Klein-tunneling-enhanced directional coupler for Dirac electron wave in graphene

Using the coupled-mode theory in guided-wave optics and electronics, we explore a directional coupling structure composed of two parallel waveguides electrostatically induced by the split-gate technique in bulk graphene. Our results show that Klein tunneling can greatly enhance the coupling strength of the structure. By adjusting a gate voltage, the probability density of Dirac electron wave function initially in one waveguide can be completely transferred into the other waveguide within several hundred nanometers. Our findings could not only lead to functional coherent coupling devices for quantum-based electronic signal processing and on-chip device integration in graphene, but also shrink the size of the devices to facilitate the fabrication of graphene-based large-scale integrated logic circuits.

Magnetodielectric study in SiO2-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticle compacts

The dielectric properties of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ magnetic nanoparticles with an insulating coating layer of SiO$_{2}$ were investigated. At high temperatures, the changes of the dielectric constant and loss induced by the magnetic field are opposite in sign and strongly frequency-dependent, which originates from extrinsic magnetodielectric coupling-the Maxwell-Wagner effect combined with magnetoresistance. And the interface defects leads to the obvious hysteresis phenomena observed in the measurements. On the other hand, the strong coupling of dielectric and magnetic properties at low temperatures contradicts the Maxwell-Wagner model, suggesting the intrinsic magnetodielectric coupling. Our observations are consistent with the recent polarization switching measurements, which confirm the low-temperature multiferroic state existing in highly-lossy Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$. And the core/shell nanostructure may provide a new route to achieve applicable magnetoelectric materials with low loss.

Magnetoelectric studies on polycrystalline FeVO4

We report the magnetic, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of polycrystalline iron vanadate(FeVO4), which has been recently found to exhibit multiferroicity in low temperature with noncollinear magnetic orderings. The influence of external magnetic field up to 9T on these properties is systematically investigated. Besides the suppressing effect on the original ferroelectric transition, the strong magnetic field seems to induce a secondary ferroelectric transition at a slight lower temperature. And the corresponding magnetization measurement reveals a field-induced metamagnetic transition at low temperatures. Our results will help to clarify the complex magnetic structure and microscopic mechanism of multiferroicity in FeVO4.

The Atomic-scale Growth of Large-Area Monolayer Graphene on Single-Crystal Copper Substrates

We study the growth and microscopic structure of large-area graphene monolayers, grown on copper single crystals by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in ultra-high vacuum (UHV). Using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we find that graphene grows primarily in registry with the underlying copper lattice for both Cu(111) and Cu(100). The graphene has a hexagonal superstructure on Cu(111) with a significant electronic component, whereas it has a linear superstructure on Cu(100). The film quality is limited by grain boundaries, and the best growth is obtained on the Cu(111) surface.

Chandra Observations of Comets 8P/Tuttle and 17P/Holmes during Solar Minimum

We present results for Chandra observations of comets, 17P/Holmes (17P) and 8P/Tuttle (8P). 17P was observed for 30 ksec right after its major outburst, on 31 Oct 2007 (10:07 UT) and comet 8P/Tuttle was observed in 2008 January for 47 ksec. During the two Chandra observations, 17P was producing at least 100 times more water than 8P but was 2.2 times further away from the Sun. Also, 17P is the first comet observed at high latitude (+19.1 degrees) during solar minimum, while 8P was observed at a lower solar latitude (3.4 degrees). The X-ray spectrum of 17P is unusually soft with little significant emission at energies above 500 eV. Depending on our choice of background, we derive a 300 to 1000 eV flux of 0.5 to 4.5 x 10^-13 ergs/cm2/sec, with over 90% of the emission in the 300 to 400 eV range. This corresponds to an X-ray luminosity between 0.4 to 3.3 x 10^15 ergs/sec. 17P's lack of X-rays in the 400 to 1000 eV range, in a simple picture, may be attributed to the polar solar wind, which is depleted in highly charged ions. 8P/Tuttle was much brighter, with an average count rate of 0.20 counts/s in the 300 to 1000 eV range. We derive an average X-ray flux in this range of 9.4 x 10^-13 ergs/cm2/sec and an X-ray luminosity for the comet of 1.7 x 10^14 ergs/sec. The light curve showed a dramatic decrease in flux of over 60% between observations on January 1st and 4th. When comparing outer regions of the coma to inner regions, its spectra showed a decrease in ratios of CVI/CV, OVIII/OVII, as predicted by recent solar wind charge exchange emission models. There are remarkable differences between the X-ray emission from these two comets, further demonstrating the qualities of cometary X-ray observations, and solar wind charge exchange emission in more general as a means of remote diagnostics of the interaction of astrophysical plasmas.

