Coexistence of antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism in adjacent honeycomb layers

Antiferromagnetic and ferro/ferrimagnetic orders are typically exclusive in nature, thus, their co-existence in atomic-scale proximity is expected only in heterostructures. Breaking this paradigm and broadening the range of unconventional magnetic states, we report here on an atomic-scale hybrid spin state, which is stabilized in three-dimensional crystals of the polar antiferromagnet Co$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ by magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the \emph{Co} honeycomb layers and possesses a spontaneous in-plane ferromagnetic moment. Our microscopic spin model, capturing the observed field dependence of the longitudinal and transverse magnetization as well as the magnetoelectric/elastic properties, reveals that this novel spin state is composed of an alternating stacking of antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic honeycomb layers. The strong intra-layer and the weak inter-layer exchange couplings together with competing anisotropies at octahedral and tetrahedral \emph{Co} sites are identified as the key ingredients to stabilize antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic layers in such a close proximity. We show that the proper balance of magnetic interactions can extend the stability range of this hybrid phase down to zero magnetic field. The possibility to realize a layer-by-layer stacking of such distinct spin orders via suitable combinations of microscopic interactions opens a new dimension towards the nanoscale engineering of magnetic states.

Confirming the trilinear form of the optical magnetoelectric effect in the polar honeycomb antiferromagnet Co$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_8$

Magnetoelectric phenomena are intimately linked to relativistic effects and also require the material to break spatial inversion symmetry and time reversal invariance. Magnetoelectric coupling can substantially affect light-matter interaction and lead to non-reciprocal light propagation. Here, we confirm on a fully experimental basis, without invoking either symmetry-based or material-specific assumptions, that the optical magnetoelectric effect in materials with non-parallel magnetization ($\boldsymbol{M}$) and electric polarization ($\boldsymbol{P}$) generates a trilinear term in the refractive index, $δn\propto\boldsymbol{k}\cdot(\boldsymbol{P}\times\boldsymbol{M})$, where $\boldsymbol{k}$ is the propagation vector of light. Its sharp magnetoelectric resonances, that are simultaneously electric and magnetic dipole active excitations, make Co$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ an ideal compound to demonstrate this fundamental relation via independent variation of $\boldsymbol{M}$, $\boldsymbol{P}$ and $\boldsymbol{k}$. Remarkably, the material shows almost perfect one-way transparency in moderate magnetic fields at some of the magnetoelectric resonances.

Ageing studies of Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes in high irradiation dose

Detailed tests and analysis of ageing effects of high irradiation dose on Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes were performed. MSMGRPC efficiency and cluster size before irradiation are measured and compared with their values after irradiation in a high irradiation dose accessed at a multi-purpose irradiation facility of IFIN-HH based on $^{60}$Co source. The composition and properties of the deposited layers on the glass electrodes, studied based on a multitude of analysis methods, i.e. SEM, XPS, foil-ERDA, RBS, AFM and THz-TDS, are presented.

Cooperative cluster-Jahn-Teller effect as a possible route to antiferroelectricity

We report the observation of an antipolar phase in cubic GaNb$_4$S$_8$ driven by an unconventional microscopic mechanism, the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect of Nb$_4$S$_4$ molecular clusters. The assignment of the antipolar nature is based on sudden changes in the crystal structure and a strong drop of the dielectric constant at $T_\mathrm{JT}=31$\,K, also indicating the first-order nature of the transition. In addition, we found that local symmetry lowering precedes long-range orbital ordering, implying the presence of a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the cubic phase above $T_\mathrm{JT}$. Based on the variety of structural polymorphs reported in lacunar spinels, also including ferroelectric phases, we argue that GaNb$_4$S$_8$ may be transformable to a ferroelectric state, which would further classify the observed antipolar phase as antiferrolectric.

