Multi-Antenna Aided Secrecy Beamforming Optimization for Wirelessly Powered HetNets

The new paradigm of wirelessly powered two-tier heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is considered in this paper. Specifically, the femtocell base station (FBS) is powered by a power beacon (PB) and transmits confidential information to a legitimate femtocell user (FU) in the presence of a potential eavesdropper (EVE) and a macro base station (MBS). In this scenario, we investigate the secrecy beamforming design under three different levels of FBS-EVE channel state information (CSI), namely, the perfect, imperfect and completely unknown FBS-EVE CSI. Firstly, given the perfect global CSI at the FBS, the PB energy covariance matrix, the FBS information covariance matrix and the time splitting factor are jointly optimized aiming for perfect secrecy rate maximization. Upon assuming the imperfect FBS-EVE CSI, the worst-case and outage-constrained SRM problems corresponding to deterministic and statistical CSI errors are investigated, respectively. Furthermore, considering the more realistic case of unknown FBS-EVE CSI, the artificial noise (AN) aided secrecy beamforming design is studied. Our analysis reveals that for all the above cases both the optimal PB energy and FBS information secrecy beamformings are of rank-1. Moreover, for all considered cases of FBS-EVE CSI, the closed-form PB energy beamforming solutions are available when the cross-tier interference constraint is inactive. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the secrecy performance advantages of all proposed secrecy beamforming designs compared to the adopted baseline algorithms.

Majorization-Minimization Aided Hybrid Transceivers for MIMO Interference Channels

The potential of deploying large-scale antenna arrays in future wireless systems has stimulated extensive research on hybrid transceiver designs aiming to approximate the optimal fully-digital schemes with much reduced hardware cost and signal processing complexity. Generally, this hybrid transceiver structure requires a joint design of analog and digital processing to enable both beamsteering and spatial multiplexing gains. In this paper, we develop various weighted mean-square-error minimization (WMMSE) based hybrid transceiver designs over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels at both millimeter wave (mmWave) and microwave frequencies. Firstly, a heuristic joint design of hybrid precoder and combiner using alternating optimization is proposed, in which the majorization-minimization (MM) method is utilized to design the analog precoder and combiner with unit-modulus constraints. It is validated that this scheme achieves the comparable performance to the WMMSE fully-digital solution. To further reduce the complexity, a phase projection-based two-stage scheme is proposed to decouple the designs of analog and digital precoder combiner. Secondly, inspired by the fully-digital solutions based on the block-diagonalization zero-forcing (BD-ZF) and signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) criteria, low-complexity MMbased BD-ZF and SLNR hybrid designs are proposed to well approximate the corresponding fully-digital solutions. Thirdly, the partially-connected hybrid structure for reducing system hardware cost and power consumption is considered, for which the MM-based alternating optimization still works. Numerical results demonstrate the similar or superior performance of all the above proposed schemes over the existing benchmarks.

When Machine Learning Meets Big Data: A Wireless Communication Perspective

We have witnessed an exponential growth in commercial data services, which has lead to the 'big data era'. Machine learning, as one of the most promising artificial intelligence tools of analyzing the deluge of data, has been invoked in many research areas both in academia and industry. The aim of this article is twin-fold. Firstly, we briefly review big data analysis and machine learning, along with their potential applications in next-generation wireless networks. The second goal is to invoke big data analysis to predict the requirements of mobile users and to exploit it for improving the performance of "social network-aware wireless". More particularly, a unified big data aided machine learning framework is proposed, which consists of feature extraction, data modeling and prediction/online refinement. The main benefits of the proposed framework are that by relying on big data which reflects both the spectral and other challenging requirements of the users, we can refine the motivation, problem formulations and methodology of powerful machine learning algorithms in the context of wireless networks. In order to characterize the efficiency of the proposed framework, a pair of intelligent practical applications are provided as case studies: 1) To predict the positioning of drone-mounted areal base stations (BSs) according to the specific tele-traffic requirements by gleaning valuable data from social networks. 2) To predict the content caching requirements of BSs according to the users' preferences by mining data from social networks. Finally, open research opportunities are identified for motivating future investigations.

