Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped interacting spin-1 atoms

We investigate Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped spin-1 atoms with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic two-body contact interactions. We adopt the mean field theory and develop a Hartree-Fock-Popov type approximation in terms of a semiclassical two-fluid model. For antiferromagnetic interactions, our study reveals double condensations as atoms in the $|m_F=0>$ state never seem to condense under the constraints of both the conservation of total atom number $N$ and magnetization $M$. For ferromagnetic interactions, however, triple condensations can occur. Our results can be conveniently understood in terms of the interplay of three factors: (anti) ferromagnetic atom-atom interactions, $M$ conservation, and the miscibilities between and among different condensed components.

Quantum phases of dipolar spinor condensates

We study the zero-temperature ground state structure of a spin-1 condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that the dipolar interactions break the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and induce new quantum phases. Different phases can be reached by tuning the effective strength of the dipolar interactions via modifying the trapping geometry. The experimental feasibility of detecting these phases is investigated. The spin-mixing dynamics is also studied.

Calibrating dipolar interaction in an atomic condensate

We revisit the topic of a dipolar condensate with the recently derived more rigorous pseudo-potential for dipole-dipole interaction [A. Derevianko, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 67}, 033607 (2003)]. Based on the highly successful variational technique, we find that all dipolar effects estimated before (using the bare dipole-dipole interaction) become significantly larger, i.e. are amplified by the new velocity-dependent pseudo-potential, especially in the limit of large or small trap aspect ratios. This result points to a promising prospect for detecting dipolar effects inside an atomic condensate.

Nonadiabatic effects of atomic motion inside a high Q optical cavity

We revisit the topic of atomic center of mass motion of a three level atom Raman coupled strongly to an external laser field and the quantum field of a high Q optical cavity. We focus on the motion related nonadiabatic effects of the atomic internal dynamics and provide a quantitative answer to the validity regime for the application of the motional insensitive dark state as recently suggested in Ref. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 67}, 032305 (2003)].

Observation of spinor dynamics in optically trapped 87Rb Bose-Einstein Condensates

We measure spin mixing of F=1 and F=2 spinor condensates of 87Rb atoms confined in an optical trap. We determine the spin mixing time to be typically less than 600 ms and observe spin population oscillations. The equilibrium spin configuration in the F=1 manifold is measured for different magnetic fields and found to show ferromagnetic behavior for low field gradients. An F=2 condensate is created by microwave excitation from F=1 manifold, and this spin-2 condensate is observed to decay exponentially with time constant 250 ms. Despite the short lifetime in the F=2 manifold, spin mixing of the condensate is observed within 50 ms.

Quantum Zeno subspace and entangled Bose-Einstein condensates

We discuss a proposal for the efficient generation of the maximally entangled atomic N-GHZ state in a spinor-1 condensate by driving internal state atomic Raman transitions using (classical) laser fields. We illustrate the dynamics in terms of a quantum Zeno subspace, and identify the resultant atomic elastic collision in facilitating the deterministic entanglement creation. Our proposal can be readily implemented in several laboratories where ferromagnetic spinor condensates (of $^{87}$Rb atoms) are investigated.

Model study on the photoassociation of a pair of trapped atoms into an ultralong-range molecule

Using the method of quantum-defect theory, we calculate the ultralong-range molecular vibrational states near the dissociation threshold of a diatomic molecular potential which asymptotically varies as $-1/R^3$. The properties of these states are of considerable interest as they can be formed by photoassociation (PA) of two ground state atoms. The Franck-Condon overlap integrals between the harmonically trapped atom-pair states and the ultralong-range molecular vibrational states are estimated and compared with their values for a pair of untrapped free atoms in the low-energy scattering state. We find that the binding between a pair of ground-state atoms by a harmonic trap has significant effect on the Franck-Condon integrals and thus can be used to influence PA. Trap-induced binding between two ground-state atoms may facilitate coherent PA dynamics between the two atoms and the photoassociated diatomic molecule.

Atom-photon entanglement generation and distribution

We extend an earlier model by Law {\it et al.} \cite{law} for a cavity QED based single-photon-gun to atom-photon entanglement generation and distribution. We illuminate the importance of a small critical atom number on the fidelity of the proposed operation in the strong coupling limit. Our result points to a promisingly high purity and efficiency using currently available cavity QED parameters, and sheds new light on constructing quantum computing and communication devices with trapped atoms and high Q optical cavities.

