The Herschel Multi-Tiered Extragalactic Survey: SPIRE-mm Photometric Redshifts

We investigate the potential of submm-mm and submm-mm-radio photometric redshifts using a sample of mm-selected sources as seen at 250, 350 and 500 μm by the SPIRE instrument on Herschel. From a sample of 63 previously identified mm-sources with reliable radio identifications in the GOODS-N and Lockman Hole North fields 46 (73 per cent) are found to have detections in at least one SPIRE band. We explore the observed submm/mm colour evolution with redshift, finding that the colours of mm-sources are adequately described by a modified blackbody with constant optical depth τ = (ν/ν0)^β where β = +1.8 and ν0 = c/100 μm. We find a tight correlation between dust temperature and IR luminosity. Using a single model of the dust temperature and IR luminosity relation we derive photometric redshift estimates for the 46 SPIRE detected mm-sources. Testing against the 22 sources with known spectroscopic, or good quality optical/near-IR photometric, redshifts we find submm/mm photometric redshifts offer a redshift accuracy of |z|/(1+z) = 0.16 (< |z| >= 0.51). Including constraints from the radio-far IR correlation the accuracy is improved to |z|/(1 + z) = 0.15 (< |z| >= 0.45). We estimate the redshift distribution of mm-selected sources finding a significant excess at z > 3 when compared to ~ 850 μm selected samples.

The Pan-Pacific Planet Search. I. A Giant Planet Orbiting 7 CMa

We introduce the Pan-Pacific Planet Search, a survey of 170 metal-rich Southern hemisphere subgiants using the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope. We report the first discovery from this program, a giant planet orbiting 7 CMa (HD 47205) with a period of 763+/-17 days, eccentricity e=0.14+/-0.06, and m sin i=2.6+/-0.6 M_jup. The host star is a K giant with a mass of 1.5+/-0.3 M_sun and metallicity [Fe/H]=0.21+/-0.10. The mass and period of 7 CMa b are typical of planets which have been found to orbit intermediate-mass stars (M*>1.3 M_sun). Hipparcos photometry shows this star to be stable to 0.0004 mag on the radial-velocity period, giving confidence that this signal can be attributed to reflex motion caused by an orbiting planet.

Energy spectra of three electrons in Si/SiGe single and vertically coupled double quantum dots

We study three-electron energy spectra in Si/SiGe single and vertically coupled double quantum dots where all the relevant effects, such as, the Zeeman splitting, spin-orbit coupling, valley coupling and electron-electron Coulomb interaction are explicitly included. In the absence of magnetic field, our results in single quantum dots agree well with the experiment by Borselli {\em et al.} [Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 98}, 123118 (2011)]. We identify the spin and valley configurations of the ground state in the experimental cases and give a complete phase-diagram-like picture of the ground state configuration with respect to the dot size and valley splitting. We also explicitly investigate the three-electron energy spectra of the pure and mixed valley configurations with magnetic fields in both Faraday and Voigt configurations. We find that the ground state can be switched between doublet and quartet by tuning the magnetic field and/or dot size. The three-electron energy spectra present many anticrossing points between different spin states due to the spin-orbit coupling, which are expected to benefit the spin manipulation. We show that the negligibly small intervalley Coulomb interaction can result in magnetic-field independent quartet-doublet degeneracy in the three-electron energy spectrum of the mixed valley configuration. Furthermore, we study the barrier-width and barrier-height dependences in vertically coupled double quantum dots with both pure and mixed valley configurations. Similar to the single quantum dot case, anticrossing behavior and quartet-doublet degeneracy are observed.

HerMES: point source catalogues from deep Herschel-SPIRE observations

We describe the generation of single-band point source catalogues from submillimetre Herschel-SPIRE observations taken as part of the Science Demonstration Phase of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). Flux densities are found by means of peak-finding and the fitting of a Gaussian point-response function. With highly-confused images, careful checks must be made on the completeness and flux density accuracy of the detected sources. This is done by injecting artificial sources into the images and analysing the resulting catalogues. Measured flux densities at which 50 per cent of injected sources result in good detections at (250, 350, 500) μm range from (11.6, 13.2, 13.1) mJy to (25.7, 27.1, 35.8) mJy, depending on the depth of the observation (where a `good' detection is taken to be one with positional offset less than one full-width half-maximum of the point-response function, and with the measured flux density within a factor of 2 of the flux density of the injected source). This paper acts as a reference for the 2010 July HerMES public data release.

