Evidence of an odd-parity hidden order in a spin-orbit coupled correlated iridate

A rare combination of strong spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron correlations makes the iridate Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ a promising host for novel electronic phases of matter. The resemblance of its crystallographic, magnetic and electronic structures to La$_2$CuO$_4$, as well as the emergence upon doping of a pseudogap region and a low temperature $d$-wave gap, has particularly strengthened analogies to cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors. However, unlike the cuprate phase diagram that features a plethora of broken symmetry phases in a pseudogap region that include charge density wave, stripe, nematic and possibly intra-unit cell loop-current orders, no broken symmetry phases proximate to the parent antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phase in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ have been observed to date, making the comparison of iridate to cuprate phenomenology incomplete. Using optical second harmonic generation, we report evidence of a hidden non-dipolar magnetic order in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ that breaks both the spatial inversion and rotational symmetries of the underlying tetragonal lattice. Four distinct domain types corresponding to discrete 90$^{\circ}$ rotated orientations of a pseudovector order parameter are identified using nonlinear optical microscopy, which is expected from an electronic phase that possesses the symmetries of a magneto-electric loop-current order. The onset temperature of this phase is monotonically suppressed with bulk hole doping, albeit much more weakly than the Néel temperature, revealing an extended region of the phase diagram with purely hidden order. Driving this hidden phase to its quantum critical point may be a path to realizing superconductivity in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.

Downscaling the 2D Benard Convection Equations Using Continuous Data Assimilation

We consider a recently introduced continuous data assimilation (CDA) approach for downscaling a coarse resolution configuration of the 2D Benard convection equations into a finer grid. In this CDA, a nudging term, estimated as the misfit between some interpolants of the assimilated coarse grid measurements and the fine grid model solution, is added to the model equations to constrain the model. The main contribution of this study is a performance analysis of CDA for downscaling measurements of temperature and velocity. These measurements are assimilated either separately or simultaneously and the results are compared against those resulting from the standard point-to-point nudging approach (NA). Our numerical results suggest that the CDA solution outperforms that of NA, always converging to the true solution when the velocity is assimilated as has been theoretically proven. Assimilation of temperature measurements only may not always recover the true state as demonstrated in the case study. Various runs are conducted to evaluate the sensitivity of CDA to noise in the measurements, the size and the time frequency of the measured grid, suggesting a more robust behaviour of CDA compared to NA.

First-order superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transitions in spinor condensates

We observe evidence of first-order superfluid to Mott-insulator quantum phase transitions in a lattice-confined antiferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. The observed signatures include hysteresis effect and significant heatings across the phase transitions. The nature of the phase transitions is found to strongly depend on the ratio of the quadratic Zeeman energy to the spin-dependent interaction. Our observations are qualitatively understood by the mean field theory, and in addition suggest tuning the quadratic Zeeman energy is a new approach to realize superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transitions.

Mn3TeO6 - A New Multiferroic Material with Two Magnetic Substructures

From magnetic susceptibility, dielectric permittivity, electric polarization and specific heat measurements, we discover spin-induced ferroelectricity and magnetoelectric coupling in Mn3TeO6 and observe two successive magnetic transitions at low temperatures. A non-ferroelectric intermediate magnetic state occurs below 23 K and a multiferroic ground state emerges below 21 K. Moreover, Mn3TeO6 is a candidate for a multiferroic material where two types of incommensurate spin structures, cycloidal and helical, coexist. Theoretically, both spin substructures may contribute to the macro electric polarization via different mechanisms.

Antiferromagnetic spinor condensates in a two-dimensional optical lattice

We experimentally demonstrate that spin dynamics and the phase diagram of spinor condensates can be conveniently tuned by a two-dimensional optical lattice. Spin population oscillations and a lattice-tuned separatrix in phase space are observed in every lattice where a substantial superfluid fraction exists. In a sufficiently deep lattice, we observe a phase transition from a longitudinal polar phase to a broken-axisymmetry phase in steady states of lattice-confined spinor condensates. The steady states are found to depend sigmoidally on the lattice depth and exponentially on the magnetic field. We also introduce a phenomenological model that semi-quantitatively describes our data without adjustable parameters.

k=0 magnetic structure and absence of ferroelectricity in SmFeO3

SmFeO3 has attracted considerable attention very recently due to the reported multiferroic properties above room-temperature. We have performed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction as well as complementary polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on floating-zone grown SmFeO3 single crystals in order to determine its magnetic structure. We found a k=0 G-type collinear antiferromagnetic structure that is not compatible with inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction driven ferroelectricity. While the structural data reveals a clear sign for magneto-elastic coupling at the Néel-temperature of ~675 K, the dielectric measurements remain silent as far as ferroelectricity is concerned.