A criterion for testing multi-particle NPT entanglement

We revisit the criterion of multi-particle entanglement based on the overlaps of a given quantum state $ρ$ with maximally entangled states. For a system of $m$ particles, each with $N$ distinct states, we prove that $ρ$ is $m$-particle negative partial transpose (NPT) entangled, if there exists a maximally entangled state $|{\rm MES}>$, such that $<{\rm MES}|ρ|{\rm MES}>>{1}/{N}$. While this sufficiency condition is weaker than the Peres-Horodecki criterion in all cases, it applies to multi-particle systems, and becomes especially useful when the number of particles ($m$) is large. We also consider the converse of this criterion and illustrate its invalidity with counter examples.

The dynamics of quantum phases in a spinor condensate

We discuss the quantum phases and their diffusion dynamics in a spinor-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. For ferromagnetic interactions, we obtain the exact ground state distribution of the phases associated with the total atom number ($N$), the total magnetization (${\cal M}$), and the alignment (or hypercharge) ($Y$) of the system. The mean field ground state is stable against fluctuations of atom numbers in each of the spin components, and the phases associated with the order parameter for each spin components diffuse while dynamically recover the two broken continuous symmetries [U(1) and SO(2)] when $N$ and ${\cal M}$ are conserved as in current experiments. We discuss the implications to the quantum dynamics due to an external (homogeneous) magnetic field. We also comment on the case of a spinor-1 condensate with anti-ferromagnetic interactions.

Quantum phase diffusions of a spinor condensate

We discuss the quantum phases and their diffusion in a spinor-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. For ferromagnetic interactions, we obtain the exact ground state distribution of the phase fluctuations corresponding to the total atom number ($N$), the magnetization (${\cal M}$), and the alignment (or hypercharge) ($Y$) of the system. The mean field ground state is shown to be stable against these fluctuations, which dynamically recover the two continuous symmetries associated with the conservation of $N$ and ${\cal M}$ as in current experiments.

Entanglement and spin squeezing of Bose condensed atoms

We propose a direct, coherent coupling scheme that can create massively entangled states of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms. Our idea is based on an effective interaction between two atoms from coherent Raman processes through a (two atom) molecular intermediate state. We compare our scheme with other recent proposals for generation of massive entanglement of Bose condensed atoms. We also present explicit calculations that support detecting maximally entangled states without requiring single atom resolved measurements.

Expansion of a dipolar condensate

We discuss the expansion of an initially trapped dipolar condensate. When the nominal isotropic s-wave interaction strength becomes tunable through a Feshbach resonance, anisotropic dipolar effects are shown to be detectable under current experimental conditions [E. A conditional quantum phase gate between two 3-state atoms

We propose a scheme for conditional quantum logic between two 3-state atoms that share a quantum data-bus such as a single mode optical field in cavity QED systems, or a collective vibrational state of trapped ions. Making use of quantum interference, our scheme achieves successful conditional phase evolution without any real transitions of atomic internal states or populating the quantum data-bus. In addition, it only requires common addressing of the two atoms by external laser fields.

Quantum logic between atoms inside a high Q optical cavity

We propose a protocol for conditional quantum logic between two 4-state atoms inside a high Q optical cavity. The process detailed in this paper utilizes a direct 4-photon 2-atom resonant process and has the added advantage of commonly addressing the two atoms when they are inside the high Q optical cavity.

On the single mode approximation in spinor-1 atomic condensate

We investigate the validity conditions of the single mode approximation (SMA) in spinor-1 atomic condensate when effects due to residual magnetic fields are negligible. For atomic interactions of the ferromagnetic type, the SMA is shown to be exact, with a mode function different from what is commonly used. However, the quantitative deviation is small under current experimental conditions (for $^{87}$Rb atoms). For anti-ferromagnetic interactions, we find that the SMA becomes invalid in general. The differences among the mean field mode functions for the three spin components are shown to depend strongly on the system magnetization. Our results can be important for studies of beyond mean field quantum correlations, such as fragmentation, spin squeezing, and multi-partite entanglement.

We discuss the low energy shape oscillations of a magnetic trapped atomic condensate including the spin dipole interaction. When the nominal isotropic s-wave interaction strength becomes tunable through a Feshbach resonance (e.g. as for $^{85}$Rb atoms), anisotropic dipolar effects are shown to be detectable under current experimental conditions [E. A. Donley {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 412}, 295 (2001)].

Decoherence of collective atomic spin states due to inhomogeneous coupling

We investigate the decoherence of a superposition of symmetric collective internal states of an atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous coupling to external control fields. For asymptotically large system, we find the characteristic decoherence rate scales as $\sqrt{N}$ with $N$ being the total number of atoms. Our results shed new light on attempts for quantum information processing and storage with atomic ensembles.
