Universal crossing probability in anisotropic systems

Scale-invariant universal crossing probabilities are studied for critical anisotropic systems in two dimensions. For weakly anisotropic standard percolation in a rectangular-shaped system, Cardy's exact formula is generalized using a length-rescaling procedure. For strongly anisotropic systems in 1+1 dimensions, exact results are obtained for the random walk with absorbing boundary conditions, which can be considered as a linearized mean-field approximation for directed percolation. The bond and site directed percolation problem is itself studied numerically via Monte Carlo simulations on the diagonal square lattice with either free or periodic boundary conditions. A scale-invariant critical crossing probability is still obtained, which is a universal function of the effective aspect ratio r_eff=c r where r=L/t^z, z is the dynamical exponent and c is a non-universal amplitude.

Surface-induced disorder and aperiodic perturbations at first-order transitions

In systems displaying a bulk first-order transition the order parameter may vanish continuously at a free surface, a phenomenon which is called surface-induced disorder. In the presence of surface-induced disorder the correlation lengths, parallel and perpendicular to the surface, diverge at the bulk transition point. In this way the surface induces an anisotropic power-law singular behavior for some bulk quantities. For example in a finite system of transverse linear size L, the response functions diverge as L^{(d-1)z+1}, where d is the dimension of the system and z is the anisotropy exponent. We present a general scaling picture for this anisotropic discontinuity fixed point. Our phenomenological results are confronted with analytical and numerical calculations on the 2D q-state Potts model in the large-q limit. The scaling results are demonstrated to apply also for the same model with a layered, Fibonacci-type modulation of the couplings for which the anisotropy exponent is a continuous function of the strength of the quasiperiodic perturbation.

Multiscaling in Ising quantum chains with random Hilhorst-van Leeuwen perturbations

We consider the influence on the surface critical behaviour of a quantum Ising chain of quenched random surface perturbations decaying as a power of the distance from the surface (random Hilhorst-van Leeuwen models). We study, analytically and numerically, the multiscaling behaviour of the surface magnetization and the surface energy density in the case of marginal perturbations.

Conformal off-diagonal boundary density profiles on a semi-infinite strip

The off-diagonal profile phi(v) associated with a local operator (order parameter or energy density) close to the boundary of a semi-infinite strip with width L is obtained at criticality using conformal methods. It involves the surface exponent x_phi^s and displays a simple universal behaviour which crosses over from surface finite-size scaling when v/L is held constant to corner finite-size scaling when v/L -> 0.

Critical behaviour near multiple junctions and dirty surfaces in the two-dimensional Ising model

We consider m two-dimensional semi-infinite planes of Ising spins joined together through surface spins and study the critical behaviour near to the junction. The m=0 limit of the model - according to the replica trick - corresponds to the semi-infinite Ising model in the presence of a random surface field (RSFI). Using conformal mapping, second-order perturbation expansion around the weakly- and strongly-coupled planes limits and differential renormalization group, we show that the surface critical behaviour of the RSFI model is described by Ising critical exponents with logarithmic corrections to scaling, while at multiple junctions (m>2) the transition is first order. There is a spontaneous junction magnetization at the bulk critical point.

Anisotropic critical phenomena in parabolic geometries: the directed self-avoiding walk

The critical behaviour of directed self-avoiding walks is studied on parabolic-like systems with a free boundary at x=\pm Ct^α. Using a scaling argument, 1/C is shown to be a marginal variable when α=ν_\perp/ν_\parallel=1/2, i.e., on a parabola. As a consequence the directed walk may display varying local exponents. Such a behaviour is indeed observed for restricted walks. This generalizes a result of Cardy showing that nonuniversal behaviour occurs at corners for isotropic systems.

Radial marginal perturbation of two-dimensional systems and conformal invariance

The conformal mapping w=(L/2π)\ln z transforms the critical plane with a radial perturbation αρ^{-y} into a cylinder with width L and a constant deviation α(2π/L)^y from the bulk critical point when the decay exponent y is such that the perturbation is marginal. From the known behavior of the homogeneous off-critical system on the cylinder, one may deduce the correlation functions and defect exponents on the perturbed plane. The results are supported by an exact solution for the Gaussian model.

Conformal invariance and linear defects in the two-dimensional Ising model

Using conformal invariance, we show that the non-universal exponent eta_0 associated with the decay of correlations along a defect line of modified bonds in the square-lattice Ising model is related to the amplitude A_0=xi_n/n of the correlation length ξ_n(K_c) at the bulk critical coupling K_c, on a strip with width n, periodic boundary conditions and two equidistant defect lines along the strip, through A_0=(πη_0)^{-1}.

Critical behaviour in parabolic geometries

We study two-dimensional systems with boundary curves described by power laws. Using conformal mappings we obtain the correlations at the bulk critical point. Three different classes of behaviour are found and explained by scaling arguments which also apply to higher dimensions. For an Ising system of parabolic shape the behaviour of the order at the tip is also found.

