Mean-field theory of Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices

We determine the phase diagram of a mixture of ultracold bosons and polarized fermions placed in an optical lattice using mean field theory. In the limit of strong atom-atom interactions, there exist quantum phases that involve pairing of fermions with one or more bosons, or bosonic holes, respectively. We obtain the analytic form of the phase boundaries separating these composite fermion phases from the bosonic superfluid coexisting with Fermi liquid. We compare the results with numerical simulations and discuss their validity and relevance for current experiments.

Atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in an optical lattice

A mixture of ultracold bosons and fermions placed in an optical lattice constitutes a novel kind of quantum gas, and leads to phenomena, which so far have been discussed neither in atomic physics, nor in condensed matter physics. We discuss the phase diagram at low temperatures, and in the limit of strong atom-atom interactions, and predict the existence of quantum phases that involve pairing of fermions with one or more bosons, or, respectively, bosonic holes. The resulting composite fermions may form, depending on the system parameters, a normal Fermi liquid, a density wave, a superfluid liquid, or an insulator with fermionic domains. We discuss the feasibility for observing such phases in current experiments.

Atomic quantum gases in Kagomé lattices

We demonstrate the possibility of creating and controlling an ideal and \textit{trimerized} optical Kagomé lattice, and study the low temperature physics of various atomic gases in such lattices. In the trimerized Kagomé lattice, a Bose gas exhibits a Mott transition with fractional filling factors, whereas a spinless interacting Fermi gas at 2/3 filling behaves as a quantum magnet on a triangular lattice. Finally, a Fermi-Fermi mixture at half filling for both components represents a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet with a resonating-valence-bond ground state and quantum spin liquid behavior dominated by continuous spectrum of singlet and triplet excitations. We discuss the method of preparing and observing such quantum spin liquid employing molecular Bose condensates.

Scissors modes of two-component degenerate gases: Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate the scissors modes in binary mixtures of degenerate dilute quantum gases, for both Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures. For the latter we consider both the superfluid and normal hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes. We analyze the dependence of the frequencies of the scissors modes and their character as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling and the trap geometry. We show that the scissors mode can reveal a clear trace of the hydrodynamic behavior of the Fermi gas.

Creation of discrete solitons and observation of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We analyze the generation and mobility of discrete solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in an optical lattice under realistic experimental conditions. We discuss first the creation of 1D discrete solitons, for both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. We then address the issue of their mobility, focusing our attention on the conditions for the experimental observability of the Peierls-Nabarro barrier. Finally we report on the generation of self-trapped structures in two and three dimensions. Discrete solitons may open alternative routes for the manipulation and transport of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Second Order Correlation Function of a Phase Fluctuating Bose-Einstein Condensate

The coherence properties of phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates are studied both theoretically and experimentally. We derive a general expression for the N-particle correlation function of a condensed Bose gas in a highly elongated trapping potential. The second order correlation function is analyzed in detail and an interferometric method to directly measure it is discussed and experimentally implemented. Using a Bragg diffraction interferometer, we measure intensity correlations in the interference pattern generated by two spatially displaced copies of a parent condensate. Our experiment demonstrates how to characterize the second order correlation function of a highly elongated condensate and to measure its phase coherence length.

Atomic Bose and Anderson glasses in optical lattices

An ultra cold atomic Bose gas in an optical lattice is shown to provide an ideal system for the controlled analysis of disordered Bose lattice gases. This goal may be easily achieved under the current experimental conditions, by introducing a pseudo-random potential created by a second additional lattice or, alternatively, by placing a speckle pattern on the main lattice. We show that for a non commensurable filling factor, in the strong interaction limit, a controlled growing of the disorder drives a dynamical transition from superfluid to Bose-glass phase. Similarly, in the weak interaction limit, a dynamical transition from superfluid to Anderson-glass phase may be observed. In both regimes, we show that even very low-intensity disorder-inducing lasers cause large modifications of the superfluid fraction of the system.

Three-dimensional quasi-Tonks gas in a harmonic trap

We analyze the macroscopic dynamics of a Bose gas in a harmonic trap with a superimposed two-dimensional optical lattice, assuming a weak coupling between different lattice sites. We consider the situation in which the local chemical potential at each lattice site can be considered as that provided by the Lieb-Liniger solution. Due to the weak coupling between sites and the form of the chemical potential, the three-dimensional ground-state density profile and the excitation spectrum acquire remarkable properties different from both 1D and 3D gases. We call this system a quasi-Tonks gas. We discuss the range of applicability of this regime, as well as realistic experimental situations where it can be observed.

Violation of self-similarity in the expansion of a 1D Bose gas

The expansion of a 1D Bose gas is investigated employing the Lieb-Liniger equation of state within the local density approximation. We show that during the expansion the density profile of the gas does not follow a self-similar solution, as one would expect from a simple scaling Ansatz. We carry out a variational calculation, which recovers the numerical results for the expansion, the equilibrium properties of the density profile, and the frequency of the lowest compressional mode. The variational approach allows for the analysis of the expansion in all interaction regimes between the mean field and the Tonks-Girardeau limits, and in particular shows the range of parameters for which the expansion violates self-similarity.

