Preserving orbital order in a layered manganite by ultrafast hybridized band excitation

In the mixed-valence manganites, a near-infrared laser typically melts the orbital and spin order simultaneously, corresponding to the photoinduced $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ excitations in the Mott-Hubbard bands of manganese. Here, we use ultrafast methods -- both femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction and optical reflectivity -- to demonstrate that the orbital response in the layered manganite Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ ($\it{x}$ = 2/3) does not follow this scheme. At the photoexcitation saturation fluence, the orbital order is only diminished by a few percent in the transient state. Instead of the typical $d^{1}d^{0}$ $\xrightarrow{}$ $d^{0}d^{1}$ transition, a near-infrared pump in this compound promotes a fundamentally distinct mechanism of charge transfer, the $d^{0}$ $ \xrightarrow{}$ $d^{1}L$, where $\it{L}$ denotes a hole in the oxygen band. This novel finding may pave a new avenue for selectively manipulating specific types of order in complex materials of this class.

Establishing a New Technique for Discovering Large-Scale Structure Using the ORELSE Survey

The Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey is an ongoing imaging and spectroscopic campaign initially designed to study the effects of environment on galaxy evolution in high-redshift ($z\sim1$) large-scale structures. We use its rich data in combination with a powerful new technique, Voronoi tessellation Monte-Carlo (VMC) mapping, to search for serendipitous galaxy overdensities at $0.55 < z < 1.37$ within 15 ORELSE fields, a combined spectroscopic footprint of $\sim$1.4 square degrees. Through extensive tests with both observational data and our own mock galaxy catalogs, we optimize the method's many free parameters to maximize its efficacy for general overdensity searches. Our overdensity search yielded 402 new overdensity candidates with precisely measured redshifts and an unprecedented sensitivity down to low total overdensity masses ($\mathcal{M}_{tot} \gtrsim 5\times 10^{13} M_{\odot}$). Using the mock catalogs, we estimated the purity and completeness of our overdensity catalog as a function of redshift, total mass, and spectroscopic redshift fraction, finding impressive levels of both 0.92/0.83 and 0.60/0.49 for purity/completeness at $z=0.8$ and $z=1.2$, respectively, for all overdensity masses at spectroscopic fractions of $\sim$20%. With VMC mapping, we are able to measure precise systemic redshifts, provide an estimate of the total gravitating mass, and maintain high levels of purity and completeness at $z\sim1$ even with only moderate levels of spectroscopy. Other methods (e.g., red-sequence overdensities and hot medium reliant detections) begin to fail at similar redshifts, which attests to VMC mapping's potential to be a powerful tool for current and future wide-field galaxy evolution surveys at $z\sim1$ and beyond.

Magnetic Microphase Inhomogeneity as a Thermodynamic Precursor of Ground State Phase Separation in Weakly Coupled Spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ Chains

$γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is a quasi one-dimensional spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ magnet that possesses two distinct magnetic orders in the ground state with modulation vectors $k_\mathrm{1}$ = ($\frac{1}{2}$, 0, 0) and $k_\mathrm{2}$ = ($\frac{1}{4}$, 0, -$\frac{1}{4}$), respectively. Here, we use muon spin relaxation and rotation to reveal the thermodynamics of the magnetic phase separation in this compound. In the paramagnetic (PM) region, short-range correlated spin clusters emerge at $T_\mathrm{m}$ $\simeq$ 26 K at the $\it{partial}$ expense of the PM volume. Upon further cooling, we show that these emergent clusters become spatially coherent at $T_\mathrm{N2}$ = 7.5 K and eventually form the $k_\mathrm{2}$ order at $T^{\star}$ = 5.6 K, while the remaining PM spins are driven into the $k_\mathrm{1}$ state at $T_\mathrm{N1}$ = 6.6 K. These results stress magnetic microphase inhomogeneity as a thermodynamic precursor for the ground state phase separation in weakly coupled spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ chains.

Magnetic phase diagram of the quantum spin chain compound SrCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$: a single-crystal neutron diffraction study in magnetic field

We explore the spin states in the quantum spin chain compound SrCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ up to 14.9 T and down to 50 mK, using single-crystal neutron diffraction. Upon cooling in zero-field, antiferromagnetic (AFM) order of Néel type develops at $T_\mathrm{N}$ $\simeq$ 5.0 K. Applying an external magnetic field ($H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis) destabilizes the Néel order, leading to an order-disorder transition when applying a field between $T_\mathrm{N}$ and $\sim$ 1.5 K. Below 1.5 K, we observe a Néel to longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW) order transition at 3.9 T, and a LSDW to emergent AFM order transition at 7.0 T. Our results also reveal several unique signatures for the states of the spins that are not present in the isostructural counterpart BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$.

