Dynamical transition from a quasi-one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate to a Tonks-Girardeau gas

We analyze in detail the expansion of a 1D Bose gas after removing the axial confinement. We show that during its one-dimensional expansion the density of the Bose gas does not follow a self-similar solution, but on the contrary, it asymptotically approaches a Tonks-Girardeau profile. Our analysis is based on a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable nonlinearity whose validity is discussed for the expansion problem, by comparing with an exact Bose-Fermi mapping for the case of an initial Tonks-Girardeau gas. For this case, the gas is shown to expand self-similarly, with a different similarity law compared to the one-dimensional Thomas-Fermi condensate.

Quantum phases of dipolar bosons in optical lattices

The ground state of dipolar bosons placed in an optical lattice is analyzed. We show that the modification of experimentally accessible parameters can lead to the realization and control of different quantum phases, including superfluid, supersolid, Mott insulator, checkerboard, and collapse phases.

Vortex-vortex interactions in toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the vortex dynamics and vortex-vortex interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in toroidal traps. We show that this particular geometry strongly distorts the vortex dynamics. The numerically calculated vortex trajectories are well explained by an analytical calculation based on image method and conformal mapping. Finally, the dissipation effects are discussed.

Phase Fluctuations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We demonstrate the existence of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) and study the dependence of those fluctuations on the system parameters. A strong dependence on temperature, atom number, and trapping geometry is observed. Phase fluctuations directly affect the coherence properties of BECs. In particular, we observe instances where the phase coherence length is significantly smaller than the condensate size. Our method of detecting phase fluctuations is based on their transformation into density modulations after ballistic expansion. An analytic theory describing this transformation is developed.

Ultracold dipolar gases - a challenge for experiments and theory

We present a review of recent results concerning the physics of ultracold trapped dipolar gases. In particular, we discuss the Bose-Einstein condensation for dipolar Bose gases and the BCS transition for dipolar Fermi gases. In both cases we stress the dominant role of the trap geometry in determining the properties of the system. We present also results concerning bosonic dipolar gases in optical lattices and the possibility of obtaining variety of different quantum phases in such case. Finally, we analyze various possible routes towards achieving ultracold dipolar gases.

Collapse dynamics of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the implosion and subsequent explosion of a trapped condensate after the scattering length is switched to a negative value. Our results compare very well qualitatively and fairly well quantitatively with the results of recent experiments at JILA.

Expansion of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in an atomic waveguide

The expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic waveguide is analyzed. We study different regimes of expansion, and identify a transient regime between one-dimensional and three-dimensional dynamics, in which the properties of the condensate and its further expansion can be well explained by reducing the transversal dynamics to a two-level system. The relevance of this regime in current experiments is discussed.

Vortex-vortex interaction in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

The vortex-vortex interaction in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates is shown to present characteristic effects not possible in single-component condensates. In particular, vortices in different components undergo separate, but concentric, orbits for both same and opposite circulation. In addition, contrary to the well-known behavior in single-component condensates, vortices with the same circulation created in the less dense component merge in the presence of dissipation, allowing for the creation of metastable vortices with more than one quantum of circulation.

Generation and evolution of vortex-antivortex pairs in Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a method for generating and controlling a spatially separated vortex--antivortex pair in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidal potential. Our simulations of the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation show that in toroidal condensates vortex dynamics are different from the dynamics in the homogeneous case. Our numerical results agree well with analytical calculations using the image method. Our proposal offers an effective example of coherent generation and control of vortex dynamics in atomic condensates.

Observation of Phase Fluctuations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

The occurrence of phase fluctuations due to thermal excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is studied for a variety of temperatures and trap geometries. We observe the statistical nature of the appearence of phase fluctuations and characterize the dependence of their average value on temperature, number of particles and the trapping potential. We find pronounced phase fluctuations for condensates in very elongated traps in a broad temperature range. The results are of great importance for the realization of BEC in quasi 1D geometries, for matter wave interferometry with BECs, as well as for coherence properties of guided atom laser beams.

