Reflection equation as a tool for studying solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation

Given a right-non-degenerate set-theoretic solution $(X,r)$ to the Yang-Baxter equation, we construct a whole family of YBE solutions $r^{(k)}$ on $X$ indexed by its reflections $k$ (i.e., solutions to the reflection equation for $r$). This family includes the original solution and the classical derived solution. All these solutions induce isomorphic actions of the braid group/monoid on $X^n$. The structure monoids of $r$ and $r^{(k)}$ are related by an explicit bijective $1$-cocycle-like map. We thus turn reflections into a tool for studying YBE solutions, rather than a side object of study. In a different direction, we study the reflection equation for non-degenerate involutive YBE solutions, show it to be equivalent to (any of the) three simpler relations, and deduce from the latter systematic ways of constructing new reflections.

Radical and weight of skew braces and their applications to structure groups of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

We define the radical and weight of a skew left brace and provide some basic properties of these notions. In particular, we obtain a Wedderburn type decomposition for Artinian skew left braces. Furthermore, we prove analogues of a theorem of Wiegold, a theorem of Schur and its converse in the context of skew left braces. Finally, we apply these results to detect torsion in the structure group of a finite bijective non-degenerate set-theoretic solution of the Yang-Baxter equation.

Retractability of solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation and $p$-nilpotency of skew braces

Using Bieberbach groups we study multipermutation involutive solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. We use a linear representation of the structure group of an involutive solution to study the unique product property in such groups. An algorithm to find subgroups of a Bieberbach group isomorphic to the Promislow subgroup is introduced and then used in the case of structure group of involutive solutions. To extend the results related to retractability to non-involutive solutions, following the ideas of Meng, Ballester-Bolinches and Romero, we develop the theory of right $p$-nilpotent skew braces. The theory of left $p$-nilpotent skew braces is also developed and used to give a short proof of a theorem of Smoktunowicz in the context of skew braces.

Factorizations of skew braces

We introduce strong left ideals of skew braces and prove that they produce non-trivial decomposition of set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We study factorization of skew left braces through strong left ideals and we prove analogs of Itô's theorem in the context of skew left braces. As a corollary, we obtain applications to the retractability problem of involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Finally, we classify skew braces that contain no non-trivial proper ideals.

PBW deformations of a Fomin-Kirillov algebra and other examples

We begin the study of PBW deformations of graded algebras relevant to the theory of Hopf algebras. One of our examples is the Fomin-Kirillov algebra FK3. Another one appeared in a paper of García Iglesias and Vay. As a consequence of our methods, we determine when the deformations are semisimple and we are able to produce PBW bases and polynomial identities for these deformations.

On structure groups of set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation

This paper explores the structure groups $G_{(X,r)}$ of finite non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ to the Yang-Baxter equation. Namely, we construct a finite quotient $\overline{G}_{(X,r)}$ of $G_{(X,r)}$, generalizing the Coxeter-like groups introduced by Dehornoy for involutive solutions. This yields a finitary setting for testing injectivity: if $X$ injects into $G_{(X,r)}$, then it also injects into $\overline{G}_{(X,r)}$. We shrink every solution to an injective one with the same structure group, and compute the rank of the abelianization of $G_{(X,r)}$. We show that multipermutation solutions are the only involutive solutions with diffuse structure group; that only free abelian structure groups are biorderable; and that for the structure group of a self-distributive solution, the following conditions are equivalent: biorderable, left-orderable, abelian, free abelian, torsion free.

Yang-Baxter operators in symmetric categories

We introduce non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation in the setting of symmetric monoidal categories. Our theory includes non-degenerate set-theoretical solutions as basic examples. However, infinite families of non-degenerate solutions (that are not of set-theoretical type) appear. As in the classical theory of Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev, non-degenerate solutions are classified in terms of invertible 1-cocycles. Braces and matched pairs of cocommutative Hopf algebras (or braiding operators) are also generalized to the context of symmetric monoidal categories and turn out to be equivalent to invertible 1-cocycles.