Low-loss silicon core fibre platform for broadband nonlinear photonics in the mid-infrared

Broadband mid-infrared light sources are highly desired for wide-ranging applications that span free-space communications to spectroscopy. In recent years, silicon has attracted great interest as a platform for nonlinear optical wavelength conversion in this region, owing to its low losses (linear and nonlinear) and high stability. However, most research in this area has made use of small core waveguides fabricated from the silicon-on-insulator platform, which suffer from high absorption losses of the silica cladding, limiting their ability to generate light beyond 3 $μ$m. Here we design and demonstrate a compact silicon core, silica clad waveguide platform that has low losses across the entire silicon transparency window. The waveguides are fabricated from a silicon core fibre that has been tapered to engineer the mode properties to ensure efficient nonlinear propagation in the core with minimal interaction of the mid-infrared light with the cladding. These waveguides exhibit many benefits of fibre platforms, such as high coupling efficiency and power handling capabilities, allowing for the generation of mid-infrared supercontinuum spectra with high brightness and coherence spanning almost two octaves (1.6-5.3 $μ$m).

Evaluating Tests of Virialization and Substructure Using Galaxy Clusters in the ORELSE Survey

We evaluated the effectiveness of different indicators of cluster virialization using 12 large-scale structures in the ORELSE survey spanning from $0.7<z<1.3$. We located diffuse X-ray emission from 16 galaxy clusters using Chandra observations. We studied the properties of these clusters and their members, using Chandra data in conjunction with optical and near-IR imaging and spectroscopy. We measured X-ray luminosities and gas temperatures of each cluster, as well as velocity dispersions of their member galaxies. We compared these results to scaling relations derived from virialized clusters, finding significant offsets of up to 3-4$σ$ for some clusters, which could indicate they are disturbed or still forming. We explored if other properties of the clusters correlated with these offsets by performing a set of tests of virialization and substructure on our sample, including Dressler-Schectman tests, power ratios, analyses of the velocity distributions of galaxy populations, and centroiding differences. For comparison to a wide range of studies, we used two sets of tests: ones that did and did not use spectral energy distribution fitting to obtain rest-frame colours, stellar masses, and photometric redshifts of galaxies. Our results indicated that the difference between the stellar mass or light mean-weighted center and the X-ray center, as well as the projected offset of the most-massive/brightest cluster galaxy from other cluster centroids had the strongest correlations with scaling relation offsets, implying they are the most robust indicators of cluster virialization and can be used for this purpose when X-ray data is insufficiently deep for reliable $L_X$ and $T_X$ measurements.

Unconventional magnetic phase separation in $γ$-CoV$_2$O$_6$

We have explored the magnetism in the non-geometrically frustrated spin-chain system $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ which possesses a complex magnetic exchange network. Our neutron diffraction patterns at low temperatures ($T$ $\leqslant$ $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ = 6.6 K) are best described by a model in which two magnetic phases coexist in a volume ratio 65(1) : 35(1), with each phase consisting of a single spin modulation. This model fits previous studies and our observations better than the model proposed by Lenertz $et$ $al$ in J. Phys. Chem. C 118, 13981 (2014), which consisted of one phase with two spin modulations. By decreasing the temperature from $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, the minority phase of our model undergoes an incommensurate-commensurate lock-in transition at $T^{*}$ = 5.6 K. Based on these results, we propose that phase separation is an alternative approach for degeneracy-lifting in frustrated magnets.

Absence of magnetic long range order in Y$_{2}$CrSbO$_{7}$: bond-disorder induced magnetic frustration in a ferromagnetic pyrochlore

The consequences of nonmagnetic-ion dilution for the pyrochlore family Y$_{2}$($M_{1-x}N_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($M$ = magnetic ion, $N$ = nonmagnetic ion) have been investigated. As a first step, we experimentally examine the magnetic properties of Y$_{2}$CrSbO$_{7}$ ($x$ = 0.5), in which the magnetic sites (Cr$^{3+}$) are percolative. Although the effective Cr-Cr spin exchange is ferromagnetic, as evidenced by a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, $Θ_\mathrm{CW}$ = 20.1(6) K, our high-resolution neutron powder diffraction measurements detect no sign of magnetic long range order down to 2 K. In order to understand our observations, we performed numerical simulations to study the bond-disorder introduced by the ionic size mismatch between $M$ and $N$. Based on these simulations, bond-disorder ($x_{b}$ $\simeq$ 0.23) percolates well ahead of site-disorder ($x_{s}$ $\simeq$ 0.61). This model successfully reproduces the critical region (0.2 < $x$ < 0.25) for the Néel to spin glass phase transition in Zn(Cr$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{4}$, where the Cr/Ga-sublattice forms the same corner-sharing tetrahedral network as the $M/N$-sublattice in Y$_{2}$($M_{1-x}N_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{7}$, and the rapid drop in magnetically ordered moment in the Néel phase [Lee $et$ $al$, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014405 (2008)]. Our study stresses the nonnegligible role of bond-disorder on magnetic frustration, even in ferromagnets.