Constraining the Properties of SNe~Ia Progenitors from Light Curves

We present an analysis of high precision V light curves (LC) for 18 local Type Ia Supernovae, SNe Ia, as obtained with the same telescope and setup at the Las Campanas Observatory (LCO). This homogeneity provides an intrinsic accuracy a few hundreds of a magnitude both with respect to individual LCs and between different objects. Based on the Single Degenerate Scenario, SD, we identify patterns which have been predicted by model calculations as signatures of the progenitor and accretion rate which change the explosion energy and the amount of electron capture, respectively. Using these templates as principle components and the overdetermined system of SN pairs, we reconstruct the properties of progenitors and progenitor systems. All LCO SNe Ia follow the brightness decline relation but 2001ay. After subtraction of the two components, the remaining scatter is reduced to 0.01-0.03m. Type SNe Ia seem to originate from progenitors with Main Sequence masses of 3Mo with the exception of two subluminous SNe Ia with < 2Mo. The component analysis indicates a wide range of accretion rates in the progenitor systems closing the gap to accretion induced collapses (AIC). SN1991t-like objects show differences in $dm15$ but no tracers of our secondary parameters. This may point to a different origin such as DD-Scenario or the Pulsating Delayed Detonations. SN2001ay does not follow the decline relation. It can be understood in the framework of C-rich WDs, and this group may produce an anti-Phillips relation. We suggest that this may be a result of a common envelope phase and mixing during central He burning as in SN1987A.

Herschel/HerMES: The X-ray - Infrared correlation for star-forming galaxies at z~1

For the first time, we investigate the X-ray/infrared (IR) correlation for star-forming galaxies at z~1, using SPIRE submm data from the recently-launched Herschel Space Observatory and deep X-ray data from the 2Ms Chandra deep field north (CDFN) survey. We examine the X-ray/IR correlation in the soft X-ray (SX, 0.5-2 keV) and hard X-ray (HX, 2-10 keV) bands by comparing our z~1 SPIRE-detected star-forming galaxies (SFGs) to equivalently IR-luminous (L_IR >10^10 L_sun) samples in the local/low redshift Universe. Our results suggest that the X-ray/IR properties of the SPIRE SFGs are on average similar to those of their local counterparts, as we find no evidence for evolution in the L_SX/L_IR and L_HX/L_IR ratios with redshift. We note however, that at all redshifts, both L_SX/L_IR and L_HX/L_IR are strongly dependent on IR luminosity, with luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs,L_IR >10^11 L_sun) having up to an order of magnitude lower values than normal infrared galaxies (L_IR <10^11 L_sun). We derive a L_SX-L_IR relation and confirm the applicability of an existing L_HX-L_IR relation for both local and distant LIRGs and ULIRGs, consistent with a scenario where X-ray luminosity is correlated with the star-formation rate (SFR).

X-ray illumination of the ejecta of Supernova 1987A

We present the late-time optical light curve of the ejecta of SN 1987A measured from HST imaging observations spanning the past 17 years. We find that the flux from the ejecta declined up to around year 2001, powered by the radioactive decay of 44Ti. Then the flux started to increase, more than doubling by the end of 2009. We show that the increase is the result of energy deposited by X-rays produced in the interaction with the circumstellar medium. We suggest that the change of the dominant energy input to the ejecta, from internal to external, marks the transition from supernova to supernova remnant. The details of the observations and the modelling are described in the accompanying supplementary information.