Transmit Power Policy and Ergodic Multicast Rate Analysis of Cognitive Radio Networks in Generalized Fading

This paper determines the optimum secondary user power allocation and ergodic multicast rate of point-to-multipoint communication in a cognitive radio network in the presence of outage constraints for the primary users. Using tools from extreme value theory (EVT), it is first proved that the limiting distribution of the minimum of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) random variables (RVs) is a Weibull distribution, when the user signal and the interferer signals undergo independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) $κ-μ$ shadowed fading. Also, the rate of convergence of the actual minimum distribution to the Weibull distribution is derived. This limiting distribution is then used for determining the optimum transmit power of a secondary network in an underlay cognitive radio network subject to outage constraints at the primary network in a generalized fading scenario. Furthermore, the asymptotic ergodic multicast rate of secondary users is analyzed for varying channel fading parameters.

Efficient Resource Allocation for Relay-Assisted Computation Offloading in Mobile Edge Computing

In this article, we consider the problem of relay assisted computation offloading (RACO), in which user A aims to share the results of computational tasks with another user B through wireless exchange over a relay platform equipped with mobile edge computing capabilities, referred to as a mobile edge relay server (MERS). To support the computation offloading, we propose a hybrid relaying (HR) approach employing two orthogonal frequency bands, where the amplify-and-forward scheme is used in one band to exchange computational results, while the decode-and-forward scheme is used in the other band to transfer the unprocessed tasks. The motivation behind the proposed HR scheme for RACO is to adapt the allocation of computing and communication resources both to dynamic user requirements and to diverse computational tasks. Within this framework, we seek to minimize the weighted sum of the execution delay and the energy consumption in the RACO system by jointly optimizing the computation offloading ratio, the bandwidth allocation, the processor speeds, as well as the transmit power levels of both user $A$ and the MERS, under practical constraints on the available computing and communication resources. The resultant problem is formulated as a non-differentiable and nonconvex optimization program with highly coupled constraints. By adopting a series of transformations and introducing auxiliary variables, we first convert this problem into a more tractable yet equivalent form. We then develop an efficient iterative algorithm for its solution based on the concave-convex procedure. By exploiting the special structure of this problem, we also propose a simplified algorithm based on the inexact block coordinate descent method, with reduced computational complexity. Finally, we present numerical results that illustrate the advantages of the proposed algorithms over state-of-the-art benchmark schemes.

Polar Codes and Their Quantum-Domain Counterparts

Arikan's polar codes are capable of achieving the Shannon's capacity at a low encoding and decoding complexity, while inherently supporting rate adaptation. By virtue of these attractive features, polar codes have provided fierce competition to both the turbo as well as the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, making its way into the 5G New Radio (NR). Realizing the significance of polar codes, in this paper we provide a comprehensive survey of polar codes, highlighting the major milestones achieved in the last decade. Furthermore, we also provide tutorial insights into the polar encoder, decoders as well as the code construction methods. We also extend our discussions to quantum polar codes with an emphasis on the underlying quantum-to-classical isomorphism and the syndrome-based quantum polar codes.

Secrecy Outage and Diversity Analysis of Multiple Cooperative Source-Destination Pairs

We study the physical-layer security of a multiple source-destination (SD) pairs coexisting wireless network in the face of an eavesdropper, where an eavesdropper intends to wiretap the signal transmitted by the SD pairs. In order to protect the wireless transmission against eavesdropping, we propose a cooperation framework relying on two stages. Specifically, an SD pair is selected to access the total allocated spectrum using an appropriately designed scheme at the beginning of the first stage. The other source nodes (SNs) simultaneously transmit their data to the SN of the above-mentioned SD pair relying on an orthogonal way during the first stage. Then, the SN of the chosen SD pair transmits the data packets containing its own messages and the other SNs' messages to its dedicated destination node (DN) in the second stage, which in turn will forward all the other DNs' data to the application center via the core network. We conceive a specific SD pair selection scheme, termed as the transmit antenna selection aided source-destination pair selection (TAS-SDPS). We derive the secrecy outage probability (SOP) expressions for the TAS-SDPS, as well as for the conventional round-robin source-destination pair selection (RSDPS) and non-cooperative (Non-coop) schemes for comparison purposes. Furthermore, we carry out the secrecy diversity gain analysis in the high main-to-eavesdropper ratio (MER) region, showing that the TAS-SDPS scheme is capable of achieving the maximum attainable secrecy diversity order.

