Self-bound many-body states of quasi-one-dimensional dipolar Fermi gases: Exploiting Bose-Fermi mappings for generalized contact interactions

Using a combination of results from exact mappings and from mean-field theory we explore the phase diagram of quasi-one-dimensional systems of identical fermions with attractive dipolar interactions. We demonstrate that at low density these systems provide a realization of a single-component one-dimensional Fermi gas with a generalized contact interaction. Using an exact duality between one-dimensional Fermi and Bose gases, we show that when the dipole moment is strong enough, bound many-body states exist, and we calculate the critical coupling strength for the emergence of these states. At higher densities, the Hartree-Fock approximation is accurate, and by combining the two approaches we determine the structure of the phase diagram. The many-body bound states should be accessible in future experiments with ultracold polar molecules.

Time-of-Flight Roton Spectroscopy in Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates may present a rotonlike dispersion minimum, which has yet to be observed in experiments. We discuss a simple method to reveal roton excitations, based on the response of quasi-two-dimensional dipolar condensates against a weak lattice potential. By employing numerical simulations for realistic scenarios, we analyze the response of the system as a function of both the lattice spacing and the s-wave scattering length, showing that the roton minimum may be readily revealed in current experiments by the resonant population of Bragg peaks in time-of-flight measurements.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We present an analytical model for the theoretical analysis of spin dynamics and spontaneous symmetry breaking in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). This allows for an excellent intuitive understanding of the processes and provides good quantitative agreement with experimental results in Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 135302 (2010). It is shown that the dynamics of a spinor BEC initially prepared in an unstable Zeeman state mF=0 (|0>) can be understood by approximating the effective trapping potential for the state |+-1> with a cylindrical box potential. The resonances in the creation efficiency of these atom pairs can be traced back to excitation modes of this confinement. The understanding of these excitation modes allows for a detailed characterization of the symmetry breaking mechanism, showing how a twofold spontaneous breaking of spatial and spin symmetry can occur. In addition a detailed account of the experimental methods for the preparation and analysis of spinor quantum gases is given.

Ferromagnetic spin-orbital liquid of dipolar fermions in zigzag lattices

Two-component dipolar fermions in zigzag optical lattices allow for the engineering of spin-orbital models. We show that dipolar lattice fermions permit the exploration of a regime typically unavailable in solid-state compounds that is characterized by a novel spin-liquid phase with a finite magnetization and spontaneously broken SU(2) symmetry. This peculiar spin liquid may be understood as a Luttinger liquid of composite particles consisting of bound states of spin waves and orbital domain walls moving in an unsaturated ferromagnetic background. In addition, we show that the system exhibits a boundary phase transitions involving non-local entanglement of edge spins.

Roton confinement in trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Roton excitations constitute a key feature of dipolar gases, connecting these gases with superfluid helium. We show that the density dependence of the roton minimum results in a spatial roton confinement, particularly relevant in pancake dipolar condensates with large aspect ratios. We show that roton confinement plays a crucial role in the dynamics after roton instability, and that arresting the instability may create a trapped roton gas revealed by confined density modulations. We discuss the local susceptibility against density perturbations, which we illustrate for the case of vortices. Roton confinement is expected to play a key role in experiments.

Spin-orbit coupled fermions in ladder-like optical lattices at half-filling

We study the ground-state phase diagram of two-component fermions loaded in a ladder-like lattice at half filling in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. For repulsive fermions with unidirectional spin-orbit coupling along the legs we identify a Néel state which is separated from rung-singlet and ferromagnetic states by Ising phase transition lines. These lines cross for maximal spin-orbit coupling and a direct Gaussian phase transition between rung-singlet and ferro phases is realized. For the case of Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling, besides the rung singlet phases two distinct striped ferromagnetic phases are formed. In case of attractive fermions with spin-orbit coupling at half-filling for decoupled chains we identify a dimerized state that separates a singlet superconductor and a ferromagnetic states.