Use of coated silicon field emitters as neutralisers for fundamental physics missions in space

Spacecraft neutralisers are required as part of the ion propulsion system for accurate station keeping in fundamental physics missions. This paper describes the use of thin layers of insulating materials as coatings for the gated silicon field emitter array structure used in a spacecraft neutraliser. These thin coatings are postulated to reduce power consumption and reduce overheating. The power consumption and lifetime of aluminium nitride and amorphous hydrogenated diamond-like carbon coatings have been tested by current-voltage and endurance tests. Diamond-like carbon coatings were promising, performing better in endurance tests than uncoated samples, but further work is required to characterise the coating's physical properties and its effects on field emission. The thermal conductivity of the coating material had little effect on measured sample lifetimes. Aluminium nitride had reduced power consumption compared to diamond-like carbon coated and uncoated samples. A thin (~5 nm) layer of aluminium nitride was found to be optimal, meeting European Space Agency specifications for the neutraliser engineering model.

The Hubble Space Telescope Cluster Supernova Survey: V. Improving the Dark Energy Constraints Above z>1 and Building an Early-Type-Hosted Supernova Sample

We present ACS, NICMOS, and Keck AO-assisted photometry of 20 Type Ia supernovae SNe Ia from the HST Cluster Supernova Survey. The SNe Ia were discovered over the redshift interval 0.623 < z < 1.415. Fourteen of these SNe Ia pass our strict selection cuts and are used in combination with the world's sample of SNe Ia to derive the best current constraints on dark energy. Ten of our new SNe Ia are beyond redshift $z=1$, thereby nearly doubling the statistical weight of HST-discovered SNe Ia beyond this redshift. Our detailed analysis corrects for the recently identified correlation between SN Ia luminosity and host galaxy mass and corrects the NICMOS zeropoint at the count rates appropriate for very distant SNe Ia. Adding these supernovae improves the best combined constraint on the dark energy density ρ_{DE}(z) at redshifts 1.0 < z < 1.6 by 18% (including systematic errors). For a LambdaCDM universe, we find Ω_Λ= 0.724 +0.015/-0.016 (68% CL including systematic errors). For a flat wCDM model, we measure a constant dark energy equation-of-state parameter w = -0.985 +0.071/-0.077 (68% CL). Curvature is constrained to ~0.7% in the owCDM model and to ~2% in a model in which dark energy is allowed to vary with parameters w_0 and w_a. Tightening further the constraints on the time evolution of dark energy will require several improvements, including high-quality multi-passband photometry of a sample of several dozen z>1 SNe Ia. We describe how such a sample could be efficiently obtained by targeting cluster fields with WFC3 on HST.

Giant enhancement of spin accumulation and long-distance spin precession in metallic lateral spin valves

The nonlocal spin injection in lateral spin valves is highly expected to be an effective method to generate a pure spin current for potential spintronic application. However, the spin valve voltage, which decides the magnitude of the spin current flowing into an additional ferromagnetic wire, is typically of the order of 1 μV. Here we show that lateral spin valves with low resistive NiFe/MgO/Ag junctions enable the efficient spin injection with high applied current density, which leads to the spin valve voltage increased hundredfold. Hanle effect measurements demonstrate a long-distance collective 2-pi spin precession along a 6 μm long Ag wire. These results suggest a route to faster and manipulable spin transport for the development of pure spin current based memory, logic and sensing devices.

HerMES: Lyman Break Galaxies individually detected at 0.7 < z < 2.0 in GOODS-N with Herschel/SPIRE

As part of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey we have investigated the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) properties of a sample of more than 4800 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North field. Most LBGs are not detected individually, but we do detect a sub-sample of 12 objects at 0.7 < z < 1.6 and one object at z ~ 2.0. The ones detected by Herschel SPIRE have redder observed NUV-U and U-R colors than the others, while the undetected ones have colors consistent with average LBGs at z > 2.5. The UV-to-FIR spectral energy distributions of the objects detected in the rest-frame FIR are investigated using the code CIGALE to estimate physical parameters. We find that LBGs detected by SPIRE are high mass, luminous infrared galaxies. It appears that LBGs are located in a triangle-shaped region in the A_FUV vs. Log L_FUV diagram limited by A_FUV=0 at the bottom and by a diagonal following the temporal evolution of the most massive galaxies from the bottom-right to the top-left of the diagram. This upper envelop can be used as upper limits for the UV dust attenuation as a function of L_FUV}. The limits of this region are well explained using a closed-box model, where the chemical evolution of galaxies produces metals, which in turn lead to higher dust attenuation when the galaxies age.