Lattice animals on a staircase and Fibonacci numbers

We study the statistics of column-convex lattice animals resulting from the stacking of squares on a single or double staircase. We obtain exact expressions for the number of animals with a given length and area, their mean length and their mean height. These objects are closely related to Fibonacci numbers. On a single staircase, the total number of animals with area k is given by the Fibonacci number F_k.

Conformal Profiles in the Hilhorst--van Leeuwen Model

We study the critical energy and magnetization profiles for the Ising quantum chain with a marginal extended surface perturbation of the form A/y, y being the distance from the surface (Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model). For weak local couplings, A A_c, there is surface order at the bulk critical point. If conformal invariance is assumed to hold with such marginal perturbations, it predicts conformal profiles with the same scaling form as for the unperturbed quantum chain, with marginal surface exponents replacing the unperturbed ones. The results of direct analytical and numerical calculations of the profiles confirm the validity of the conformal expressions in the regimes of second- and first-order surface transitions.

Percolation and Conduction in Restricted Geometries

The finite-size scaling behaviour for percolation and conduction is studied in two-dimensional triangular-shaped random resistor networks at the percolation threshold. The numerical simulations are performed using an efficient star-triangle algorithm. The percolation exponents, linked to the critical behaviour at corners, are in good agreement with the conformal results. The conductivity exponent, t', is found to be independent of the shape of the system. Its value is very close to recent estimates for the surface and bulk conductivity exponents.

Extended surface disorder in the quantum Ising chain

We consider random extended surface perturbations in the transverse field Ising model decaying as a power of the distance from the surface towards a pure bulk system. The decay may be linked either to the evolution of the couplings or to their probabilities. Using scaling arguments, we develop a relevance-irrelevance criterion for such perturbations. We study the probability distribution of the surface magnetization, its average and typical critical behaviour for marginal and relevant perturbations. According to analytical results, the surface magnetization follows a log-normal distribution and both the average and typical critical behaviours are characterized by power-law singularities with continuously varying exponents in the marginal case and essential singularities in the relevant case. For enhanced average local couplings, the transition becomes first order with a nonvanishing critical surface magnetization. This occurs above a positive threshold value of the perturbation amplitude in the marginal case.

Aperiodic Extended Surface Perturbations in the Ising Model

We study the influence of an aperiodic extended surface perturbation on the surface critical behaviour of the two-dimensional Ising model in the extreme anisotropic limit. The perturbation decays as a power of the distance from the free surface with an oscillating amplitude following some aperiodic sequence. The asymptotic density is 1/2 so that the mean ampltitude vanishes. The relevance of the perturbation is discussed by combining scaling arguments of Cordery and Burkhardt for the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model and Luck for aperiodic perturbations. The relevance-irrelevance criterion involves the decay exponent of the perturbation, the wandering exponent which governs the fluctuation of the sequence and the bulk correlation length exponent. Analytical results are obtained for the surface magnetization which displays a rich variety of critical behaviours. The results are checked through a numerical finite-size-scaling study. They show that second-order effects must be taken into account in the discussion of the relevance-irrelevance criterion. The scaling behaviours of the first gap and the surface energy are also discussed.

Anomalous Diffusion in Aperiodic Environments

We study the Brownian motion of a classical particle in one-dimensional inhomogeneous environments where the transition probabilities follow quasiperiodic or aperiodic distributions. Exploiting an exact correspondence with the transverse-field Ising model with inhomogeneous couplings we obtain many new analytical results for the random walk problem. In the absence of global bias the qualitative behavior of the diffusive motion of the particle and the corresponding persistence probability strongly depend on the fluctuation properties of the environment. In environments with bounded fluctuations the particle shows normal diffusive motion and the diffusion constant is simply related to the persistence probability. On the other hand in a medium with unbounded fluctuations the diffusion is ultra-slow, the displacement of the particle grows on logarithmic time scales. For the borderline situation with marginal fluctuations both the diffusion exponent and the persistence exponent are continuously varying functions of the aperiodicity. Extensions of the results to disordered media and to higher dimensions are also discussed.

Relevant Aperiodic Modulation in the 2d Ising Model

We consider the surface critical behaviour of a semi-infinite two-dimensional layered Ising model, where the couplings perpendicular to the surface follow the aperiodic Rudin-Shapiro sequence. The model has unusual critical properties: depending on the strength of the modulation, at the bulk critical point the surface magnetization is either discontinuous or vanishes with an essential singularity. The critical surface magnetization as well as the form of the essential singularity are calculated exactly.

Off-Diagonal Density Profiles and Conformal Invariance

Off-diagonal profiles of local densities (e.g. order parameter or energy density) are calculated at the bulk critical point, by conformal methods, for different types of boundary conditions (free, fixed and mixed). Such profiles, which are defined by a non-vanishing matrix element of the appropriate operator between the ground state and the corresponding lowest excited state of the strip Hamiltonian, enter into the expression of two-point correlation functions on a strip. They are of interest in the finite-size scaling study of bulk and surface critical behaviour since they allow the elimination of regular contributions. The conformal profiles, which are obtained through a conformal transformation of the correlation functions from the half-plane to the strip, are in agreement with the results of a direct calculation, for the energy density of the two-dimensional Ising model.