A structural distortion induced magneto-elastic locking in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ revealed through nonlinear optical harmonic generation

We report a global structural distortion in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ using spatially resolved optical second and third harmonic generation rotational anisotropy measurements. A symmetry lowering from an $I4_{1}/acd$ to $I4_{1}/a$ space group is observed both above and below the Néel temperature that arises from a staggered tetragonal distortion of the oxygen octahedra. By studying an effective super-exchange Hamiltonian that accounts for this lowered symmetry, we find that perfect locking between the octahedral rotation and magnetic moment canting angles can persist even in the presence of large non-cubic local distortions. Our results explain the origin of the forbidden Bragg peaks recently observed in neutron diffraction experiments and reconcile the observations of strong tetragonal distortion and perfect magneto-elastic locking in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.

Eruptions of Two Coupled Filaments Observed by SDO, GONG and STEREO

On 2012 July 11, two solar filaments were observed in the northeast of the solar disk and their eruptions due to the interaction between them are studied by using the data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) and Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). The eastern filament (F1) first erupted toward the northeast. During the eruption of F1, some plasma from F1 fell down and was injected to the North-East part of another filament (F2), and some plasma of F1 fell down to the northern region close to F2 and caused the plasma to brighten. Meanwhile, the North-East part of F2 first started to be active and rise, but did not erupt finally. Then the South-West part of F2 erupted successfully. Therefore, the F2's eruption is a partial filament eruption. Two associated CMEs related to the eruptions were observed by STEREO/COR1. We find two possible reasons that lead to the instability and the eruption of F2. One main reason is that the magnetic loops overlying the two filaments were partially opened by the eruptive F1 and resulted in the instability of F2. The other is that the downflows from F1 might break the stability of F2.

PandaX: A Liquid Xenon Dark Matter Experiment at CJPL

PandaX is a large upgradable liquid-xenon detector system that can be used for both direct dark-matter detection and $^{136}$Xe double-beta decay search. It is located in the Jinping Deep-Underground Laboratory in Sichuan, China. The detector operates in dual-phase mode, allowing detection of both prompt scintillation, and ionization charge through proportional scintillation. The central time projection chamber will be staged, with the first stage accommodating a target mass of about 120\,kg. In stage II, the target mass will be increased to about 0.5\,ton. In the final stage, the detector can be upgraded to a multi-ton target mass. In this paper a detailed description of the stage-I detector design and performance results established during the commissioning phase is presented.

Tracking Solar Active Region Outflow Plasma from its Source to the near-Earth Environment

Seeking to establish whether active region upflow material contributes to the slow solar wind, we examine in detail the plasma upflows from Active Region (AR)10978, which crossed the Sun's disc in the interval 8 to 16 December, 2007 during Carrington rotation (CR)2064. In previous work, using data from the Hinode/EUV Imaging Spectrometer, upflow velocity evolution was extensively studied as the region crossed the disc while a linear force-free magnetic extrapolation was used to confirm aspects of the velocity evolution and to establish the presence of quasi-separatrix layers at the upflow source areas. The plasma properties, temperature, density and first ionisation potential bias (FIP-bias) were measured with the spectrometer during the disc passage of the active region. Global potential field source surface (PFSS) models showed that AR 10978 was completely covered by the closed field of a helmet streamer that is part of the streamer belt. Thus it is not clear how any of the upflowing AR-associated plasma could reach the source surface at 2.5 R(Sun)and contribute to the slow solar wind. However a detailed examination of solar-wind in-situ data obtained by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft at the L1 point shows that the increase in O^7+/O^6+, C^6+/C^5+ and Fe/O - a FIP-bias proxy - are present before the heliospheric current sheet crossing. These increases, along with an accompanying reduction in proton velocity and an increase in density are characteristic of both AR and slow-wind plasma. Finally we describe a two-step reconnection process by which some of the upflowing plasma from the AR could reach the heliosphere.

Mapping the phase diagram of spinor condensates via adiabatic quantum phase transitions

We experimentally study two quantum phase transitions in a sodium spinor condensate immersed in a microwave dressing field. We also demonstrate that many previously unexplored regions in the phase diagram of spinor condensates can be investigated by adiabatically tuning the microwave field across one of the two quantum phase transitions. This method overcomes two major experimental challenges associated with some widely used methods, and is applicable to other atomic species. Agreements between our data and the mean-field theory for spinor Bose gases are also discussed.

Optimizing a spin-flip Zeeman slower

We present a design of a spin-flip Zeeman slower controlled by a fast feedback circuit for a sodium Bose-Einstein condensate apparatus. We also demonstrate how the efficiency of the slower strongly depends on its intrinsic parameters, and compare these observations with a few theoretical models. Our findings lead to a simple three-step procedure of designing an optimal Zeeman slower for neutral atoms, especially for those atomic species with high initial velocities, such as sodium and lithium atoms.