Next-generation Wireless Solutions for the Smart Factory, Smart Vehicles, the Smart Grid and Smart Cities

5G wireless systems will extend mobile communication services beyond mobile telephony, mobile broadband, and massive machine-type communication into new application domains, namely the so-called vertical domains including the smart factory, smart vehicles, smart grid, smart city, etc. Supporting these vertical domains comes with demanding requirements: high-availability, high-reliability, low-latency, and in some cases, high-accuracy positioning. In this survey, we first identify the potential key performance requirements of 5G communication in support of automation in the vertical domains and highlight the 5G enabling technologies conceived for meeting these requirements. We then discuss the key challenges faced both by industry and academia which have to be addressed in order to support automation in the vertical domains. We also provide a survey of the related research dedicated to automation in the vertical domains. Finally, our vision of 6G wireless systems is discussed briefly.

Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems Relying on Generalized Sub-Array-Connected Hybrid Precoding

In this paper, we consider a generalized sub-array-connected (GSAC) architecture for arbitrary radio frequency (RF) chain and antenna configurations, where the number of RF chains connected to a sub-array and the number of antennas in each sub-array can be arbitrary. Our design objective is to improve the energy-efficiency of the hybrid precoder of millimeter-wave massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. We firstly propose a successive interference cancellation based hybrid precoding algorithm to maximize the achievable rate for any given RF chain and antenna configuration. This algorithm firstly decomposes the total achievable rate optimization problem into multiple sub-rate optimization problems, then it successively maximizes these sub-rates. Since the number of RF chains is limited, we can afford using an exhaustive search scheme to evaluate all configurations and identify the one having the best energy efficiency. Moreover, to rely on an attractive limited feedback, we also propose a beamsteering codebook for our hybrid precoding aided GSAC architecture. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a similar rate as the corresponding optimal unconstrained precoder. Furthermore, we show that the energy-efficiency of the proposed scheme is better than that of the existing schemes in the fully-connected and sub-array-connected architectures.

When Entanglement meets Classical Communications: Quantum Teleportation for the Quantum Internet (Invited Paper)

Quantum Teleportation is the key communication functionality of the Quantum Internet, allowing the "transmission' of qubits without either the physical transfer of the particle storing the qubit or the violation of the quantum mechanical principles. Quantum teleportation is facilitated by the action of quantum entanglement, a somewhat counter-intuitive physical phenomenon with no direct counterpart in the classical word. As a consequence, the very concept of the classical communication system model has to be redesigned to account for the peculiarities of quantum teleportation. This re-design is a crucial prerequisite for constructing any effective quantum communication protocol. The aim of this manuscript is to shed light on this key concept, with the objective of allowing the reader: i) to appreciate the fundamental differences between the transmission of classical information versus the teleportation of quantum information; ii) to understand the communications functionalities underlying quantum teleportation, and to grasp the challenges in the design and practical employment of these functionalities; iii) to acknowledge that quantum information is subject to the deleterious effects of a noise process termed as quantum decoherence. This impairment has no direct counterpart in the classical world; iv) to recognize how to contribute to the design and employment of the Quantum Internet.

Uplink Sum-Rate and Power Scaling Laws for Multi-User Massive MIMO-FBMC Systems

This paper analyses the performance of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) signaling in conjunction with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) in multi-user (MU) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Initially, closed form expressions are derived for tight lower bounds corresponding to the achievable uplink sum-rates for FBMC-based single-cell MU massive MIMO systems relying on maximum ratio combining (MRC), zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver processing with/without perfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS). This is achieved by exploiting the statistical properties of the intrinsic interference that is characteristic of FBMC systems. Analytical results are also developed for power scaling in the uplink of MU massive MIMO-FBMC systems. The above analysis of the achievable sum-rates and corresponding power scaling laws is subsequently extended to multi-cell scenarios considering both perfect as well as imperfect CSI, and the effect of pilot contamination. The delay-spread-induced performance erosion imposed on the linear processing aided BS receiver is numerically quantified by simulations. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the close match between our analysis and simulations, and to illustrate and compare the performance of FBMC and traditional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based MU massive MIMO systems.