Element-specific field-induced spin reorientation and an unusual tetracritical point in MnCr2S4

The ferrimagnetic spinel MnCr2S4 shows a variety of magnetic-field-induced phase transitions owing to bond frustration and strong spin-lattice coupling. However, the site-resolved magnetic properties at the respective field-induced phases in high magnetic fields remain elusive. Our soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies up to 40 T directly evidence element-selective magnetic-moment reorientations in the field-induced phases. The complex magnetic structures are further supported by entropy changes extracted from magnetocaloric-effect measurements. Moreover, thermodynamic experiments reveal an unusual tetracritical point in the H-T phase diagram of MnCr2S4 due to strong spin-lattice coupling.

Magnetic and vibronic THz excitations in Zn doped Fe$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_8$

We report on optical excitations in the magnetically ordered phases of multiferroic Fe$_{1.86}$Zn$_{0.14}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ in the frequency range from 10-130 cm$^{-1}$ (0.3-3.9 THz). In the collinear easy-axis antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N=50$~K eleven optically active modes have been observed in finite magnetic fields, assuming that the lowest-lying mode is doubly degenerate. The large number of modes reflects either a more complex magnetic structure than in pure Fe$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ or that spin stretching modes become active in addition to the usual spin precessional modes. Their magnetic field dependence, for fields applied along the easy axis, reflects the irreversible magnetic-field driven phase transition from the antiferromagnetic ground state to a ferrimagnetic state, while the number of modes remains unchanged in the covered frequency region. We determined selection rules for some of the AFM modes by investigating all polarization configurations and identified magnetic- and electric-dipole active modes as well. In addition to these sharp resonances, a broad electric-dipole active excitation band, which is not influenced by the external magnetic field, occurs below $T_N$ with an onset at 12 cm$^{-1}$. We are able to model this absorption band as a vibronic excitation related to the lowest-lying Fe$^{2+}$ electronic states in tetrahedral environment.

Structure, phonons, and orbital degrees of freedom in Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$

We report on the structural and spectroscopic characterization of the multiferroic Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Synchrotron x-ray and neutron diffraction, as well as thermal expansion measurements reveal a lattice anomaly at $T_{\mathrm{N}}\simeq 60\,$K but do not show any symmetry lowering in the magnetically ordered state. The lattice parameter $c$ exhibits a non-monotonic behavior with a pronounced minimum around $200\,$K, which is also reflected in an anomalous behavior of some of the observed infrared-active optical excitations and parallels the onset of short-range magnetic order. The infrared reflectivity spectra measured between 5 and 300$\,$K in the frequency range of $100-8000\,$cm$^{-1}$ reveal most of the expected phonon modes in comparison with the eigenfrequencies obtained by density-functional calculations. The $A_1$ phonons show an overall hardening upon cooling, whereas a non-monotonic behavior is observed for some of the $E_1$ modes. These modes also show a strongly increased phonon lifetime below $T_\mathrm{N}$, which we associate with the quenched direction of the orbital moment in the magnetically ordered state. A similar increase is observed in the lifetime of the higher-lying $d$-$d$ excitations of the tetrahedral Fe$^{2+}$ site, which become clearly visible below $T_\mathrm{N}$ only.

Magnetic anisotropy and exchange paths for octa- and tetrahedrally coordinated Mn$^{2+}$ ions in the honeycomb multiferroic Mn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$

We investigated the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the polar ferrimagnet Mn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ in three magnetically ordered phases via magnetization, magnetic torque, and THz absorption spectroscopy measurements. The observed magnetic field dependence of the spin-wave resonances, including Brillouin zone-center and zone-boundary excitations, magnetization, and torque, are well described by an extended two-sublattice antiferromagnetic classical mean-field model. In this orbitally quenched system, the competing weak easy-plane and easy-axis single-ion anisotropies of the two crystallographic sites are determined from the model and assigned to the tetra- and octahedral sites, respectively, by ab initio calculations.