On skew braces (with an appendix by N. Byott and L. Vendramin)

Braces are generalizations of radical rings, introduced by Rump to study involutive non-degenerate set-theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE). Skew braces were also recently introduced as a tool to study not necessarily involutive solutions. Roughly speaking, skew braces provide group-theoretical and ring-theoretical methods to understand solutions of the YBE. It turns out that skew braces appear in many different contexts, such as near-rings, matched pairs of groups, triply factorized groups, bijective 1-cocycles and Hopf-Galois extensions. These connections and some of their consequences are explored in this paper. We produce several new families of solutions related in many different ways with rings, near-rings and groups. We also study the solutions of the YBE that skew braces naturally produce. We prove, for example, that the order of the canonical solution associated with a finite skew brace is even: it is two times the exponent of the additive group modulo its center.

Homology of left non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation

This paper deals with left non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation (=LND solutions), a vast class of algebraic structures encompassing groups, racks, and cycle sets. To each such solution is associated a shelf (i.e., a self-distributive structure) which captures its major properties. We consider two (co)homology theories for LND solutions, one of which was previously known, in a reduced form, for biracks only. An explicit isomorphism between these theories is described. For groups and racks we recover their classical (co)homology, whereas for cycle sets we get new constructions. For a certain type of LND solutions, including quandles and non-degenerate cycle sets, the (co)homologies split into the degenerate and the normalized parts. We express 2-cocycles of our theories in terms of group cohomology, and, in the case of cycle sets, establish connexions with extensions. This leads to a construction of cycle sets with interesting properties.

Hopf braces and Yang-Baxter operators

This paper introduces Hopf braces, a new algebraic structure related to the Yang-Baxter equation which include Rump's braces and their non-commutative generalizations as particular cases. Several results of classical braces are still valid in our context. Furthermore, Hopf braces provide the right setting for considering left symmetric algebras as Lie-theoretical analogs of braces.

A classification of Nichols algebras of semi-simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over non-abelian groups

Over fields of arbitrary characteristic we classify all braid-indecomposable tuples of at least two absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over non-abelian groups such that the group is generated by the support of the tuple and the Nichols algebra of the tuple is finite-dimensional. Such tuples are classified in terms of analogs of Dynkin diagrams which encode much information about the Yetter-Drinfeld modules. We also compute the dimensions of these finite-dimensional Nichols algebras. Our proof uses the Weyl groupoid of a tuple of simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules.

Cohomology and extensions of braces

Braces and linear cycle sets are algebraic structures playing a major role in the classification of involutive set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. This paper introduces two versions of their (co)homology theories. These theories mix the Harrison (co)homology for the abelian group structure and the (co)homology theory for general cycle sets, developed earlier by the authors. Different classes of brace extensions are completely classified in terms of second cohomology groups.

Skew braces and the Yang-Baxter equation

Braces were introduced by Rump to study non-degenerate involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We generalize Rump's braces to the non-commutative setting and use this new structure to study not necessarily involutive non-degenerate set-theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Based on results of Bachiller and Catino and Rizzo, we develop an algorithm to enumerate and construct classical and non-classical braces of small size up to isomorphism. This algorithm is used to produce a database of braces of small size. The paper contains several open problems, questions and conjectures.

Quandle coloring and cocycle invariants of composite knots and abelian extensions

Quandle colorings and cocycle invariants are studied for composite knots, and applied to chirality and abelian extensions. The square and granny knots, for example, can be distinguished by quandle colorings, so that a trefoil and its mirror can be distinguished by quandle invariants of composite knots. We investigate this and related phenomena. Quandle cocycle invariants are studied in relation to the connected sum, and formulas are given for computing the cocycle invariant from the number of colorings of composite knots. Relations to corresponding abelian extensions of quandles are studied, and extensions are examined for the table of small connected quandles, called Rig quandles. Computer calculations are presented, and summaries of outputs are discussed.

Nichols algebras over groups with finite root system of rank two III

We compute the finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over the sum of two simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules V and W over non-abelian quotients of a certain central extension of the dihedral group of eight elements or SL(2,3), and such that the Weyl groupoid of the pair (V,W) is finite. These central extensions appear in the classification of non-elementary finite-dimensional Nichols algebras with finite Weyl groupoid of rank two. We deduce new information on the structure of primitive elements of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over groups.

The classification of Nichols algebras over groups with finite root system of rank two

We classify all groups G and all pairs (V,W) of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over G such that the support of the direct sum of V and W generates G, the square of the braiding between V and W is not the identity, and the Nichols algebra of the direct sum of V and W admits a finite root system. As a byproduct, we determine the dimensions of such Nichols algebras, and several new families of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras are obtained. Our main tool is the Weyl groupoid of pairs of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over groups.