Trajectory Design and Power Control for Multi-UAV Assisted Wireless Networks: A Machine Learning Approach

A novel framework is proposed for the trajectory design of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based on the prediction of users' mobility information. The problem of joint trajectory design and power control is formulated for maximizing the instantaneous sum transmit rate while satisfying the rate requirement of users. In an effort to solve this pertinent problem, a three-step approach is proposed which is based on machine learning techniques to obtain both the position information of users and the trajectory design of UAVs. Firstly, a multi-agent Q-learning based placement algorithm is proposed for determining the optimal positions of the UAVs based on the initial location of the users. Secondly, in an effort to determine the mobility information of users based on a real dataset, their position data is collected from Twitter to describe the anonymous user-trajectories in the physical world. In the meantime, an echo state network (ESN) based prediction algorithm is proposed for predicting the future positions of users based on the real dataset. Thirdly, a multi-agent Q-learning based algorithm is conceived for predicting the position of UAVs in each time slot based on the movement of users. In this algorithm, multiple UAVs act as agents to find optimal actions by interacting with their environment and learn from their mistakes. Additionally, we also prove that the proposed multi-agent Q-learning based trajectory design and power control algorithm can converge under mild conditions. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate that as the size of the reservoir increases, the proposed ESN approach improves the prediction accuracy. Finally, we demonstrate that throughput gains of about 17% are achieved.

Joint Radar and Communication Design: Applications, State-of-the-art, and the Road Ahead

In this paper, we firstly overview the application scenarios and the research progress in the area of communication and radar spectrum sharing (CRSS). We then propose a novel transceiver architecture and frame structure for a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) base station (BS) operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, using the hybrid analog-digital (HAD) beamforming technique. We assume that the BS is serving a multi-antenna aided user equipment (UE) operating in a mmWave channel, which in the meantime actively detects multiple targets. Note that part of the targets also play the role of scatterers for the communication signal. Given this framework, we propose a novel scheme for joint target search and communication channel estimation relying on the omni-directional pilot signals generated by the HAD structure. Given a fully-digital communication precoder and a desired radar transmit beampattern, we propose to design the analog and digital precoders under non-convex constant-modulus (CM) and power constraints, such that the BS can formulate narrow beams towards all the targets, while pre-equalizing the impact of the communication channel. Furthermore, we design an HAD receiver that can simultaneously process signals from the UE and echo waves from the targets. By tracking the angular variation of the targets, we show that it is possible to recover the target echoes and mitigate the potential interference imposed on the UE signals by invoking the successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique, even when the radar and communication signals share the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed approaches in realizing DFRC are verified via numerical simulations. Finally, our discussions are summarized by overviewing the open problems in the research field of CRSS.

Transmit Antenna Selection and Beamformer Design for Secure Spatial Modulation with rough CSI of Eve

The security of spatial modulation (SM) aided networks can always be improved by reducing the desired link's power at the cost of degrading its bit error ratio performance and assuming the power consumed to artificial noise (AN) projection (ANP). We formulate the joint optimization problem of maximizing the secrecy rate (Max-SR) over the transmit antenna selection and ANP in the context of secure SM-aided networks, which is mathematically a non-linear mixed integer programming problem. In order to solve this problem, we provide a pair of solutions, namely joint and separate solutions. Specifically, an accurate approximation of the SR is used for reducing the computational complexity, and the optimal AN covariance matrix (ANCM) is found by convex optimization for any given active antenna group (AAG). Then, given a large set of AAGs, simulated annealing mechanism is invoked for optimizing the choice of AAG, where the corresponding ANCM is recomputed by this optimization method as well when the AAG changes. To further reduce the complexity of the above-mentioned joint optimization, a low-complexity two-stage separate optimization method is also proposed. Furthermore, when the number of transmit antennas tends to infinity, the Max-SR problem becomes equivalent to that of maximizing the ratio of the desired user's signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio to the eavesdropper's. Thus our original problem reduces to a fractional programming problem, hence a significant computational complexity reduction can be achieved for the optimization problem. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform the existing leakage-based null-space projection scheme in terms of the SR performance attained, and drastically reduces the complexity at a slight SR performance reduction.

