Scaling behaviour under the influence of a homogeneous size-dependent perturbation

We study the finite-size scaling behaviour at the critical point, resulting from the addition of a homogeneous size-dependent perturbation, decaying as an inverse power of the system size. The scaling theory is first formulated in a general framework and then illustrated using three concrete problems for which exact results are obtained.

Reaction-diffusion on the fully-connected lattice: $A+A\rightarrow A$

Diffusion-coagulation can be simply described by a dynamic where particles perform a random walk on a lattice and coalesce with probability unity when meeting on the same site. Such processes display non-equilibrium properties with strong fluctuations in low dimensions. In this work we study this problem on the fully-connected lattice, an infinite-dimensional system in the thermodynamic limit, for which mean-field behaviour is expected. Exact expressions for the particle density distribution at a given time and survival time distribution for a given number of particles are obtained. In particular we show that the time needed to reach a finite number of surviving particles (vanishing density in the scaling limit) displays strong fluctuations and extreme value statistics, characterized by a universal class of non-Gaussian distributions with singular behaviour.

One-dimensional q-state Potts model with multi-site interactions

A one-dimensional (1D) $q$-state Potts model with $N$ sites, $m$-site interaction $K$ in a field $H$ is studied for arbitrary values of $m$. Exact results for the partition function and the two-point correlation function are obtained at $H=0$. The system in a field is shown to be self-dual. Using a change of Potts variables, it is mapped onto a standard 2D Potts model, with first-neighbour interactions $K$ and $H$, on a cylinder with helical boundary conditions (BC). The 2D system has a length $N/m$ and a transverse size $m$. Thus the Potts chain with multi-site interactions is expected to develop a 2D critical singularity along the self-duality line, $(e^{qK}-1)(e^{qH}-1)=q$, when $N/m\to\infty$ and $m\to\infty$.

One-dimensional Ising model with multispin interactions

We study the spin-$1/2$ Ising chain with multispin interactions $K$ involving the product of $m$ successive spins, for general values of $m$. Using a change of spin variables the zero-field partition function of a finite chain is obtained for free and periodic boundary conditions (BC) and we calculate the two-spin correlation function. When placed in an external field $H$ the system is shown to be self-dual. Using another change of spin variables the one-dimensional (1D) Ising model with multispin interactions in a field is mapped onto a zero-field rectangular Ising model with first-neighbour interactions $K$ and $H$. The 2D system, with size $m\times N/m$, has the topology of a cylinder with helical BC. In the thermodynamic limit $N/m\to\infty$, $m\to\infty$, a 2D critical singularity develops on the self-duality line, $\sinh 2K\sinh 2H=1$.

Records for the number of distinct sites visited by a random walk on the fully-connected lattice

We consider a random walk on the fully-connected lattice with $N$ sites and study the time evolution of the number of distinct sites $s$ visited by the walker on a subset with $n$ sites. A record value $v$ is obtained for $s$ at a record time $t$ when the walker visits a site of the subset for the first time. The record time $t$ is a partial covering time when $v<n$ and a total covering time when $v=n$. The probability distributions for the number of records $s$, the record value $v$ and the record (covering) time $t$, involving $r$-Stirling numbers, are obtained using generating function techniques. The mean values, variances and skewnesses are deduced from the generating functions. In the scaling limit the probability distributions for $s$ and $v$ lead to the same Gaussian density. The fluctuations of the record time $t$ are also Gaussian at partial covering, when $n-v={\mathrm O}(n)$. They are distributed according to the type-I Gumbel extreme-value distribution at total covering, when $v=n$. A discrete sequence of generalized Gumbel distributions, indexed by $n-v$, is obtained at almost total covering, when $n-v={\mathrm O}(1)$. These generalized Gumbel distributions are crossing over to the Gaussian distribution when $n-v$ increases.

Probability distribution of the number of distinct sites visited by a random walk on the finite-size fully-connected lattice

The probability distribution of the number $s$ of distinct sites visited up to time $t$ by a random walk on the fully-connected lattice with $N$ sites is first obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem associated with the discrete master equation. Then, using generating function techniques, we compute the joint probability distribution of $s$ and $r$, where $r$ is the number of sites visited only once up to time $t$. Mean values, variances and covariance are deduced from the generating functions and their finite-size-scaling behaviour is studied. Introducing properly centered and scaled variables $u$ and $v$ for $r$ and $s$ and working in the scaling limit ($t\to\infty$, $N\to\infty$ with $w=t/N$ fixed) the joint probability density of $u$ and $v$ is shown to be a bivariate Gaussian density. It follows that the fluctuations of $r$ and $s$ around their mean values in a finite-size system are Gaussian in the scaling limit. The same type of finite-size scaling is expected to hold on periodic lattices above the critical dimension $d_{\rm c}=2$.

Evolution of the magnetization after a local quench in the critical transverse-field Ising chain

We study the time evolution of the local magnetization in the critical Ising chain in a transverse field after a sudden change of the parameters at a defect. The relaxation of the defect magnetization is algebraic and the corresponding exponent, which is a continuous function of the defect parameters, is calculated exactly. In finite chains the relaxation is oscillating in time and its form is conjectured on the basis of precise numerical calculations.

On the number of common sites visited by N random walkers

Majumdar and Tamm [Phys. Rev. E 86 021135 (2012), arXiv:1206.6184] recently obtained analytical expressions for the mean number of common sites W_N(t) visited up to time t by N independent random walkers starting from the origin of a d-dimensional lattice. In this short note I show how the different regimes and the corresponding asymptotic power laws can be retrieved using the notion of fractal intersection.

