Geometric phase of an atom in a magnetic storage ring

A magnetically trapped atom experiences an adiabatic geometric (Berry's) phase due to changing field direction. We investigate theoretically such an Aharonov-Bohm-like geometric phase for atoms adiabatically moving inside a storage ring as demonstrated in several recent experiments. Our result shows that this phase shift is easily observable in a closed loop interference experiment, and thus the shift has to be accounted for in the proposed inertial sensing applications. The spread in phase shift due to the atom transverse distribution is quantified through numerical simulations.

The angular momentum of a magnetically trapped atomic condensate

For an atomic condensate in an axially symmetric magnetic trap, the sum of the axial components of the orbital angular momentum and the hyperfine spin is conserved. Inside an Ioffe-Pritchard trap (IPT) whose magnetic field (B-field) is not axially symmetric, the difference of the two becomes surprisingly conserved. In this paper we investigate the relationship between the values of the sum/difference angular momentums for an atomic condensate inside a magnetic trap and the associated gauge potential induced by the adiabatic approximation. Our result provides significant new insight into the vorticity of magnetically trapped atomic quantum gases.

Entanglement between two fermionic atoms inside a cylindrical harmonic trap

We investigate quantum entanglement between two (spin-1/2) fermions inside a cylindrical harmonic trap, making use of the von Neumann entropy for the reduced single particle density matrix as the pure state entanglement measure. We explore the dependence of pair entanglement on the geometry and strength of the trap and on the strength of the pairing interaction over the complete range of the effective BCS to BEC crossover. Our result elucidates an interesting connection between our model system of two fermions and that of two interacting bosons.

Characterizing the complete hierarchy of correlations in an $n$-party system

A characterization of the complete correlation structure in an $n$-party system is proposed in terms of a series of $(k,n)$ threshold classical secret sharing protocols ($2\le k\le n$). The total correlation is shown to be the sum of independent correlations of 2-, 3-,$...$, $n$-parties. Our result unifies several earlier scattered works, and shines new light at the important topic of multi-party quantum entanglement. As an application, we explicitly construct the hierarchy of correlations in an $n$-qubit graph state.

Solitons in a trapped spin-1 atomic condensate

We numerically investigate a particular type of spin solitons inside a trapped atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with ferromagnetic interactions. Within the mean field theory approximation, our study of the solitonic dynamics shows that the solitonic wave function, its center of mass motion, and the local spin evolutions are stable and are intimately related to the domain structures studied recently in spin-1 $^{87}$Rb condensates. We discuss a rotating reference frame wherein the dynamics of the solitonic local spatial spin distribution become time independent.

Dipolar effect in coherent spin mixing of two atoms in a single optical lattice site

We show that atomic dipolar effects are detectable in the system that recently demonstrated two-atom coherent spin dynamics within individual lattice sites of a Mott state. Based on a two-state approximation for the two-atom internal states and relying on a variational approach, we have estimated the spin dipolar effect. Despite the absolute weakness of the dipole-dipole interaction, it is shown that it leads to experimentally observable effects in the spin mixing dynamics.

A multi-party correlation measure based on cumulant

We propose a genuine multi-party correlation measure for a multi-party quantum system as the trace norm of the cumulant of the state. The legitimacy of our multi-party correlation measure is explicitly demonstrated by proving it satisfies the five basic conditions required for a correlation measure. As an application we construct an efficient algorithm for the calculation of our measures for all stabilizer states.

Quantum information cannot be split into complementary parts

We prove a new impossibility for quantum information (the no-splitting theorem): an unknown quantum bit (qubit) cannot be split into two complementary qubits. This impossibility, together with the no-cloning theorem, demonstrates that an unknown qubit state is a single entity, which cannot be cloned or split. This sheds new light on quantum computation and quantum information.

Nonadiabatic production of spinor condensates with a QUIC trap

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of multi-component spinor condensates via a time-dependent quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap (QUIC trap), we provide a general framework for the investigation of nonadiabatic Landau-Zener dynamics of a hyperfine spin, e.g., from an atomic magnetic dipole moment coupled to a weak time-dependent magnetic (B-) field. The spin flipped population distribution, or the so-called Majorona formula is expressed in terms of system parameters and experimental observables; thus, provides much needed insight into the underlying mechanism for the production of spinor condensates due to nonadiabatic level crossings.