Aeronautical Ad Hoc Networking for the Internet-Above-The-Clouds

The engineering vision of relying on the ``smart sky" for supporting air traffic and the ``Internet above the clouds" for in-flight entertainment has become imperative for the future aircraft industry. Aeronautical ad hoc Networking (AANET) constitutes a compelling concept for providing broadband communications above clouds by extending the coverage of Air-to-Ground (A2G) networks to oceanic and remote airspace via autonomous and self-configured wireless networking amongst commercial passenger airplanes. The AANET concept may be viewed as a new member of the family of Mobile ad hoc Networks (MANETs) in action above the clouds. However, AANETs have more dynamic topologies, larger and more variable geographical network size, stricter security requirements and more hostile transmission conditions. These specific characteristics lead to more grave challenges in aircraft mobility modeling, aeronautical channel modeling and interference mitigation as well as in network scheduling and routing. This paper provides an overview of AANET solutions by characterizing the associated scenarios, requirements and challenges. Explicitly, the research addressing the key techniques of AANETs, such as their mobility models, network scheduling and routing, security and interference are reviewed. Furthermore, we also identify the remaining challenges associated with developing AANETs and present their prospective solutions as well as open issues. The design framework of AANETs and the key technical issues are investigated along with some recent research results. Furthermore, a range of performance metrics optimized in designing AANETs and a number of representative multi-objective optimization algorithms are outlined.

Near-Hashing-Bound Multiple-Rate Quantum Turbo Short-Block Codes

Quantum stabilizer codes (QSCs) suffer from a low quantum coding rate, since they have to recover the quantum bits (qubits) in the face of both bit-flip and phase-flip errors. In this treatise, we conceive a low-complexity concatenated quantum turbo code (QTC) design exhibiting a high quantum coding rate. The high quantum coding rate is achieved by combining the quantum-domain version of short-block codes (SBCs) also known as single parity check (SPC) codes as the outer codes and quantum unity-rate codes (QURCs) as the inner codes. Despite its design simplicity, the proposed QTC yields a near-hashing-bound error correction performance. For instance, compared to the best half-rate QTC known in the literature, namely the QIrCC-QURC scheme, which operates at the distance of $D = 0.037$ from the quantum hashing bound, our novel QSBC-QURC scheme can operate at the distance of $D = 0.029$. It is worth also mentioning that this is the first instantiation of QTCs capable of adjusting the quantum encoders according to the quantum coding rate required for mitigating the Pauli errors given the different depolarizing probabilities of the quantum channel.

Robust beamforming and jamming for enhancing the physical layer security of full duplex radios

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of a full-duplex base station (BS) aided system in the worst case, where an uplink transmitter (UT) and a downlink receiver (DR) are both equipped with a single antenna, while a powerful eavesdropper is equipped with multiple antennas. For securing the confidentiality of signals transmitted from the BS and UT, an artificial noise (AN) aided secrecy beamforming scheme is proposed, which is robust to the realistic imperfect state information of both the eavesdropping channel and the residual self-interference channel. Our objective function is that of maximizing the worst-case sum secrecy rate achieved by the BS and UT, through jointly optimizing the beamforming vector of the confidential signals and the transmit covariance matrix of the AN. However, the resultant optimization problem is non-convex and non-linear. In order to efficiently obtain the solution, we transform the non-convex problem into a sequence of convex problems by adopting the block coordinate descent algorithm. We invoke a linear matrix inequality for finding its Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution. In order to evaluate the achievable performance, the worst-case secrecy rate is derived analytically. Furthermore, we construct another secrecy transmission scheme using the projection matrix theory for performance comparison. Our simulation results show that the proposed robust secrecy transmission scheme achieves substantial secrecy performance gains, which verifies the efficiency of the proposed method.

Joint Active User Detection and Channel Estimation in Massive Access Systems Exploiting Reed-Muller Sequences

The requirements to support massive connectivity and low latency in massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) bring a huge challenge in the design of its random access (RA) procedure, which usually calls for efficient joint active user detection and channel estimation. In this paper, we exploit the vast sequence space and the beneficial nested structure of the length-$2^m$ second-order Reed-Muller (RM) sequences for designing an efficient RA scheme, which is capable of reliably detecting multiple active users from the set of unknown potential users with a size as large as $2^{m(m-1)/2}$, whilst simultaneously estimating their channel state information as well. Explicitly, at the transmitter each user is mapped to a specially designed RM sequence, which facilitates reliable joint sequence detection and channel estimation based on a single transmission event. To elaborate, as a first step, at the receiver we exploit the elegant nested structure of the RM sequences using a layer-by-layer RM detection algorithm for the single-user (single-sequence) scenario. Then an iterative RM detection and channel estimation algorithm is conceived for the multi-user (multi-sequence) scenario. As a benefit of the information exchange between the RM sequence detector and channel estimator, a compelling performance vs. complexity trade-off is struck, as evidenced both by our analytical and numerical results.