On a random walk with memory and its relation to Markovian processes

We study a one-dimensional random walk with memory in which the step lengths to the left and to the right evolve at each step in order to reduce the wandering of the walker. The feedback is quite efficient and lead to a non-diffusive walk. The time evolution of the displacement is given by an equivalent Markovian dynamical process. The probability density for the position of the walker is the same at any time as for a random walk with shrinking steps, although the two-time correlation functions are quite different.

Aperiodic Ising model on the Bethe lattice: Exact results

We consider the Ising model on the Bethe lattice with aperiodic modulation of the couplings, which has been studied numerically in Phys. Rev. E 77, 041113 (2008). Here we present a relevance-irrelevance criterion and solve the critical behavior exactly for marginal aperiodic sequences. We present analytical formulae for the continuously varying critical exponents and discuss a relationship with the (surface) critical behavior of the aperiodic quantum Ising chain.

Lattice animals on a staircase and generalized Fibonacci numbers

We study the statistics of column-convex lattice animals generated by the stacking of squares on a staircase with step height p. We calculate the number of animals with area k living on l stairs. The total number of animals with area k is given by the generalized Fibonacci number F_p(k). Exact results for the mean length and mean height of animals with area k are also obtained and we examine their asymptotic behaviour.

Critical behavior at the interface between two systems belonging to different universality classes

We consider the critical behavior at an interface which separates two semi-infinite subsystems belonging to different universality classes, thus having different set of critical exponents, but having a common transition temperature. We solve this problem analytically in the frame of mean-field theory, which is then generalized using phenomenological scaling considerations. A large variety of interface critical behavior is obtained which is checked numerically on the example of two-dimensional q-state Potts models with q=2 to 4. Weak interface couplings are generally irrelevant, resulting in the same critical behavior at the interface as for a free surface. With strong interface couplings, the interface remains ordered at the bulk transition temperature. More interesting is the intermediate situation, the special interface transition, when the critical behavior at the interface involves new critical exponents, which however can be expressed in terms of the bulk and surface exponents of the two subsystems. We discuss also the smooth or discontinuous nature of the order parameter profile.

Two-dimensional Ising model with self-dual biaxially correlated disorder

We consider the Ising model on the square lattice with biaxially correlated random ferromagnetic couplings, the critical point of which is fixed by self-duality. The disorder represents a relevant perturbation according to the extended Harris criterion. Critical properties of the system are studied by large scale Monte Carlo simulations. The correlation length critical exponent, ν=2.005(5), corresponds to that expected in a system with isotropic correlated long-range disorder, whereas the scaling dimension of the magnetization density, x_m=0.1294(7), is somewhat larger than in the pure system. Conformal properties of the magnetization and energy density profiles are also examined numerically.

Reaction-diffusion with a time-dependent reaction rate: the single-species diffusion-annihilation process

We study the single-species diffusion-annihilation process with a time-dependent reaction rate, lambda(t)=lambda_0 t^-omega. Scaling arguments show that there is a critical value of the decay exponent omega_c(d) separating a reaction-limited regime for omega > omega_c from a diffusion-limited regime for omega < omega_c. The particle density displays a mean-field, omega-dependent, decay when the process is reaction limited whereas it behaves as for a constant reaction rate when the process is diffusion limited. These results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. They allow us to discuss the scaling behaviour of coupled diffusion-annihilation processes in terms of effective time-dependent reaction rates.

Logarithmic corrections in the two-dimensional Ising model in a random surface field

In the two-dimensional Ising model weak random surface field is predicted to be a marginally irrelevant perturbation at the critical point. We study this question by extensive Monte Carlo simulations for various strength of disorder. The calculated effective (temperature or size dependent) critical exponents fit with the field-theoretical results and can be interpreted in terms of the predicted logarithmic corrections to the pure system's critical behaviour.

Iterated random walk

The iterated random walk is a random process in which a random walker moves on a one-dimensional random walk which is itself taking place on a one-dimensional random walk, and so on. This process is investigated in the continuum limit using the method of moments. When the number of iterations goes to infinity, a time-independent asymptotic density is obtained. It has a simple symmetric exponential form which is stable against the modification of a finite number of iterations. When n is large, the deviation from the stationary density is exponentially small in n. The continuum results are compared to Monte Carlo data for the discrete iterated random walk.

Universal crossing probabilities and incipient spanning clusters in directed percolation

Shape-dependent universal crossing probabilities are studied, via Monte Carlo simulations, for bond and site directed percolation on the square lattice in the diagonal direction, at the percolation threshold. Since the system is strongly anisotropic, the shape-dependence enters through the effective aspect ratio r_eff=cL^z/t, where c is a non-universal constant and z the anisotropy exponent. A particular attention is paid to the influence of the initial state on the universal behaviour of the crossing probability. Using anisotropic finite-size scaling and generalizing a simple argument given by Aizenman for isotropic percolation, we obtain the behaviour of the probability to find n incipient spanning clusters on a finite system at time t. The numerical results are in good agreement with the conjecture.

Scale-invariant universal crossing probability in one-dimensional diffusion-limited coalescence

The crossing probability in the time direction is defined for an off-equilibrium reaction-diffusion system as the probability that the system of size L is still active at time t, in the finite-size scaling limit. Exact results are obtained for the diffusion-limited coalescence problem in 1+1 dimensions with periodic and free boundary conditions using empty interval methods. The crossing probability is a scale-invariant universal function of an effective aspect ratio, L^2/Dt, which is the natural scaling variable for this strongly anisotropic system.