Optical detection of spin transport in non-magnetic metals

We determine the dynamic magnetization induced in non-magnetic metal wedges composed of silver, copper and platinum by means of Brillouin light scattering (BLS) microscopy. The magnetization is transferred from a ferromagnetic Ni80Fe20 layer to the metal wedge via the spin pumping effect. The spin pumping efficiency can be controlled by adding an insulating but transparent interlayer between the magnetic and non-magnetic layer. By comparing the experimental results to a dynamical macroscopic spin-transport model we determine the transverse relaxation time of the pumped spin current which is much smaller than the longitudinal relaxation time.

Singlet-triplet relaxation in SiGe/Si/SiGe double quantum dots

We study the singlet-triplet relaxation due to the spin-orbit coupling assisted by the electron-phonon scattering in two-electron SiGe/Si/SiGe double quantum dots in the presence of an external magnetic field in either Faraday or Voigt configuration. By explicitly including the electron-electron Coulomb interaction and the valley splitting induced by the interface scattering, we employ the exact-diagonalization method to obtain the energy spectra and the eigenstates. Then we calculate the relaxation rates with the Fermi golden rule. We find that the transition rates can be effectively tuned by varying the external magnetic field and the interdot distance. Especially in the vicinity of the anticrossing point, the transition rates show intriguing features. We also investigate the electric-field dependence of the transition rates, and find that the transition rates are almost independent of the electric field. This is of great importance in the spin manipulation since the lifetime remains almost the same during the change of the qubit configuration from $(1,1)$ to $(2,0)$ by the electric field.

Redshift Determination and CO Line Excitation Modeling for the Multiply-Lensed Galaxy HLSW-01

We report on the redshift measurement and CO line excitation of HERMES J105751.1+573027 (HLSW-01), a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy discovered in Herschel/SPIRE observations as part of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). HLSW-01 is an ultra-luminous galaxy with an intrinsic far-infrared luminosity of 1.4x10^(13) solar luminosities, and is lensed by a massive group of galaxies into at least four images with a total magnification of 10.9+/-0.7. With the 100 GHz instantaneous bandwidth of the Z-Spec instrument on the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, we robustly identify a redshift of z=2.958+/-0.007 for this source, using the simultaneous detection of four CO emission lines (J = 7-6, J = 8-7, J = 9-8, and J = 10-9). Combining the measured line fluxes for these high-J transitions with the J = 1-0, J = 3-2 and J = 5-4 line fluxes measured with the Green Bank Telescope, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy, and the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, respectively, we model the physical properties of the molecular gas in this galaxy. We find that the full CO spectral line energy distribution is well described by warm, moderate-density gas with Tkin = 86-235 K and n(H2) = (1.1-3.5)x10^3 cm^(-3). However, it is possible that the highest-J transitions are tracing a small fraction of very dense gas in molecular cloud cores, and two-component models that include a warm/dense molecular gas phase with Tkin ~ 200 K, n(H2) ~ 10^5 cm^(-3) are also consistent with these data. Higher signal-to-noise measurements of the J(upper) > 7 transitions with high spectral resolution, combined with high spatial resolution CO maps, are needed to improve our understanding of the gas excitation, morphology, and dynamics of this interesting high-redshift galaxy.

Modeling of the HERMES J105751.1+573027 submillimeter source lensed by a dark matter dominated foreground group of galaxies

