Field-induced phase transitions of repulsive spin-1 bosons in optical lattices

We study the phase diagram of repulsively interacting spin-1 bosons in optical lattices at unit filling, showing that an externally induced quadratic Zeeman effect may lead to a rich physics characterized by various phases and phase transitions. We find that the main properties of the system may be described by an effective field model, which provides the precise location of the phase boundaries for any dimension, being in excellent agreement with our numerical calculations for one-dimensional systems. Our work provides a quantitative guide for the experimental analysis of various types of field-induced quantum phase transitions in spin-1 lattice bosons. These transitions, which are precluded in spin-1/2 systems, may be realized using an externally modified quadratic Zeeman coupling, similar to recent experiments with spinor condensates in the continuum.

Spontaneous breaking of spatial and spin symmetry in spinor condensates

Parametric amplification of quantum fluctuations constitutes a fundamental mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking. In our experiments, a spinor condensate acts as a parametric amplifier of spin modes, resulting in a twofold spontaneous breaking of spatial and spin symmetry in the amplified clouds. Our experiments permit a precise analysis of the amplification in specific spatial Bessel-like modes, allowing for the detailed understanding of the double symmetry breaking. On resonances that create vortex-antivortex superpositions, we show that the cylindrical spatial symmetry is spontaneously broken, but phase squeezing prevents spin-symmetry breaking. If, however, nondegenerate spin modes contribute to the amplification, quantum interferences lead to spin-dependent density profiles and hence spontaneously-formed patterns in the longitudinal magnetization.

Parametric amplification of matter waves in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Spin-changing collisions may lead under proper conditions to the parametric amplification of matter waves in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. Magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, although typically very weak in alkaline atoms, are shown to play a very relevant role in the amplification process. We show that these interactions may lead to a strong dependence of the amplification dynamics on the angle between the trap axis and the magnetic-field orientation. We analyze as well the important role played by magnetic-field gradients, which modify also strongly the amplification process. Magnetic-field gradients must be hence carefully controlled in future experiments, in order to observe clearly the effects of the dipolar interactions in the amplification dynamics.

Multi-resonant spinor dynamics in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We analyze the spinor dynamics of a Rb-87 F=2 condensate initially prepared in the m_F=0 Zeeman sublevel. We show that this dynamics, characterized by the creation of correlated atomic pairs in m_F=+/-1, presents an intriguing multi-resonant magnetic field dependence induced by the trap inhomogeneity. This dependence is directly linked to the most unstable Bogoliubov spin excitations of the initial m_F = 0 condensate, showing that, in general, even a qualitative understanding of the pair creation efficiency in a spinor condensate requires a careful consideration of the confinement.

Chiral confinement in quasirelativistic Bose-Einstein condensates

In the presence of a laser-induced spin-orbit coupling an interacting ultra cold spinor Bose-Einstein condensate may acquire a quasi-relativistic character described by a non-linear Dirac-like equation. We show that as a result of the spin-orbit coupling and the non-linearity the condensate may become self-trapped, resembling the so-called chiral confinement, previously studied in the context of the massive Thirring model. We first consider 1D geometries where the self-confined condensates present an intriguing sinusoidal dependence on the inter-particle interactions. We further show that multi-dimensional chiral-confinement is also possible under appropriate feasible laser arrangements, and discuss the properties of 2D and 3D condensates, which differ significantly from the 1D case.

Bose-Fermi mixtures of self-assembled filaments of fermionic polar molecules

Fermionic polar molecules in deep 1D optical lattices may form self-assembled filaments when the electric dipoles are oriented along the lattice axis. These composites are bosons or fermions depending on the number of molecules per chain, leading to a peculiar and complex Bose-Fermi mixture, which we discuss in detail for the simplest case of a three-well potential. We show that the interplay between filament binding energy, transverse filament modes, and trimer Fermi energy leads to a rich variety of possible scenarios ranging from a degenerate Fermi gas of trimers to a binary mixture of two different types of bosonic dimers. We study the intriguing zero temperature and finite temperature physics of these composites for the particular case of an ideal filament gas loaded in 1D sites, and discuss possible methods to probe these chain mixtures.

Parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations in a spinor condensate

Parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations is crucial in modern quantum optics, enabling the creation of squeezing and entanglement. We demonstrate the parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations for matter waves using a spinor F=2 Rb-87 condensate. Interatomic interactions lead to correlated pair creation in the m_F= +/- 1 states from an initial unstable m_F=0 condensate, which acts as a vacuum for m_F unequal 0. Although this pair creation from a pure m_F=0 condensate is ideally triggered by vacuum fluctuations, unavoidable spurious initial m_F= +/- 1 atoms induce a classical seed which may become the dominant triggering mechanism. We show that pair creation is insensitive to a classical seed for sufficiently large magnetic fields, demonstrating the dominant role of vacuum fluctuations. The presented system thus provides a direct path towards the generation of non-classical states of matter on the basis of spinor condensates.

Faraday patterns in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Faraday patterns can be induced in Bose-Einstein condensates by a periodic modulation of the system nonlinearity. We show that these patterns are remarkably different in dipolar gases with a roton-maxon excitation spectrum. Whereas for non-dipolar gases the pattern size decreases monotonously with the driving frequency, patterns in dipolar gases present, even for shallow roton minima, a highly non trivial frequency dependence characterized by abrupt pattern size transitions, which are especially pronounced when the dipolar interaction is modulated. Faraday patterns constitute hence an optimal tool for revealing the onset of the roton minimum, a major key feature of dipolar gases.