Bosonization and entanglement spectrum for one-dimensional polar bosons on disordered lattices

The extended Bose-Hubbard model subjected to a disordered potential is predicted to display a rich phase diagram. In the case of uniform random disorder one finds two insulating quantum phases -- the Mott-insulator and the Haldane insulator -- in addition to a superfluid and a Bose glass phase. In the case of a quasiperiodic potential further phases are found, eg the incommensurate density wave, adiabatically connected to the Haldane insulator. For the case of weak random disorder we determine the phase boundaries using a perturbative bosonization approach. We then calculate the entanglement spectrum for both types of disorder, showing that it provides a good indication of the various phases.

Confinement-induced collapse of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We report on the observation of the confinement-induced collapse dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (dBEC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We show that for a fixed interaction strength the collapse can be initiated in-trap by lowering the lattice depth below a critical value. Moreover, a stable dBEC in the lattice may become unstable during the time-of-flight dynamics upon release, due to the combined effect of the anisotropy of the dipolar interactions and inter-site coherence in the lattice.

Adiabatic spin cooling using high-spin Fermi gases

Spatial entropy redistribution plays a key role in adiabatic cooling of ultra-cold lattice gases. We show that high-spin fermions with a spatially variable quadratic Zeeman coupling may allow for the creation of an inner spin-1/2 core surrounded by high-spin wings. The latter are always more entropic than the core at high temperatures and, remarkably, at all temperatures in the presence of frustration. Combining thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz with local density approximation, we study the spatial entropy distribution for the particular case of one-dimensional spin-3/2 lattice fermions in the Mott phase. Interestingly, this spatially dependent entropy opens a possible path for an adiabatic cooling technique that, in contrast to previous proposals, would specifically target the spin degree of freedom. We discuss a possible realization of this adiabatic cooling, which may allow for a highly efficient entropy decrease in the spin-1/2 core and help access antiferromagnetic order in experiments on ultracold spinor fermions.

Exploring spin-orbital models with dipolar fermions in zig-zag optical lattices

Ultra-cold dipolar spinor fermions in zig-zag type optical lattices can mimic spin-orbital models relevant in solid-state systems, as transition-metal oxides with partially filled d-levels, with the interesting advantage of reviving the quantum nature of orbital fluctuations. We discuss two different physical systems in which these models may be simulated, showing that the interplay between lattice geometry and spin-orbital quantum dynamics produces a wealth of novel quantum phases.

Spin noise spectroscopy under resonant optical probing conditions: coherent and non-linear effects

High sensitivity Faraday rotation spectroscopy is used to measure the fluctuating magnetization noise of non-interacting rubidium atoms under resonant and non-resonant optical probing conditions. The spin noise frequency spectra in dependence on the probe light detuning with respect to the D2-transition reveals clear signatures of a coherent coupling of the participating electronic levels. The results are explained by extended Bloch equations including homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening mechanisms. Our measurements further indicate that spin noise originating from excited states are governed at high intensities by collective effects.

Quantizing Majorana Fermions in a Superconductor

A Dirac-type matrix equation governs surface excitations in a topological insulator in contact with an s-wave superconductor. The order parameter can be homogenous or vortex valued. In the homogenous case a winding number can be defined whose non-vanishing value signals topological effects. A vortex leads to a static, isolated, zero energy solution. Its mode function is real, and has been called "Majorana." Here we demonstrate that the reality/Majorana feature is not confined to the zero energy mode, but characterizes the full quantum field. In a four-component description a change of basis for the relevant matrices renders the Hamiltonian imaginary and the full, space-time dependent field is real, as is the case for the relativistic Majorana equation in the Majorana matrix representation. More broadly, we show that the Majorana quantization procedure is generic to superconductors, with or without the Dirac structure, and follows from the constraints of fermionic statistics on the symmetries of Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians. The Hamiltonian can always be brought to an imaginary form, leading to equations of motion that are real with quantized real field solutions. Also we examine the Fock space realization of the zero mode algebra for the Dirac-type systems. We show that a two-dimensional representation is natural, in which fermion parity is preserved.