Lattice dynamics and electronic excitations in a large family of lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice structure

Reproducing the electronic structure of AM$_4$X$_8$ lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice is a great theoretical challenge due to the interplay of various factors. The character of the M$_4$X$_4$ cluster orbitals is critically influenced by the Jahn-Teller instability, the spin-orbit interaction, and also by the magnetic state of the clusters. Consequently, to reproduce the narrow-gap semiconducting nature of these moderately correlated materials requires advanced approaches, since the strength of the inter-cluster hopping is strongly affected by the character of the cluster orbitals. In order to provide a solid experimental basis for theoretical studies, we performed broadband optical spectroscopy on a large set of lacunar spinels, with systematically changing ions at the A and M sites as well as the ligand (A=Ga, Ge, Al; M=V, Mo, Nb, Ta; X=S, Se). Our study covers the range of phonon excitations and also electronic transitions near the gap edge. In the phonon excitation spectrum a limited subset of the symmetry allowed modes is observed in the cubic state, with a few additional modes emerging upon the symmetry-lowering structural transition. All the infrared active modes are assigned to vibrations of the ligands and ions at the A sites, with no obvious contribution from the M-site ions. Concerning the electronic states, we found that all compounds are narrow-gap semiconductors ($E_\mathrm{g} = 130 - 350\,$meV) already in their room-temperature cubic state and their structural transitions induce weak, if any, changes in the band gap. The gap value is decreased when substituting S with Se and also when replacing $3d$ ions by $4d$ or $5d$ ions at the M sites.

Spin-lattice coupling in a ferrimagnetic spinel: The exotic $H$-$T$ phase diagram of MnCr$_2$S$_4$ up to 110 T

In antiferromagnets, the interplay of spin frustration and spin-lattice coupling has been extensively studied as the source of complex spin patterns and exotic magnetism. Here, we demonstrate that, although neglected in the past, the spin-lattice coupling is essential to ferrimagnetic spinels as well. We performed ultrahigh-field magnetization measurements up to 110 T on a Yafet-Kittel ferrimagnetic spinel, MnCr$_2$S$_4$, which was complemented by measurements of magnetostriction and sound velocities up to 60 T. Classical Monte Carlo calculations were performed to identify the complex high-field spin structures. Our minimal model incorporating spin-lattice coupling accounts for the experimental results and corroborates the complete phase diagram, including two new high-field phase transitions at 75 and 85 T. Magnetoelastic coupling induces striking effects: An extremely robust magnetization plateau is embedded between two unconventional spin-asymmetric phases. Ferrimagnetic spinels provide a new platform to study asymmetric and multiferroic phases stabilized by spin-lattice coupling.

Structure, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the spin-orbital-liquid candidate FeSc2S4 : Influence of fe off-stoichiometry

We report structural, susceptibility and specific heat studies of stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric poly- and single crystals of the A-site spinel compound FeSc2S4. In stoichiometric samples no long-range magnetic order is found down to 1.8 K. The magnetic susceptibility of these samples is field independent in the temperature range 10 - 400 K and does not show irreversible effects at low temperatures. In contrast, the magnetic susceptibility of samples with iron excess shows substantial field dependence at high temperatures and manifests a pronounced magnetic irreversibility at low temperatures with a difference between ZFC and FC susceptibilities and a maximum at 10 K reminiscent of a magnetic transition. Single crystal x-ray diffraction of the stoichiometric samples revealed a single phase spinel structure without site inversion. In single crystalline samples with Fe excess besides the main spinel phase a second ordered single-crystal phase was detected with the diffraction pattern of a vacancy-ordered superstructure of iron sulfide, close to the 5C polytype Fe9S10. Specific heat studies reveal a broad anomaly, which evolves below 20 K in both stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric crystals. We show that the low-temperature specific heat can be well described by considering the low-lying spin-orbital electronic levels of Fe2+ ions. Our results demonstrate significant influence of excess Fe ions on intrinsic magnetic behavior of FeSc2S4 and provide support for the spin-orbital liquid scenario proposed in earlier studies for the stoichiometric compound.