Laser cooling of trapped Fermi gases

The collective Raman cooling of trapped one- and two-component Fermi gases is considered. We obtain the quantum master equation that describes the laser cooling in the festina lente regime, for which the heating due to photon reabsorption can be neglected. For the two-component case the collisional processes are described within the formalism of quantum Boltzmann master equation. The inhibition of the spontaneous emission can be overcome by properly adjusting the spontaneous Raman rate during the cooling. Our numerical results based in Monte Carlo simulations of the corresponding rate equations, show that three-dimensional temperatures of the order of $0.08 T_F$ (single-component) and $0.03 T_F$ (two-component) can be achieved. We investigate the statistical properties of the equilibrium distribution of the laser-cooled gas, showing that the number fluctuations are enhanced compared with the thermal distribution close to the Fermi surface. Finally, we analyze the heating related to the background losses, concluding that our laser-cooling scheme should maintain the temperature of the gas without significant additional losses.

Laser Cooling of Trapped Fermi Gases deeply below the Fermi Temperature

We study the collective Raman cooling of a polarized trapped Fermi gas in the Festina Lente regime, when the heating effects associated with photon reabsorptions are suppressed. We predict that by adjusting the spontaneous Raman emission rates and using appropriately designed anharmonic traps, temperatures of the order of 2.7% of the Fermi temperature can be achieved in 3D.

Laser cooling of a trapped two-component Fermi gas

The collective Raman cooling of a trapped two-component Fermi gas is analyzed. We develop the quantum master equation that describes the collisions and the laser cooling, in the festina lente regime, where the heating due to photon reabsorption can be neglected. The numerical results based on Monte Carlo simulations show, that three-dimensional temperatures of the order of 0.008 T_F can be achieved. We analyze the heating related to the background losses, and conclude that our laser-cooling scheme can maintain the temperature of the gas without significant additional losses. Finally we derive an analytic expression for the temperature of a trapped Fermi gas heated by background collisions, that agrees very well with the data obtained from the numerical simulation.

Continuous optical loading of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime

We discuss the optical loading of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the Thomas-Fermi regime. The condensate is loaded via spontaneous emission from a reservoir of excited-state atoms. By means of a master equation formalism, we discuss the modification of the condensate temperature during the loading. We identify the threshold temperature, $T_{th}$, above (below) which the loading process leads to cooling (heating), respectively. The consequences of our analysis for the continuous loading of an atom laser are discussed.

Roton-maxon spectrum and stability of trapped dipolar condensates

We find that pancake dipolar condensates can exhibit a roton-maxon character of the excitation spectrum, so far only observed in superfluid helium. We also obtain a condition for the dynamical stability of these condensates. The spectrum and the border of instability are tunable by varying the particle density and/or the confining potential. This opens wide possibilities for manipulating the superfluid properties of dipolar condensates.

Atom optics with rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

The atom optics of Bose-Einstein condensates containing a vortex of circulation one is discussed. We first analyze in detail the reflection of such a condensate falling on an atomic mirror. In a second part, we consider a rotating condensate in the case of attractive interactions. We show that for sufficiently large nonlinearity the rotational symmetry of the rotating condensate is broken.

Characterization and control of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

Quasi one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in elongated traps exhibit significant phase fluctuations even at very low temperatures. We present recent experimental results on the dynamic transformation of phase fluctuations into density modulations during time-of-flight and show the excellent quantitative agreement with the theoretical prediction. In addition we confirm that under our experimental conditions, in the magnetic trap density modulations are strongly suppressed even when the phase fluctuates. The paper also discusses our theoretical results on control of the condensate phase by employing a time-dependent perturbation. Our results set important limitations on future applications of BEC in precision atom interferometry and atom optics, but at the same time suggest pathways to overcome these limitations.

Ground state and elementary excitations of single and binary Bose-Einstein condensates of trapped dipolar gases

We analyze the ground-state properties and the excitation spectrum of Bose-Einstein condensates of trapped dipolar particles. First, we consider the case of a single-component polarized dipolar gas. For this case we discuss the influence of the trapping geometry on the stability of the condensate as well as the effects of the dipole-dipole interaction on the excitation spectrum. We discuss also the ground state and excitations of a gas composed of two antiparallel dipolar components.

Creation of a dipolar superfluid in optical lattices

We show that by loading a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of two different atomic species into an optical lattice, it is possible to achieve a Mott-insulator phase with exactly one atom of each species per lattice site. A subsequent photo-association leads to the formation of one heteronuclear molecule with a large electric dipole moment, at each lattice site. The melting of such dipolar Mott-insulator creates a dipolar superfluid, and eventually a dipolar molecular BEC.