N-qubit entanglement via the $J_y^2$-type collective interaction

We investigate quantum correlations of the $N$-qubit states via a collective pseudo-spin interaction ($\propto J_y^2$) on arbitrary pure separable states for a given interval of time. Based on this dynamical generation of the $N$-qubit maximal entangled states, a quantum secret sharing protocol with $N$ continuous classical secrets is developed.

Effective size of a trapped atomic Bose gas

We investigate the temperature-dependent effective size of a trapped interacting atomic Bose gas within a mean field theory approximation. The sudden shrinking of the average length, as observed in an earlier experiment by Wang {\it et al.} [Chin. Phys. Lett. {\bf 20}, 799 (2003)], is shown to be a good indication for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Our study also supports the use of the average width of a trapped Bose gas for a nondestructive calibration of its temperature.

Dynamical instability and domain formation in a spin-1 Bose condensate

We interpret the recently observed spatial domain formation in spin-1 atomic condensates as a result of dynamical instability. Within the mean field theory, a homogeneous condensate is dynamically unstable (stable) for ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) atomic interactions. We find this dynamical instability naturally leads to spontaneous domain formation as observed in several recent experiments for condensates with rather small numbers of atoms. For trapped condensates, our numerical simulations compare quantitatively to the experimental results, thus largely confirming the physical insight from our analysis of the homogeneous case.

Measuring the parity of an $N$-qubit state

We present a scheme for a projective measurement of the parity operator $P_z=\prod_{i=1}^N σ_z^{(i)}$ of $N$-qubits. Our protocol uses a single ancillary qubit, or a probe qubit, and involves manipulations of the total spin of the $N$ qubits without requiring individual addressing. We illustrate our protocol in terms of an experimental implementation with atomic ions in a two-zone linear Paul trap, and further discuss its extensions to several more general cases.

Coherent spin mixing dynamics in a spin-1 atomic condensate

We study the coherent off-equilibrium spin mixing inside an atomic condensate. Using mean field theory and adopting the single spatial mode approximation (SMA), the condensate spin dynamics is found to be well described by that of a nonrigid pendulum, and displays a variety of periodic oscillations in an external magnetic field. Our results illuminate several recent experimental observations and provide critical insights into the observation of coherent interaction-driven oscillations in a spin-1 condensate.

An effective quasi-one-dimensional description of a spin-1 atomic condensate

Within the mean field theory we extend the effective quasi-1D non-polynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) approach to the description of a spin-1 atomic condensate in a tight radial confinement geometry for both weak and strong atom-atom interactions. Detailed comparisons with full time dependent 3D numerical simulations show excellent agreement as in the case of a single component scalar condensate, demonstrating our result as an efficient and effective tool for the understanding of spin-1 condensate dynamics observed in several recent experiments.

Tunnelling of condensate magnetization in a double-well potential

We study quantum dynamical properties of a spin-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. Adopting a mean field theory and single spatial mode approximation, we characterize our model system as two coupled spins. For certain initial states, we find full magnetization oscillations between wells not accompanied by mass (or atom numbers) exchange. We identify dynamic regimes of collective spin variables arising from nonlinear self-interactions that are different from the usual Josephson oscillations. We also discuss magnetization beats and incomplete oscillations of collective spin variables other than the magnetization. Our study points to an alternative approach to observe coherent tunnelling of a condensate through a (spatial) potential barrier.

Entanglement and spin squeezing properties for three bosons in two modes

We discuss the canonical form for a pure state of three identical bosons in two modes, and classify its entanglement correlation into two types, the analogous GHZ and the W types as well known in a system of three distinguishable qubits. We have performed a detailed study of two important entanglement measures for such a system, the concurrence $\mathcal{C}$ and the triple entanglement measure $τ$. We have also calculated explicitly the spin squeezing parameter $ξ$ and the result shows that the W state is the most ``anti-squeezing'' state, for which the spin squeezing parameter cannot be regarded as an entanglement measure.

Encoding a logical qubit into physical qubits

We propose two protocols to encode a logical qubit into physical qubits relying on common types of qubit-qubit interactions in as simple forms as possible. We comment on its experimental implementation in several quantum computing architectures, e.g. with trapped atomic ion qubits, atomic qubits inside a high Q optical cavity, solid state Josephson junction qubits, and Bose-Einstein condensed atoms.