Observation of Energetic particles between a pair of Corotating Interaction Regions

We report observations of the acceleration and trapping of energetic ions and electrons between a pair of corotating interaction regions (CIRs). The event occurred in Carrington Rotation 2060. Observed at spacecraft STEREO-B, the two CIRs were separated by less than 5 days. In contrast to other CIR events, the fluxes of energetic ions and electrons in this event reached their maxima between the trailing-edge of the first CIR and the leading edge of the second CIR. The radial magnetic field (Br) reversed its sense and the anisotropy of the flux also changed from sunward to anti-sunward between the two CIRs. Furthermore, there was an extended period of counter-streaming suprathermal electrons between the two CIRs. Similar observations for this event were also obtained for ACE and STEREO-A. We conjecture that these observations were due to a "U-shape" large scale magnetic field topology connecting the reverse shock of the first CIR and the forward shock of the second CIR. Such a disconnected U-shaped magnetic field topology may have formed due to magnetic reconnection in the upper corona.

Dynamics in spinor condensates controlled by a microwave dressing field

We experimentally study spin dynamics in a sodium antiferromagnetic spinor condensate with off-resonant microwave pulses. In contrast to a magnetic field, a microwave dressing field enables us to explore rich spin dynamics under the influence of a negative net quadratic Zeeman shift $q_{\rm net}$. We find an experimental signature to determine the sign of $q_{\rm net}$, and observe harmonic spin population oscillations at every $q_{\rm net}$ except near each separatrix in phase space where spin oscillation period diverges. In the negative and positive $q_{\rm net}$ regions, we also observe a remarkably different relationship between each separatrix and the magnetization. Our data confirms an important prediction derived from the mean-field theory: spin-mixing dynamics in spin-1 condensates substantially depends on the sign of the ratio of $q_{\rm net}$ and the spin-dependent interaction energy. This work may thus be the first to use only one atomic species to reveal mean-field spin dynamics, especially the separatrix, which are predicted to appear differently in spin-1 antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spinor condensates.

Development of the Liquid Level Meters for the PandaX Dark Matter Detector

The two-phase xenon detector is at the frontier of dark matter direct search. This kind of detector uses liquid xenon as the sensitive target and is operated in two-phase (liquid/gas) mode, where the liquid level needs to be monitored and controlled in sub-millimeter precision. In this paper, we present a detailed design and study of two kinds of level meters for the PandaX dark matter detector. The long level meter is used to monitor the overall liquid level while short level meters are used to monitor the inclination of the detector. These level meters are cylindrical capacitors custom-made from two concentric metal tubes. Their capacitance values are read out by a universal transducer interface chip and recorded by the PandaX slow control system. We present the developments that lead to level meters with long-term stability and sub-millimeter precision. Fluctuations (standard deviations) of less than 0.02 mm for the short level meters and less than 0.2 mm for the long level meter were achieved during a few days of test operation.

Visualizing the Charge Density Wave Transition in 2H-NbSe2 in Real Space

We report the direct observation in real space of the charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in pristine 2H-NbSe2 using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We find that static CDW order is established in nanoscale regions in the vicinity of defects at temperatures that are several times the bulk transition temperature Tcdw. On lowering the temperature, the correlation length of these patches increases steadily until CDW order is established in all of space, demonstrating the crucial role played by defects in the physics of the transition region. The nanoscale CDW order has an energy and temperature-independent wavelength. Spectroscopic imaging measurements of the real-space phase of the CDW indicate that an energy gap in NbSe2 occurs at 0.7eV below the Fermi energy in the CDW phase, suggesting that strong electron-lattice interactions and not Fermi surface physics is the dominant cause for CDW formation in NbSe2.

A simple and efficient all-optical production of spinor condensates

We present a simple and optimal experimental scheme for an all-optical production of a sodium spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). With this scheme, we demonstrate that the number of atoms in a pure BEC can be greatly boosted by a factor of 5 in a simple setup that includes a single-beam optical trap or a crossed optical trap. This optimal scheme avoids technical challenges associated with some all-optical BEC methods, and can be applied to other optically trappable atomic species. In addition, we find a good agreement between our theoretical model and data. The upper limit for the efficiency of evaporative cooling in all-optical BEC approaches is also discussed.

CuBr2-A New Multiferroic Material with High Critical Temperature

A new multiferroic material, CuBr2, is reported for the first time. CuBr2 has not only a high transition temperature (close to liquid nitrogen temperature) but also low dielectric loss and strong magnetoelectric coupling. These findings reveal the importance of anion effects in the search for the high temperature multiferroics materials among these low-dimensional spin systems.