Loading of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the boson-accumulation regime

We study the optical loading of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by spontaneous emission of atoms in excited electronic state in the Boson-Accumulation Regime. We generalize the previous simplified analysis of ref. [Phys. Rev. A 53, 2466 (1996)], to a 3D case in which more than one trap level of the excited state trap is considered. By solving the corresponding quantum many-body master equation, we demonstrate that also for this general situation the photon reabsorption can help to increase the condensate fraction. Such effect could be employed to realize a continuous atom laser, and to overcome condensate losses.

Dark solitons in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

The creation and interaction of dark solitons in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is investigated. For a miscible case, the interaction of dark solitons in different components is studied. Various possible scenarios are presented, including the formation of a soliton-soliton bound pair. We also analyze the soliton propagation in the presence of domains, and show that a dark soliton can be transferred from one component to the other at the domain wall when it exceeds a critical velocity. For lower velocities multiple reflections within the domain are observed, where the soliton is evaporated and accelerated after each reflection until it finally escapes from the domain.

Continuous optical loading of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

The continuous pumping of atoms into a Bose-Einstein condensate via spontaneous emission from a thermal reservoir is analyzed. We consider the case of atoms with a three-level $Λ$ scheme, in which one of the atomic transitions has a very much shorter life-time than the other one. We found that in such scenario the photon reabsorption in dense clouds can be considered negligible. If in addition inelastic processes can be neglected, we find that optical pumping can be used to continuously load and refill Bose-Einstein condensates, i.e. provides a possible way to achieve a continuous atom laser.

Laser Induced Condensation of Bosonic Gases in Traps

We consider collective laser cooling of atomic gas in the Festina lente regime, when the heating effects associated with photon reabsorptions are suppressed. We demonstrate that an appropriate sequence of laser pulses allows to condense a gas of trapped bosonic atoms into the ground level of the trap in the presence of collisions. Such condensation is robust and can be achieved in experimentally feasible traps. We extend significantly the validity of our previous numerical studies, and present new analytic results concerning condensation in the limit of rapid thermalization. We discuss in detail necessary conditions to realize all optical condensate in weak condensation regime and beyond.

Cooling of a small sample of Bose atoms with accidental degeneracy

A system of bosons in a harmonic trap is cooled via their interactions with a thermal reservoir. We derive the master equation that governs the evolution of the system and may describe diverse physical situations: laser cooling, symphatetic cooling, etc. We investigate in detail the dynamics of the gas in the Lamb-Dicke limit, whereby the size of the trap is small in comparison to the de Broglie wavelength of the reservoir quanta. In this case, the dynamics is characterized by two time scales. First, an equilibrium is reached on a fast time scale within the degenerated subspaces of the system. Then, an equilibrium between these subspaces is reached on a slow time scale.

Four-wave mixing in degenerate atomic gases

We study the process of four-wave mixing (4WM) in ultracold degenerate atomic gases. In particular we address the problem of 4WM in boson-fermion mixtures. We develop an approximate description of such processes using asymptotic analysis of high order perturbation theory taking into account quantum statistics. We perform also numerical simulations of 4WM in boson-fermion mixtures and obtain an analytic and numerical estimate of the efficiency of the process.

Bose-Einstein condensation in trapped dipolar gases

We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation in a trapped gas of bosonic particles interacting dominantly via dipole-dipole forces. We find that in this case the mean-field interparticle interaction and, hence, the stability diagram are governed by the trapping geometry. Possible physical realisations include ultracold heteronuclear molecules, or atoms with laser induced electric dipole moments.

Time correlations of a laser-induced Bose-Einstein condensate

We analyze the multi-time correlations of a laser-induced Bose-Einstein condensate. We use quantum stochastic methods to obtain under certain circumstances a Fokker-Planck equation which describes the phase-difussion process, and obtain an analytical expression of the two-time correlations. We perform also quantum Monte Carlo numerical simulations of the correlations, which are in good agreement with the predicted analytical results.