Upflows in the upper transition region of the quiet Sun

We investigate the physical meaning of the prominent blue shifts of Ne VIII, which is observed to be associated with quiet-Sun network junctions (boundary intersections), through data analyses combining force-free-field extrapolations with EUV spectroscopic observations. For a middle-latitude region, we reconstruct the magnetic funnel structure in a sub-region showing faint emission in EIT-Fe 195. This funnel appears to consist of several smaller funnels that originate from network lanes, expand with height and finally merge into a single wide open-field region. However, the large blue shifts of Ne VIII are generally not associated with open fields, but seem to be associated with the legs of closed magnetic loops. Moreover, in most cases significant upflows are found in both of the funnel-shaped loop legs. These quasi-steady upflows are regarded as signatures of mass supply to the coronal loops rather than the solar wind. Our observational result also reveals that in many cases the upflows in the upper transition region (TR) and the downflows in the middle TR are not fully cospatial. Based on these new observational results, we suggest different TR structures in coronal holes and in the quiet Sun.

Electromagnetically induced spatial light modulation

We theoretically report that, utilizing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), the transverse spatial properties of weak probe fields can be fast modulated by using optical patterns (e.g. images) with desired intensity distributions in the coupling fields. Consequently, EIT systems can function as high-speed optically addressed spatial light modulators. To exemplify our proposal, we indicate the generation and manipulation of Laguerre-Gaussian beams based on either phase or amplitude modulation in hot vapor EIT systems.

Coherent Graphene Devices: Movable Mirrors, Buffers and Memories

We theoretically report that, at a sharp electrostatic step potential in graphene, massless Dirac fermions can obtain Goos-Hänchen-like shifts under total internal reflection. Based on these results, we study the coherent propagation of the quasiparticles along a sharp graphene \emph{p-n-p} waveguide and derive novel dispersion relations for the guided modes. Consequently, coherent graphene devices (e.g. movable mirrors, buffers and memories) induced only by the electric field effect can be proposed.

Visual Observation and Quantitative Measurement of the Microwave Absorbing Effect at X band

We have setup a simple field mapping measure system to describe graphically the 2D quasi-free-space electromagnetic wave in a parallel plate waveguide at the X-band frequencies. Our apparatus illustrates a potential application in characterizing the microwave absorbing materials. The visual demonstration about the physical process and quantitative measurement of reflectivity coefficients can be achieved. This simple apparatus has have an advantage over with conventional testing methods which usually involve huge, expensive anechoic chambers and demand samples of large size.

Simulation of Current Experiments on the Tunneling Effect of Narrow $ε$-Near-Zero Channels

In this paper, we discussed the current experiments on the tunneling effect of electromagnetic energy through narrow channels of $ε$-near-zero(ENZ) medium in the microwave range. Using the finite element method, we carried out a full wave simulation of the two kinds of experimental configurations at present. It was shown that the ability of the electromagnetic waves penetrating into the ENZ medium is very necessary. The present experimental setups only using metamaterial-filled narrow channel in the configuration of parallel plate waveguides are unlikely to realize effective tunneling. Contrarily, the artificial plasma medium emulated using hollow metallic waveguide can achieve nearly perfect tunneling in a narrow channel without any transition section around its cutoff frequency, which exceed the scope of original ENZ tunneling theory and can be described by a simple equivalent circuit model.

Image Storage in Hot Vapors

We theoretically investigate image propagation and storage in hot atomic vapor. A $4f$ system is adopted for imaging and an atomic vapor cell is placed over the transform plane. The Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of an object in the object plane can thus be transformed into atomic Raman coherence according to the idea of ``light storage''. We investigate how the stored diffraction pattern evolves under diffusion. Our result indicates, under appropriate conditions, that an image can be reconstructed with high fidelity. The main reason for this procedure to work is the fact that diffusion of opposite-phase components of the diffraction pattern interfere destructively.

Transport properties and magnetic field induced localization in the misfit cobaltite [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal

Resistivity under magnetic field, thermopower and Hall coefficient are systematically studied for [Bi$_2$Ba$_{1.3}$K$_{0.6}$Co$_{0.1}$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.97}$ single crystal. In-plane resistivity ($ρ_{ab}$(T)) shows metallic behavior down to 2 K with a $T^2$ dependence below 30 K; while out-of-plane resistivity ($ρ_{c}(T)$) shows metallic behavior at high temperature and a thermal activation semiconducting behavior below about 12 K. Striking feature is that magnetic field induces a ln(1/$T$) diverging behavior in both $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ at low temperature. The positive magnetoresistance (MR) could be well fitted by the formula based on multi-band electronic structure. The ln(1/$T$) diverging behavior in $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_{c}(T)$ could arise from the magnetic-field-induced 2D weak localization or spin density wave.