Phase transition from straight into twisted vortex-lines in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

The non-local non-linearity introduced by the dipole-dipole interaction plays a crucial role in the physics of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. In particular, it may distort significantly the stability of straight vortex lines due to the rotonization of the Kelvin-wave spectrum. In this paper we analyze this instability showing that it leads to a second-order-like phase transition from a straight vortex-line into novel helical or snake-like configurations, depending on the dipole orientation.

Hybrid multi-site excitations in dipolar condensates in optical lattices

Strong 1D lattices usually lead to unconnected two-dimensional gases. The long-range character of the dipole-dipole interactions leads to a novel scenario where non-overlapping gases at different sites may interact significantly. We show that the excitations of non-overlapping condensates in 1D optical lattices acquire a band-like character, being collectively shared by different sites. In particular, the hybridization of the modes significantly enhances the rotonization of the excitations, and may induce roton-instability. We discuss the observability of this effect in on-going experiments.

Magnetic dipolar interaction in an atomic Bose Einstein condensate interferometer

We study the role played by the magnetic dipole interaction in an atomic interferometer based on an alkali Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable scattering length. We tune the s-wave interaction to zero using a magnetic Feshbach resonance and measure the decoherence of the interferometer induced by the weak residual interaction between the magnetic dipoles of the atoms. We prove that with a proper choice of the scattering length it is possible to compensate for the dipolar interaction and extend the coherence time of the interferometer. We put in evidence the anisotropic character of the dipolar interaction by working with two different experimental configurations for which the minima of decoherence are achieved for a positive and a negative value of the scattering length, respectively. Our results are supported by a theoretical model we develop. This model indicates that the magnetic dipole interaction should not represent a serious source of decoherence in atom interferometers based on Bose-Einstein condensates.

Phonon instability in two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

The partially attractive character of the dipole-dipole interaction leads to phonon instability in dipolar condensates, which is followed by collapse in three-dimensional geometries. We show that the nature of this instability is fundamentally different in two-dimensional condensates, due to the dipole-induced stabilization of two-dimensional bright solitons. As a consequence, a transient gas of attractive solitons is formed, and collapse may be avoided. In the presence of an harmonic confinement, the instability leads to transient pattern formation followed by the creation of stable two-dimensional solitons. This dynamics should be observable in on-going experiments, allowing for the creation of stable two-dimensional solitons for the first time ever in quantum gases.

Cold atom dynamics in non-Abelian gauge fields

The dynamics of ultracold neutral atoms subject to a non-Abelian gauge field is investigated. In particular we analyze in detail a simple experimental scheme to achieve a constant, but non-Abelian gauge field, and discuss in the frame of this gauge field the non-Abelian Aharanov-Bohm effect. In the last part of this paper, we discuss intrinsic non-Abelian effects in the dynamics of cold atomic wavepackets.

Damped Bloch Oscillations of Bose-Einstein Condensates in Disordered Potential Gradients

We investigate both experimentally and theoretically disorder induced damping of Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices. The spatially inhomogeneous force responsible for the damping is realised by a combination of a disordered optical and a magnetic gradient potential. We show that the inhomogeneity of this force results in a broadening of the quasimomentum spectrum, which in turn causes damping of the centre-of-mass oscillation. We quantitatively compare the obtained damping rates to the simulations using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our results are relevant for high precision experiments on very small forces, which require the observation of a large number of oscillation cycles.

Resonant spin-changing collisions in spinor Fermi gases

Spin-changing collisions in trapped Fermi gases may acquire a resonant character due to the compensation of quadratic Zeeman effect and trap energy. These resonances are absent in spinor condensates and pseudo-spin-1/2 Fermi gases, being a characteristic feature of high-spin Fermi gases that allows spinor physics at large magnetic fields. We analyze these resonances in detail for the case of lattice spinor fermions, showing that they permit to selectively target a spin-changing channel while suppressing all others. These resonances allow for the controlled creation of non-trivial quantum superpositions of many-particle states with entangled spin and trap degrees of freedom, which remarkably are magnetic-field insensitive. Finally, we show that the intersite tunneling may lead to a quantum phase transition described by an effective quantum Ising model.

Quasi-relativistic behavior of cold atoms in light fields

We study the influence of three laser beams on the center of mass motion of cold atoms with internal energy levels in a tripod configuration. We show that similar to electrons in graphene the atomic motion can be equivalent to the dynamics of ultra-relativistic two-component Dirac fermions. We propose and analyze an experimental setup for observing such a quasi-relativistic motion of ultracold atoms. We demonstrate that the atoms can experience negative refraction and focussing by Veselago-type lenses. We also show how the chiral nature of the atomic motion manifests itself as an oscillation of the atomic internal state population which depends strongly on the direction of the center of mass motion. For certain directions an atom remains in its initial state, whereas for other directions the populations undergo oscillations between a pair of internal states.

Landau levels of cold atoms in non-Abelian gauge fields

The Landau levels of cold atomic gases in non-Abelian gauge fields are analyzed. In particular we identify effects on the energy spectrum and density distribution which are purely due to the non-Abelian character of the fields. We investigate in detail non-Abelian generalizations of both the Landau and the symmetric gauge. Finally, we discuss how these non-Abelian Landau and symmetric gauges may be generated by means of realistically feasible lasers in a tripod scheme.

Stability of dark solitons in three dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

The dynamical stability of dark solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates is studied. For standard short-range interacting condensates dark solitons are unstable against transverse excitations in two and three dimensions. On the contrary, due to its non local character, the dipolar interaction allows for stable 3D stationary dark solitons, opening a qualitatively novel scenario in nonlinear atom optics. We discuss in detail the conditions to achieve this stability, which demand the use of an additional optical lattice, and the stability regimes.