Non-local state-swapping of polar molecules in bilayers

The observation of significant dipolar effects in gases of ultra-cold polar molecules typically demands a strong external electric field to polarize the molecules. We show that even in the absence of a significant polarization, dipolar effects may play a crucial role in the physics of polar molecules in bilayers, provided that the molecules in each layer are initially prepared in a different rotational state. Then, inter-layer dipolar interactions result in a non-local swap of the rotational state between molecules in different layers, even for weak applied electric fields. The inter-layer scattering due to the dipole-dipole interaction leads to a non-trivial dependence of the swapping rate on density, temperature, inter-layer spacing, and population imbalance. For reactive molecules like KRb, chemical recombination immediately follows a non-local swap and dominates the losses even for temperatures well above quantum degeneracy, and could be hence observed under current experimental conditions.

Interaction of Phonons and Dirac Fermions on the Surface of Bi2Se3: A Strong Kohn Anomaly

We report the first measurements of phonon dispersion curves on the (001) surface of the strong three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3. The surface phonon measurements were carried out with the aid of coherent helium beam surface scattering techniques. The results reveal a prominent signature of the exotic metallic Dirac fermion quasi-particles, including a strong Kohn anomaly. The signature is manifest in a low energy isotropic convex dispersive surface phonon branch with a frequency maximum of 1.8 THz, and having a V-shaped minimum at approximately 2kF that defines the Kohn anomaly. Theoretical analysis attributes this dispersive profile to the renormalization of the surface phonon excitations by the surface Dirac fermions. The contribution of the Dirac fermions to this renormalization is derived in terms of a Coulomb-type perturbation model.

Conformal quantum mechanics as the CFT$_1$ dual to AdS$_2$

A 0+1-dimensional candidate theory for the CFT$_1$ dual to AdS$_2$ is discussed. The quantum mechanical system does not have a ground state that is invariant under the three generators of the conformal group. Nevertheless, we show that there are operators in the theory that are not primary, but whose "non-primary character" conspires with the "non-invariance of the vacuum" to give precisely the correlation functions in a conformally invariant theory.

Dipolar Stabilization of an Attractive Bose Gas in a One Dimensional Lattice

We experimentally show that dipolar interaction can stabilize otherwise unstable many-body systems like an attractive Bose gas. In a one dimensional lattice the repulsive dipolar on-site interaction balances negative scattering lengths up to -17 Bohr radii and stabilizes the chromium Bose-Einstein condensate. For reduced lattice depths, the dipolar stabilization turns into destabilization. We probe the full cross-over between the two regimes and our results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations, which reveal significant dipolar inter-site interactions.

Interlayer superfluidity in bilayer systems of fermionic polar molecules

We consider fermionic polar molecules in a bilayer geometry where they are oriented perpendicularly to the layers, which permits both low inelastic losses and superfluid pairing. The dipole-dipole interaction between molecules of different layers leads to the emergence of interlayer superfluids. The superfluid regimes range from BCS-like fermionic superfluidity with a high $T_c$ to Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensation of interlayer dimers, thus exhibiting a peculiar BCS-BEC crossover. We show that one can cover the entire crossover regime under current experimental conditions.

Repulsively-bound exciton-biexciton states in high-spin fermions in optical lattices

We show that the interplay between spin-changing collisions and quadratic Zeeman coupling provides a novel mechanism for the formation of repulsively bound composites in high-spin fermions, which we illustrate by considering spin flips in an initially polarized hard-core 1D Mott insulator of spin-3/2 fermions. We show that after the flips the dynamics is characterized by the creation of two types of exciton-biexciton composites. We analyze the conditions for the existence of these bound states, and discuss their intriguing properties. In particular we show that the effective mass and stability of the composites depends non-trivially on spin-changing collisions, on the quadratic Zeeman effect and on the initial exciton localization. Finally, we show that the composites may remain stable against inelastic collisions, opening the possibility of novel quantum composite phases.
