Numerical approximation of variational problems with orthotropic growth

We consider the numerical approximation of variational problems with orthotropic growth, that is those where the integrand depends strongly on the coordinate directions with possibly different growth in each direction. Under realistic regularity assumptions we derive optimal error estimates. These estimates depend on the existence of an orthotropically stable interpolation operator. Over certain meshes we construct an orthotropically stable interpolant that is also a projection. Numerical experiments illustrate and explore the limits of our theory.

Sobolev embeddings in Musielak-Orlicz space

An embedding theorem for Sobolev spaces built upon general Musielak-Orlicz norms is offered. These norms are defined in terms of generalized Young functions which also depend on the $x$ variable. Under minimal conditions on the latter dependence, a Sobolev conjugate is associated with any function of this type. Such a conjugate is sharp, in the sense that, for each fixed $x$, it agrees with the sharp Sobolev conjugate in classical Orlicz spaces. Both Sobolev inequalities in the whole $\mathbb{R}^n$ and Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities in domains are established. Compact Sobolev embeddings are also presented. In particular, optimal embeddings for standard Orlicz-Sobolev spaces, variable exponent Sobolev spaces, and double-phase Sobolev spaces are recovered and complemented in borderline cases. A key tool, of independent interest, in our approach is a new weak type inequality for Riesz potentials in Musielak-Orlicz spaces involving a sharp fractional-order Sobolev conjugate.

Global regularity for nonlinear systems with symmetric gradients

We study global regularity of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations depending on the symmetric part of the gradient with Dirichlet boundary conditions. These systems arise from variational problems in plasticity with power growth. We cover the full range of exponents $p \in (1,\infty)$. As a novelty the degenerate case for $p>2$ is included. We present a unified approach for all exponents by showing the regularity for general systems of Orlicz growth.

Grading of Triangulations Generated by Bisection

For triangulations generated by the adaptive bisection algorithm by Maubach and Traxler we prove existence of a regularized mesh function with grading two. This sharpens previous results in two dimensions for the newest vertex bisection and generalizes them to arbitrary dimensions. In combination with Diening et al. (2021) this yields $H^1$-stability of the $L^2$-projection onto Lagrange finite element spaces for all polynomial degrees and dimensions smaller than seven.

Pointwise gradient estimate of the ritz projection

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a convex polytope ($n \leq 3$). The Ritz projection is the best approximation, in the $W^{1,2}_0$-norm, to a given function in a finite element space. When such finite element spaces are constructed on the basis of quasiuniform triangulations, we show a pointwise estimate on the Ritz projection. Namely, that the gradient at any point in $Ω$ is controlled by the Hardy--Littlewood maximal function of the gradient of the original function at the same point. From this estimate, the stability of the Ritz projection on a wide range of spaces that are of interest in the analysis of PDEs immediately follows. Among those are weighted spaces, Orlicz spaces and Lorentz spaces.

Calderón-Zygmund estimates for the fractional $p$-Laplacian

We prove fine higher regularity results of Calderón-Zygmund-type for equations involving nonlocal operators modelled on the fractional $p$-Laplacian with possibly discontinuous coefficients of VMO-type. We accomplish this by establishing precise pointwise bounds in terms of certain fractional sharp maximal functions. This approach is new already in the linear setting and enables us to deduce sharp regularity results also in borderline cases.

Interpolation Operator on negative Sobolev Spaces

We introduce a Scott--Zhang type projection operator mapping to Lagrange elements for arbitrary polynomial order. In addition to the usual properties, this operator is compatible with duals of first order Sobolev spaces. More specifically, it is stable in the corresponding negative norms and allows for optimal rates of convergence. We discuss alternative operators with similar properties. As applications of the operator we prove interpolation error estimates for parabolic problems and smoothen rough right-hand sides in a least squares finite element method.

Relaxed Kacanov scheme for the p-Laplacian with large p

We introduce a globally convergent relaxed Kacanov scheme for the computation of the discrete minimizer to the $p$-Laplace problem with $2 \leq p < \infty$. The iterative scheme is easy to implement since each iterate results only from the solve of a weighted, linear Poisson problem. It neither requires an additional line search nor involves unknown constants for the step length. The rate of convergence is independent of the underlying mesh.

A Relaxed Kačanov Iteration for the $p$-Poisson Problem

In this paper we introduce and analyze an iteratively re-weighted algorithm, that allows to approximate the weak solution of the $p$-Poisson problem for $1 < p \leq 2$ by iteratively solving a sequence of linear elliptic problems. The algorithm can be interpreted as a relaxed Ka{\v c}anov iteration, as so-called in the specific literature of the numerical solution of quasi-linear equations. The main contribution of the paper is proving that the algorithm converges at least with an algebraic rate.