Diffusion induced decoherence of stored optical vortices

We study the coherence properties of optical vortices stored in atomic ensembles. In the presence of thermal diffusion, the topological nature of stored optical vortices is found not to guarantee slow decoherence. Instead the stored vortex state has decoherence surprisingly larger than the stored Gaussian mode. Generally, the less phase gradient, the more robust for stored coherence against diffusion. Furthermore, calculation of coherence factor shows that the center of stored vortex becomes completely incoherent once diffusion begins and, when reading laser is applied, the optical intensity at the center of the vortex becomes nonzero. Its implication for quantum information is discussed. Comparison of classical diffusion and quantum diffusion is also presented.

Transport properties in Cu$_{x}$TiSe$_{2}$ (0.015$\leq$x$\leq$0.110) Single Crystal

Transport properties are systematically studied for the single crystals Cu$_{x}$TiSe$_{2}$ (0.015$\leq$x$\leq$0.110). Both of in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity show the coexistence of superconducting transition and charge density wave (CDW) for the single crystals with $x \leq 0.025$. After CDW state is completely suppressed around x=0.055, the superconductivity is apparently enhanced by Cu doping. No superconducting transition is observed above 1.8 K for Cu$_{0.11}$TiSe$_{2}$. Anisotropy in resistivity increases with increasing Cu content, and is nearly $T$-independent. CDW state has a strong effect on Hall coefficient and thermopower. A large thermopower, comparable to the triangle lattice $NaxCoO_2$, is observed in Cu$_{x}$TiSe$_{2}$. Intercalation of Cu induces a negative MR due to the interaction between conducting carries and localized magnetic moments.

Origin of superconductivity in nominally "undoped" T'-La$_{2-x}$Y$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ films

We have systematically studied the transport properties of the La$_{2-x}$Y$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$(LYCO) films of T'-phase ($0.05\leq x \leq 0.30$). In this nominally "undoped" system, superconductivity was acquired in certain Y doping range ($0.10\leq x \leq 0.20$). Measurements of resistivity, Hall coefficients in normal states and resistive critical field ($H^ρ_{c2}$)in superconducting states of the T'-LYCO films show the similar behavior as the known Ce-doped n-type cuprate superconductors, indicating the intrinsic electron-doping nature. The charge carriers are induced by oxygen deficiency. Non-superconducting Y-doped Pr- or Nd-based T'-phase cuprate films were also investigated for comparison, suggesting the crucial role of the radii of A-site cations in the origin of superconductivity in the nominally "undoped" cuptates. Based on a reasonable scenario in the microscopic reduction process, we put forward a self-consistent interpretation of these experimental observations.

Magnetic field induced spin-flop transition in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ (0.5$<$x$<$0.55)

The isothermal magnetoresistance (MR) with magnetic field (H) parallel to and perpendicular to ab plane is systematically studied on the single crystal Na$_{0.52}$CoO$_2$ with charge ordering at $\sim 50$ K and an in-plane ferromagnetism below 25 K. The isothermal MR behavior with H $\parallel$ ab plane and H $\perp$ ab plane is quite different. When H $\parallel$ ab plane, the MR is always negative and the in-plane ferromagnetic behavior is enhanced. While the MR with H $\perp$ ab plane changes from negative to positive with decreasing temperature or increasing H, and the in-plane ferromagnetic behavior is suppressed. A striking feature is that the MR with H $\perp$ ab plane shows a hysteresis behavior below 25 K, which is absent for the case of H $\parallel$ ab plane. These results provide strong evidence for a spin-flop transition of small moments of Co$^{3.5-δ}$ sites induced by H $\perp$ ab plane, leading to a metamagnetic transition for small moments of Co$^{3.5-δ}$ sites. These complex magnetism suggests an unconventional superconductivity in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ system because the Na$_x$CoO$_2$ around x=0.5 is considered to be the parent compound of superconductivity.

Ferroelectric switched all-metallic-oxide $p$-$n$ junctions

We report the first formation of the metallic $p$-$n$ junctions, the ferroelectric (Ba,Sr)TiO$_3$ (BST) switched optimally electron-doped ($n$-type) metallic T'-phase superconductor, (La,Ce)$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCCO), and hole-doped ($p$-type) metallic CMR manganite (La,Sr)MnO$_3$ (LSMO) junctions. In contrast with the previous semiconductor $p$-$n$ ($p$-$I$-$n$) junctions which are switched by the built-in field $V_0$, the present metallic oxides $p$-$I$-$n$ junctions are switched by double barrier fields, the built-in field $V_0$, and the ferroelectric reversed polarized field $V_{rp}$, both take together to lead the junctions to possess definite parameters, such as definite negligible reversed current ($10^{-9}$ A), large breakdown voltage ($>$7 V), and ultrahigh rectification ($>2\times10^4$) in the bias voltage 1.2 V to 2.0 V and temperature range from 5 to over 300 K. The related transport feature, barrier size effect, and temperature effect are also observed and defined.
