=p/(2mp +/- 1). They rather can be regarded as the FQHE of CFs attesting to residual interactions between these composite particles. In tilted magnetic fields the nu=4/11 state remains unchanged, strongly suggesting it to be spin-polarized. The weak nu=7/11 state vanishes quickly with tilt.

AFM local oxidation nanopatterning of a high mobility shallow 2D hole gas

Recently developed AFM local anodic oxidation (LAO) technique offers a convenient way of patterning nanodevices, but imposes even more stringent requirements on the underlying quantum well structure. We developed a new very shallow quantum well design which allows the depth and density of the 2D gas to be independently controlled during the growth. A high mobility (0.5 10^6 cm^2/Vs at 4.2 K) 2D hole gas just 350A below the surface is demonstrated. A quantum point contact, fabricated by AFM LAO nanopatterning from this wafer, shows 9 quantum steps at 50 mK.

Vertical Confinement and Evolution of Reentrant Insulating Transition in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

We have observed an anomalous shift of the high field reentrant insulating phases in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) tightly confined within a narrow GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well. Instead of the well-known transitions into the high field insulating states centered around $ν= 1/5$, the 2DES confined within an 80Å-wide quantum well exhibits the transition at $ν= 1/3$. Comparably large quantum lifetime of the 2DES in narrow well discounts the effect of disorder and points to confinement as the primary driving force behind the evolution of the reentrant transition.

Microwave Resonance of 2D Wigner Crystal around integer Landau fillings

We have observed a resonance in the real part of the finite frequency diagonal conductivity using microwave absorption measurements in high quality 2D electron systems near {\em integer fillings}. The resonance exists in some neighborhood of filling factor around corresponding integers and is qualitatively similar to previously observed resonance of weakly pinned Wigner crystal in high $B$ and very small filling factor regime. Data measured around both $ν=1$ and $ν=2$ are presented. We interpret the resonance as the signature of Wigner crystal state around integer Landau levels.

Linear temperature dependence of conductivity in the "insulating" regime of dilute two-dimensional holes in GaAs

The conductivity of extremely high mobility dilute two-dimensional holes in GaAs changes linearly with temperature in the insulating side of the metal-insulator transition. Hopping conduction, characterized by an exponentially decreasing conductivity with decreasing temperature, is not observed when the conductivity is smaller than $e^{2}/h$. We suggest that strong interactions in a regime close to the Wigner crystallization must be playing a role in the unusual transport.

Spin Susceptibility of an Ultra-Low Density Two Dimensional Electron System

We determine the spin susceptibility in a two dimensional electron system in GaAs/AlGaAs over a wide range of low densities from 2$\times10^{9}$cm$^{-2}$ to 4$\times10^{10}$cm$^{-2}$. Our data can be fitted to an equation that describes the density dependence as well as the polarization dependence of the spin susceptibility. It can account for the anomalous g-factors reported recently in GaAs electron and hole systems. The paramagnetic spin susceptibility increases with decreasing density as expected from theoretical calculations.

Interaction Corrections to Two-Dimensional Hole Transport in Large $r_{s}$ Limit

The metallic conductivity of dilute two-dimensional holes in a GaAs HIGFET (Heterojunction Insulated-Gate Field-Effect Transistor) with extremely high mobility and large $r_{s}$ is found to have a linear dependence on temperature, consistent with the theory of interaction corrections in the ballistic regime. Phonon scattering contributions are negligible in the temperature range of our interest, allowing comparison between our measured data and theory without any phonon subtraction. The magnitude of the Fermi liquid interaction parameter $F_{0}^σ$ determined from the experiment, however, decreases with increasing $r_{s}$ for $r_{s}\agt22$, a behavior unexpected from existing theoretical calculations valid for small $r_{s}$.

Double layer two-dimensional electron systems: Probing the transition from weak to strong coupling with Coulomb drag

Frictional drag measurements revealing anomalously large dissipation at the transition between the weakly- and strongly-coupled regimes of a bilayer two-dimensional electron system at total Landau level filling factor $ν_T =1$ are reported. This result suggests the existence of fluctuations, either static or dynamic, near the phase boundary separating the quantized Hall state at small layer separations from the compressible state at larger separations. Interestingly, the anomalies in drag seem to persist to larger layer separations than does interlayer phase coherence as detected in tunneling.

Evidence of Landau levels and interactions in low-lying excitations of composite fermions at 1/3 <= ν<= 2/5

Excitation modes in the range $2/5 \geq ν\geq 1/3$ of the fractional quantum Hall regime are observed by resonant inelastic light scattering. Spectra of spin reversed excitations suggest a structure of lowest spin-split Landau levels of composite fermions that is similar to that of electrons. Spin-flip energies determined from spectra reveal significant composite fermion interactions. The filling factor dependence of mode energies display an abrupt change in the middle of the range when there is partial population of a composite fermion level.

Resistivity of dilute 2D electrons in an undoped GaAs heterostructure

We report resistivity measurements from 0.03 K to 10 K in a dilute high mobility 2D electron system. Using an undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in a gated field-effect transistor geometry, a wide range of densities, $0.16 \times 10^{10} {cm}^{-2}$ to $7.5 \times 10^{10} {cm}^{-2}$, are explored. For high densities, the results are quantitatively shown to be due to scattering by acoustic phonons and impurities. In an intermediate range of densities, a peak in the resistivity is observed for temperatures below 1 K. This non-monotonic resistivity can be understood by considering the known scattering mechanisms of phonons, bulk and interface ionized impurities. Still lower densities appear insulating to the lowest temperature measured.

Evidence for a New Dissipationless Regime in 2D Electronic Transport

In an ultra-clean 2D electron system (2DES) subjected to crossed millimeterwave (30--150 GHz) and weak (B < 2 kG) magnetic fields, a series of apparently dissipationless states emerges as the system is detuned from cyclotron resonances. Such states are characterized by an exponentially vanishing low-temperature longitudinal resistance and a classical Hall resistance. The activation energies associated with such states exceeds the Landau level spacing by an order of magnitude. Our findings are likely indicative of a collective ground state previously unknown for 2DES.