An averaged space-time discretization of the stochastic $p$-Laplace system

We study the stochastic $p$-Laplace system in a bounded domain. We propose two new space-time discretizations based on the approximation of time-averaged values. We establish linear convergence in space and $1/2$ convergence in time. Additionally, we provide a sampling algorithm to construct the necessary random input in an efficient way. The theoretical error analysis is complemented by numerical experiments.

Parabolic weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type inequalities

We derive weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type inequalities in function spaces concerned with parabolic partial differential equations. We consider general weights depending on both space and time variables belonging to a Muckenhoupt class, so-called the parabolic $A_p$-class, where only the parabolic cubes are involved in the definition.

Global Maximal Regularity for Equations with Degenerate Weights

In this paper we are concerned with global maximal regularity estimates for elliptic equations with degenerate weights. We consider both the linear case and the non-linear case. We show that higher integrability of the gradients can be obtained by imposing a local small oscillation condition on the weight and a local small Lipschitz condition on the boundary of the domain. Our results are new in the linear and non-linear case. We show by example that the relation between the exponent of higher integrability and the smallness parameters is sharp even in the linear or the unweighted case.

A Space-Time DPG Method for the Heat Equation

This paper introduces an ultra-weak space-time DPG method for the heat equation. We prove well-posedness of the variational formulation with broken test functions and verify quasi-optimality of a practical DPG scheme. Numerical experiments visualize beneficial properties of an adaptive and parabolically scaled mesh-refinement driven by the built-in error control of the DPG method.

On the Sobolev and $L^p$-Stability of the $L^2$-projection

We show stability of the $L^2$-projection onto Lagrange finite element spaces with respect to (weighted) $L^p$ and $W^{1,p}$-norms for any polynomial degree and for any space dimension under suitable conditions on the mesh grading. This includes $W^{1,2}$-stability in two space dimensions for any polynomial degree and meshes generated by newest vertex bisection. Under realistic but conjectured assumptions on the mesh grading in three dimensions we show $W^{1,2}$-stability for all polynomial degrees. We also propose a modified bisection strategy that leads to better $W^{1,p}$-stability. Moreover, we investigate the stability of the $L^2$-projection onto Crouzeix-Raviart elements.

Sharp trace and Korn inequalities for differential operators

We establish sharp trace- and Korn-type inequalities that involve vectorial differential operators, the focus being on situations where global singular integral estimates are not available. Starting from a novel approach to sharp Besov boundary traces by Riesz potentials and oscillations that equally applies to $p=1$, a case difficult to be handled by harmonic analysis techniques, we then classify boundary trace- and Korn-type inequalities. For $p=1$ and so despite the failure of the Calderón-Zygmund theory, we prove that sharp trace estimates can be systematically reduced to full $k$-th order gradient estimates. Moreover, for $1<p<\infty$, where sharp trace- yield Korn-type inequalities on smooth domains, we show for the basically optimal class of John domains that Korn-type inequalities persist -- even though the reduction to global Calderón-Zygmund estimates by extension operators might not be possible.

Fortin Operator for the Taylor-Hood Element

We design a Fortin operator for the lowest-order Taylor-Hood element in any dimension, which was previously constructed only in 2D. In the construction we use tangential edge bubble functions for the divergence correcting operator. This naturally leads to an alternative inf-sup stable reduced finite element pair. Furthermore, we provide a counterexample to the inf-sup stability and hence to existence of a Fortin operator for the $P_2$-$P_0$ and the augmented Taylor-Hood element in 3D.

Uniform Hölder-norm bounds for finite element approximations of second-order elliptic equations

We develop a discrete counterpart of the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory, which provides uniform Hölder-norm bounds on continuous piecewise affine finite element approximations of second-order linear elliptic problems of the form $-\nabla \cdot(A\nabla u)=f-\nabla\cdot F$ with $A\in L^\infty(Ω;\mathbb{R}^{n\times n})$ a uniformly elliptic matrix-valued function, $f\in L^{q}(Ω)$, $F\in L^p(Ω;\mathbb{R}^n)$, with $p > n$ and $q > n/2$, on $A$-nonobtuse shape-regular triangulations, which are not required to be quasi-uniform, of a bounded polyhedral Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$.

A pointwise differential inequality and second-order regularity for nonlinear elliptic systems

A sharp pointwise differential inequality for vectorial second-order partial differential operators, with Uhlenbeck structure, is offered. As a consequence, optimal second-order regularity properties of solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems in domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are derived. Both local and global estimates are established. Minimal assumptions on the boundary of the domain are required for the latter. In the special case of the $p$-Laplace system, our conclusions broaden the range of the admissible values of the exponent $p$ previously known.