We present the results of a gravitational lensing analysis of the bright $\zs=2.957$ sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG), HERMES J105751.1+573027 found in {\it Herschel}/SPIRE Science Demonstration Phase data from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) project. The high resolution imaging available in optical and Near-IR channels, along with CO emission obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, allow us to precisely estimate the intrinsic source extension and hence estimate the total lensing magnification to be $μ=10.9\pm 0.7$. We measure the half-light radius $R_{\rm eff}$ of the source in the rest-frame Near-UV and $V$ bands that characterize the unobscured light coming from stars and find $R_{\rm eff,*}= [2.0 \pm 0.1]$ kpc, in good agreement with recent studies on the Submillimeter Galaxy population. This lens model is also used to estimate the size of the gas distribution ($R_{\rm eff, gas}= [1.1\pm0.5]$) kpc by mapping back in the source plane the CO (J=5-4) transition line emission. The lens modeling yields a relatively large Einstein radius $R_{\rm Ein}= 4\farcs10 \pm 0\farcs02$, corresponding to a deflector velocity dispersion of [$483\pm 16] \,\kms$. This shows that HERMES J105751.1+573027 is lensed by a {\it galaxy group-size} dark matter halo at redshift $\zl\sim 0.6$. The projected dark matter contribution largely dominates the mass budget within the Einstein radius with $f_{\rm dm}(<R_{\rm Ein})\sim 80%$. This fraction reduces to $f_{\rm dm}(<R_{\rm eff,G1}\simeq 4.5\kpc)\sim 47%$ within the effective radius of the main deflecting galaxy of stellar mass $M_{\rm *,G1}=[8.5\pm 1.6] \times 10^{11}\msun$. At this smaller scale the dark matter fraction is consistent with results already found for massive lensing ellipticals at $z\sim0.2$ from the SLACS survey.

Discovery of a Multiply-Lensed Submillimeter Galaxy in Early HerMES Herschel/SPIRE Data

We report the discovery of a bright ($f(250\mum) > 400$ mJy), multiply-lensed submillimeter galaxy \obj\ in {\it Herschel}/SPIRE Science Demonstration Phase data from the HerMES project. Interferometric 880\mum\ Submillimeter Array observations resolve at least four images with a large separation of $\sim 9\arcsec$. A high-resolution adaptive optics $K_p$ image with Keck/NIRC2 clearly shows strong lensing arcs. Follow-up spectroscopy gives a redshift of $z=2.9575$, and the lensing model gives a total magnification of $μ\sim 11 \pm 1$. The large image separation allows us to study the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) of the lensed source unobscured by the central lensing mass. The far-IR/millimeter-wave SED is well described by a modified blackbody fit with an unusually warm dust temperature, $88 \pm 3$ K. We derive a lensing-corrected total IR luminosity of $(1.43 \pm 0.09) \times 10^{13}\, \mathrm{L}_{\odot}$, implying a star formation rate of $\sim 2500\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. However, models primarily developed from brighter galaxies selected at longer wavelengths are a poor fit to the full optical-to-millimeter SED. A number of other strongly lensed systems have already been discovered in early {\it Herschel} data, and many more are expected as additional data are collected.

Dynamical Structure of the Molecular Interstellar Medium in an Extremely Bright, Multiply Lensed z~3 Submillimeter Galaxy Discovered with Herschel

We report the detection of CO 5-4, 3-2, and 1-0 emission in the strongly lensed, Herschel/SPIRE-selected submillimeter galaxy (SMG) HLSW-01 at z=2.9574+/-0.0001, using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, and the Green Bank Telescope. The observations spatially resolve the molecular gas into four lensed images with a maximum separation of ~9", and reveal the internal gas dynamics in this system. We derive lensing-corrected CO line luminosities of L'(CO 1-0) = (4.17+/-0.41), L'(CO 3-2) = (3.96+/-0.20) and L'(CO 5-4) = (3.45+/-0.20) x 10^10 (mu_L/10.9)^-1 Kkm/s pc^2, corresponding to luminosity ratios of r_31 = 0.95+/-0.10, r_53 = 0.87+/-0.06, and r_51 = 0.83+/-0.09. This suggests a total molecular gas mass of Mgas = 3.3 x 10^10 (alpha_CO/0.8) (mu_L/10.9)^-1 Msun. The gas mass, gas mass fraction, gas depletion timescale, star formation efficiency, and specific star formation rate are typical for an SMG. The velocity structure of the gas reservoir suggests that the brightest two lensed images are dynamically resolved projections of the same dust-obscured region in the galaxy that are kinematically offset from the unresolved fainter images. The resolved kinematics appear consistent with the complex velocity structure observed in major, `wet' (i.e., gas-rich) mergers. Major mergers are commonly observed in SMGs, and are likely to be responsible for fueling their intense starbursts at high gas consumption rates. This study demonstrates the level of detail to which galaxies in the early universe can be studied by utilizing the increase in effective spatial resolution and sensitivity provided by gravitational lensing.