X-Ray Emitting Active Galactic Nuclei from z = 0.6-1.3 in the Intermediate and High-Density Environments of the ORELSE Survey

We studied AGN activity in twelve LSSs in the ORELSE survey, at 0.65<z<1.28, using a combination of Chandra observations, optical and NIR imaging and spectroscopy. We located a total of 61 AGNs across our sample that were successfully matched to optical counterparts in the LSSs. Seeking to study AGN triggering mechanisms, we examined the spatial distribution of the AGNs and their average spectral properties. We found that AGN populations across our sample had less time since the last starburst than the overall galaxy populations. We did not find any relation between AGN activity and location within the LSSs, suggesting triggering mechanisms which depend on global environment are at most sub-dominant. To focus on differences between our AGNs, we grouped them into four sub-samples based on the spectral properties of their parents LSSs. We found one of the sub-samples, SG0023 & SC1604, stood out from the others: AGNs in this sample were disproportionately luminous, their average time since the last starburst event was the smallest, despite the fact that this was not true of the overall galaxy population in those LSSs, and both the AGNs and the overall galaxy population had the largest fraction of close kinematic pairs, which indicates a higher rate of galaxy mergers and interactions. These results suggest that major mergers are driving AGN activity in SG0023 & SC1604, while other processes are likely triggering less luminous AGNs in the rest of our sample. Additionally, minor mergers are unlikely to play a significant role, since the same conditions that lead to more major mergers should should also lead to more minor mergers, which is not observed in SG0023 & SC1604.

The electronic properties of graphene on metal modified SiO2 substrate

Based on first principles calculation, the electronic properties of graphene on metal (Ti, Ca, Ni, Mn, Co, Fe, Cr, K) modified SiO2 substrate have been studied. The results of binding energies supported graphene indicate that the metal atoms are adsorbed more stably on O surface than on Si surface of SiO2 substrate, and graphene is adsorbed very stably on metal modified substrate. The band structures of supported graphene are similar with that of suspending graphene when deposited on Co modified SiO2 surface, but change obviously with the effect of decorated Fe atoms. Interesting, a semi-metal band structure with a 1-2 eV gap in spin-up state will occur on the magnetic atoms decorated surface.

Perfect spin-fillter and spin-valve in carbon atomic chains

We report ab initio calculations of spin-dependent transport in single atomic carbon chains bridging two zigzag graphene nanoribbon electrodes. Our calculations show that carbon atomic chains coupled to graphene electrodes are perfect spin-filters with almost 100 % spin polarization. Moreover, carbon atomic chains can also show a very large bias-dependent magnetoresistance up to 1000000 % as perfect spin-valves. These two spin-related properties are independent on the length of carbon chains. Our report, the spin-filter and spin-valve are conserved in a single device simultaneously, opens a new way to the application of all-carbon composite spintronics.

Electron Transport Properties of Atomic Carbon Nanowires between Graphene Electrodes

Long, stable and free-standing linear atomic carbon wires have been carved out from graphene recently [Meyer et al: Nature (London) 2008, 454, 319; Jin et al: Phys: Rev: Lett: 2009, 102, 205501]. They can be considered as the extremely narrow graphene nanoribbons or extremely thin carbon nanotubes. It might even be possible to make use of high strength and identical (without charity) carbon wires as a transport channel or on-chip interconnects for field-effect transistors. Here we investigate electron transport properties of linear atomic carbon wire-graphene junctions by nonequilibruim Green's function combined with density functional theory. For short wires, linear ballistic transport is observed in odd-numbered wire but destroyed by Peirerls distortion in even-numbered wire. For wires longer than 2.1 nm as fabricated above, however, the ballistic conductance of carbon wire-graphene junctions is remarkably robust against the Peierls distortion, structural imperfections, and hydrogen impurity adsorption of the linear carbon wires except oxygen impurities. As such, the epoxy groups might be the origin of low conductance experimentally observed in carbon wires. Moreover, double atomic carbon wires exhibit negative differential resistance (NDR) effect.

Ferromagnetism in 2p Light Element-Doped II-oxide and III-nitride Semiconductors

II-oxide and III-nitride semiconductors doped by nonmagnetic 2p light elements are investigated as potential dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS). Based on our first-principle calculations, nitrogen doped ZnO, carbon doped ZnO, and carbon doped AlN are predicted to be ferromagnetic. The ferromagnetism of such DMS materials can be attributed to a p-d exchange-like p-p coupling interaction which is derived from the similar symmetry and wave function between the impurity (p-like t_2) and valence (p) states. We also propose a co-doping mechanism, using beryllium and nitrogen as dopants in ZnO, to enhance the ferromagnetic coupling and to increase the solubility and activity.

Efficiency of Molecular Hydrogen Formation on Silicates

We report on laboratory measurements of molecular hydrogen formation and recombination on an olivine slab as a function of surface temperature under conditions relevant to those encountered in the interstellar medium. On the basis of our experimental evidence, we recognize that there are two main regimes of H coverage that are of astrophysical importance; for each of them we provide an expression giving the production rate of molecular hydrogen in interstellar clouds.
